Alex Ascher is back! There's a new threat roaming the streets of Los Angeles. Before now, ghouls have stayed out of America, but now one is hunting Alex. Having a homicidal, unkillable djinn after you is bad enough, but nothing in Alex's life is ever so simple.
Satanists, a possessed computer programmer, and haunted junk in the garage is just the beginning. Alex is not alone though. When dealing with the supernatural, you take whatever allies you can find, no matter how unlikely.
This is the second book in the Halfblood Legacy series.
Shadow of the Ghoul By Devin Hanson I liked this even more than book one. Now more people and creatures know about Alex. Lots of action dealing with ghouls, more secrets revealed, and more threats from her demon mother. New creatures, too. Fun read.
Second books of a series have ALWAYS been inferior to the first book, in my experience. I have always finished the second book of any popular series in different genres thinking “well that was only ok”.
This book has my award for “Best 2nd Installment Ever”!
It was fantastic. Alex Ascher continues to learn and grow into her capabilities and learn about the world around her and how it relates to her investigative career. The character growth and her interaction with other steady characters add a new dimension to the series.
The book is gripping, like the first one, and when I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it!
I was so sad when the book ended. This book definitely leaves you looking forward to the next installment! Super excited to see what kind of situation she ends up in next time.
This is very enjoyable! There is a ton a action and a lot of interesting characters. I loved the suspense and the trip We went on. There were a few characters added that I liked in the story. I don’t want to give anything away but when some leave at the end...I am saddened. I wish a couple could stay around to be familiar for the next story.
Overall I loved this story! It entertained me more than the last book. This is a paranormal world and we get to visit with all of the characters you could think off that reside there. The characters are just fun and full of life! They all have their quirks that make them one of a kind. This is very enjoyable and worth a re-listen.
I did listen to this on audio. Jessica M Hepburn did a wonderful job portraying all the different characters in this story.
A little heavy on the theology for my taste, but the action and pacing were pretty good in this book. I liked seeing exactly how Alex developed her relationships with the men (both old and new) in her life.
The F/F relationship from the previous book was thankfully over and only had cursory mentions in this one - Alex did mention that she wasn't usually lesbian but had made an single exception. I actually forgot what her age was supposed to be because it's been a few months since I read the first book, and I think that was better for me story-wise.
I wasn't a huge fan of Alex's repeated TSTL decisions about running into confrontations without appropriate amounts of backup, but at least the resolutions were somewhat realistic this time and didn't rely on deux ex machina plot devices from special abilities like the last book.
An enjoyable read, and I plan on continuing with the next book.
So much good stuff! I just love Devin's take on the supernatural. There's great action, steamy scenes, interesting new friends and allies, and interesting baddies. It's a worthy continuation of book one. I really read them all back-to-back so it's hard to separate them in my mind. I won't keep you reading too long here - just want to say - you need to read these books! I'd recommend starting with number 1 though, there's so much to be enjoyed there before you start this next adventure.
I discovered this series 2 days ago...and I’m thrilled! Finding a great author on KU is like finding buried treasure. This series is like that!😉 I really enjoyed the MC, and I think it’s because she’s being written by a man. There are a few steamy moments, but the scenes aren’t overbearing, or gratuitous....they are part of the story. I will eagerly read whatever I can find by this author!
I read the first book and went straight out to buy this one. It did not disappoint. I am enjoying this series, though there are some typos here and there. If that drives you crazy, you might give it a pass. I just rolled over them myself because I was interested in how the story would turn out.
Great characters, takes place in LA, interesting world building. Give it a go.
The first book in the series is: The Half Blood's Hoard.
Love this book! It's better than the first. Loved the character development and how the world continues to build. Alex is getting her feet under her and working out how to navigate and find her place. Very fun. I recommend this series for anyone who love a strong female lead in an urban fantasy setting.
Lovvvved Alex Ascher and her supernatural cast of friends - they work the dark underbelly of LA and keep the dark side of the supernatural world away from humanity.
Can’t wait for the next book of the amazing Alex and friends and their adventures - this author and series do not disappoint! An exciting novel and an absolutely worthwhile read
This was a great story and the second book in the his series!
This was a great story and the second book in the his series! I can't wait for the next one. I read the first two back to back and really hope a third is quick in getting released. Love this series!
I was pleasantly surprised by this book! I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good mix of paranormal and science fiction/fantasy. The lead character is a breath of fresh air and the plot kept me interested.
Absolute entertainment! The supernatural world revamped and rewritten! I loved every minute of it, didn’t want to stop reading it and even dreamt about Alex's fantastic adventures! Well written, well executed and expertly put together.
Plenty of action from start to finish. Alex has to find a Ghoul and comes across other supernatural creatures. She also finds out that her cat Grim is not a cat. I really enjoyed reading this book.
I enjoyed the first book and after devouring the second in now invested in following Alexandra. Action, fantasy and a side of carnal restorative pleasure, this series has me hungry for more
I'm so happy that this series will continue. Alex is an incredible character that I'm sure Hanson readers enjoy, and I can't wait to purchase mor Halfblood Legacy books!
I didn't enjoy this as much as the first book I found it a bit of a trudge to get through, unfortunately. That said, I liked the status quo at the end so I may pick up book 3 at some point
