I love writing and I'm a writer of love in all its forms - fiction, poetry, blogging. Think of me as a busker in a subway. I love music, I love to perform and you guys are kind enough to give me money to allow me to do it. My bank manager likes that too, but he doesn't use my subway.
I'm passionate about sharing my work with readers. I understand though, as I'm not a famous New York Times Bestseller (yet!), you might be nervous about taking a chance on me. That's why I made the offer at the top of this section. If you enjoy the ride, I hope you'll just keep rolling on and try some more.
As you'll see from my book list here on Goodreads, I write in a range of genres: romance-suspense novels, gritty short stories and more recently, a series of illustrated, interactive modern fairy tales for children (age 6-12). Wherever possible my books are available in digital, paperback and audio book formats.
I often have giveaways of paperbacks, audio books, e-books and sometimes rather valuable electronic gadgets related to reading (e.g. Kindles and other e-readers). Keep an eye out on my blog and you might get more free stuff!
I still had spots when I started writing and have won numerous local, national and international prizes for poetry and short stories in the many years that have passed.
I now live a double life, sharing my time between a tiny rural town in southwest France and within commuting distance of London in the UK.
3 stars, I think. I am kind of divided right down the middle with this book. There were things that drove me absolutely nuts: 1. The sex scenes for me were rather cringe-worthy--awkward dialogue, weird wording--"clitoral cum waves" (I almost gagged), yeah...I just didn't consider it hot. 2. The wording in general, the whole accents, the slang...there were times I was picturing Eliza Doolittle and times when I was just kinda like "huh?" 3. The insta-love and over-the-top sappiness...probably fine for most people, I'm not really a sweet words and pet names kind of girl, so I wasn't loving that.
Having said that, there were things I really appreciated. 1. I liked the characters, Spencer was a little dry for me, but I liked Shannon, she had good instincts, she was comfortable with herself and knew who she was and didn't cower under any circumstances. She was bright and funny and had a good heart. Well done. Ben, I wish he had been a bigger part of the story, but his insights were very important. The other characters were developed enough that they weren't just props and page fillers, they had an actual connection with the other characters and a purpose withing the story. 2. Crime-solving, I liked this part, I wish it had been more of the book and the romance had been secondary. There were a few surprises in there for me, and I always appreciate it when I don't have everything figured out in the first few pages. Overall, I liked it.
Shannon's law by Emma Calin is a February 2014 is a Gallo-Ramano publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Shannon has been tranfered to Fleetwood Green and assigned a beat cop position. Right away she notices some unusual activity involving drugs. When she catches the Earl of Bloxington's son with marijuana, she confronts the Earl and informs him of the situation. The last thing she expected was for there to be an attraction between herself and Spencer. She also meets Jasmine, a woman with her sights set on Spencer. Jasmine and Shannon immediately butt heads. As the investigation into the criminal drug trade begins to heat up so does the relationship between Spencer and Shannon. Jasmine is also burning... with jealousy. Spencer doesn't really seem to understand the seriousness of the situation with Jasmine until he finds himself in a dangerous situation with Shannon and Jasmine shows him her true intentions. I have not read anything by this author before, but I intend to keep my eyes open for her books from now on. This is the second book in the" Passion Patrol" series, but this book can be read as a stand alone. Shannon is a sassy, independent, woman that has never rubbed elbows with the likes of royalty. Being in the midst of the upper crust society has Shannon feeling excited, but very nervous and a little out of place. Spencer is worth it though as Shannon falls hard for this handsome widower and father. The feeling is mutual, but the relationship with Jasmine relates back to the Earl's first wife and he resitates when he is put into a tight spot and finds himself having to decide which woman to believe- Shannon or Jasmine. Naturally, you can understand how Shannon might feel about that. There are some really tough scenes and some graphic forensic decriptions in the story but mostly the the focus is on the relationship between Spencer and Shannon. Spencer's son could have been set up and the more Shannon digs the more is appears he was innocent. There are some twist in the story which gives up a glimpse into the darker side of human nature. I loved Shannon's character. She is forthcoming and doesn't believe in pulling any punches. She has a big heart, but doesn't take any crap. She has a very sharp tongue and a wicked sense of humor and not everyone appreciates it. I thought she was great. Spencer of course is conflicted and being raised as a part of royalty he is much more reserved and at times you will find you want to hug him and at times you want punch him. He does show some backbone though when he has to and of course redeems himself in end. This story is unlike most romantic supsense/ mystery novels and is very modern and very British. I really enjoyed it. Overall I will give this one a B+
Oh what fun Shannon is. Strong, smart, snarky, willful, disrespectful, sexy, loyal - a delightful jumble of characteristics that make following her adventures a blast. Set near London, with an interlude in Venice, there were a few references and slang terms I didn't fully appreciate, but they didn't detract from the story. I might have gone 5-stars, but the ending got a bit sappy.
I also appreciated that Shannon didn't have "super cop" abilities. She was good at what she did, and left the rest to the specialists. The secondary characters were well defined, and played key roles in advancing the plot.
The sex could have been a bit hotter, and more frequent, but the story was great.
Shannon is a Police Woman who has been transferred to the small village of Fleetworth-Green to become a routine village cop. She comes upon a group of teenagers who are engaging in drugs & drinking. All the boys flee except one. She walks back to his "house" with him. During the walk she discovers he has recently been charged with a crime, but Shannon has a feeling that things are not adding up. The "house" is Bloxington Manor. Home to the boy Ben & his father Spencer, the widowed Earl of Bloxington. There are immediate sparks between Shannon & Spencer. There is also a rival in the form of one upper class female, Jasmine de Montfort. Shannon soon suspects there may be people & drug trafficking in the small quite village. She plays it close to chest to avoid being seen as the usual wild child cop she usually is. Things soon heat up & not only between the sheets. What is going on is just the tip of a very big iceberg. Will Shannon get the man & will she be commended for breaking open a very big & important case againt millionaire criminals. This book truly had a little of everything. There was steamy sex scenes (not too bawdy), action & some hilarity, murder, soaked cats & a horse trampling the vegetable garden. I very much enjoyed this book & feel fortunate to have received a free copy of it. This was my first time reading a book by Emma Calin & I will definitely be looking forwrd to reading more in the future. I loved all the British sayings & descriptions of the places. Love reading books about other locales & Britain seems to be quite a great backdrop to a fabulous book!!
I was absolutely thrilled to be sent an advanced copy of Shannon’s Law to review for Emma. I love crime books, especially those where the protagonist is female. Emma is also a new author for me so I was excited and intrigued to see what her work is like – I definitely wasn’t disappointed and look forward to reading more of her books in the future! Shannon is a cop who has be relocated to a small village called Fleetworth-Green. When she comes across a group of teens doing drugs and drinking in the middle of a field she gets a hunch that one of the boys doesn’t belong with the group and when she finds out he has a criminal record, something just doesn’t add up. She later finds out that the boy is son of Spencer, the hunky 11th Earl of Bloxington. Spencer and Shannon hit it off right away but Shannon can’t shake the feeling that she doesn’t belong in his world. In the midst of an ongoing investigation and a snobby stuck-up lawyer who has her eye on Spencer, will they find love?
When starting this book I was really quite surprised at Emma’s writing style and how sophisticatedly written this book was. Emma’s descriptions and similes were other-worldly – she could have written an entire page about snow without saying the word ‘snow’ once yet I still have a clear picture in my head of what was going on and how Shannon was feeling and that’s a very talented thing to be able to do. This book has some graphic adult scenes in, but they’re written very tastefully. It’s no 50 shades and they’re between a couple who care very deeply for one another so are in no way offensive or portraying women (or men for that matter) in a bad light. I also liked that they weren’t rushed because if there’s one thing I hate most about reading a sex scene – especially when the book is considered ‘erotica’ - is when the whole thing is over within half a page with no indication of how the characters are feeling. It’s like an author got too embarrassed about what they were writing and just stopped! This definitely wasn’t the case with Emma and she cleverly describes not only their actions in a lot of detail but they’re feelings as well which I think indicates maturity. The way they speak to each other during these heated scenes is quite unrealistic and I’m not sure people actually talk like that but I’ve never slept with an Earl so it’s hard to judge… I like that this book doesn’t only focus on the steamier, sexy scenes – it has a considerable amount of crime and police action in it to, which I loved. Both aspects of the books were very well balanced which is what made it work so well for me.
It’s really refreshing reading a book where the female is the more dominant figure and Shannon was the definition of a dominant, strong, female figure. I absolutely loved her with her quick and witty sense of humour and her quirky and fierce personality. She was confident and to the point so all-in-all the perfect protagonist. Quite frankly, I’ve had enough of these storybook women gushing over a man and turning into jelly in their company. Shannon used Spencer to her absolute advantage and got him exactly where she wanted from the very beginning. I don’t know whether that was the cop in her or her natural self-confidence but whatever it was, it worked. Despite being a cop, she doesn’t play by the rules and the prime example of this I found is when Shannon is writing a birthday card out for Spencer after only meeting him once and the narrative says, ‘Could she, should she add a kiss? She knew she shouldn’t. So, she did and sealed it’. Spencer was a great character too – extremely well-developed and very interesting to read about. How often do you read about a sexy, millionaire Earl? It was definitely a change of pace! All of the characters were very read-able and well-rounded. Even the ones you love to hate. Move over Mr Grey – there’s a new Earl in town. Shannon’s Law is dramatic, mesmerising and extremely sexy with an ultimate fairy-tale ending that will renew your belief in true love. An absolute must-read.
This is my first Cop book and I have to say “WOW!” I absolutely loved it! The author has a way with her smooth writing to draw in the reader with some addictive characters and some detective like suspense solving dangerous crimes and drama’s of high society snobs/perbs vs middle-low class meter okra mentality.
First let me say that the characters and their chemistry drew me in immediately. I loved Shannon (village constable) and her intuitive ambition. The woman is sexy, fearless, caring, and blunt as hell. Her joking attitude towards life kept me laughing throughout the whole story. Shannon is the type of woman who has worked for everything she has; she is not rich or poor but has grown up on the poor side making her have a greater appreciation of life, respect, and a passionate soul towards other human beings.
Spencer is one big Hugga Bear, yeah he is a high society rich aristocratic Earl (Sir Bloxington) but he is down to earth and has personality of Old School formality and politeness. He is sexy, built, and passionate – a real knight in shining armor. His tale of losing a wife and raising a son (Ben) is heart breaking and in a way makes him blind to the things that are going on around him – well until he meets Shannon – LOL
The story’s plot is filled with exciting suspenseful drama solving several crimes that seem to flow like a triple effect from one person’s actions. Dealing with young punks, drug and human trafficking, murder, black mailing, jealousy, conniving evilness, Frauds & stolen identities, and lots of trust issues amongst themselves, the story just totally captivates you. Get ready for a Braingasm as the author put it.
The romance is beautiful. The passion between Shannon and Spencer sizzle’s off the page like hot lava flowing down a river (4 flames). Spencer loves Shannon more than there is love in a love bank and Shannon follows her own rule of Law – “I’ll always give of myself what you give me of yourself.”
The secondary characters were just as humorous as Shannon and Spencer. I loved her BFF Mel and his adopted motto “If you’re happy today you’re going to be chasing that ever-after feeling.” I was so tickled to see him find some happiness too. Of course there is always a favorite character to hate and that would be Jasmine - Talking about an Evil spiteful Fucking Witch/Bitch, the drama alone from her wanted me to jump in the book and kick her ass.
The ending was blissful as the climaxing of solving all the crimes, working through the trust issue, earning respect from a community, and realizing love conquers all regardless of your rich or poor status comes to an understanding justice leaving you content and with a smile on your face. I leave you with this from the character Mel remember this – “Love doesn’t knock. It mugs you when you go out or slides under the door if you stay in.”
Excellent Read! I look forward to reading more of this author’s work.
Having previously enjoyed the first book in the Passion Patrol series (review on my blog) I was keen to get reading. Although this is part of a series I would just like to say that it also works very well as a standalone read.
The storyline jumped straight into the action and I found myself quickly hooked on Shannon's straight-talking attitude. She yearned for something exciting to happen in the quiet village of Fleetwood-Green so she could put her police skills to good use. She came across a group of teenagers in the woods and this led her to Earl Spencer who had an instant affect on Shannon.
Shannon was a brilliant character, she was very strong and feisty, some of her comments literally had me laughing out loud! I was curious as to why she was transferred to the village from Brixton but it soon became clear. Spencer was a mixed character - he had a nervous, sweet side but I also got the feeling of strength and power from him. The supporting characters were as interesting as the main characters, I particularly liked Mel who made up a great comedy duo with Shannon.
The criminal side of things was really interesting for me, a gruesome discovery got me thinking up all sorts of things - I felt like a detective as I tried to solve the case alongside Shannon. There were some very tense moments as she performed her duty as a police officer, a heart-pounding rescue mission was one of my favourite parts of the book.
Once again there were times when I found the authors writing style to be almost poetic, especially the romantic/steamy/sexual scenes. Shannon's sexual encounters were described in detail so please bear this in mind when you choose to read this book - it may not suit everyone's tastes.
This was another enjoyable read from Emma Calin, romantic and sexy with a twist of police action!
In the premise at least this reminded me of The prince and the showgirl, except it’s the earl and the policewoman. And what a policewoman—every bit as feisty as Marilyn Monroe’s showgirl.
PCW Shannon Aguerri is shunted out of her London jurisdiction and into a country PC Plod situation after acting independently on a case. Immediately she arrives she meets the local lord and, boy, is he a hunk. However, he has a history. His wife died some years before in a skiing accident and his 15 year old son has a police record for possession. Sparks fly between the earl and Shannon almost from day one. But she’s a working class girl with a mechanic father and cleaner mother. How on earth is she going to get on in the earl’s world?
There’s some very steamy sex scenes and that’s usually a turn-off for me. Those I’ve read before usually have a weak storyline that seems to be an excuse for all the sex and it pulls me out of what little story there is. I’m happy to report that isn’t the case with this book. The story is so strong that I could read the sex and then get back to what was happening. Which is a lot. Murder, money laundering, slavery, trafficking, drugs, kidnapping—you name it, Shannon has to deal with it. She also has to contend with Elvis and the Royal Family.
The dialogue during the sex scenes was a bit over the top for me, but other than that, thes tory, the descriptions, the characters—I liked them all.
I had trouble reading this book. I couldn't relate to the characters as much as I would have liked. The main problem is that I'm not a UK citizen and as much BBC America I watch, there is no amount of television that can help with the cultural barrier. Figuring out the lingo wasn't that hard. I've actually learned some new slang that I actually really like! It was the chapter set during a cricket game that was an issue. I didn't find the relationship between the hero and heroine that believable. The differences in social class isn't what bothered me, and neither did the age gap. It was just the way the two interacted. It seemed way to fast for them to really gather any thoughts. Most of their thoughts seemed to be about sex, and even though that is good in a romance, I was hoping for a bit more substance.
That said, the second half of the book did show that substance. There is an instance where the trust is questioned and the character's pull through. I still would have liked more, but I am glad that the fairy tale like beginning had real issues later on.
The sex scenes are steamy and for a person who thrives in reading steamy scenes, there are plenty to read through. I could do with a little less sex, but that is my own personal aesthetic.
In all, it's not a bad read, but I didn't really care for it as much as someone else would.
In the form of Shannon Aguerri, Emma Calin has created a truly memorable character. She’s fun, sassy and a total maverick in the police force. Somehow though things always seem to turn out right for this girl from the Peckham Estate.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the way that all the loose threads that Shannon had been investigating came together in the end. The reader can relate to her because she is full of self- doubt inside even though she hides it well! Her instant relationship with the Earl stretches the reader’s credulity a little and personally I would have preferred a bit more build up. The hot, steamy sex descriptions are well done for those who like that but I must admit after the first two or three I did find myself skim reading as I wanted to get on with the main story.
All in all a fast-paced steamy cop story with great characters that will leave you wanting more.
This is truly a great read. I like Emma Calin writing style a lot. The story was great with a lot of different elements: romance, drama, intrigue, and actions. There were never a dull moment in the story. The only thing that I would like to point out is that this book is written by an English author, so the language used is very much traditional England's English. It could take you aback to make a full understanding on some of the dialogs. I had to look up some of the words and even look more into some of the customs written. Other dialogs and descriptions, I consider them very poetic and lyrical, in my opinion. Now that I have the knowledge, I am looking forward to reading her other works. I will not give out any spoiler, you will have to read the book. She truly is worth reading, and she is a great writer. I am looking forward to another installment of the Passion Patrol series.
WPC Shannon Aguerri is a mixed race city girl whose gung ho attitude and smart mouth has resulted in a posting to a little country village . She is also a very good copper. Her new posting will bring her a lot more excitement than she could possibly expect. Widower Spencer Chamberlain - Knightsmith, the Earl of Bloxington owns most of the land surrounding the village . His teenage son is a good lad who might be making the wrong friends. We have a lot of normal minor crimes that you will find in any country village, but there are also some very bad people about. This is a funny and sexy romance and an exciting and dangerous police procedure story. Our heroine is a very brave and brash young woman with a strong sense of justice and a great sense of humour. Our hero is older, upper class and sexy. He is also not afraid to get down and dirty when it's needed. A fun Cinderella type story. I loved it.
Beautifully written with a cast of wonderfully drawn characters. You will be cheering on PC Shannon from the very beginning and will get caught up in her life as the new village bobby. I loved Shannon's relationship with Spencer and also her immediate connection to his son, Ben.
Hot scenes and intrigue from this book in the Passion Patrol series.
I won't be long in my review... as I don't need too... :)
"A fast paced and intense story where two different social worlds collide in a vortex full of love, hatred, intrigues and passion. Emma Calin has done it again. A book hard to put down before its end."
This book was a mixed bag, and yet at the end I was charmed. Some of the description was so cringe-worthy, I was flinching and felt embarrassed by just having read it. But other parts were really sweet. Some of the internal musings from the heroine were quite poignant, and some of it didn’t make sense. I married a Brit and lived in the UK for 3 years and go back all the time, and even then some of the dialogue was hard to follow... possibly because British humour and sarcasm is very specific. However, the plot was good... and the romance was good and the characters were good. Like I said above, I left the book feeling charmed. It was also a very well written ending where everything was tied up and there were no questions left unanswered. So, despite some speed bumps, I am interested in reading the rest of the series. P.S. There was definitely a J.D. Robb’s In Death feel about the book... the British contemporary version.
I was given a copy of this book from the author via voracious readers for an honest review.
I enjoyed the book. The writing had a wonderful blend of cheek, and sassy dialogue; sappy romantic love phrases and very descriptive love scenes. With any romance, there has to be an actual, semi intelligent story for it be enjoyable. The author delivers on this account. The heroine also does not give up here career when she marries the hero and he isn’t an entitled rich aristocratic ass. I thoroughly enjoyed the verbal cat fight between the villain and the heroine. Epic insults. One the end, love conquers all....at least in this book.
Shannyn had just moved to the village when she spotted a boy running with the wrong crowd and decided to scare them away but something about one boy named Ben caught her attention and when they started to talk she knew he was arrested wrongfully. Over the weeks she had really started to have feelings for ben's dad the earl and together they helped each other with truth honesty and love.
This is a smart, sexy and sassy read!! This kept me glued to my kindle it is so good!! I was gifted a copy of this story and Passion Patrol 2 as an ARC from Emma Calin and immediately read the second book and so cannot wait for book 3!!!
What a great story it has everything mystery, romance, drama, humor, spice and more. I was hooked from the start. It is well written and kept my interest until the very end. I was give this book as a gift and voluntarily give this review.
First of all let me say that I would give this book a five star review if the sex scenes weren't so explicit. My personal belief is that a good romance novel is made great by living the bedroom scene to the imagination. I personally think when you add the steamy stuff that it degrades the writing style.
With that said, the writing of the book was very good. The premise of the constable that gets sent to a small village because of overaggressive police work is really nice. Especially since the constable is a woman. The fact that she is a competent police officer and thinks aggressively (doesn't abuse people, but thinks aggressively) adds to the story. She is going to be underutilized in this small village.
But on her first day she comes across several teenagers who are smoking dope, drinking alcohol and well, just as teenagers do, they are breaking the law while having "fun." One of the young men has a small motorbike and Shannon wants to make sure that it is not stolen. So, she makes the young man push the bike home where she meets his father. Well, the meeting is what makes the Romance part of the novel. His dad, Spencer, is an Earl, but more than that a car enthusiast, and not to forget, drop dead handsome.
Now as a car enthusiast you would think a rich man would just buy and drive. But Spencer likes to buy, restore, and then drive. Shannon's dad happens to also be a mechanic and she grew up helping restore cars. So, one connection.
Several other connections happen and it appears that love at first sight will win.
But the village that the Earl, Spencer, is governing has some problems. There are drug runners, sex slave traders, and well, petty crimes, such as a horse that keeps breaking out of it's pasture and eating the neighbor's garden.
I won't give the rest of the story. BUT, the romance is that of poor girl meets rich, entitled man, who shouldn't pay her any attention (did I say Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice). It is a bit simpler than Austen's work, but very much along that great line of writing.
The police side of the story is wonderful, as good as any crime writing that I have had the pleasure of reading and reviewing.
If you are like me just skip about 60 pages of steamy sex scenes and the book is a hit. If you like steamy sex scenes then guess what, you are going to love the book also.
Shannon Aguerri is sent to the small village outside of London. On her first day she catches the Earl’s son and some of his friends drinking and riding a scooter she suspects doesn’t belong to them. Shannon takes the Earl’s son back to the manor and meets the very handsome and eligible Earl. Shannon immediately finds herself attracted to the overalls wearing Earl named Spencer. But, Spencer’s complex relationship with his deceased wife’s friend. While Shannon continues to police the small village she begins to discover that the village is hiding an underworld kind of crime that you’d find in the city. Along with her investigation into the crime she and Spencer’s relationship develops quickly and before they both know the new police woman has fallen for the widowed Earl. But, when things move quickly obstacles and trust aren’t always solved at the same time as love develops. When Shannon’s job and her relationship intersect in an unfriendly way they must learn to work together or to let each other go.
I really enjoyed this novel. Shannon is feisty and has an answer for everything. Spencer is her perfect foil in being a posh stuffy English Earl. The love story between these two is very much a modern day fairy tale. The crime element in this story is well done also. The two components of this story are very well woven together and very believable. In fact any woman would be jealous of Shannon finding her happiness with Spencer. I do think though that an American reading this story will have a bit of a challenge with Shannon’s English slang. You get used to it but at first I thought her slang and retorts for everything were going to be too much for this story. But, like all good characters she changes with the story and definitely becomes one of the best parts of this story. Her comedic element is great when some of the criminal element gets heavy. Overall, I think this is a really worthwhile read and will suck you in once you get used to the slang and the culture. Emma Calin really did a great job with Shannon’s Law. I look forward to reading something else from Emma.
I'm the author of this book - so here's the blurb as I can't really write a review for it....
A sexy aristocrat. A wild child inner city cop. A crime wave of passion.
The second book in the "Passion Patrol" series featuring hot cops, hot crime and hot romance. Following the success of "Knockout!", "Shannon's Law", features another sassy, passionate female cop - Shannon Aguerri.
Could she really mix with the British royal family? Can she risk her heart and career on yet another maverick mission? Can she get justice for an innocent boy? Dare a kid from the gutter dream of being a countess?
Shannon's Law – The action romance novel of 2014.
Wild child inner city cop Shannon Aguerri walks a dangerous line between her methods and justice. When the bosses lose their nerve, after yet another maverick mission, she is transferred to green pastures to play out the role of a routine village cop. In Fleetworth-Green she encounters signs of people and drug trafficking and homes in on serious millionaire criminals.
As a loner she has attracted men but nothing has stuck. When she meets Spencer, the hunky and widowed Earl of Bloxington, there is an immediate rapport between them. Their social differences mean nothing to their passion and need. Already in the mix is an upper class female rival – who has long plotted her way into the Earl's bed. The jealousy is an evil shade of green and the anger is a violent scarlet.
Often inhibited by a sense of duty and honour, Spencer is slow to reveal his feelings. When Shannon confronts him with the need to choose between her word and that of her rival, he does not immediately support her.
All the same, when they are forced together to carry out a desperate rescue mission, their love is stronger than everything ranged against them.
NB. Story has Adult content: strong language in high stress police situations and explicit bedroom scenes.
Shannon's Law by Emma Calin is an exciting crime thriller which is fast-paced, intense and mesmerizing. It is a passionate and compelling story where hot cops, hot crime and hot romance freely blended in a vortex of action and passion taking along the reader on a rollercoaster ride.
Gutsy and full-blooded city cop Shannon Aguerri has been repositioned from Brixton to a small village called Fleetworth-Green after a string of individualistic and eccentric assignments which threaten to go out of hand. Her hope of leading a quiet and peaceful life was quashed when she comes across a group of teenage delinquents. While the rest of the teens fled, one remains. Shannon decides to walk him home and learns that his name is Ben and that he has been recently charged with a crime. Ben is the son of Spencer, the widowed 11th Earl of Bloxington.
When Shannon meets Spencer, they hit it off immediately. As is her nature, Shannon does not go by the book. She manipulated him to her advantage. But it is not smooth going as she has a rival in Jasmine de Montfort, who also belongs to the upper class. Soon she realizes that the sleepy village may secretly be hiding a lot of things. There are several interesting threads to the story, and all merge beautifully to make one entertaining story.
Emma Calin is different from many established authors whose books I have reviewed. I was intrigued by the title and was keen to find out how the story pans out. I must confess that I was absolutely delighted with her overall treatment of the story though the book is certainly not without its flaws. I’m glad I decided to take a chance and have a look at Shannon’s Law. There are some graphic adult scenes which may deter some readers. It has been made to appear a necessary part of the story. All in all, Shannon’s Law is a refreshing read from a new author for me. A real page-turner, the story will come to an end sooner than you realizes.
Part of a series of stories featuring a rebellious and unconventional British bi-racial woman police officer. This episode nicely melds some seemingly unrelated circumstances, as the protagonist, Village Constable Shannon Aguerri, finds new and interesting ways to break the rules as she pursues the murderer of an undocumented sex worker.
The book is an interesting smorgasbord of British culture and geography- the descriptions of the landscape and estates are evocative, and provide an unusual contrast with the sordid crime Aguerri is investigating. Combining a very British view of police work, and upper class playtime (a cricket game impossibly won by the decidedly working class underdogs), the story meanders through British socio-economic culture, from the aristocracy to immigrants, from socialist filmmakers to mercenary divorcees.
The tale does have some twists and turns, and will satisfy mystery fan and anglophile alike. The author, who clearly prefers to linger on the sensual and erotic, deftly directs the focus of the reader - scenes of violence and pain seem more loosely sketched, and drift by almost unnoticed. There is grit enough, but it lacks the intention to irritate.
The book is enjoyable, and satisfying. With a large cast of characters to manage, it is inevitable that some are more memorable than others. That isn’t always a good thing. The 11th Earl of Bloxington, one of the protagonists, seems more like an idealized fantasy than a real character- impossibly tall and broad-shouldered, bright, humanitarian, able to transcend racial and class barriers, well-endowed (indeed), and able to play sax and sing like Elvis. Still, he is nobly wrought, and provides a distinctive love interest for the heroine of the book. There are enough idiosyncratic and well-crafted minor characters to take some of the saccharine out of the Earl.
Nicely done, a good second installment. Waiting for the next one.
I honestly wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading this book. I love 'cop' romances, (especially when the woman is the cop!) and I enjoy billionaire romances, so I thought I'd give it a go! And I'll tell you this: I had SO MUCH FUN reading this book!
I was hooked from the first few pages. If I were ever to be a cop (highly unlikely :D ) I would want to be like Shannon. She knows when to let things slide, and when to throw the book at someone. She's a smart ass, which makes her my kind of girl. And she has fantastic intuition, and a heart of gold. (Well, except for when it comes to those moments where she needs to work a little revege.)
When Shannon first meets Spencer... *sigh* I TOTALLY understand why she wanted him from that very first moment. He's sexy, a good father, has a sense of humor, not afraid to get his hands dirty despite his title...I want him, and he's only a fictional character! I love his shyness around Shannon, and his protectiveness. He's just an all-around wonderful man.
The secondary characters are fantastic as well! They all have great personalities...well, except for a certain bleepity-bleeping woman, whom I'd like to watch jump off the face of the planet! That certain upper-class woman is, well, let's just say she's a common criminal in my book. I HATE her! (In the best way!) Some of my favorite moments in the book were filled with secondary characters. Vandervell and Selena definitely added a few laughs to the story, and young Ben adds a little bit of everything, from tears to laughs, frustration to empathy. And let's not forget the connections to aristocracy and royalty!
This book is full of suspense, sweet romantic scenes, steamy sexy scenes, hilarious moments...this story will take your emotions all over the place. :) I enjoyed this story from beginning to end!
this was a fun steamy book to read. it had mystery, love, jealousy, blackmail. All the elements to make a great book and series.
Shannon is a vivacious and quite honest women with no filter. She ends up in a English town as there constable and immediately falls for Spencer. Spencer is a Earl and way above her status. Or so she thinks. that is until she spends time with him and realizes he is just a guy asking a girl to like him. They have instant attraction and he is so sweet and kind. He is proper to but when they get together boy do the windows steam up. One problem: Jasmine. She brings out the green eyed monster in Shannon but also Spencer trusts her not because of anything but they have known each other for ever. Jasmine wants Spencer’s title and will stop at nothing to marry him. Heck she blackmails the son Ben. Shannon steps in and that is a story of whoa and opens Spencer’s eyes.
In the meantime, a drug issue is going on and a murder. Shannon is trying not to go on intuition alone but it does help her in this case.
A story of adventure and love. showing where love is unwavering and supporting. Where kindness and trust are what one needs to feel safe. A fun adventurous and at times steamy read.
Shannon Aguerri is a tough inner city copy who has been transferred to a local village and is now the village bobby. Shannon is unlike anything the villagers have ever seen and unsure of what to think of her at first, she soon becomes a part of village life. Yes, some of her methods are unconventional and she might be a bit gobby, but Shannon soon falls into her role...............and into the arms of an Earl! A very sexy Earl! And she falls hard. Throw into the mix a dead girl, drugs and possibly human trafficking AND a rival for the Earl's affections, and Shannon soon begins to wonder if she is out of her depth.
Shannon's law is fast paced from start to finish. Shannon is a strong willed female character and takes no nonsense from anyone. She is tough but fair and I liked that side of her. We get to see her vulnerable side where the Earl is concerned and she is unsure of her place in his world. At the heart of the book is a love story between two very different people who society would not expect to be together. There are some very very racy sex scenes in the book which are quite explicit and had me heading for a cold shower! An enjoyable read.
