I found this book really helpful for an anxious beginner. Rachel writes gently, introducing topics slowly and repeating herself frequently. In fact, probably half the text is repetition. For the novice, that is comforting.
I took a lot of notes from Rachel’s book. In the process, I became familiar with my dashboard and options as a writer. It was quite helpful.
One of the challenges of designing websites is the constant change of format and options and themes. To manage questions, Rachel created a website where she posted a lot of articles. Throughout the book, she referenced articles we could read to help with questions we might have.
However, when I went to read those articles, I found the website did not exist. I searched for Rachel, found another website by her, but there was no way to contact her. Finally, I found her on Facebook and sent her a note that her website was gone. I bet she already knew that!
This was ironic, since throughout the book she emphasized the importance of maintaining a reliable, consistent blog voice online.
Bottom line? This is an affordable book that gently guides a beginner, a writer, through the web of menus on a site and gives very opinionated directions on how to begin. I appreciated it. I went on to read WordPress for Beginners 2023 by Dr. Andy Williams to actually set up my author website. Rachel’s book made it easy for me to do that, having familiarized me with a lot of the Dashboard. Dr. Andy does have current information and an active website to support it.
