Sandra Kelly has a take-no-prisoners policy when reporting the local news—and for getting what she deserves. For instance, first place in the Townsperson of Year contest, and a promotion at the station. Except, one man stands in her way.
Cooper Hall needs to win the upcoming Townsperson contest for reasons of his own—and a certain sexy journalist won’t stop him. No prank is too complicated, no scheme too elaborate, and her red lace panties will not distract him. Much.
They signed a peace treaty years ago and swore they’d never speak of the pranks again. But when they both set their eyes on the same prize, their prank war rekindles. This time, they aren’t stopping at tighty-whities on flag poles and stuffed tarantulas, either. Love has no place in war, and these two enemies play to win.
Leigh W. Stuart was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, daughter to an English teacher. Most nights of her youth were spent hiding under the covers with a flashlight and a book, and she still gets nostalgic whenever she gets a whiff of paper-book scent. Although she decided to be a writer by the age of six years old, she later talked herself out of it and went on to study French and German in college. She met her husband in Switzerland, where she studied abroad one year, and they now live there with their two children. Recently, she has returned to the university for a degree in English Literature.
She loves getting messages from her readers - don't hesitate to drop her a note!
As far as I can realise, this is the first book by Leigh W. Stuart that I’ve ever read. This is the second book in the Sycamore Cove Games series and while I can say that this book does stand alone, like another reviewer, I’m beginning to wonder if my lukewarm feelings for this book were because I hadn't read the first book in the series (which I think is The 12 Dares of Christmas).
And lukewarm really is probably the best way to describe my feelings about this book. I thought the writing was very good and innately readable - I just couldn’t seem to connect to the characters or feel their emotions. Surprisingly, having read many other reviews, this is the complete opposite to the way other people felt.
I didn’t really ever take to Sandra. She just seemed slightly stuck-up and a bit prickly and she could never really pull it back for me. Also, I was waiting for her to start to be called Sandy - I much prefer a shortened name, after all. And then my hopes were dashed when Sandra had a nice dig at the new secretary (and her ex’s new girlfriend) as having the bimbo name of Sandy. Ach well, you win some…
Cooper was a bit lacklustre and felt a bit immature. He certainly wasn’t a hero I particularly wanted for my own, which is always disappointing in a romance. And I didn’t feel the connection between the pair which is another massive red flag!
With regards to the ‘comedy’ aspect of this romantic comedy - that didn’t work for me either. I’ll be honest and admit that there is no grey area with me with regards to pranks - they are either a definite hit or a complete miss. These pranks were a miss for me, again veering into the territory of juvenile and embarrassing. If someone did any of these things to me I’d be furious - especially if you messed with me while I was doing my job.
I definitely wouldn't rule out buying and reading another book by Leigh W. Stuart. I enjoyed the writing style, if not the story. And that cover is just gorgeous - that would definitely catch my eye. This wasn’t a story for me, but others have loved it, so if you fancy it - give it a try as it’s a fairly quick read at 283 pages. Just 3 stars from me.
I got this for free from LibraryThing's Early Reviewers and it just wasn't a book I could get into. I don't think it had anything to do with reading book 2 without reading book 1, but perhaps that was a factor. I just didn't find the characters that interesting and it all seemed a bit childish.
It is a VERY fast read, though, so if that's what you want, maybe you should check it out.
Sometimes hilarious, sometimes a little strange, this book is certainly a humorous romp from start to finish that has awkward moments but also heart-warming, sweet moments.
I loved these characters! They were (as others mentioned) believable and complex, and their chemistry was undeniable! I read the book in a single long day of airport delays, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride.
My only complaints are that there were places that needed some TLC with the editing -- simple things, but they really should've been caught -- and the one question I just couldn't let go of throughout the book: Why did this simmering pot of frustrated desire erupt suddenly for these two? The best townsperson contest was a clever way to put them at odds, but these two were at odds over whether the sky was blue (it seemed), so I could never quite sleuth out what their day-to-day dynamic was before the book began. This made it tough to buy into the sudden tension between them.
Otherwise -- I enjoyed this book tremendously, and I'll look for more from this author!
I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I had the honor of receiving an arc of this book for an honest review.
I really adore Cooper and Sandra. This series really stepped up for its second outing with the second chance romance of these two characters. What I really loved with the backstory between them, which is just silly enough to work perfectly in the context of the series. The pranks themselves were fantastic. They weren't gross or hurtful, but took hilariously petty to a whole new level. The Swedes remain my favorite prank of the book. The chemistry between these two is on point and their resistance to falling into one another's arms is believable. It's wonderful to watch Cooper and Sandra each explore their hesitations and motivations as two adult characters coming into their own. A definite recommend for a lovely funny Rom Com!
Pranks so bad there is a contract in place to cease and desist!?! Sandra and Cooper have a ceasefire, yes a written ceasefire but now that their hometown town has a competition so awesome no one wants to lose all bets, and contracts, are off. Sandra the TV journalist is a real woman and when she wants to prank she dam well will and maybe that's what gets Coopers blood boiling - both in annoyance and in that classic school yard mindset 'she's picking on him so must loooovvve him'. His flame for her burns bright and if only the white flag was raised long enough maybe she would realise it was loooovvee that bound them in this hilarious game of cat and mouse. Let the pranks begin!
I read and loved book one, The 12 Dares of Christmas, of this series so much that I immediately started Mischievously Mine. Unfortunately, I just couldn't find any way of staying interested in the book because I didn't like the female main character. I haven't written this book off completely and plan to try to read it at a later date. I did like the male main character and the premise of the story. I was just surprised that I wasn't instantly captivated like I had been with book one.
