“Beauty and the Beast meets Dracula in this tension-filled sequel with a strong female lead.”

Ruby Spencer hasn’t slept in nine years.

Which makes her dream-like visitor more peculiar. Liora, an alluring immortal, professes to know the source of Ruby’s unique blood: blood that saved humankind from a bioweapon; blood that enabled her to become the government’s warrior against ZOM-B.

One of Ruby’s blood donors is the King of Darkness. And that’s not the only revelation sending shivers down her spine. With animals dwindling on Earth and his planet, the king—an ancient vampire with unfathomable powers, has set his sights on a new blood source: humans on Earth.

If Ruby is to defeat the most odious force ever encountered, she must embrace her legacy as The Tether and awaken her gifts. But time is running out for humankind and her family.

Survival teeters in the balance.

"A shudder raced down her spine.
Something was coming..."

Ruby Spencer has surprised the world over and over.

She was the one (and only) human to be immune to the zombie apocalypse and nine years ago, she was transformed into a vampire (thanks to a unhinged genius).

She settled back into her "old" life but unfortunately, the past has a habit of creeping up on you.

"I merely wish to convey that your service to our kind has been a grave disappointment."

Ruby soon learns that she is not the only vampire around and with that realization comes dire consequences.

As danger looms closer, Ruby must draw upon herself and her family for strength and pray that they all make it out...alive.

"Just like that...she was living her final moments."

description
Overall - I am really pleased with this sequel!

The writing feels stronger and you can really tell that the author is getting into the swing of things and has a firm grasp on her characters.

I also really liked the direction of this book.

Never in a million years would I have guessed that Julia Ash was heading the "alien vampire" route...and I never would have expected it to work so well!

I think the grounded characters really helped bring about such a whimsical concept.

One thing that really stands out about this series is that the main character, Ruby, is already married and has a child. Their relationship is strong and stable (for the most part).

There's a little bit of boat-rocking here and there but there's nothing like what you typical see in books.

"New gifts have been awakening," she said...

. Though, in this one Ruby did gain a lot of power relatively quickly and it did feel a bit too much at first but eventually it balanced out.

I do think that the ending of the book was a bit....over-the-top.

I feel like if the love-angle was to be a major aspect of the book, it needed to be handled with more finesse. Not as much telling and more showing.

That being said, I did enjoy the how Ash wove in various moral dilemmas for Ruby to deal with in this book. That certainly made for an interesting dimension!

"Your blood is medicine. And you're denying her."

All in all, I definitely enjoyed my time between these pages and cannot wait for the next book!

With thanks to the author for a free copy in exchange for an honest review!

The ELI Chronicles Series
#1 The One and Only - ★★★★
#2 The Tether - ★★★★
#3 The Turning Point - ★★★★

As soon as I read The One and Only, the first book of the ELI Chronicles, I knew I had to finish the series. When Julia Ash reached out to me, letting me know the second book, The Tether, is available for review – I obviously jumped at the opportunity!M/i>

It took me a bit to get to it due to my busy schedule, but once I finally got my hands on The Tether and started reading it, I couldn’t put it down.

The Tether continues where the first book finished – Ruby managed to save the Earth from the ZOM-B disease and a possible zombie apocalypse, being the only person with a unique blood type that can provide a cure. And then she got turned to a vampire.

And when everything seems quiet, things are starting to escalate again. Ruby’s blood donors are from another planet, and one of the donors is the King of Darkness, an ancient vampire who is in search for food – animals and humans on Earth. And once again, it is up to Ruby to save the planet and her family. Only this time, she discovers she has way more power than she thought.

If you read my review on Book One, you will know I was confused and angry with how the first book ended. Right after a Zombie Apocalypse, we had a vampire ending. For a moment, I thought that once you start mixing too many things up, it can get confusing. But this series somehow manages to keep it all together, and it all logically makes sense. I just fear that perhaps people might not agree with me and find it confusing. I didn’t though.

Ruby, again, was my favourite character. She had to go through so much, and then learn to finally embrace it. She kept herself down on Earth, despite her power, and that made me like her even more. I also respect her so much for sacrificing herself for a greater cause, and always putting her family first!

Clay, oh, Clay…

We never got along buddy. But I couldn’t help but feel for Clay in this book, and he is slowly growing on me. He has to slowly age and then die, while his wife is immortal. Secretly, I hope he becomes a vampire too, so they can spend their eternity together, even though, let’s be honest, he won’t really bring anything much to the table. But I loved, how he sacrificed himself for his family, and stood up against bullies, even if they were immortal vampires.

I loved our main villain in this book – Zagan. For he had reasoning for everything he did, even though it was wrong. He had a purpose and a goal, and he did have a pinch of good inside him. But he also had evil, and that was never gonna change.

Interestingly enough, and a big no-surprise for me was the government. Their corruption and the depths that they were willing to go to reach their goal was scary – and very accurate to what actually is currently happening in the world. The fear is also represented, and how differently they react as soon as they see someone who has more power than them. Their thinking of making new people similar to this one case, that they could use for greater goals. This moment was captured in the book in a great way, as it is a great discussion point and a very painful subject at the same time for some people.

The new planet, new characters, new powers was an interesting switch within the book. I didn’t expect that at all, but I was pleasantly surprised with how it all fitted in. It was all well thought of, The Tether story, the tree, the blood connection with Ruby, the link between the planet and Earth, the concept of how people lived their belief of healing what they were hurting and keeping the balance. The one thing that confused me was the mentions of their heartbeats, as I thought vampire’s hearts don’t beat.

I really enjoyed The Tether and it ended perfectly, getting us ready for the third book and Ruby’s next challenge. I highly recommend it – it is a real page-turner with incredible plot twists!
Thank you to the author, Julia Ash, for sending me a copy of The Tether, in exchange for an honest review!

My rating 4.5

The second part of the trilogy, "The Tether (The ELLIE Chronicles # 2)" by Julia Ash, introduces us to a completely different world from the first book and is more fantasy-based than the first part. Although it has less action than it has in the first part, this book does not fall behind the first part, because here the emphasis is on the psychological part of Ruby's thinking when she finds herself next to a more dangerous enemy. This time, the Earth is threatened by a much more dangerous enemy than the zombies, and Ruby will discover the real truth about himself. But Ruby will find that a force with no mercy for the human race is involved in events on the planet. The writer delighted me with her imagination and guides us with subtle precision through a story in which every Ruby move, if she makes a mistake, can lead to the downfall of the entire planet. It was a pleasure to read the second part, and I hope to read the sequel soon. I would recommend the book to fans of science fiction and fantasy related to vampires.

I've read many, many books over the years, but few have stayed with me for as long as Julia Ash's first novel, The One and Only. A zombie/vampire/horror/thriller, it was unlike any book I'd read before, and its fantastic ending set the scene perfectly for book two. So, it was with great excitement that I picked up The Tether last week.

Book Two introduces the reader to a completely different world than the first, and contained strong elements of dark fantasy and science fiction. This said, The Tether was every bit as surprising, as action-packed and as imaginative as The One and Only, and there was not a single page that I failed to enjoy. I already can't wait to read The Turning Point, the final episode in the series!

If you're in the mood for a gripping story filled with adventure and memorable characters, do give this series a go. I promise that you won't regret it.

5 dark stars for an unexpected and incredibly imaginative sequel.

Love can change hearts. Can cause beings to act in contrary ways to protect those whom they love. History shows light can turn to darkness. Angels can fall.

Nine years have passed since Ruby had been turned into a vampire and despite being humanity's saviour, she still can't really get used to her vampiric state. You'd think that as time had passed, she would have embraced her new existence. And yet, the longer Ruby was a vampire, the more she struggled with looking, acting and feeling human. And the more the distance between her and Clay grew.
And taking into account the fact that Clay and their little daughter Gaby were Ruby's life, that is something that doesn't fall quite right with Ruby.
Bottom line: vampirism sucked.
And all Ruby could do was try her best to adjust, hoping and praying for an as normal as possible, peaceful life.
But we all know that,
As much as we believe, we don't always get what we ask for.

And Ruby will have to face a challenge greater than any of those in her past. Because, something was coming... Something that gravely endangers not only Ruby's family but humanity as a whole.

When a dream-like visitor claiming to be an immortal vampire queen contacts Ruby vouching she knows the source of her unique blood: blood that saved humankind from a bioweapon and also enabled Ruby to become the government’s warrior against ZOM-B.... Ruby can't help finding it all a bit surreal.
A queen, an evil king, a faraway planet, a warning.
More than enough to have her locked away in a psychiatric ward if she wasn't careful.

And that warning she receives:
You must embrace your gifts and defeat him. Before our worlds collide.
is not the only thing sending shivers down Ruby's spine.

As it turns out, one of Ruby’s blood donors is the King of Darkness. An ancient vampire with unfathomable powers. And he has already set his sights on a new blood source: humans on Earth.

The stakes are now higher than ever before and Ruby is caught in a game of cat and mouse with the most powerful adversary she had ever encountered.
She must either embrace her vampiric state and learn to use all the gifts that come with it, or loose everything she holds dear.

I would have never imagined the sequel of an apocalyptic thriller to head down this route - alien vampires, prophecies and lots of other pretty cool fantasy concepts, like 'sculpting' or 'whispering'. And if you had told me about it, my reaction would have been a clear cut: No Way!! This won't work at all!!
Except that it did!

Julia Ash pulled it like a charm. Using a blend of genres, from apocalyptic thriller to sci-fi, myth and fantasy, she seamlessly weaves them together creating a unique and fabulous tale in which everything connects and falls into rhythm perfectly. The evil king is the perfect adversary for Ruby, leveling out the scales and upping the game.

And yet, he wasn't the worst character here. That award goes to Emory Bradshaw, the despicable scientist we've met in The One and Only. I swear that creep made all my hackles rise and saying that I wish he would rot in the seventh circle of hell, is a huge understatement. With him, this author created one heck of character to absolutely hate! Kudos for that!

The Tether is a lot more fast-paced then its predecessor. The writing is stronger, just as the characters. Ruby and her daughter did seem to come into their powers a little bit too easy, and a part towards the end did come off as a bit too much. And yet, I couldn't set this down.
The pace was relentless, the story amazingly imaginative and downright addictive.
And the characters ... AWESOME!
Do note that I'm not talking only about the major ones here. The supporting characters were all just as meticulously crafted. Each and every one of them with little quirks and distinct personalities that made them downright memorable. My favorites were Neviah Bain and Atea. Because I love a quirky and strong woman, even when she appears only in a secondary role.

I loved Ruby, as well as her daughter and her husband. And the relationship between them has been written so well, that you cannot help but connect to each and every one of them.
The difficulties between a human husband and a super powerful vampire wife, as well as those set on the shoulders of a little girl, were wonderfully described and I couldn't help but empathize.

The moral dilemmas were another highlight for me here.

Every act, every thought, every word carries the weight of consequences.

Would it be right to deny the use of your blood when that could save a life? Would it be right to turn the scales and turn the predator into prey for humanity's benefit? Where do you draw the line and how do you decide, what is right and wrong?

All in all, this was an original and totally unexpected fantastic adventure; incredibly imaginative, gripping and addictive and I am looking forward to the sequel.

If you're in a mood for a fresh and original read full of edge of the seat adventure and fabulous characters, pick this series up.
I guarantee you won't regret it.

Best roller coaster ride ever!!

This book was the best roller coaster ride, it twisted and turned, without me knowing where it was going next.

I think the creepiest character is the mad scientist. He’s the biggest manipulative, slim ball ever. He gives me the bad type of
shivers down my spine and makes my hair stand on end.

Ruby also known as the tether is strong and caring, with much compassion. She’s also a scientist ( as is her husband Clay)and as smart as the crazy scientist. She’s been through a lot, yet continues to be positive and fight for her family (whom she loves more than anything) and the other people who are innocent and need her. Her daughter Gabby is 9 and is very smart, with extraordinary gifts. Ruby has sacrificed a lot for the good of the people on Earth, but also the vampire on Skotadi who all live in fear.

The vampire of Skotadi live under the rule of their king Zagan, a king who rules with fear and can turn any of his people to dust, with but a flick to his hand. He does truly evil things, yet we get to see glimpses of good in him. I was rooting for him to change. You’ll have to read to find out if he does.The journey is quite interesting.

There’s a lot of moving parts making everything come together, in the book. There’s never a dull moment, something is always going on, moving into place. As the reader you know all these things are happening, just not how they’ll turn out and often it’s a surprise what actually happens. There’s supernaturals with gifts, good, evil and some kinda in between. There’s a curse on Skotadi that needs to be broken, also a Good queen that plays a role in things, as well as other characters. The saddest death was Titans, that whole scene was heart breaking, what a true hero even when death was upon him!!!

I loved every minute, every second of this series up to this point. I found it interesting, it intrigued me, I just wanted more, more, more. I loved the science part of thing’s and the supernatural part, how everything came together seamlessly and unpredictable. When I started reading the last chapters, I couldn’t have told you how it was going to end. I waited with baited breath, trying to read as fast as I could. It blew my mind, how thing’s ended.

Guess what???? There’s a book 3 omg, I can’t wait. I don’t know if it’s out yet or not, but I do know I’ll be reading it 😜.

Thank you Author Julia Ash for bringing us such a wonderful experience, through your very talented writing. Reading is away for me to de stress, leave my troubles behind and get lost in books that move me, entertain me and these books have done that for me!!

Wonderfully Creative

Great follow up to the One and Only. Once I started reading I just couldn’t put this well written, descriptive book down. It was as if I was in each world. The human made vampire trying to save the earth and humankind from a planet of Vampires ruled by an evil King with insurmountable powers. You are on the edge of your seat throughout as so many new unexpected supernatural surprises continue to enthrall your interest. I highly recommend this book to people who love the supernatural, vampires, and zombies! Guaranteed to see things from an exciting different perspective!

This second installment of the Eli Chronicles has me me HOOKED!

Julia Ash has opened up vast new worlds and genres with this book. We now have new realms and worlds to explore.

And for Ruby, that brings more and otherworldly problems. We come to learn from where and how Ruby receives the gifts that helped her save the world in TOAO. At the close of that first book, we also learn that Ruby gets turned into a vampire. Completely unique to the world and an endowment of incredible gifts, some cool, some downright scary lethal and powerful.

Then with TT here, we learn that And THEN we get some prophecies thrown into the mix like all the really awesome fantasy I read as a kid.

I digress... Story starts out with still dealing with the eco-effects from all the crap that the ass-at bad guys have been doing. We get a little bit of heartbreak, then some relief. Then a certain type of material starts getting the global sized fan and everybody's got to start working on a solution.

At the core of those problems is a guy named Zagan. Like all good villian's he's kind of a tool. I vacillated between wondering, dude, do you understand you're a tool? Why do you have to do all these mean things? But then at other stages, it's like, "oh, so the guy is so clueless, he doesn't even realize everyone hates him and would get rid of him at the first chance." And of course, Zagan gets obsessed with Ruby and vacillates between wanted to cap her and the family to wanting to marry her. It must be tough for her being that popular.... And it is. That's another dramatic element I like. People always WANT stuff from her and don't seem to have any problem TAKING when they can.

Anyway, another digression. So the plot goes around a conflict between Ruby and Zagan. Take a wild guess who comes out on top. Yup. (OOPS, should that have been a spoiler?? -- Nah!!)

And I like the pithy quotable stuff in TT. Like:

"This is survival of the fittest," he answered, without hesitation.
"You mean: survival of the most selfish. The most ruthless."
"And shortsighted to boot," Clay added.

One area I think Ruby stumbled was that But no one is perfect, not even Ruby, so I thought that gave the story a great human feel. I had only one little minor plot issue that left me wondering, but even that might just as easily have been my interpretation.

The writing is clean, engaging, and exciting. There's all kinds of really really cool world-building. I love it when a writer can create a whole world, with distinct people and cultures, and sort of weave it all into the story. Julia Ash does that here. And it has some loose ties to our own existence, so that gives it some extra credibility and appeal.

As long as you like fantasy, there's really nothing in here not to like. I am kind of wondering how TTP is going to be since essentially Ruby ends up being pretty much omnipotent. But I am very excited to see that play out in the third installment!

Five stars for a job very well done in my humble opinion.

Overall, I was pretty satisfied with this follow up to The One and Only, book one in this continuing series. We pick up the story right at the end of the first book, which had ended with a pretty big twist. The continuation actually carried the series into a different genre (fantasy) than I would have classified the first book (horror). At first, I struggled a little bit with that change, but as the story progressed, I gradually settled into it and ultimately enjoyed it.

I continue to like our main character, Ruby, a lot. She's strong, and has to deal with some tough situations. I enjoy her strong character. The other characters fill in the story well and run the gambit from good to pure evil. In the end, there was a good resolution that included some fun twists and turns.

One thing I enjoy a lot about this series is that it feels pretty fresh and original. It's an interesting idea, and I like the way all of the pieces of the story (even with the transition) all connect and make sense. I definitely will read the next book when it is released. For me, I would say I'm at 4/5 stars.

The Tether took a very different turn to it's predecessor, The One and Only. The Tether took a more paranormal, fantasy theme - and I really enjoyed the change of genre.

The Tether continues on from The One and Only, but 9 years in the future, with Gabby as a very sweet and competent child who can now walk and talk! However, Ruby is frozen in time a vampire, with Clay aging every day but Ruby remaining the appearance of 27. Clay doesn't approve of this and wishes to become a vampire, but Ruby hates her new captivity and body as a vampire, and wishes that things were the same as before - or even during - the ZOM-B stage.

Then a new bad guy comes into play. Zagan is dangerous but seductive, and quite captivating for Ruby. But with Liora whispering into Ruby's head - literally - Ruby soon learns that Zagan isn't to be trusted.

Ruby and her family must journey to other worlds on a mission to - once again - save the world and restore peace to humans. With people disappearing at every turn, Ruby's past being dragged up and Gabby showing extraordinary power for a human, Ruby and her family have quite a trip to go on.

And in the background is an old enemy, prepared to do anything to escape his prison....

~~~
This was really fun sequel! I enjoyed the new style, the kick-ass characters and the unique glamours. The characters faced moral dilemmas as well as physical ones, and friendships were made and broken. I look forward to reading the conclusion to this fun series when it's released! Thank you, Julia!
Julia Ash has done it again with, The Tether, the second book in the Eli Chronicles. In this story, Ruby is adjusting to her life as a supernatural being and all the perks and challenges that come with that. When The King of Darkness appears, Ruby’s world is shaken, creating some tough decisions for her to make in order to save her family and humanity.
Ash’s talent as a storyteller and world builder, shines through in this page-turner. Her characters, including the villain, have depth, which makes them intriguing and contributes to the tension throughout. For anyone who enjoys darker fantasy thrillers, The Tether (along with the first book in the series, The One and Only) is a must read that I highly recommend!
In book two, it seems as though things pick up right where they left off from book one. There is a little background at the beginning of the book explaining some of the events that took place in the first book. As someone who didn't read book one, this was helpful.
I found the overall premise to the interesting, especially the meaning behind the title. I enjoy when book titles actually play a role within the story. Overall, the story keeps you turning the pages.
I had a little trouble with the characters at times. Sometimes I really liked them and other times I didn't. Ruby is a strong protagonist and she was great, though I felt as though there wasn't too much growth for her by the end of the book, despite all she and her family went through.
Overall, this is a well-written and interesting vampire story.
Why did I find THE TETHER “surprisingly good”? In a few words, I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. The reason is that sci-fi, fantasy, and especially stories about vampires, zombies, and all degrees of in-between those two states rarely get a read from me. But the many positive reviews of this author’s previous book made me curious. And you know what? I couldn’t stop reading THE TETHER because it is so well written.
The characters are lifelike, believable, human...yes, even the vampires! Take Zagan, king of evil. He should be loathsome...and he does loathsome things. He’s ruthless, cruel, narcissistic. But even he comes across as human. He may be thirsting for human blood, but it’s the human-like Zagan, who suffers with his inner demons, his 200,000 year old memories, and his confusion about this half-human, half-vampire nemesis, Ruby, that hooks us.
And Ruby is just so human though gifted with powers that rival Zagan’s. The old TV show “Bewitched” came to mind often as I felt the love and willingness to understand his wife’s abilities coming from her husband. Mix all that into an intriguing plot exploring yet again the concept of good vs. evil, delivered through realistic dialogue and great visual descriptions and it’s easy to see why i gave this book 5 stars!
This was the sequel I was waiting for! It was great to see Ruby come into her own and kick a**! This book resides more in the realm of fantasy than the first, but with the same great notes of intrigue, action, and horror that the first book gave us. I’d love to see a pure horror book from this author at some point because man can she write a creepy and tense scene.
I loved several characters and then was distraught as I had to watch them go through the wringer. Some make it, some don’t... tears ensued.
I can’t wait to see what the third book brings!
I really enjoyed this follow up to The One and Only. Ash took the story in some interesting directions that were very unexpected.
The Tether opens 9 years after the events of The One and Only, with Ruby and her family living with her new affliction. I can't say a whole lot without giving too much away but Ash has flipped aspects of vampires and zombies around on their heads and created something new and quite fresh. She is in her element writing tense action scenes, and on more than one occasion had me gasping.
I am really looking forward to book 3 of this series.
A really fun sequel in the series. We go from semi-plausible zombie/vampire infection to full blown new world inhabited by ancient vampires. The world building is done well and puts you right in the thick of the new planet. The politics between the warring factions was fun, and if anything I would have enjoyed more of that intrigue. Overall similar cast but very different overall and a lot of different areas to explore going forward. Excited for book three!
Wow...I didn’t see this coming...I’ve read lots of vampire books but nothing like this. Unique, engaging and fast-paced.
It’s been 9 years since Ruby became a vampire. The number of zombies are dwindling. But instead of being able to go back to her life and raising her daughter, she starts having visions. A woman named Liora visits Ruby in her sleep-like state. Liora says she knows the reason for Ruby’s unique blood. When Ruby was still in her mother's womb she almost died but blood from someone else saved her life. The blood of the King of Darkness, an ancient vampire. With the animals dying out on their planet and on Earth as well, the King of Darkness has a nefarious plan: he wants the blood of humans on Earth. Ruby won’t let that happen though. She will learn to use her new powers and will become the Tether to defeat the King.
Ruby is like Alice in Resident Evil. Tough, brave and willing to go to the end of the world to save the people she loves. She’s changed a lot since the beginning of the the first book. She became more cunning, even more fearless. I admire her determination and strength and her love for her family.
I think I’m starting to figure Clay out. He has more role in this book but he still depends to much on Ruby. But now it finally makes sense. Ruby is faster, stronger and smarter than him, she is more able to protect their family than Clay but he is able to accept that and that makes him a real man. It’s so very hard for him to come to grips with the fact that he has to rely on Ruby and not the other way around.
The King of Darkness is a complex character. He is millions of years old and evil to the core. But as the story goes and we get to know him more, he turns out to be more than just pure evil. He is deeply in conflict with himself. He is vile and violent, incapable of trust but he also changes, at least tries to. I hated him at first but when I reached the end of the book I pitied him instead, even felt sorry for him.
The world-building is astonishing, the new characters are fascinating and I loved the whole Tether thing, how everything connects to everything and it all makes sense. I enjoyed the book and I can’t wait to find out what Julia Ash will surprise us with in the next book.
Fantasy building on horror
While book one in this riveting series focused more on the horrors of the zombie apocalypse fallout and political/ethical morality, and what price is too high to pay for humanity's salvation, Ruby now faces the new challenges of the morality of good and evil and her new role as savior but not only in our world. With this new dose of moral bouts comes exciting new tales of fantasy, taking a turn away from the horror readers experienced before, but leaving little doubt that the next installment will surely bring both plots to collision in epic strides. Being the tether being humanity and immortality, salvation and survival, is no easy task and Ash continues to enthrall readers with Ruby's heroism and wisdom, making us reflect as she does on hoping for the best but guarding for what's sure to come, and overcoming it at all costs.
Ruby does indeed get the job done. This is a perfect example of mixing horror and fantasy together for an amazing novel.
If you love vampires, anti-heroes, and snarkiness, you’ll love Julia Ash’s The Tether. It’s a great addition to the paranormal and fantasy genre with a bit of romance.
Main character Ruby Spencer is a human who was immune to the zombie apocalypse…but became a vampire. Ruby ends up in several moral dilemmas as she navigates her new vampirehood. She was an easy character to root for. It was also nice to see a main character who was already married who has a child.
I unfortunately didn’t read the first book in the series, but I’m going to have to go back and read it now!
Ruby Spencer is an immortal vampire. Shes's fast, strong, intelligent, and she doesn't dream. And yet one sleepless night brings a night vision. Liora, an immortal, warns of oncoming danger. The king of Darkness. He is a vampire intent on using Earth as his new blood supply. Ruby must embrace her vampirism if she is to defeat the threat and finally gain the answers she's been so diligently seeking.
The Tether is the sequel to The One and Only by Julia Ash. Although you could read this book as a standalone, I recommend reading the first book before this one. Reading them in order not only makes the story so much more thrilling but also brings you into the characters' world. I think it is a much more enjoyable experience to read the books as the intended series that they are.
This book is set several years after the end of book one. Ruby's vampirism is explored, and the author uses this to be imaginative in her writing.
The Tether is different from The One and Only. Book one concentrates on the zombie apocalyptic world and surviving it. Although this book's background is that world, the actual story diverts from the zombie storyline and becomes more fantasy inclined. I applaud this choice. I think it could have been somewhat repetitive if book two carried on in the same vein as book one. The sheer difference in plot choice, however, led to an unexpected but welcome storyline. I also think the new ideas made this book stand out from other books in this genre.
The characters are well developed and diverse in their range. The recurring characters are established further, and the author introduces new ones with flair. The contrast between light and dark becomes a theme in this book that is portrayed by the characters themselves. The line between good and evil becomes more blurred the further you read. I like this idea because this book challenges the characters and presents the idea that the rules have changed.
Ruby is a powerful protagonist. She is clever and capable, but the love that drives her is her defining trait. Her loyalties to Earth and her family are the driving forces behind her actions. I enjoyed Ruby's perspective the most because you can always count on some action or trouble to follow wherever she goes. Ruby was my favorite part of the book because of how she deals with the situations presented to her and how she is willing to fight the seemingly hopeless fight.
The Tether is a very addictive book. You want to keep reading and, before you know it, you've finished the story. Punctuation and grammar are good throughout the book, with minimal writing errors.
Altogether, a very good book!
Julia Ash’s second novel of a trilogy, THE TETHER, is an epic vampire fantasy that skillfully stands up on its own.
Maryland wife and mother Ruby Spencer, the world’s only vampire, is summoned to save earth from Zagan, the King of Darkness, who needs human blood for his kingdom to survive.
The most enthralling parts of the story take place in Annapolis and Washington DC when Ruby has a very realistic conflict of interest in protecting her human family versus the planet. There are references to a President’s impeachment, environmental issues, and national security that no longer seem far-fetched.
As typical of fantasy fiction, there is a hell of a lot of chapters. Some of the secondary character story lines disappear for long stretches of time and then return, seeming a little muddled.
All in all, Ms. Ash has an overdose of a wild imagination that ensures her novels gain a very devoted following.
The Tether is the second installment of the The Eli Chronicles series which follows the main character, Ruby Spencer fight to save humankind in a future world. While the first book sets up the series, the second book continues to expand on the lore of the world and the world building. I ended up enjoying the sequel even more than the first novel!
While zombies were the main nemesis of the first novel, vampires are the villains in this installment. I like that the story picked up right away from the beginning of the novel and once again the reader is taken on another adventure. Ash keeps the post-apocalyptic feel to the series, but adding vampires and the otherworldly place of Athanasia gave the book a fantasy feel which I enjoyed.
I liked how Ash created her own lore around vampires and gave it a twist. It made the story really interesting and I appreciated the overall mystery aspect of discovering entirety of Ruby's powers and her prophecy involving Zagan who was a pretty cool villain. It was action packed, entertaining to read, and we get a whole lot of new characters to add to the game. I'm curious and excited to see how the story will continue in the next book!
Wow. I started reading this science fiction/fantasy thriller yesterday afternoon, and I never expected to finish it today, but I could not put the book down!
Julia Ash's first novel, The One and Only, was an unusual, atypical zombie tale, unlike any I've read before. And this one is an unconventional and original vampire thriller with both science fiction and dark fantasy elements, as well as fairy-tale-like themes, unlike any vampire story I've ever read. I never would have expected a vampire planet!
This well-written, fast-paced sequel has plenty of action, subplots that are easy to follow, intrigue and suspense, and outstanding characterization. Every character is vividly portrayed. One character I really liked was Atea, the New Zealander guide. I was hoping the sociopathic Em would show up again, and he does, as an imprisoned mad scientist. There's a great twist at the end that will make readers eager for the third book.
Thanks to the author for sending me a paperback copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This apocalyptic novel is all that it should be. What I particularly like is how, despite it typically being a story of mutation, futuristic capabilities being accepted as the norm and obviously necessary, it still has a strong focus on family, love and affection. This to me makes it readable and ensures that I am invested in the outcome. Ruby is an excellent character. Although, to some extent formulaic with hierarchical issues to contend with The Tether is well written and a real page turner.
If you like fantasy, you'll enjoy The Tether. It's the second in a series, but you don't need to read the first one to enjoy the story of Ruby and her quest to save the world. It's smart, engaging, and really hard to put down! I finished it in just two days, and looking forward to the conclusion of the series! 5/5 stars
Overall, an enjoyable read, and a fun blend of paranormal and fantasy. I was a little wary towards the beginning of this book when it seemed to be another Chosen One™ storyline, though to be fair, I hadn’t read the first book to know the full setup. But despite the mildly cliche evil king of vampires, I ended up ultimately enjoying the characters and story. (I admit I might be a tad bit biased, as I have quite a villain fetish.) Ruby is a very likeable character, and the book was well-paced.
I also appreciated that the author managed to summarize the events of the first book without it being a complete info-dump. She worked in the details in a way that felt very natural, so I was able to enjoy the story completely as a standalone book. I would definitely read more from this author.
Superbly Thought Out
I loved everything about this book. From its quirky characters to the exciting plot and the heartbreaking reality of a future none of them wanted.
The story is written in a way that I felt like I was part of it, and although this was the first book I found in the series, it made me want to explore the other books, too.
