Magic runs through her veins, tempting her to use it, but Ruby isn’t sure how to control her new powers…until Ty, a dangerously handsome man from another world, spots her and identifies her as a witch. He offers some answers, but they come with a cost.
Not only does using her powers make her a target to others trying to steal her magic and slay her pet dragon, but each act of magic must be balanced—and magic takes whatever it wants.
Is all the chaos caused by casting a few spells to ruin her ex-boyfriend’s perfect skin worth it?
Heck yeah.
You’ll love this new adult urban fantasy series because it has everything you want to read about: magic, witches, dragons, romance, and a bit of good old-fashioned mischief.

Joynell Schultz spends her days working in a “reliable profession” as a veterinary pharmacist, which pays the bills, but isn’t nearly as exciting as creating alternative worlds writing speculative fiction. While shivering through the long northern Wisconsin winters with her husband, two children, and numerous pets, she enjoys reading, writing, and planning her next vacation.
When I started reading this story, I could not put it down. I read the book in one day. This author is an awesome writer. I can not wait to read more of their books. Keep up the great work. You should definitely read this book.

This is a truly wonderful book that I encourage all who may see this to pick up and read! Joynell’s books are just marvelous and you get such a good feeling reading them! You don’t have to worry about reading anything off-color because it isn’t there. The stories just captivate you and interruptions are very annoying when they come about.
I have had the great pleasure to read a lot of her books and I can tell you that she always delivers a Top-notch book that gives you such a warm glow to read.
Kudos to you Joynell! I am so lucky to have discovered you a few years ago. God has blessed you with such a wonderful creative mind and imagination to write books that everyone from young to old can relate to and enjoy! I for one can not thank you enough!
I look forward with anticipation to the continuing story of Ruby and Ty and the adventures that they’ll have as this series continues!
There is so much potential wrapped up in this narrative - a glimmer of an idea that could truly be phenomenal. A woman with witch blood, an invisible dragon, new life experiences and hidden realms. It’s all there!!!! But it still stumbled a bit with its presentation, falling into the emotional angst any 18 year old is bound to feel.... especially when confronted with the mind altering situations Ruby is facing. I get it, I do, but with such a set up - I wanted something more? Perhaps book 2 will offer that growth and actually flesh out the characters.
Pros: - Great potential! - Unique! - Luke. - not so sure about Ty....
Cons: - Felt flat. - Ruby is more invested in her ex than her present situation. - doesn’t live up to the build up. - Romance revelation felt forced and rushed.
I was not sure what to make of this book. Joynell Schultz did a wonderful job with the Angels of Sojourn series and I was unsure if she could live up to that in another series. I think that she needs a little more work to lift this novel out of the ranks of an almost-great book to a great book. She again created characters who are very human in their flaws and actions but who learn to accept the consequences of their actions and combined that with teen angst, college life and boyfriend problems and dragons. This is not just another academy book, but it needs a little more work to really compete with Harry Potter and Hogwarts..

Ruby’s mom died and left her the huge Victorian house that she was selling. Her boyfriend, Geoff, was going to college out-of-state, so she decided to do that too. Not able to afford both the large house and tuition out-of-state, she decided to sell. Salvation Army volunteers were moving out all the furniture and things, but making a mess of it until she couldn’t stand the memories anymore and kicked them out. Her goals now were to go off to college, begin life as an adult, and to learn how to use the “quarter-witch” of magic within her which never seemed to work. Her half-witch father had walked out on her mother long ago, but he asked her to give Ruby a magical silver coin to help her skills, telling her mother to warn Ruby that there were consequences to using magic.
When Geoff stopped by her tiny room at the dorm, he announced that they should break up! He had been the one that helped her keep it together when her mom died. She had moved out-of-state for him and sold her mom’s house to be with him! Was he serious about splitting up? She asked him to leave. It was a big campus – she could probably avoid him! Except that she had coordinated their first and last classes of the day to be together! Now she had to watch him flirting with other females – her pencil snapping in half might indicate that she wasn’t totally over him yet.
In the shadows under the professor’s table, she saw red glowing eyes staring out! They were Luke’s eyes, her imaginary dragon friend from childhood! Then the eyes faded. Was she going crazy? A voice asked if the seat next to her was taken and Liam introduced himself and sat down. He was a Junior. The girl behind Ruby introduced herself as Kat, and the three of them set a date to meet for coffee the next day. Day 1 of her Freshman year, and she already had TWO friends – and one was kind of cute!
At the coffee shop, Kat and Liam hadn’t arrived yet – but Geoff was there! The redhead from class sat with him, he moved beside her, and he kissed her! Thinking the redhead wouldn’t mess with him if she had seen his pimply skin in his high school days, Ruby played with the silver coin in her pocket that helped her magic work, and she wished Geoff’s perfect skin goodbye. Liam arrived and they went up to order coffee. He noticed her glancing at Geoff and told her next time Geoff looked her way, Liam would kiss her. Well, that certainly worked! Geoff scowled and Ruby thoroughly enjoyed the much better kissing Liam provided!
Entering class, Ruby saw red splotches on Geoff’s face! It was for the wrong reason, but she was pleased that her magic worked. She glanced over to an open door in the lecture hall and saw Luke, her imaginary dragon, was back! He went into a closet and something crashed loudly and everyone jumped! Um, was he imaginary or not?? She turned around and saw a man leaving – was Luke hiding from someone? The professor opened the closet, picked up a fallen podium, and no one at all seemed to see the golden dragon in there! Ruby got up and ran out of the room, running right into a man with blond hair. Both his hair and clothes were dirty and looked as if he were dressed for a medieval period play. Was this who scared Luke? What is happening that her imaginary childhood friend showed up again? What’s going on with Liam?
This is a very intriguing story right from the start. We meet a quarter-witch who has not mastered his skills, so anything can happen! She moves out-of-state with her boyfriend who dumps her as soon as they start classes! And some interesting people (and maybe even imaginary ones?) enter her life. The story line keeps things fast-moving and tense as the reader looks for answers as to what is going on. Grab your copy and keep up with this first book of the new series – it’s going to be a good one!

This is the first book in a series. I enjoyed this story because the characters are fun and quirky. This is the first story by Joynell Schultz and it was enjoyable. This is a young adult story that has magic, other dimensions, and of course dragons. One of the things that was refreshing is that it would be rated PG-13.
Ruby is starting college. Just months ago she lost her mother to breast cancer. She never knew her dad. Just before she died, her mother told her that her father was half witch and left a talisman for Ruby and she should always have it with her. It was like a coin with a dragon image on one side and writing on the other. Every time she tried to do any magic, it didn't work. Sometimes it would even go wonky. She is selling the huge Victorian house that she grew up in because as a college student, she couldn't afford it and school. She has her high school boyfriend, Geoff, who was supportive during the time her mother was ill and through her passing. She was going to the same school he is so they could be together and the school was two hours away from home. Another reason to sell the house. Of course, nothing every goes right all the time. Once they get to school, before the first day, Geoff breaks up with her. He tells her that he wanted to break up a year before but her mother got ill. So great, she gets to start college, at the college she went to to be near her boyfriend, sharing some of the same classes with him, when he dumps her so he can have the full college experiences like parties and other girls. This poor girl can't help feeling that everyone leaves her. Even her imaginary friend when she was little left her. She had an imaginary friend dragon. Golden body, red glowing eyes about the size of a fat cat. Well, everyone leaves her. Of course on her first day of classes, in her first class, a very good looking guy a few years older than her sits right down with her and chats her up.
Liam is in his junior year of college, and is taking more classes because he switched majors, so yes he is taking a freshman class. On the first day of class, he spots this beautiful girl and sits next to her. Since they were there 15 minutes before class starts, they had plenty of time to chat. They made plans to meet at the college coffee house the next day. Then they go do an underage club to dance. He is very respectful to Ruby and treats her special. He protects her from when Glenn wants to talk with her and she doesn't want to.
Ty is a guy that Ruby keeps running into, literally run into. First it was when she was leaving classes, then again at the underage club and then when she was going to do her laundry. He knows she is a witch because at the club, she spilled her drink all over both of their shirts staining them red. She magicly cleaned his shirt, totally cleaned it.
This story could have been a stand alone, because there wasn't really any cliff hanger to it. Well, there is the huge purple dragon she saw, but maybe she didn't really see it at all.

The Quarter Witch Chronicles: Dragons are a Girl’s Best Friend #1 – One of my favorite authors regardless of what she writes. I appreciated the humorous overview since I never know what most stories are about and I don’t have the time to look them up. The last dragon I cared about was Puff and I left him behind with my childhood, but this dragon is so sweet and intriguing, well.
The humor throughout this story made even the sad parts better. Yes, the first chapter is full of sadness and then the beginning of the second kicks her teeth down her throat. But then we met Liam and things improve drastically. Of course, there’s Luke the Dragon to help make the storylines interesting and intriguing. Although I don’t care for this age group, I liked the characters and their most of their dialog. Ruby’s constant state of panic and her bad thoughts were a little too much at times, but she’s eighteen and learning.
The author’s vivid imagination and descriptions always keep me entertained and there in the story and this story is no different. I’m glad the next two books come out in June; so far, this has been an interesting and fun read. I contacted the author to review her books and received this book through Booksprout. 4*
While the Dragon’s Away #2 –This story picks up about six months after Ruby discovers she’s a witch. She has a lot on her plate and now she needs sideboards to contain everything. There’s a powerful hunter from Ty’s realm and it’s about to hit the fan.
The storylines are engaging and intriguing. I like the new character, although she’s very dangerous for Ruby and company, you’ve got to admire her. Add to this mix, finals. Yep, what a couple of wonky weeks can do to a girl. There are secrets that come out in the wash, too, which I’ll keep to myself, they’re secrets! Good imagination and descriptions keep the reader immersed and then too quickly, the last page is read. Squawk!
There’s an overview, which I appreciate knowing about a book before I read it. I contacted the author to review her books and received this book through Booksprout. 5* The Quarter Witch Chronicles end.
Tales of Fairy Godmothers Series: Hidden #1- A lovely, heartwarming novella about discovery, love and kindness, and loneliness. Searching for her baby's father leads a pregnant fairy to new adventures and learning experiences, and a vast change to her life, while she shares her godmother skills without her magic. There's plenty of humor and danger included in this sweet story. 5*
Trapped #2- Another lovely, heartwarming novella about trust, love and kindness, and loneliness. Almost dead when saved by one boy after his brother captured the fairy in a vent less jar while hunting for bugs. Cared for by the human until she returns to her fairy world, she returns every year on her birthday seeking the human boy. Their friendship grows and they learn of each other and their worlds. On her second to last trip back, their friendship is shaken. Making her last wish to encompass four days in his world, they sort, work and love their friendship back. There's humor and sadness, but also joy in this well written, full of vivid descriptions novella. I contacted the author to review her books and received this through Booksprout. 5* Tales of Fairy Godmothers Series end.
I always love Ms. Schultz's stories. And Dragons Are a Girl's Best Friend is no exception! Ruby is a lot of fun to read about; I mean, not the circumstances that got her where she is in this book, having just lost her mother and moved far from home with her boyfriend of a few years, only to have him bail on her. But her personality, her quarter witch background, her smart and strong character, and her friends (including the awesome little dragon Luke)! The world-building done in this book sets up a really neat, interesting concept for the rest of the series, which I absolutely cannot wait to read! I'm totally curious to learn more about Ruby's father and what happened to him, not to mention finding out more about Luke, Ty, and where they're from. I'll also be interested to see how things play out with Ruby's house and her friend Sonja, who it seems may become a bigger part of Ruby's life going forward... we'll see! And, as is always the case with Ms. Schultz's works, the story is sweet, unique, imaginative, and intriguing. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it!
I loved Joy's Angels of Sojourn series and wasn't quite sure what to expect from this series. It seemed to be much more young adult and that's definitely not me any more, but she had me at 'dragon'. I have to say that I really enjoyed the book. The characters were well-drawn, with distinct personalities and foibles, and the mystery surrounding the two new men in Ruby's life was more than enough to keep me interested. Ruby is starting a new life at college but things are not going as planned. Her boyfriend throws a spanner in the works. Her 'imaginary' childhood friend reappears in her life. Another student befriends her and she keeps bumping onto a mysterious man wherever she turns. Nothing is as it seems and Ruby is struggling to make sense of everything that is happening to her. Magic suddenly appears to be all around her and she can't get a handle on her own powers, but help is at hand, if she can trust who it comes from. The story finishes but sets up for the next book. I'm looking forward to reading it.
I love all of joynell's books that I've read so far and this little dragon dude luke sounds like the cutest little guy, that would have loved to have my self. Ruby is the main character and the girl that finds out shes a witch right before her mother passes away right when shes getting ready to go off to college with her boyfriend Geoff while trying to get the house that was left to her from her mom ready to sell she breaks down while the salvation army is moving most of the donated furniture out when they accidentally damage a picture that reminded her of her mother which stops her from moving anymore stuff out meanwhile she goes to start her new life at college following her boyfriend only to be dumped the day before classes begin where she starts to meet her trouble in the form of a new boyfriend that really isnt wanting her as girlfriend but as a witch and starts causing more trouble for her then he's really worth it's a must read to see how she deals with this new guy and if he will win with his evil ways
This was such a cute little read! Dragons, Magic, Rude e-boyfriends, and two hot men ... absolutely!
Meet Ruby, she just lost her mom, her boyfriend, and moved two hours away to go to school ... a nightmare in the making. She learns that she is a quarter witch on top of it and has no one to teach her or talk to about her new situation. Enter Liam. Hot dude #1, who seems a little too good to be true to me. He's over the top and everything Geoff was not, but its too quick for me. I hate rushed relationship, in life and in literature and at least this girl had enough sense to notice it! UNTIL ... TY. I love Ty, but you need to experience him yourself!
Nitpicks * Insta-Love. (Yuck) * Why does she keep giving up the sense of hearing. She gives up taste, why not smell? Legit she never mentions smelling anything! This annoyed me to no end! * Someone wants to buy the house, but it seems like its just a random background thought and is never like a bad guy or has any bearing on the story.
Dragons Are A Girl’s Best Friend by Joynell Schultz is the first book in the Quarter Witch Chronicles. This book is such a fun read with a wonderful cast of characters that include a young witch named Ruby, a dragon named Luke she’s been friends with since childhood, and two young men Liam and Ty she meets while attending college. This book is full of mystery, excitement, adventure, and romance. I loved reading this book and am anxiously awaiting the next installment of The Quarter Witch Chronicles to find out what happens to Ruby and her friends next. Dragons Are A Girl’s Best Friend is awesome!
The story is about a witch coming into her powers following her mother's death and going away to college. She has a coin, it helps activate her power. Her childhood imaginary friend Luke returns after many years (he is my favourite character of course, oh yeah, forgot to mention his being a dragon).
Long story short, basically someone tries to leach her magic and of course she has no clue (although the minute he sat next to her you just knew he was up to something).
Likable characters and the storyline works but felt more YA to me but the more you get towards the end there seems to be a promise of more magic etc in the next book. Let's see.
Ruby is trying to heal after her mother's death (her only family) when she moves away to college. Geoff, her boyfriend, dumps her before the first day of class. She meets Liam in her first class, sees her childhood imaginary dragon friend, Luke, and bumps into Ty on the way out of class. She's supposedly part witch, and calls a hex on Geoff because he's already kissing someone else! And it works!! Let the fun and games begin! And the romance and confusion and mystery....
Stand alone HEA, though I'm going on to book 2. But there's no cliff hanger.
Contains no sex scenes, I don't remember any swear words, and violence (breaking and entering, knife wound).
Ruby's mother has died, she has just been told that she is one quarter witch, and she has to get the house ready to sell while she goes off to college. The first few days they are there, Geoff breaks off their relationship. Liam is friendly - but there may be a reason for that! What does Ty want from her? Can he actually see her imaginary friend, Luke the dragon? Who is trying to use her? And who can teach her more about her magic? What a great story!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I love Luke, the little golden dragon, best, besides the protagonist, Ruby, the quarter witch. The book starts with Ruby’s boyfriend, who has dragged her away from home to the college of his choice, proving himself to be a total, unredeemable SOB. The book forward goes from that point and gets really complicated n amazing n surprising. I can’t wait to read them all! Not sure how many have been written, but I’ll be eager to follow the characters wherever they take the stories!
Tragic orphans, college woes, bad boyfriends, Magic, Witches, and imaginary friends... where does a Dragon fit in? Worlds collide as humor and intrigue follow in an unpredictable aftermath. You will enjoy this rollicking adventure and the self-proclaimed nerd protagonist as she tries to sort out her place in the world as a young adult while coming to terms with her newly-discovered Witch powers. Satisfying series starter in what promises to be an ongoing saga full of adventure and romance!
Ruby has just learned she is one quarter witch, has lost her mother, heads off to college, and gets dumped by her boyfriend of three years. That’s page one and the story is just getting started. Ruby is trying to learn how to manage her magic while getting involved with Liam and Ty. Neither is who they seem to be and the adventures get started. Add in Luke who was Ruby’s imaginary childhood dragon and is now very real.
This is a story of romance, family, belonging, and a bit of magic. It was fun to read.
A good, paranormal romance. Ruby's lost a lot. But she's ready to start her life anew with college in a nearby town. Learns that she's a witch. She meets several new people. She also reacquaints with her dragon friend, Luke. Things go from bad to worse.
There are several wonderful moments as well as a few tense ones. Eventually a satisfying end.
Entertaining. Great world building. Romantic. Scary. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.
I received a review copy of this book from a third party. This is my honest review.
Another great book by Joynell Schultz! Her imagination is limitless and her stories always keep me totally ready to pick up my book at the end of a day. I read for the "take me away" moments and Dragons are a Girl's Best Friend delivers without disappointment. If you like mysteries with a nice bit of dragon-intrigue, you will love this story. It's fun and fast paced and keeps your mind following right along! Enjoy!
It’s hard just starting college, moving away from home and leaving everything familiar behind. But that is what Ruby does. She also sees her childhood imaginary friend, a dragon named Luke. And she has magic! Sometimes...
This story is fun, original, a fast, great story. I loved it and can’t wait for book 2.

This book was a joyful and light hearted read. I most enjoyed Ruby having a dragon as a best friend and their growing complicated relationship. I adored how this book had some romance, magic and mayhem but stayed light hearted and fun to read. I enjoy the major stories this talented author explores and how compelling they are from some others. I must bid you farewell for now as Iam off for another Ruby adventure in the mind of Joynell Shultz.
What do you get when you put together witches, dragons, magic and romance? Chaos ensues!!! A first book in a new series, "Dragons are a Girl's Best Friend" is just what I needed for a perfect afternoon reading. It hooked me right from page one and I finished it in one sitting. Can't wait for the next installment!

Ruby lost her mother a year ago, just started her first year of college, her boyfriend of three years dumped her the day before their first day of college after she decided to follow him to an out of state college, then after she goes on three "sort of " dates with a new guy, she's already planning a permanent relationship? The lead character acts more like a young teenager than a young adult. This isn't for me, I can't get past how childish the "heroine" is.
While I didn’t hate this book, I wasn’t all that enthused about it either after the first couple of chapters. Ruby is your average bumbling orphaned witch who has some boy trouble (definitely wouldn’t class them as men), and of course, magic ensues with some stumbles along the way.
I did adore Luke, but let’s face it, this was not the book for me.
I really wasn’t sure what I was going to make of this book, but I found myself pleasantly surprised. There was a bit of a mystery that would itself through the story as the main character finds herself dealing with a world she’s unprepared for in an emotional state of being. I found the character well-written and the plot was swiftly paced. I can’t wait to read the next book.
I truly enjoyed this story! I connected with the lead character in her quest to form new relationships while dealing with heartbreak and grief in an unfamiliar environment. Simultaneously, she was able to discover her abilities as a witch and was rejoined with an old friend, her dragon. There was an unexpected twist with one of the main characters, and an ending I did not expect either. It can be read as a standalone, but I personally would love to read more from this author!
