Wow! What a change from the normal Lei Crime series.

It was exciting, adventurous, and (at times) terrifying!

Rumor has it that there is only one book left in this series.

I received an advance reader copy of Red Rain by Toby Neal in return for an honest review. Red Rain is a sequel to her previous Lei Crime Series #10, Bone Hook, a cliffhanger—and what a cliffhanger it is! Fortunately, I finished reading Bone Hook the week before I received Red Rain, so I didn’t have to wait too long for the resolution! Red Rain is a well-written, fast-paced mystery that keeps the reader on the edge of his seat with quite a number of twists and turns along the way, with the final resolution coming at the very end. A true page-turner—that had me fooled!

Red Rain weaves together two suspenseful storylines: that of Lei Texeira and that of her husband, Michael Stevens. Lei is assigned to work a child homicide cold-case while Michael is off to some unknown location to help train friendly operatives. Both are forced to deal with many physical and mental challenges.

Red Rain departs from many of Neal’s books in that we are now inside Michael Stevens’s head. We are allowed to get into his inmost thoughts, feelings and emotions. This is a stroke of genius, coming from a woman writer, especially since her stories are told mostly from Lei’s perspective. Red Rain can be read as a stand-alone book, but be sure to read Bone Hook first. You’ll be glad that you did! I will be reading this book again—there is so much excellent character exploration and development that I want to experience it again! Kudos, Toby, on another well-written mystery!

Wow, I had just finished Bone Hook and had to buy this one right away to resolve the cliffhanger. For me, this was the best one yet, although I think I said that for Bone Hook as well. They just keep getting better and better. Michael in the first person felt a bit odd for me but I suppose it made sense to be able to follow who was who as the stories switched from Lei to Michael. I thought it was very clever how the stories had similarities as they ran in parallel. Excellent character development for Lei, assuming more of a maturity and finding her motherly instinct. Loved it and could not put it down.

Another 5 stars for Toby Neal. I wanted so badly to peek ahead and find out what was going to happen (but I didn't). Red Rain is a page turner for sure and had an ending that I never saw coming. I am so excited to see that the series is going to continue, I have come to feel like Lei & Stevens are my family. I hold my breath when they are in trouble and pray when they are in serious danger, laugh, cry, the whole range of emotions. Highly recommend this series to anyone who like a mystery with a little romance tossed in. Each book is better than the last if that is even possible!

This was a good follow-on from the previous volume which, spoiler a bit, was a cliff-hanger for one of the threads. I thought this and the previous volume together worked well.

Another Winner from Toby Neal

Now wild ginger lined the narrow dirt track, leaning in with heavy, fragrant bouquets of silky orange flowers and long, sword-like leaves.

Red Rain is installment 11 from Toby Neal in her Lei Crime Series. I want to review but as in many crime and police procedurals, it's not a good Whodunit if the readers reveal how and who dunnit!

So for us already Lei hardcore fans, Lei is hard at work doing the job she loves, while she balances (not always well!) her love of Michael, family, law enforcement, the pursuit of what's right on her beloved Islands.

Each book, including the companion books, have the ability to stand alone, but really!! Start at the beginning and read them all. Each book is strong in vivid and historical Hawaiian imagery - with well-developed, yet human characters. Each book has a distinct storyline and case which always surprises, thrills, entertains and intrigues me.

I love Toby Neal and understand, she needs more in life than to write, but Red Rain was released yesterday, and I am already stomping my feet and demanding the next installment.

I support this talented and interactive Indie author-ess (forgive me. I think I just made that word up.) I love her. I love her writing. I love this series. I love these books.

Sit down and relax with a great read and enjoy the calm, surge, and ginger lined tracks with Neal's devoted fans.

I'm a Lei Crime Series fan and couldn't wait to read this after my download from BookBub. What a switch-a-roo! Michael is in first person! I've read most all of this series and love the spicy flavor of the islands, the education into the island patois, traditions, flora and fauna. Each story can be stand alone, but Lei has really grown and progressed, thanks to Ms Neal; made real. Love all the characters from her partner, Pono, to her captain, Omura. This one splits the plot following two story lines. Easy to follow, no prob, but works to building a twist you won't see coming. Too special to spoil the fun, you'll just have to read it yourself to get the real skinny of what happens to Mike. And Lei--can she ever do a case that starts simple (including a cold case) without discovering a major work in progress that requires the special passion and dedication she brings to her job in the police force of Maui. Fast and furious and over way too soon. This has to be the best one yet! Bring on #12 Ms. Neal--we're waiting! (And DON'T tell me it's the last in the series!)

I’ve really enjoyed every book in this series. This is one of the best ones. It is both a mystery and a thriller, a hard combination to pull off in one book, and both stories had me on the edge of my seat from the start.

While Lei investigates the origin of a child’s skull found on a beach, Stevens struggles to survive in a Central American jungle after escaping from kidnappers.

This book is written from both Lei’s and Stevens’s POV, but Steven’s is in first person, making the reader (this reader, at least) feel much closer to him.

As in earlier books, Neal has a good balance between the characters’ private and police lives, making them seem even more real. She’s done a great job evolving Lei from the distrustful, isolated loner she was in the first books to the loving, caring wife and mother she is here.

Neal leaves one plotline only semi-resolved at the end. Perhaps she’ll resolve it in the next book.

Yes, there is another book coming in this series and, as I hoped when I finished the earlier ones, it isn’t the last one.

This entry in the Lei Crime Series is like no other. Two tales are told simultaneously in this book, as Lei gets a simple cold case that turns into anything but simple, but in dealing with all the issues involved, you begin to feel that she is growing up and becoming a more grounded stable human who realizes she can't (or shouldn't) jump into things feet first and deal with the consequences later. She now knows she has a family she has to put first. Meanwhile, Stevens is kidnapped in the jungles of Honduras and must figure out how to survive. The experience helps him put to rest some of the demons that have been plaguing him, but if you want to know more, you will need to read this very exciting installment. Some things are not as they seem, and then some answers are yet to come. You will have a hard time putting this one down, trust me.

Loved it!

Wow...another new favorite! I am not tired of this series yet and now I have come to the point where I have to wait for the next book to be released! :( This book is a lot different than the previous ones. Michael Stevens had already taken a greater role, which I liked, but in this book he is the star. Told in first person, we learn of Michael's extraordinary experiences in Central America where he has accepted a mission he hopes will help him heal and get rid of his demons. I'm not going to spoil anything, but I couldn't put it down and the ending was well worth all the frantic reading. Now I hope to read something not quite so "unputdownable" while I wait for Book 12 to come out.

Another great book by Toby Neal revolving around Lei's husband Michael trying to deal with his past and secondly regarding a child's skull found in a river leading to a major case. Quite a surprising twist at the end. Another book that you can't put down until you finishing reading it. Loved it!!

Could not stop reading this book.

I could not stop reading this book and it left me wanting more. I love Toby Neal's style of writing. When I read her first book there were others that had already been published now I have to wait for the new ones and it's tough. I like that this one was written from both Lei's and LT's first person.

Great follow up to BONE HOOK

Fast moving, exciting leaves you looking for more.
A cliff hanger. Can't wait to see if or when the next 2books come out - Follow up of FBI side of story, and continuation of the Lei and Michael saga.

This is definitely Toby’s most intense, grittiest writing to date. We get deep into Stevens’s viewpoint as he is held prisoner …somewhere in South America. The ending totally took me by surprise. Bravo, Toby, for this masterpiece! (Can’t wait for the next book!)

Okay, I'm hooked. Toby Neal has a world of strong women characters, and Red Rain is the 11th book in the series about Lei (Leilani) Texiera. I've spent the better part of a week tearing through the series. Hooked like a fish. There are two things that elevate this series above a lot of others (and maybe a third, now that I think on it.)

First, Neal has created a fine cast of characters in a delightful setting that has its own delightful settings. She finds sections of the various islands away from the main stream ones we've been to. Next, her characters grow. Texiera is a badass cop but with some screwy internal wiring. A good part of the journey from the first book to this one has been both her career in law enforcement with it's ups and downs, as well as her work to conquer her internal demons. All of her main characters are flawed in some way, and their movement to new plateaus is generally free of stereotypes.

Red Rain finds her dealing with life without her husband, Michael Stevens, who accepted a secuirty assignment overseas as a way of kicking his drinking as well as overcoming his demons. The story splits between them as he's kidnapped and appears to go through hell. She is busy with a case arising from a young child's skull discovered at a shoreline. Her boss knows her well and keeps her from running after her husband, which is just as well because she has enough to handle at home.

I'm not sure that someone who hasn't read the earlier books would like this, simply because so many story arcs are a continuation of previous writing. That's the potential problem of all series. Of course, the other side of it is that it might spur more readers back to the beginnings. It would certainly be worth it, in my view.

Kindle Unlimited
Red Rain is #11 of the current 16 of the Paradise Crime Mysteries by Toby Neal. The listings on these novels at Amazon Kindle is very confusing - The Wired Series by Ms. Neal is also listed as Paradise Crime books, and they are in this well-defined Hawaiian paradise also, but feature other characters whom we are familiar with. If it has wired in the title it belongs to that other series. I have purchased a couple accidentally now but don't want to start that series until I finish this one. I adore this author; she brings the islands and people to life, but I like to read a series in order until it is completed. Wired will be next for me when I finish Lei and Stevens.
And Red Rain is a fast-paced whirl into the world of our protagonists. Stevens is on his mission, location unknown. Lei is frantically busy with life in general and her work with the Maui Police Department following up on the skull of a ten or eleven-year-old child found in a mountainous drainage below a drug-producing community which gets her involved with abused kids and Child Protective Services and all that that entails. And then she is informed that Stevens and his co-workers at that unknown training mission are being held hostage by unknown factions. The action is frantic, the folks are like friends, and the twist in this one is another I never saw coming. Happy reading! I think you are gonna like this one.

I can’t believe the Lei crime series is wrapping up! I’m sad to see her go but know that she lives on in my Kindle! This wasn’t my favorite of the stories. Michael Stevens is in the thick jungle of Honduras with Security Solutions, an army outfit that he’s chosen to get sober after finally realizing his alcoholism is endangering his marriage. After getting captured, Michael - sick and delirious- busts out with his fellow captors and heads into the unknown territory of the jungle.

The book goes back and forth between Lei busting a huge marijuana grow operation in Hana and Michael’s journey to freedom. I was particularly disheartened to learn that after all the time I spent in the jungle with Michael, it was basically all a dream. He had been placed into a coma and had a very lucid, vivid dream about his escape, and when he wakes in the psych ward on Oahu he realizes none of it ever happened. That wasn’t a strong ending for me. Also, while I love Stevens and Lei together, for some reason I didn’t like being inside his head. I don’t feel like we’ve gotten to know him personally well enough to follow his every move like we do Lei.

Oh, and I should mention - I loved the end of this book. Upon waking in the psych unit, Lei tells Stevens he must get better soon - there’s a baby on the way!

I’m excited to see what’s in store in Bitter Feast!

Red Rain - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Can it be true? Are we already at Book 11 of the Paradise Crime Mystery series by the amazing Toby Neal!?!! Slipping between the tropical Hawaiian pages of Red Rain, is like coming home after a hard day and easing your aching limbs in a nice warm bath - comforting and enjoyable, until you notice the crocodile that's been lingering just out of sight, waiting for you to relax - before pouncing!

Luckily there are no nasty shocks, just thrills aplenty as our feisty heroine Lei Texeira of Hawaii PD, who's dedicated to healing herself, (from physical and psychological traumas in her past) and with what seems to be a fairly mundane cold-case murder to have a quick look into, before she goes on maternity leave. Meanwhile her husband Michael Stevens is overseas, (and in plenty of trouble, having been kidnapped by terrorists from a lecture he was giving).

Of course nothing runs smoothly after that, as one might expect, but you'll have to get yourself a copy to find out how things work out for our parents-to-be and their 'impending' addition to the family - don't wait too long!

This book picks up right where we left off book 10. Stevens has been captured in the remote jungles of Central America struggling to survive and get back to his family. Toby does an exceptional job as we hear from Michael Stevens and his inner turmoil as he fights his demons. Lei is beside herself with worry and fear for Stevens but manages to stay put and be the rock for their son Kiet. Which for our lovely heroine is a very difficult thing to do so it just goes to show how much she’s grown over the course of the series. She’s built relationships and friendships which has allowed her to trust and love people. She’s grown into her role as a mother and cast aside the fears of failure she clung to. The twist at the end was completely unexpected but well done. The characters have become beloved friends whom you wish only the best for. I hope Lei and Michael continue to whisper inspiration as I’d hate to see them go. This book was thrilling, action packed, and suspenseful.

Review of this book.

So many good books. You are an exceptional author. Your stories flow seamlessly. Your stories read like true life adventures. Reading your books is like following murder stories in real life. The best part is being able to follow it to the end. My thoughts are probably not put into the words that are protocol for reviewing books, but they are sincere. Keep up the good work. I promise that I will read your biography to see what inspired you to start writing. I have thought about writing my own story, which is not pretty. Maybe I will put notes together and look into writing it. I grew up in foster care so I can relate to Lei. My last foster family was wonderful. I wish that I could have stayed with them forever. You are a wonderful writer. Keep up the good work.

Edge of your seat suspense!

This was the most twisted, thrilling, and jam packed with action of all 11 books. It was almost heart stopping. The emotions also ran up and down the scales in a fever pitch.

Lei has grown as a woman and is more emotionally stable as motherhood takes over. Michael has reached a new low emotionally and mentally as he battles PTSD and alcoholism. They both battle their demons in their own way and for awhile it looked as if they might lose; Michael in a jungle, trying to escape kidnappers half a world away from his family, and Lei fleeing murderous pot growers.

And the plot has more twists than one can imagine. Wonderful, fabulous book!!!

However, they manage to come out of it even more committed to one another.

I bought this in a box set of 10, 11 and 12. And I have to tell you I think this was the best one yet. I don't know how Toby Neal does it. She just keeps them coming better and better. Lei and Stevens...I love them so much. In this one Stevens goes to a central American country to work for Security Solutions and Lei is given a cold case involving a skull reportedly from a young male. There is so much excitement, danger, twists and turns I know I'm going to have trouble sleeping tonight. Actually I'm probably going to read the next one Bitter Feast and stay up all night. And as of today this box set is only $9.99

Red Rain was nonstop action. It picks up where Bone Hook left off. The story alternates between Lei (in third person) and Michael (in first person). Michael has been kidnapped and is held for ransom in Honduras. Lei wants to search but obeys when she is told to stay put by the military and her boss. She is given a seemingly simple case. A child's skull is found and what appears to be a cold case turns hot quickly. Both storylines are thrilling and filled with danger.

This is a series I have consistently enjoyed though it has been a couple years since I've last read it. Unfortunately, I struggled with this installment - I really didn't like the back and forth story lines between Lei and Steven. It wasn't done smoothly and I found it a little confusing at times. And then the "revelation" at the end regarding Steven's experience in Honduras really irritated me. I will probably continue the series, since this format of two story lines has not really been the norm for past books.
