Since he was a small boy, his father has expected him to become a powerful mage and redeem his family’s honor. Even if his heart was elsewhere, Yanko always accepted his responsibility. He’s learned all he can about magic, practiced to become powerful, and fought great evil to free thousands of imprisoned people.
But it’s not enough.
Prince Zirabo tasks him with claiming a new land for their nation and keeping it out of the hands of all those who covet it. Even though Yanko has a few good friends to help him, he’s daunted by the enormity of the task. But securing the continent and turning it into a lush farmland may be the only way to end the civil war at home and bring peace to people who are hungry, beleaguered, and divided.
Yanko will have to use all of his power and draw upon everything he’s learned to succeed and bring peace to his war-torn nation. If he can’t, he’ll lose his home, his family, and all that he loves.
A great book and the perfect ending or begining of Yanko's story. This book has everything action adventure, romance and great character development.
Yanko has come a great way since the start of the series, but I think he make the biggest bounds towards his destiny in this book. Over the course of the series it has not been hard to notice Yanko becoming more powerful, but this is the book that really makes him a leader, not just someone following orders but someone doing the best for the greater good. I also like that Yanko keeps up his martial training along with his magic. I think it is great to see him develop in both areas.
From the title of the book it is not hard to see the role Yanko us to fill, but it is the journey of how he gets there. Through his deeds and the way he treats others. Yanko dispute his naivety is quite sharp and perceptive. Though him being so naive is part of his charm. He is perfect for the position because he does not covert it, thinks of others before himself, and is the only person who cannot see this.
All in all a great book, and ending, I personally think both epilogues were great, my only regret of this series is that it us over. I am really hoping with enough fan pressure to see the series continued.
Great volume through and through :D from the new continent back to Nuria, everything fits in the narrative nicely with some epic battles here and there. The story wraps up nicely, albeit without much surprise. Highly recommended nonetheless!
More characters to love! Sad to get to the end, when I just want their stories to carry on. And with even more crossover with Emperor’s Edge characters. 😉 Thanks for another wonderful series read, Ms. Buroker!
Not quite ready to leave this world, so I may have to ignore my TBR pile and opt to reread the lot of them again. *happy reader*
I can't... I don't even know where to start in reviewing this, but I gotta say, Yanko is great.
The only thing I will say is that for the second half is that it was heavy on action, subplot romance (x2! Dak, I totally approve!!!) and political chaos! I did kind of guess Zirabo's candidate, but I also didn't think it would happen (this is Buroker we're talking about, she can sometimes pull out a complete about turn and surprise me as a reader). I am glad it happened though, because Yanko is great. He is suuuchhhh a geek for earth science.
I have no idea what to read now, especially now that I've read all the books within the world of the Emperor's Edge books.
OH, that reminds me, I loved seeing Amaranthe and Sicarius popping up in this series. They're my favourite.
Okay, now to decide which Lindsay Buroker series to read next.
Warning! I am a big fan of Lindsay Buroker, so my opinion might be slightly biased. This book will be considered a literary masterpiece and will soon be required reading at prominent universities and will be found on bookshelves next to classics like Moby Dick and Tom Swift and his Flying Lab... Enough silliness, this storyline was the last of Lindsay's "Emperor's Edge" universe that I read and I enjoyed it every bit as much as the other storylines (Emperor's Edge and Encrypted). Lindsay's writing style is enjoyable and, be warned, it could be classified as a "gateway drug" (I know --- I'm addicted). If you have made it this far, please consider reading her adventures of Yanko as he struggles to learn magic, faithfully serve his prince, claim a new continent for his country, end a civil war and avoid conflicts with the Republic of Turgonia and Pirates. This series has everything, Lindsay, thanks for putting together such a wonderful ending to Yanko's adventures.
A great conclusion to a great series. It was worth the wait for the author to finally get this to print, but I am really glad she did. I will be rereading this series again and again. It is a great story with strong characters that you feel for and care for. Very much worth the read. And thank you Lindsay for finishing this series.
Always enjoyable, wonderful characters. 4 instead of 5 only because I have to skip over some of the fighting/action scenes which I find exceedingly tedious as they have no dialogue.
This has some of the same problems as the previous two books. While Yanko earns some serious respect, his inner circle's faith in him is still a little much to believe in my opinion. I also didn't enjoy the first half of the book on the recovered continent: while some of it was interesting, it was a bit plodding and the eventual action and resolution relied pretty heavily on some seriously foolish decisions by both Yanko and pretty much everyone else at the end of that conflict. The rest of the book was really good, though. Everything that happened in Nuria was pretty exciting and well paced, even if it was ultimately some pretty cheesy YA stuff with a pretty hard to believe thing happening off-page to conveniently deal with most of the warring factions and set up the introduction of Zirabo's pick for Great Chief. Overall, this wasn't a particularly strong series, but it was a lot of fun to read and Buroker showed that she really knows how to keep my eyes glued to the page past my bedtime.
I totally adored both Lindsay Buroker’s Edge of Empire series and the related Chains of Honor series. Now, in its fourth book, Great Chief, the latter comes to a resounding conclusion. Yanko White Fox may be facing loss of his home, his family, and all that he loves but I’d never count him out. If anyone has the ability to bring peace to his war-torn nation it is Yanko and he will find the reserves of power needed to do so. This is one heck of a story and a totally fantastic series-ended that (no surprise with this author) is simply superbly written and loads of fun. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend.
I looked forward to reading this series after finishing The Emperor's Edge, Forgotten Ages, and various other series by this author. However, I must admit that I'm only barely into this last book and I'm totally sick of Yanko and Lakeo. Something about him, just rubs me wrong - mostly related to him not only not wanting to take a life, but many times not even wanting to hurt anyone. At least Amaranthe didn't have issues with knocking folks out or hurting opponents enough that they couldn't fight back anymore. And Lakeo does nothing but complain and make snide comments. I understand that it all comes from her past, but it really gets old and tiring. Personally, I think Dak, Jhali, and Snake Heart are the best characters in this series. I will try other series by this author because this is the first one where I haven't really liked the main character.
It should not really have been that big a surprise at all, Yanko being called out, not being taken seriously, often derided but never regarded as any serious mage to be scared of. So, why have a mage assassin target him for assassination? Why would Prince Zirabo place him in charge of one tough mission after another? Why would an eighteen year old boy become known as a mage on all levels of society, locally as well as with other nations? Great Chief supplies some rather interesting answers...in addition to a heck of fun and surprising adventures. Like a dragon? Oh, well. Who needs sleep anyhow. Enjoy.
The Great Chief is a fun wrap up to the adventures of Yanko and his misfit champions. I have been completely taken by Lindsey's series of books since I first discovered them. I have yet to read any of her books including those written under her pen name Ruby Lionsdrake that I have been able to put down until I have devoured the whole series. If your needing more fun and adventure in your Life I highly recommend trying out any of her books. Do start from the beginning of the series so you don't get lost.
The ending was both predictable a pleasant suprise
As Yanko proved time after time he was an honorable person and a competent leader. I thought ally enjoyed reading the story of a very young man becoming the leader of his country by proving himself as a very good young man that won the respect of his nation through performing selfless acts that made his entire population to rise up on his side and his selfless approach to life. He was able to overcome those who were acting in thier own interest rather than the common good. If only we all had leaders like Yanko!
I've been following this universe since the Emperor's Edge series and this was a delightful way to leave it. While some things were extremely obvious (who the next Great Chief will be), I didn't find it annoying, it just underlined the main character's naiveté. Overall, I wish this wouldn't have ended, but if it had to, this book did it perfectly.
Well Lindsay did it again, she wrote another great series. I love her books and this one is no exception. Yanko comes to the aid of Prince Zirabo. Yanko also battles a dragon, magic dragon that is, he walks at the head of the army wondering all the while who will be the next Great Chief. I recommend starting at the beginning of the series, you won't be sorry. Happy Reading.
A rather satisfying conclusion for the most part. I liked how everyone's story was drawn to a close and that the protagonists forces defeated the enemy. I'm not sold on Yanko as emperor, nor am I happy to see that Nuria is sticking to their foolish system of honored families while everyone else is treated like dirt. My favorites were Dak and Tynlee as well as seeing Amaranthe, Sicarius and Rias included in the end.

I am very happy after reading this book. Pirates, dragon, birds hurling insults.... Gold mining, a brave new world and the plague.....what more could you ask? Read this and enjoy, but make sure you've read the previous books so you can fully appreciate Yanko's development and his friendship with Dak so you get the most out of it.
Yanko is a most awesome character. But what makes the series special are how interesting the people and parrot around him add so much to the story. Well worth the read this series is now one of my favorites from the Emporer's edge world. Yanko , I hope we meet again with your friends.
I think I enjoyed this book (that includes the set of 1 - 4 and the prequel) more the second time. I didn't remember Amarantha and Sicarius being in these book, and they are my favorite characters in all of Lindsay's books. Very well written, well developed characters and lots of adventures (more than a person can have in one year.)
This is the last book of the Chains of Honor series and sadly also the last book of the Emperor's Edge world. This series and the rest of the Emperor's Edge world has been marvelous! It's the 10th series I finish of Lindsay Buroker and the more of her series I read of her, the more I love her writing style and the worlds she creates.
Yanko is my precious baby boy and I shall hear no slander against him. The only way to make this book even more perfect would be a series of one shots of all the adults plotting behind Yanko's back.
This series is severely underrated. There's a ton of action, great characters, hilarious banter and more. Cannot recommend this enough.
It was great reading about the growing up of Yanko. He was a great lead character with all the other players coming in a very close second. I love having characters from other series involved also. Thank you Lindsay for another great series. I am running out of books to read of yours.
I've thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Dak better in this series, and meeting Yanko & Co. The end of the series was everything I wanted it to be, and the bonus Epilogue of the Epilogue was the icing on the cake.
I have waited a really long time to finally read the end of Yahoo's story. It was worth the wait. Yanko is an endearingly loveable character and I have thoroughly enjoyed his adventures.
Loved the ending of the story...well done. I, too, hated to see the end of these characters and enjoyed the bonus epilogue to see the personal closure for our hero. I hope to see them in follow on stories as the author's time permits. Great fun, Lindsay!
Lindsay never fails to entertain! I have read everything she has written and enjoyed the stories and characters. I will continue to read her books hopefully for a long time to come.
I loved this series and I am sad to see it come to an end. The characters work well especially Yanko and his mother. I like that the relative who has always been disappointed in him is someone Yank can now feel disappointed with. I loved this world and recommend this and all the Emperor's Edge books.
What a delightful mix of adventure, mystery, intrigue and innocence. I enjoyed every book in the series, and I loved “Great Chief,” the culmination of a young man’s self discovery and personal growth.
