Plow Hand: Who said life was fair?

Rate this book
Carly Dugan’s life took a drastic turn when her husband lost his arm in a tragic sawmill accident. Depression twisted this fun-loving, considerate man into a bitter and intolerable wreck. Their marriage is falling apart. But Julian has lost more than an arm. He’s lost his way. The old house is falling apart, yet he sits in a rocker all day, feeling like half a man. The meager savings in the sugar jar will soon be gone. When Carly gets a letter from a former neighbor inviting them to Alabama to live with her and her husband, even offering Julian a job in their feed store, Carly is sure it’s the answer to her prayers. Julian becomes ill on the trip and is in desperate need of medical attention. However, when they arrive at their destination, the woman opens the door and appears shocked to see them. She insists she never sent such a letter and turns them away. Carly is stunned. What possible motive would the woman have for pulling such a dastardly deed? Carly’s faith begins to waver. If God really loved her, would she be Going through so many trials? It wasn’t fair.

In 1896, Henry James wrote in The Spoils of Poynton that he gathered 'germs' for his novels, saying most of his writings sprung from a single seed - a floating particle in the stream of talk. I got it! I understood, because as a Southern Fiction writer, I'm a gatherer of seeds also. I was born and reared in the Deep South. I love this land. I love my people. I listen to what they say and what they leave unsaid. It's the unsaid - those tightly woven secrets - that become unraveled in my books. I've been referred to as a Southern Gothic writer, even though my novels take place in the 1930's. I hope you enjoy these romantic Southern Secrets.

This book was the first book I have read in years. Reading through it had me captivated by the way my mind kept changing the time settings. One minute it sounds like today, the next minute it sounds like the early 1900’s. The story is very heavy, moves quickly but is warm. That does not mean it cannot be harsh in parts. Brings comfort especially for those who may be struggling with feeling life is just unfair. I know that is how I felt when I picked this book out. After reading it, I was left speechless with 1,000,000 thoughts.

My favorite author

Wow, this has to be my all time favorite book. I literally could not put it down. So much real life going on in this book. I believe that the lady that Carly ran into twice was truly an angel of God. It is wonderful to read a story that shows that God is always with us, in the good times as well as the bad times.

Kay Chandler has quickly become a favorite author. I love that she writes clean, wholesome books with important spiritual truths. There is an oft-quoted saying that “life isn’t fair but God is,” and Carly experienced a lot of difficulties as she learned to trust God with her life. Once again this book was filled with a number of unexpected twists and turns.
