Winnie the witch decides to grow her own vegetables in this tenth picture-book devoted to her doings, sick of having to lug home tons of produce from the farmers' market every Saturday. Making a plan is easier than carrying it out however, and our witchy heroine soon discovers that gardening can be hard work! Digging up the ground, planting the seeds, watering and weeding her patch - Winnie does everything she can, but finds that she gets little reward. Plants move so slowly, and her new shoots tends to get eaten by snails and rabbits. Then Winnie thinks of her wand, and uses a little magic to help things along. Bu when her garden begins to grow with a vengeance, soon overtaking and threatening to bury her house, Winnie must act quickly to repair the damage she has done...

As always, I enjoyed this entry in author Valerie Thomas and illustrator Korky's Paul's picture-book series about a quirky witch and her appealing feline friend. I had to chuckle when Wilbur is described as 'helping' Winnie with her gardening - from the safety of a tree branch, of course! - or when he confronts such dangers as a snail (ha!), and I found the appearance of the giant rabbits and snails quiet amusing as well. As someone who, like Winnie, adores pumpkin, I identified with her desire for more of her favourite vegetable, and discovered that my mouth was watering, thinking of all the treats she made with her giant specimen. As a fairy-tale fan, I also appreciated the veiled reference to Cinderella, and the fate of the hollowed out-pumpkin left on Winnie's hands. Who wouldn't want a pumpkin helicopter? In sum, a worthy addition to an entertainingly witchy series, one that keeps the reader involved through both narrative and artwork.

I never knew that Winnie the Witch is a vegetarian but it transpires from 'Winnie's Amazing Pumpkin' that she may well be. This is because she eats lots of vegetables, 'She liked broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and parsnips. She really liked peas, carrots, beans, potatoes, and spinach. But she loved pumpkins.' No sign of any meat!

And every Saturday morning she and her adorable cat Wilbur go to market on their broomstick to buy fresh supplies of vegetables. Unfortunately on the way back, laden down with all her vegetables, occasionally some would fall off the broomstick; sprouts and tomatoes therefore would rain down on the market!

Winnie comes up with an idea to prevent this happening, 'I'll grow my own vegetables,' she says. And she plants all sorts of vegetables in her garden. The only problem she sees is that it takes time for the vegetables to grow and when they do, caterpillars, snails and rabbits all have a bite at them. So to overcome this problem she waves her magic wand shouts Abracadabra and the spell works - the vegetables grow at a rapid pace and to huge sizes.

Her gothic mansion is soon encased in vegetables, including a giant pumpkin that sits atop the house! She undoes her spell and her enormous vegetable garden returns to its former size. That is all except the pumpkin that crashes down into the garden.

Winnie chops a doorway into the pumpkin and makes a variety of pumpkin products from it. She even invites her neighbours to call and take away what they want. As a consequence, before too long the pumpkin shell is empty. Now, what can she do with the pumpkin shell?

Suffice it to say she comes up with an ingenious way of using it and it solves her problem with carrying vegetables back from the market!

In this edition Winnie even provides a pumpkin soup recipe but she does warn 'You will also need an adult to help you' - I'm sure I will!!

The Winnie and Wilbur books, with those glorious Korky Paul illustrations, really are great fun and can be read, laughed at and generally enjoyed time and again.

„Timelines”. I read this book aloud in Spanish and everyone loved the story of Winnie the Witch and her fixation with pumpkins. It's a perfect story for Halloween.

Another nice story for Halloween, and good for kids to learn about different types of vegetables.

When Winnie the Witch decides to grow vegetables in her garden, she gets more than she bargained for - giant beanstalks, colossal cabbages, and an enormous pumpkin perched on her roof! But what can Winnie do with her huge pumpkin when only the shell is left? Prepared to be amazed!

Wow. This is how a children's book should be.
The story is interesting, logical, and well built up. It introduces a feature, shows what problem it causes, the hero wants to solve this problem, fails badly but funnily and tries to make the best out of it - and accidentally, using her wit, finds a solution to the problem.
THANKS!!!!

This book tells the story of a witch that loves vegetables, especially pumpkins. To solve the problem of her vegetables falling off her broom she decides to grow her own vegetables at home but as they are taking too long she casts a spell on the plants and they grow to an enormous size!

I enjoyed this book as it contained a lot of teaching points: eating healthily, growing plants, sharing and a surprise ending. Also on the last page of the copy I have there is a recipe to make Winnie's Pumkin Soup. This would be an ideal book to use with children from reception to year two and you could use the book in a variety of subjects.

I will be buying my own copy of this for use in my future classroom!

Winnie's into veges, farmer's markets and in particular - pumpkins!

This is a fun romp through Winnie's garden, which after a little Abracadabra has '..a giant beanstalk ... cabbages as big as cows.... rabbits bigger than cows ...' and an enormous pumpkin on the roof.

So, what do you do with over-sized garden produce that you can't eat yourself?

You share it of course.

So, what do you do with the shell of said over-sized produce?

Convert it - of course (but not into what you might guess!)

Side note: Front and Endpapers were done by Amber Parker (7) and Maggie Thomas (7)

These children's books are fab. I read 5 of them to my nephew and niece as goodnight stories whilst on holiday and they loved both the stories and the illustrations. This one is my favourite as it involves gardening!!! Need to start sowing my pumpkin seeds......

Me encanta leer estos libros a la niña antes de dormir. Son muy graciosos y la pobre Winnie siempre se mete en líos de los que trata de salir con magia.
