Leroy was never the best student at school but he was never the worst either. School was always about not standing out, not drawing attention to yourself. Especially since his father lost his job and became a migrant worker. But when his father gets relocated to the mines on Mars, Leroy discovers that nothing on Earth prepared him for a world where just the air alone can kill you.
And being different from the other kids at school? Well, let’s just say Leroy doesn’t want that. Leroy doesn’t want that at all.
By day I am a mechanical/ biomedical engineer. But that's just to pay my bills. I've always been a creative person and have been sketching since a young age. Later on I became fascinated by graphic design and taught myself to use Photoshop and Illustrator. But becoming a writer wasn't something I had considered until I had a story idea in my head and it just wouldn't go away. I didn't know when I started where this adventure would take me but it's certainly been an entertaining ride. A self-published author freebie that was really good. Set on Mars, it was horrific & very well done. Almost Bradbury-like in its ability to paint the human condition. I'll definitely keep my eye out for more by this author.
This short story was padded with too much elementary school fluff. The school was on Mars, and we got exposition by classroom. There wasn't much dialogue either. I prefer dialogue to move my story. If it wasn't for the final 30% with the Leroy/Cynthia encounter, the book would have been completely meh. That encounter should have been chapter two because the resulting events were fascinating. A missed opportunity.
