It was supposed to be fun. They are both experienced in the club singles' lifestyle, but from the moment Connor and Laurel meet, sparks fly, heat spikes, and everything suddenly gets complicated.
Laurel wants something long term with Connor and is determined to get it, even if it means having to push him out of his comfort zone. Little does she realize just how close she is to pushing him over the edge.
When Connor pushes back, everything becomes twisted and distorted until they both end up facing their own dark consequences. Can they find their way back, or will the secrets of Connor's past destroy them both?
Publisher's Book four of the Club Risqué series is a steamy, dark, sensual story which includes themes of power exchange.
As I said in my review of the previous Club Risque books, nice guys in one book become jerks in the next, and Connor does this, though halfway through the book we find out it's because . And he does seem immediately regretful and works to help Laurel get through her own mental health issues. While it's not exactly the most realistic version of dealing with mental health issues, the characters are interesting and their relationship is ultimately fulfilling for both of them.
I loved this book. I can’t think of any other book – kinky or vanilla – I’ve read in the last few years that has gripped me as much as this one did. I have spent the last few days getting increasingly frustrated with things like work and family and sleeping getting in the way of my erotica reading time.
I was utterly invested in the two primary characters – sexy Dom Connor Griffin and feisty sub Laurel Stanton – from the start. Although, a lot of the time, I wanted to bang their heads together and tell the pair of them to bloody well communicate properly with one another.
Dark Consequences isn’t a particularly comfortable read. When we are introduced to Laurel and Connor at the beginning of the book, it is clear that whatever the relationship they previously had, it has failed and they are both at very unhappy places in their lives.
The majority of the book is focused on the events leading up to the prologue. Which means that we, the reader, already know that the fun sexy relationship that blossoms between the two characters isn’t going to remain that way forever. A large chunk of the book is spent watching the slow deterioration of a relationship. It’s a relief when the story finally gets to the point at which it started. Things can only go up from there.
One of the things I really admired about this book was how seriously it took the subject of mental health problems. I have a personal interest in this subject. I have lost count of the number of times I’ve read a book’s heroine being able to overcome all manner of serious mental illnesses – clinical depression, trauma, nervous breakdowns, you name it, simply with the love and discipline of a good Dom. It’s the kinky equivalent of being told to pull your socks up. Poppy Flynn certainly doesn’t do this. The fact that in this book, one of the primary factors in overcoming depression involves taking their prescribed medication is actually quite a refreshing change.
I realise that I am making this book sound as though it is No Fun At All. This couldn’t be further from the truth. It is, after all, a book which is pretty much wall-to-wall sexy BDSM shenanigans. Laurel’s kinky outfits were alone enough to make me drool. And the scenes that the characters play out together – and they do a LOT of scenes believe me – are a delight to read. And I can’t begin to describe how much I would love to have an establishment like Club Risqué in my home town. I was very jealous of Laurel who could just pop down there after work multiple times a week.
This book is the fourth instalment in the Club Risqué series. I haven’t read any of the previous books in this series but this certainly wasn’t a problem. There is a large cast of characters however whose stories are barely touched upon. These are obviously the protagonists of the other books in the series. Their stories appear to be happening concurrently with Connor and Laurel’s so I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series and seeing how Poppy Flynn blends the stories together.
I hope that the rest of the Club Risqué books are even half as good as this one. Having been desperate to get to the end of Dark Consequences to see how it all ends up, I now feel a bit bereft now that I’ve finished it.
Dark Consequences is part of an ongoing BDSM club series, but each book also stands pretty well on its own. The club is the connection, but each book is about a separate set of characters, most of whom are owners or work for the company that owns the club. I’ve enjoyed all of them because each has a different flavor and I like the way all the arcs end up matching together.
This new edition has a slightly different tone to it, and I had a lot of trouble liking the male lead in the beginning. There was definitely chemistry between the characters but also a lot of really dumb relationship mistakes at times I wanted to smack both of them—but their story pulls you in and I got really invested in following it until the end. I’m glad I did because it does wrap up with a beautiful HEA.
This book takes place in a different club called Perversions and Conner is interested in seeing if it’s worth using it to expand Club Risqué. Both of these clubs are more ‘fantasy’ clubs than anything that actually exists in the scene. If you’re looking for realism you might be annoyed, and I wouldn’t want anyone walking away thinking that these are the norm for a rl bdsm club—but I love them because they are the kind of place that doesn’t exist but would be really fun to visit if they did.
Like a lot of fantasy club books, it focuses on sexual domination and the sex scenes are as hot as the bdsm scenes. If you’re looking for a steamy read you’ll love this whole series.
Some major plot spoilers: What really rings true is the way that Laurel falls apart when things don’t work out between them. The way she descends into self-destructive behaviors and has trouble ‘feeling’ anything is what I’ve seen many subs go through after a rough break-up with their Dominant. I went from being frustrated at her to feeling so much sympathy for what she was going through.
Conner’s baggage causes him to make some really cringe-worth mistakes in this, not that she’s entirely blameless either, but I struggled to like him for a lot of the book. The ending really made it all worth it for me. Seeing him take the steps he needed to get healthy, seeing her step away to recover on her own so that they could both reunite later when they were healthy was so perfect.
My first experience of reading one of Poppy Flynn's books, was book number 3 in this Club Risque series, Ties That Bind. When I saw this book available, I knew I had to read about Connor and Laurel's story. She did not disappoint! I just finished and I know I'll be thinking about this book for awhile.
The characters came to life. I felt as if I was experiencing everything (well, not everything!) right along with them. I loved them both, even though they sometimes couldn't get out of their own way. This is really intense and not just some roses and kisses kind of story. I thoroughly enjoyed the book though.
How to explain without giving anything away? Read the warnings at the beginning, to make sure reading this book won't trigger anything for you and if that doesn't chase you away, then dig in!
This explorers the kink lifestyle and this pair may have finally met their match, in each other. It's left me wanting to read the rest of the series, especially Micah's story. Happy reading!

What a emotional book, it’s highs were great and the lows sorrowful. This book had me on an emotional roller coaster and I loved it. The best HEA I have read in a long time
This deals with some tough issues. I know Conner was suffering from something tragic at the beginng but he really was a jerk first class. Hard to like him. Again had to suffer through all the information and drama from the last 3 books again. Making the book drag out. Darn just say you can’t read the books separate and stop the repetition
And personally, I didn't find it worth it because:
1) I didn't like Laurel, the female lead. She started out great, all spirited, confident and fun, but then she became dishonest, manipulative and started gas-lighting the male lead for her own agenda, completely uncaring of his feelings and autonomy.
2) I didn't like Conner, the male lead. He spent way too much time justifying his selfishness and hiding behind the label 'dominant' even before he started to . Then afterward, he continued to be arrogant and full of himself. Quote:
3)
4)
5)
6) The love part of the story was a complete fail. That's not romantic or sexy or a satisfying conclusion to a love story; it's icky on every level.
7) In any other book, the female lead would have been the antagonist given her gas-lighting of the male lead; here she was just an example of a woman who thought she didn't deserve to be loved for herself so she
And that was terrible, terrible messaging and why the story got one star instead of two.
The story is the fourth in the Club Risque series but could read well enough as a stand-alone. It does have many key people that are in the previous two books. The story is a roller-coaster ride of emotions and truths, assumptions, poor communication, hurt feelings, new beginnings, and trying to bury the past. It is also the on and off situation between Connor Griffin and Laurel Stanton—two people who click well, but the past interferes with the present and is nearly the destruction of each of them.
I will have to say that this wasn’t an easy story to read with all the angst, hurt feelings, physical and mental-emotional roller coaster rides and the demons haunting them. The story will also go back to when Joel and Desi marry and leave for their honeymoon. The issues between Connor and Laurel will escalate until things said and done, and lack of proper communication causes such a riff that leads to breakdowns.
“Don’t wait around trying to be somebody’s perfect. Either you’re right for them as you are, or you’re not. Be yourself; if that’s not good enough for them, then at least let it be good enough for you. No matter what you feel, yourself, you can’t change somebody else’s feelings for you—well, you can make them hate you, but you can’t make them love you.”
Connor is a player, yet he and Laurel, aka Fluff, have been unofficially exclusive but without any contract, verbal agreement, or commitment with a D/s relationship. He even comes over for meals at least once a week and spends many nights with her. The fact that they are developing feelings of love has him scared, and that will be one of the catalysts for his cruel behavior. The second will be a failure in an important message getting to her—she doesn’t know he is one of the club owners and with obligations to clients—leading to a personal disaster between them.
“It’s made me feel cheap and –used and—dirty. In all my years in this lifestyle, even around people who didn’t understand or were critical, I never felt dirty before.” –Laurel
“As co-owner of Club Risque, the consequences would be even less since he hadn’t overstepped any boundaries there—pushed them a little bit more than a Dom in his position should have, certainly. But he’d broken no promises, promised no assurances, and assured no repercussions. Not in the sense of the lifestyle, anyway. There were repercussions all right, but none that he had expected. It was true that they had become a bit of an item, unofficially, of course. He’d purposely never taken any steps to enter into any kind of contract or an official D/s relationship with her. She was an experienced sub. She knew the score. She knew there had never been any promises—nothing even close. Hindsight was always 20/20.”
The plot will start at present and then back up to the D/s relationship that Connor and Laurel play, along with working together at Blackwood Universal Holdings. While they have scened together for a year when he is in town, there is no commitment, it is always assumed—and that finally blows up on them. Back to present day, seeing Laurel after more than six months and she is a shell of what she had been, sceneing with Master X, a known sadist, is more than Connor can handle. It is time to be open and honest and stop letting the demons of his youth dictate his happiness. But what will it take to get Laurel to listen to him—will Xavier be agreeable to turning her back over to him? Can he help bring the bubbly Laurel back to life? Will she hate him when she learns the truth of his past, or will she understand and forgive him?
“Conner felt that the information was the final thing that Laurel needed to complete her healing and make her whole. And, for his own part, Connor believed that it was time for him, too, to tell the story of his past indignity to someone other than his therapist. If there was anyone who deserved to know, then it was Laurel.”
The story does have explicit sex scenes, scenes inside of Club Risque, voyeurism and power exchange. It strongly supports the D/s relationship, the trust required between a dominant and submissive, and everything being safe, sane, and consensual. It also shows the importance of being honest and open in a relationship and when being exclusive, how a contract makes a difference for both parties.
I struggled with deciding on a rating for this, and, in some ways, this review/rating will reflect all four books, including Fool's Desire, Ties That Bind, and Fear's Whisper, because what I have to say really applies to all of them.
Likes:
1) Consent, consent, consent! I can't say that enough. I've read far too many "dark" books that confuse non-consent with hotness, when it's really just abuse. The acts in all these books are mutually-satisfying kinks between consenting adults.
2) Ms. Flynn has done her homework and, unlike many of these authors who've written as though they've never been in a BDSM scene in their lives, she actually knows what she's talking about (or at least gives a good impression).
3) The writing is professional; the sentences varied; there are few editing errors; the characters are fairly well-rounded with interesting backstories and all exhibit growth.
4) This particular book had an unusual and, therefore, interesting plot in that it dives deeply into what happens when a dom/sub relationship goes wrong. This was a refreshing change from the usual plotlines in this genre, which usually involve some external danger to the sub that allows the dom to physically rescue her (note to authors: please try something new).
Dislikes:
1) All four men in these books are, quite frankly, jerks who make serious mistakes that cost them their lovers' trust, don't make up for them, and don't deserve the women they end up with. Because this happens -- to varying degrees -- in all four novels, I have to say that while I do like Ms. Flynn's female characters, I have a hard time with the males. While we do get a thorough explanation for Connor's actions, his past doesn't really excuse what he does in the present.
2) The author tends to concentrate too much on certain plot points and not enough on others, and the endings tend to be abrupt. For example, in this book, we hear about Connor and Laurel's angst over and over again, but get much less of their lives at the end. This was especially true in Fear's Whisper where entire scenes of how the two characters reconciled were omitted.
3) I felt the club was very negligent in taking care of Laurel
I would recommend all these books, including this one, with the above disclaimers. I do warn everyone that this book really isn't light, BDSM games: large portions of it are very emotional and difficult to read. 3 1/2 stars.
'Dark Consequences' is the fourth book in Poppy Flynn's "Club Risqué" series and be warned, there are dark consequences in this book. There could also be a few trigger points for any that have them. These two are the epitome of living the singles lifestyle within the BDSM community. Laurel, aka Fluff, has been a member of Perversions, the local BDSM club for five years. Vibrant, vivacious, and a bit of a brat in her submissiveness, she likes to top from the bottom but at the same time believes everything is an experience to either treasure or learn from. On the other hand, Connor alludes to something in his past that has caused him the need to be in complete control of every part of his life. Not to say he's stodgy, because he's a very conscientious, caring, and responsible Dom within the BDSM world and for the most part has a great sense of humor. This storyline is the perfect example of never judging a book by its cover. As seasoned and experienced as these two players are, there is an instant, almost overwhelming chemistry that sizzles, pops, and bursts with fireworks every time they get together. They are unofficially exclusive both as play and social partners, including Laurel cooking for Connor or Connor staying overnight at Laurel's home. There's no acknowledgment from either of them that this exclusivity exists. Connor is determined to remain single until it can no longer be ignored and determined to take a socialite in name only with IVF being used for an heir. Laurel, on the other hand, has fallen in love with Connor and is determined to make him see how good they are together so she continues to nudge and push. Instead of communicating with each other, they talk around the issue and gloss things over which starts to crack both of their psyches. Instead of dealing with what's going on the situation snowballs until each is faced with the dark consequences of their actions, which could cost them both. This one was a hard one for me to read but the romantic in me wanted my happy ending and Ms. Flynn certainly delivered that in spades.
A complex D/s read with a past hurt haunting this man she was trying to love…. Connor and Laurel had started to play at Club Risqué as a D/s relationship and even though they had spent nearly a year together it became apparent that there was something in his past that was holding him apart from their relationship she had been trying to build with him. Even though he tried keeping his past trauma and subsequent past memories and the insecurities he felt he decided to lay all of these at her feet and in doing so he quite definitely made it apparent that he was no longer interested in their relationship. Without even realizing it was that she started to push him over the edge and whilst he had started to work alongside him he had the called her working ethics and her actual work she had realised it was essential that she leave him to his own devices as it was apparent he was reeling and that she was an easy target for his paranoia and also his bad temper. As things become more twisted it causes the relationship to break down and this in turn causes them to break apart and this in turn causes them to and their working relationship to totally break down and this then seemed to be affecting their working relationship, it seems as though everything is going up in flames. With this their lives seen to fall apart and it soon becomes apparent they are hurting but will the damage be totally irreparable, will they ever be able to pull the themselves back together again. I voluntarily received and review an Advanced Reader Copy I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing.
This was very heavy on mental health of both main characters... I really enjoy the story alot but this series has pretty much 3 stories happening at the same time with each story slowly ending slightly farther along the timeline. That leads to lots of repeated parts from other stories. I think it might have appealed better if the 4 stories were in a single book and you as a reader just kept up with each characters romantic interactions... of course I have read all 4 and I liked them all I just didn't like the repetitive way it covered the same time for 3 of the couples... there were also small bits that kinda niggles me, it would have been nice for him to introduce his father to her much how Desi in the first story met her father in law... he is mentioned but it just gets left as a loose end I wish it was in an epilogue. The story was very good if I read it alone and maybe even first or second. But there were several sections that are in previous books which creates less interest in the story and more anticipating of events you know are about to happen... the second book was very good because it started after the first book ended no major overlapping... this book starts that way, but then the first chapter is from the past...I think the 2nd,3rd, and 4th could have been one novel with the three stories together.
★ Destruction and wreckage ensues, full of moments and actions to regret ★
—>>> Connor and Laurel had relationship which was just on the cusp of becoming something with potential, even though Connor was a self-professed single Dom intending to remain that way. That is when everything slowly begins to shatter, and their relationship spirals downward into a very dark place, especially for Laurel.
I profess very mixed emotions for this Dom and Sub, who really crosses the line, I feel in his treatment of Laurel, and she also just reacts and does not take stock of her reality. Both are very hot-headed and take it out on each other. While together in the beginning though, their relationship was full of chemistry, but this soon sours as Connor dishes out the blame on her and names her the trigger for him not being able to control the events which darkened his past.
Destruction and wreckage ensues, full of moments and actions to regret. Nevertheless, it was a gripping story, and these two characters have a difficult road to travel back to the people they want to be.
Too much inner dialogue n thoughts, seriously do I constantly need to read 5 to 8 pages of the mcs thoughts?
Repeating whole chapters from the previous books with a few minor adjustments is lazy and boring!!!
I really liked these two characters in previous books, sadly in their own theyre both horrid
Laurel is a cling on, manipulative, desperate sad woman who allows herself to be used as a fuck hole whilst deluding herself the man wants more. I really detest women like this. Who change themselves into something they think will help them capture their man them moan when it all goes wrong.
Connor is a prick, talk about sending confusing signals, he leaves clothes and has a toothbrush at her apt and doesn't expect her to think theyre more than fuck buddies.
Seriously two horrid characters, my least fav of the books.
End of the road for this series. The writing style isn't for me
This is one of the stories about Club Risque, and features Laurel and Connor. Connor is a dom with major baggage, and is not a very likable person. Laurel has set her sights on Connor from their first meeting, and Connor feels a connection with her too, but continues to deny it to himself, and tries to keep Laurel at a distance. She is the epitome of the girl pretending to be someone she isn't until she can snag her man. Neither one is very successful at playing their games, and both get hurt in the process. But the story is well told, the characters are given a lot of depth, and the reader is quickly involved in the characters' lives. And if you have read any of the other Club Risque stories then you are pleased to see characters from the other books pop up from time to time.

This is the second book that I've read in the series. I wasn't really a big fan of Conner and Laurel after reading the third book. They seemed a little high drama. Once I dug in and got a little more of the story behind the drama they became a much more interesting pair. Conner is definitely not a character I would refer to as likeable, at least not initially, but I did really like his intensity. I just felt bad for Laurel, she was so desperate for Conner's acceptance. This was a pretty long book not to have a lot of outside drama, yet it flowed really well. The intensity of the relationship made it a book that was tough to put down. The author definitely has me hooked on this series.
I must admit when I first started reading this book I wondered what was going on and it took me some time to understand the relationship between Connor and Laurel. I think it would have benefited me if I had read the previous Club Risque books before this one to get a feel of it. I have now purchased them and will re-read this in order. As it is once I finally got into the story it was very hard to put down. The relationship between Connor and Laurel was quite sad in some respects as she really wanted a relationship with him. She did seem like a ship without a rudder at times and Connor was not the nicest of men. I did find the story very emotional and ended up enjoying it very much.

Laurel is a finance manager at a big company – Connor is a senior executive and part owner of a BDSM club. They meet and an affair starts involving some spankings etc., but he has serious problems from his past and it gradually begins to destroy the relationship that they have – and almost destroys both of them in the process. The book takes many twists and turns as it all gets sorted out – but Connor is one of the least attractive doms in the stories I have read. His problems, his terrible behavior, and his blindness to the feelings of Laurel make it hard to take – even if he does redeem himself in the end.
I love this authors work. Well written, steamy, every tale has they held my interest from beginning to end. Dark Consequences, book 4, is in my opinion, her best book in the series so far. Each book can be read as a standalone but I recommend reading from book one to get full enjoyment of the characters interactions.
Connor and Laurel held my interest from the get go, these are in depth characters, their actions and motives are well described and believable. This couple have real chemistry - I enjoyed the passionate intimate BDSM scenes. I loved all the twists and turns in this tale and part of the end chapter made me cry in a good way!
I'm loving this series! I have yet to read a book in this series that I haven't wholeheartedly enjoyed! This, like the others runs in a parallel time to the other books, meaning that they can all be read as standalone. While there is some common events & sharing of characters, each book is very firmly focused on the 2 main from that read. In this case, it's Laurel & Connor, who have become familiar from the other books so I was really pleased to be able to get their story. And what a story! This book had emotion by the bucketful & dealt with some pretty unfluffy feelings & situations. Hope there is more to come in this series.
Although this is book 4 in the series it can also be read as a standalone book, there is a underlying theme connecting all the books in the series but each book concentrates on a different couple. Laurel and Connor are the focus of this story. They are having a D/s relationship at the club, but things are not going the way Laurel wants them to. Connor has major baggage that is causing an issue with his relationship with Laurel. There is drama, BDSM, heartache and twists and turns in this plot. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is book four of the Club Risque series. You do need to have read the three previous books to understand this one.
Laurell and Connor have imploded and they are trying desperately to find themselves again. This is a real tearjerker and definitely more intense than any of the previous books. I was very satisfied with the HEA, but I will say it was an abrupt ending. I hope there is another book to tie up all the loose ends.
Compelling and provocative, are two words I’d use to describe this book, as well as kinky, snarky and dark. These two people go through emotional and sometimes physical hell to get to their Happily Ever After. This book is not for the faint of heart. It is deep and full of “the feels”. Definitely read the first 3 books to know all the players, but it’s not necessary, just good background. If you’re into BDSM with a happy ending this book is for you. Over 18 years please due to content. 4✨’s
Book Review 4⭐️ 4🌶 This book is heavy with sensitive issues such as mental health, manipulation, child abuse (discussed memories), BDSM, and more. Please read the warnings. While I did enjoy the book, it's another that is difficult to write a detailed review without giving away key parts to the story. Let's just say this couple is the best, worst couple ever at the beginning, yet they find a way to help each other learn what they need.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book. Laurel is a club submissive. That means that without a Dom of her own, she scenes with whomever negotiates with her. When she meets Connor, she begins to dream. Problem is, she's the one doing the dreaming. This was a really good read. Note that this read has some harsh scenes and raw emotion.
Dark Consequences is book four of the Club Risqué series. Each book can be read as a standalone.
Connor and Laurel drew me in right from the beginning, these are beautifully written characters and they do have a lot of chemistry. I loved all the twists and turns of this story, and I also enjoyed the hot intimate scenes. I hope there will be many more books of this series.
Connor and Laurel, experienced in the bdsm lifestyle, find they mesh really well, playing at the dungeon. Laurel is a real brat, but Connor maintains order. She wants him more than just a play partner, but he has some issues to overcome. A great story and enjoyed very much. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
It took reading 80% of this book before it got really good, but since I had been reading the entire series, I knew there would be a HEA. I experienced many emotions reading this book and that’s what a good book provides. Excellent series! Also, the lead female character in this book was very disillusioned.
I have enjoyed the series by Ms. Flynn where the Doms are far more messed up than the subs. Connor and Laurel's story follows this theme. Due to a traumatic experience when he was a teen Connor has closed off his emotions, Laurel believes that with a little maneuvering she can make Connor realize that she is the one. She couldn't be more wrong.
This is really terrific BDSM story with quite a lot of the action in a BDSM Club, with of course other parts of the story set out side of the club. The story is nicely steamy and there is nice HEA at the end. You are sure to like the story if you like BDSM stories.
