Human trafficking is the trade of people for forced labor or sex. It also includes the illegal extraction of human organs and tissues. And it is an extremely ruthless and dangerous industry plaguing our world today.
Most believe human trafficking occurs in countries with no human rights legislation. This is a myth. All types of human trafficking are alive and well in most of the developed countries of the world like the United States, Canada, and the UK. It is estimated that $150 billion a year is generated in the forced labor industry alone. It is also believed that 21 million people are trapped in modern day slavery – exploited for sex, labor, or organs.
Most also believe since they live in a free country, there is built-in protection against such illegal practices. But for many, this is not the case. Traffickers tend to focus on the most vulnerable in our society, but trafficking can happen to anyone. You will see how easy it can happen in the stories included in “In Chains.”

We have heard about human trafficking in vague terms, but the information in this book defines and clarifies it and brings it down to a personal level. When you read the words of human trafficking survivors, you are face-smacked with the reality that thousands of unwilling people are being enslaved today.
Humans are bought and sold for sex, for forced labor, and for forced military service. They are robbed of their lives and freedom with no way out. The victims are further victimized even after they rescued, usually arrested and deported for being in the country illegally, even though they did not come willingly. Many victims do not survive their captivity, dying from abuse or starvation or murder.
This book will change the way you view the world you live in.
I always thought there was sex trafficking only. come to find out there is a couple more types of trafficking. part of this book is unbelievable. however I did enjoy reading it and the stories. very good info
A good read if you’re looking for a mix of statistics and stories from survivors. The book covers everything from sex trafficking, organ harvesting, slave labour, child soldiers and more. One of the stories he briefly tells us the story of Ishmael Beah who’s book I read last called A Long Way Gone. This book really makes you realize just how under prosecuted human trafficking is across the world.
The book begins with the arrest of Robert Kraft, who at the time of publication, was awaiting a court case for his visit to an Asian staffed massage parlor. Of course, nothing happened to the billionaire and the law shut down the place which was filled with sex slaves from China. Backpage.com also makes the book as it was the number one go-to source for men looking for a good time. A few of the women forced into prostitution are given space to tell their tales of woe and it is all rather sad. Child soldiers, forced labor, and organ harvesting are also briefly covered and naturally, we here in America are the leading customers of the shady practice of organ removal; some of it voluntary by the desperate and other times after a murder. Some statistics are provided and, in the end, it all seems to be a lost cause. Evil has always triumphed over good.
If you are new to learning about human trafficking or want to update information on the subject while already knowing about it a bit, this is a good book!
Much of this book is about survivors of human trafficking that are short stories of how they were trafficked and how they were able to escape it.
The best part of this book, in my opinion, was when myths were busted a bit. A lot of people think that human trafficking and smuggling are the same thing or perhaps they think that all people who have been trafficked were kidnapped. This book explains what it really is and gives some examples too.
It is difficult to find a book about human trafficking that simply details facts for the everyday reader. This is a good, entry level book detailing the types of human trafficking, a few factual accounts, and information as to what happens after a victim of trafficking is given freedom. It also highlights how unwittingly we all can unknowingly be supporting human trafficking but does give pointers on how to spot a victim. An easy to read, logical and factual analysis of appalling exploitation.
This is an important book and should be widely read. Not only does it provide a comprehensive overview of trafficking in all of its branches, it also brings it home to your own neighborhood, to the room down the hall in your hotel, to your hospital, to your closet and grocery store. If more people were vigilant about trafficking and it's effects on all of society, the more likely we are able to stop it and save the survivors.
Great book!! Very informative and loved all the percentages of each type of trafficking. Some of it is astounding. You can tell this book was very well investigated. It is sad to hear of all the different types of trafficking and the torture these people and children go through; it is truly horrifying. I really enjoyed reading the stories of survivors. I am so glad some are free but we as a society need to do more and stop turning our heads.
This is an incredible book. Quite an eye opener about this secret dark world of human trafficking. This is a page turner that is hard to put down. The stories give you a complete account of the different types of trafficking and the countries it is happening in, including in North America. It also tells you what you should be looking for and where to look for it.
This book brings up such an important subject. I love true crime but this made me more aware of all the different types of trafficking that there are. The only way things can get better is to learn more and to spread awareness.
A disturbingly sober look into the prevalent and brutal crime of Human Trafficking. This book is a must for students of Criminal Justice and for anyone who wants to understand the dark epidemic that is occurring not just overseas, but in our own backyards.
You wont find a better book for details on human trafficking. The stories of the survivors is very compelling. It's a must read even though it's really sad what is going on in the world today
This is an eye opening recounting of trafficking and how it affects people. Definitely a good start in educating anyone about what happens to the victims
