There’s Eric, a fellow hacker seduced by a digital revolution he struggles to control. Hound, an aging veteran who has lost his place in a rapidly changing world. Danger, depth, and discovery. I'm an independent fiction author and vagabond travelling the US looking for adventure. As an author, I've dabbled in horror, science fiction, and fantasy. Even landed a small role with a Hollywood studio along the way.

But as a former government agent, I kept running across books about former government agents wandering the country in pursuit of justice.

I decided not to be a cliché.

Then, someone stole my Jeep. And I just *had* to get it back....

What an amazing return to the Crimson Son Universe! 4+ stars for the book and easily 5 for the series!

Back when I left a review for the 3rd installment, I promised that one day I would re-read ALL of the CS books because they had been so much fun! And in preparation for the release of 'Legacy', that's exactly what I did. OK, old age and creeping forgetfulness played a part, too (btw: why am I in the kitchen? What did I want?), but what a wild ride I've had, reading nothing but these books since early on April 30th and now finishing here near the end of the first week of May! The bits I had faded on (eg you just don't realize how soon someone that influences the entire series meets his demise) were all just that much more powerful and the bits that kicked me right in the power pack before still delivered a wallop! Mucho coolios!

And I think that's how anyone should read this book! Not because I think you HAVE to read all four to keep up (sure, it's more than helpful in terms of following the personalities and back-stories) but because the - I don't know, is evolution the right word? - of the world that's been created, of what Spencer and his friends and family go through and more just become that much more explosive. It's truly hard to imagine we'd arrive at this point back at the beginning of the first book. Then again, maybe it's not so hard to imagine if you watch the nightly news. That's what these books do to your head!

Technically speaking, Linton's writing style continues to be an easy-flowing but almost wild kind of prose. I mean, I'd love to be a fly laying eggs on the wall of his brain as the thought process for these books was cranking away! Left is up, down is a small puddle in a field of metallic flowers in the desert and the action is a seething blister in the Sun (metaphors beware or feel my wrath)! I was wondering just last night if maybe this needed a new genre to help things along, even though I'd rather not include 'cyperpunk' in any of my reviews after some really bad experiences with same! Superpunk? I dunno. All I can say is that the minute you start thinking 'ok, I know where they're going with this', well, you don't. And the greatest part about it is that it works! Yes, it works in the super hero genre but I doubt you've ever followed a title that has this many unexpected turns, surprises and just outright jaw-dropping events, no matter how many times Deadpool is featured!

And yes, I still think the books have a bit of YA flair to them and I will insist until I'm older than Hound that this is a good thing. Sure, there's a few more colourful expressions in this book and some, um, hot scenes (literally and figuratively) but if you're desperate to get your mid to later teens into reading books without the pictures included, these would be a great start!

My conclusion? Damn, I hope these aren't finished. There are enough bits left open - presumably all could take place before, say, the world finally collapses into what we experienced in Linton's "Under the Fuc"... sorry, "Under the FLICKERING Light" tale - that would make for some awesome spin-offs (ref. the great Charles Stross-ian / Laundry Files mention of dimensional fun at the end ... join us as Super Mom and Ember blast their way through .... well, you'll see)!

Oh and my concluding conclusion? These books remain fun as hell. Go ahead, let yourself go! You might even remember why you're in the kitchen along the way!

Those familiar with the Crimson Son series will be aware of the larger than life characters and involved plot lines - this being no exception.

Spencer and Eric are in a race against time to avert a disaster before it is too late to save humanity. As is the case, things are not cut and dried and the enemies are bringing the big guns to the table, in an effort to claim the planet for themselves.

There are the usual disputes and quips which break up a story which at times can be quite intense, adding a touch of humour in exactly the right place, to keep things nicely balanced. The parallels between this story and the ongoing political issues and conspiracy theories in our own world, once again prove how close fact and fiction can actually be. My only criticism from this book is that the build up leads to what can only be an anti climax of sorts, leaving you feeling that there could have been so much more. I sincerely hope that there will be a follow up so that the teams adventures continue and the story gets a worthy conclusion.
