Alan P Woodruff - Lucius White Series Bk 1 - Kaleidoscope Reviewed 5/17/19 Drama, DUPLICITY, DECEPTION, AND DEATH all staring in a Hospital at the top level!
When Martin Bower, CEO of financially troubled Coastal Regional Hospital, is fired and charged with embezzling millions of dollars, he turns to his old friend, criminal defense attorney Lucius White. Opposing White is the ambitious, win-at-any-cost federal prosecutor who will do whatever it takes to convict Bower, and the hospital’s attorneys are only too happy to give her all the help she needs. White’s peril-riddled investigation is merely preluded to the dramatic trial during which the last clue linking all the crimes fall into place.
What did I like? Wow, there was so much to like! The characters, the intrigue in the storyline, the humor and the romance all rolled up in a Mystery Thriller.
What will you like? Stimulating, Sensational, Exciting, Thrilling, Humorous and Exhilarating are just a few of the adjectives that I would use for this book. The excellent writing style that is well developed and grows as the pages turn. Unique characters that are interesting and will capture your heart. Intense drama with lots of details and descriptions that keep you in the feel of the area and what is going on. The research that was done on the background information is extensive and shows on every page, this author really knows his stuff. This is going to be a great series and I am on to book two, The Medallion!
First of six published books in the Lucius White Series
I have read the first three Lucius White legal thrillers. I managed to read them in reverse order. Turns out they were stand-alone novels. I am in the process of writing reviews for The Medallion (#2) and The Nominee (#3.( I have already purchased The Witness, Triple Cross, and The Inmate, and this time will read them in the order published.) The stories were free of any hint of derivative plotting. The main characters are fascinating, and even a poorly-written story with them in it would be worth reading. But Woodruff tells a very good story, so it is win-win. A hospital on the brink of financial collapse and two lawyers plan an elaborate sting to cash in on this. A CEO charged with a crime he did not commit, a prosecutor who wants only a conviction, and not justice, and a team of defense lawyers you would want to have on your side. Add some Witness Protection elements, organized crime with a lot of money to launder, the theft of cutting-edge AIDS medicine, and lots of courtroom action. Even better, the series has only started.
What a fantastic story that is loaded with diverse, significant, caring, cunning and fierce characters, exciting dialogue and dramatic courtroom happenings. Martin Bower, the C.E.O. of a hospital, is fired due to financial wrongdoings, and Lucius White, Bower’s friend, and lawyer, comes to his defense, drawing you into a page-turning storyline that exposes some qualms about Bower’s innocence, exploitation, betrayal, deception, secrets, and lies, and a flawed health structure and an imperfect justice system, where nothing is what it seems, and how an event and murder will come into play, building up to an explosive ending, reminding us how some people will stop at nothing to get more power, influence, and money no matter who gets hurt.
"Kaleidoscope: A Lucius White Legal Thriller" (2019) by Alan P. Woodruff is a standalone first novel of four about attorney Luscius White. In this one, White defends the CEO of a hospital charged with embezzling six figures from his (now) former employer. I got a little confused trying to keep the myriad of characters straight, but the drama and my interest were maintained throughout the story. Recommended. [E-book given free in exchange for honest review.]
I love legal thrillers, and this one had very good court scenes with believable characters. It was slow going, though, for the first half of the book. I know that some set up was necessary, but there was so much that I actually started skipping whole sections. I've looked ahead, and the next outings of Lucius White don't sound like my kind of thing, so the next one's not on my Kindle. This was not a bad book, and the plot was sound. The ending did tie everything up, and for that I'm grateful.
Not everybody will like the same books. For me it was a fair read. It didn't keep my attention. I did like the parts that included the courtroom drama. I guess I was looking for more of it.
I won this book through a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review. Thanks for choosing me.
I thought I'd like this one, but it just wasn't for me. I can't give it a rating because I didn't finish it, it was simply a little too crass for me. Hopefully it finds its audience.
This is a very good read. There was a lot of different story line mysteries that were tied up neatly at the end by the author. I will definitely trying more books from this author.
I would prob give this 3.5 stars. Usually my 3 stars means that I didn't really like it at all. This book was fine and I can't really put my finger on what was wrong to me. The story was OK. The writing was fine. There was even a twist in the end. However, as I read this book, my mind kept drifting and I would skip parts of it. I just don't know why.....
