Clark and Adelaide think their lives can’t get any worse. Until they meet each other.

Adelaide — heiress to the wealthiest man in the Ceithren Empire — has felt a void since her sister’s death. Just as she’s resigned herself to the empty life her father chose for her, a relic from a world that shouldn’t exist plunges her into chaos.

Clark — son of the greatest terrorist the empire has ever known — is still reeling from his father’s death. Since then, his life has boiled down to two things: his brothers and his next mission. When his mission to bring back a mystical artifact goes awry, he’s forced to choose between getting the job done and saving the life of a spoiled socialite.

But Clark isn’t the only one after the artifact.

He and Adelaide must work together to survive… if only they can manage to avoid killing each other before their enemies have the chance.

This book is for you if… you have wasted hours searching for young adult novels that feature mature characters that are eye-rolling for exactly the right reasons. Be prepared for some serious steampunk and a lovely enemies-to-lovers-romance.

Preface.
I suppose it's best if I admit this right away...

commentary 20/04/2020: I miss Gunther so much. Soft bois all the way, people.

Overall.

Yep. This is me, I'm also preggo because Gunther. Gunther. Gun-ther. I love him so much.

I just. Y'all. I love this book. I really do. It's not the most picturesque or epic thing I've read but The Fractured Empire still managed to nurture my heart in all the right ways.

I saved so many quotes from this book, it's insane. Usually, only fact-based books earn that much digital marker colour. Not only were there countless witty lines that made me smile or ponder, but I also couldn't help but be in awe over the writing style. I noticed countless times how impressed I was with the authors' careful and skilled wording. The only critique I can truly to bring to the table is that there were scenes where I was wishing for two or three lines more to make the plot work smoother or narrow down the veil between the reader and the characters. These were rare and didn't have too much of an impact, though.

I started The Fractured Empire last week on the remote bus and realised fairly quickly that my emotional capacities weren't up for it. I had a pretty stressful week that - although offering time for reading - made it hard for me to get into something. This precious, lovely, irreplaceable piece of gold did it. It pulled me out of this void I was in. I loved it all. The banter, the brooding brother. Gunther. The witty heroine, the mystery. Gunther. The bookverse, the characters. Gunther. I have mentioned Gunther, right? If not: Gunther. The adorable, kind, red-headed genius. Bad boys are so yesterday, gimme that soft boi. I love him. Although deaf and painfully antagonised for it from his biological family, he grew into this strong, knowledgable and skilled man who fights battles in his own way. Callum Turner came closest to my imagination although I am aware he's way too old and this is a general issue when teenagers are portrayed.

In my head, I tend to make the characters older so I can just go fall in love with them all I like if the book allows it. That also made me realised how highly inappropriate it is of me to have crushes on YA characters. The "heroes" in NA/Romance are usually self-preoccupied boneheads with little to no morals though, so, obviously, I hate them.

I also want to draw special attention to Nell (Lupita Nyong'o in my head). Beautiful, strong, powerful Nell from now on is what my Patronus would look like. She's fierce and unapologetic and this is what I strive to be.
”Could you speed along the history lesson and tell us what we need to know?” Xavier cut in. “I’m sorry, why are you speaking to me?” Nell shot back. “Be glad I saved your life at all. Feel free to repay me with silence.”

When I finish this series I expect Addie to teach me the heiress expression. I could use a change from my habitual RIB.

What’s happening.
This book is about the cutest lad in the world, Gunther. A red-haired boy with the combined brainpower of Albert Einstein and Alexander the great, seasoned with the perfect pinch bucketload of kindness. He's soft and loving and... I know for a fact the author pair will be reading this so I should probably give a taste of what everybody else thinks, this book is about [mayor eyeroll].
‘Sometimes, the things that didn’t kill you didn’t make you stronger. Sometimes, they just left you broken and damaged for eternity, like a china teacup that had been shattered and super-glued back together. It might look like a cup, but try filling it up with anything of substance and see just how dysfunctional it truly is.’

Addie's not been on the bright side of things since her beloved mother and sister were killed in The Silent Explosion. Alienated from her father, she struggles to find purpose in life until she is spontaneously abducted-slash-rescued by Clark. Although they couldn't be on more opposite sides, Addie and Clark are forced to work together to get the chaos a relic from a long-forgotten world causes sorted to their advantage. If they only knew what that actually even meant to them ...
Con:
hard to resist sexy ‘enemy’
unlearn to suppress feelings and dealing with them instead
weird mechanic but alive weapon hunting them

Pro:
feeling more alive than ever
trio of brothers + femalebrain power = force to be reckoned with
Gunther.

This was such a fun story! Had a tad bit of language then I usually care for, but the story was just simply awesome.

Addie and Clark are my new ship couple and totally need to find out what that ship name is! They complimented each other so well, but at the same time were like putting a cat and dog together sometimes! LOL! I definitely loved both of their characters for different reasons but was never disappointed with the POV changes each chapter. (Unless, you know, someone does something dumb and NEED to know what will happen next.)

The storyline was super engaging, especially with that ending where I was just like "OHHHHHH!!" really loud. A good twist on things and feel excitedly nervous for what will happen next. I'm not even sure what to feel at the moment, but if one character wants his respect back, he better change his ways. *gives him cold glare*

For being my first dieselpunk, I'm happy to say I want to read more! I'm already looking forward to for the release of book two ASAP because I want to see where things will go next.

Overall, a great read with fun, snarky characters in an interesting world where things are not all what they appear to be.

*(Many thanks to the author for providing me an ARC. I was not required to write a review or positive one. All thoughts expressed are my own.)*

A slow burn enemies to lovers? Fascinating fantasy world-building? 3 wildly different adopted brothers who would die for each other? 2 best friends who would do the same?

3.5 out of 5 stars
So! I am not used to reading steampunk books. I wasn't sure how I felt about it in the beginning, but I ended up enjoying the vibe and atmosphere of this story! The plot felt very original and it was overall very intriguing. I loved the characters. I loved the constant bickering and banter between the boys/brothers and Addie.

As soon as I saw the words "enemies-to-lovers" in the blurb and reviews for this book, I knew I needed to read this. I am a sucker for this trope and was super excited to see Addie and Clark's relationship unfold. And while I did enjoy the romance at times, it mainly felt pretty shallow. What I mean by shallow is that the attraction felt solely physical. Addie was always checking Clark out and ogling over his body/physical features and vice versa. And while this is fine, I wanted a deeper connection between the two of them. Perhaps this will happen in future books in the series.

Speaking of romance, let me just say that I would have much rather wanted Addie with Gunther. I mean, guys. He's just so sweet and kind. He deserves the world in my opinion. However, I guess that relationship wouldn't have done well, with Addie's fiery personality and all. If it were me, I would have chosen Gunther lol.

Overall, this book was good. I never felt bored, the plot moved along nicely and doesn't have any holes that I can think of. I enjoyed the characters and each of their personalities. I felt that we got a good amount of backstory and character development for each character. It was good and I am sure that I will read the next book!

Maybe this just wasn't my cup of tea because to be honest there wasn't a ton of wrong things in this book, I just wasn't as invested in it as I wanted to. I read tons of book where there were a lot of things I could rant about and this had a few but forgiveable ones. First of all, this book is really, really slow. I've read half of the book and it still feels like the first 3 chapters. The characters felt a bit distant to me. I couldn't really root for either of them or feel a bit connected to them. The world building, although having a promising premise, felt a bit lack luster to me mainly because I couldn't picture it enough from what I was reading. I would probably love it better if it built the history a bit more than just stating it in snippets. Also, the relationship between the main characters just felt bland and a little instalovey for my taste. I just think most of their liking to each other is a bit focused on their physical attributes than something deeper. Maybe if the book had expanded a bit more on their supposed hate towards each other and gradually turning into love from shared experiences, I would've felt differently. I also felt like the backstories before the start of every chapter was a bit unnecessary as. But again, these are minor issues that can easily be remedied, mostly my main issue was that it just wasn't as engaging as I hoped it would be. The writing was good though so maybe I would pick up any other book of the author.

Ok I admit, the slow start had me putting this one down for far too long. But after a nudge from a friend I picked it back up and once I got to chapter 10 I didn't want to put it back down until I finished. (So I didn't!) I am about to start the next and to heck with sleep.

So here's my heads up, it starts slow, but it picks up and it is soooo worth it!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I have no idea where to start. There were so many things that I loved about this book, and it was nothing like I was expecting. The characters were easy to relate to, and each had their own little moments where you loved them or hated them.
I think my favourite thing about this book was the fact that assumed it was in medieval times - with the ruling monarchs, princes and princess, swords, etc - but then you're surprised to find that it has modern technology/advanced technology. It was such an interesting twist that I never expected.
I loved the development of the relationships, and how none of it was easy or immediate. They all progressed at a reasonable rate, that didn't make you scoff because it happened too quickly and was too predictable.
The only little, tiny, insignificant complaint I had was just that I wasn't a huge fan of the prologue chapters, or flashbacks scenes before each chapter. While it did give us an insight into the world before, I felt as though it was a little unnecessary, as it was explained quite well in the storyline itself.
I cannot wait to read the second book. Bring it on!!

Fantasy with a touch of steampunk = I like!

I will admit that Adelaide got on my nerves in the beginning. She acted antsy and quite selfish, and I wanted to shake her a bit. However, after peeling off a couple of layers it became easier to understand and sympathise with her.

I love Adelaide's and Clark's interactions and bantering! They make an odd "couple", but the attraction between them is evident.

I also enjoy Clark's relationship with his brothers, Xavier and Gunther. They're all adopted, so there's no bloodline, but they argue and protect each other like "real" siblings usually do.

We get both Adelaide's and Clark's point of view, which I appriciate since I feel closer to the characters. It also makes it easy to keep on reading when you've finished a chapter. The fact that a lot of things happen makes it even harder to quit reading, since I want to know what will happen next! Now I need more!

I don't even know where to start. This book was so good. Robin D. Mahle is a new author to me so I wasn't sure what to expect, but lordy, she blew me away.

The story takes place years after the "silent explosion" that took the lives of Addie's mother and sister. Left in a world with only her father to look after her, she becomes another tool for the empire to use. Until she becomes the unwitting wearer of a necklace originating from a place of myth that shouldn't exist.
The only people who could possibly help her are the ones who were hired to steal it in the first place, taking her from everything she knew. But the explosion that destroyed so many lives is still shrouded in too much mystery. When everyone you know could be a potential terrorist, who do you trust?

The writing style is so incredible engaging. It kept me up late into the night because I was too enthralled to sleep. Great action, a quick pace, and endearing characters make this a can't miss read.

Stop what you're doing immediately! If you haven't read The World Apart series by Robin D. Mahle then you have not completed your TBR list for 2018!!

Robin released the 4th book in the series last month and was nice enough to send me all the books to read so I can review them all!

I don't know if it's just me but I usually struggle to get familiar with a fantasy or dystopian world. I'm normally confused for the first few chapters... but Clark and Addie make up for all the confusion. You want to keep reading because you need to know whar happens next.

I got all these steampunk vibes right away... the clothes they're wearing... the buildings and decor. And I just loved it! I'm a steampunk junkie!

Very early on in the book, I realized there's a few people who's not who they say they are and I'm a paranoid reader, so I didn't trust anyone. But in the end I didn't see the real betrayer. When I realized what was happening, I hoped that there would be a logical explanation for his actions... maybe we're lucky and we'll find out in the second book.

Also the one person I knew from the start, I shouldn't trust did some things that had my jaw dropping on the floor! And now I'm rethinking everything! That's how you write a book! Your reader isn't suppose to be able to predict what happens next.

Addie and Clark doesn't know each other very long but the sparks were flying from the first time they met. I really hope they will realize that they stop their nonsense soon and confess their love the moment they lay eyes on each other again! I just adore Clark and his one brother... I won't say which one I do not like. That you will have to figure out on your own!

This book had me wiping away the tears constantly. Both Addie and Clark lost someone and in their own way they're trying to get their head above water and not drown in their grief. Losing someone changes you, if you want to admit it or not.

Now, leave me alone! Robin already sent me The Tempest Sea and I'm ready to jump off the boat! I'll see you if I survive the stormy sea!!!

The slow beginning of this book had me setting it down twice, then getting back to it after a few months. As they say though, third time's the charm :D, and I am very happy I stuck with it till the end.

The fractured Empire is a solid and very intriguing start to a promising YA fantasy series. And once it picks up, after the slow beginning, it's an uphill ride to the end. One that will have you turning page after page and yearn for more.

Great characters to root for, especially Gunther! He is absolutely sigh-worthy!!
An intriguing wordbuilding made up of a captivating mix of modern and old, with a cool Steampunk vibe.
A lot of action with unexpected twists, fun banter and lots of feeling.
You can find all of these and more here.

The highlight for me however were the nicely set layers of the tale, which manages to keep a light and entertaining tone, with all the perfect eye-rolling moments for all the right reasons, while dealing with serious issues and themes and nailing the description of their impact.

All in all, The Fractured Empire is a solid YA fantasy that I highly recommend to any and all YA fantasy fans out there.

Steampunk, enemies-to-lovers, and one unique world make this an intriguing tale. I loved the three tragic brothers, the shady friend and the not so pampered would be princess. Watching the banter and chemistry was just delightful.

There are so many layers yet to be revealed, and you've got to wonder what's actually happening and who is calling the shots. Because I feel like the next book it going to flip everything upside down. And I am here for it!

A guy with an uncertain past, a girl with shattered dreams, and a conspiracy that goes far deeper than they (or you) can begin to comprehend. Can I get a 4.5 stars please? This is one of those series openers that, while not exactly my personal perfect read, is a darn solid piece of YA writing that should be shouted about.

First things first: read The Silent Explosion. This will be important, your memory will be tested upon knowledge imparted by this prequel. That's both a blessing (in that we get a heads up about some side characters) and a curse (a prequel that is required rather than optional reading to understand the main novel).

The story follows two protagonists: Adelaide Kensington, daughter of the Empire's official security force, and Clarke Noble, adopted son of the now disgraced war hero who is suspected of causing the explosion which decimated a large chunk of the capital city-island. Both were hit hard by those events, and both dealt with it in their own way. Adelaide's cold, tolerating the stifling atmosphere in the upper echelons of society with barely disguised poor grace. Clarke's been off using his skills for dubious purposes, pushed into joining a suspect organisation by his elder brother in a bid to keep them safe. They are drawn together by an ancient artifact which is more than it seems. And, it turns out, so is everyone around them.

Some conspiracies you'll see coming, others will blindside you. There's a lot of background politics going on as well as a whole backstory of military history and mythology. You can't fault the world building of this book for being unambitious, and for the most part it's executed perfectly (no info-dumps!). I can't say I felt the dieselpunkishness quite as much as I expected to - it's quite a mild themes which still owes a big debt to steampunk (cogs plus security cameras and mag-levs). Regardless it's a wonderful fantasy world mash-up of historical mechanical devices and otherworldly magic.

Yes, relationships in the book do develop in the YA sort of way but honestly, the tropes are handled incredibly well. I love that this cast of damaged characters are always true to themselves rather than being forced into the actions of a stereotypical romantic lead or villain. I would say that some side characters felt a little under-used (I still don't really understand Nell and Addie's relationship very well, or quite know what Locke was doing...) but over time you'll get to know the main four very well. Gunther and Xavier are great, complex foils for Clarke and Addie.

While I did find the pacing quite slow in general, it's still an enjoyable read. There's more focus on the characters and their backstories than on big set-piece events. The writing flows wonderfully, and never talks down to the reader - if anything some story elements are surprisingly subtle and complex for a YA/NA book!

And lastly, that cliffhanger... You will be left with far more questions than you have answers, but that's a good thing. Let's just hope that the next installment isn't too far away. I may need to start making notes on the peoples, places and histories of the Ceithren Empire, just to be sure...

TL:DR: Excellent start to a YA/NA fantasy adventure full of unusually deep characters and mysteries that are yet to be discovered...

-I received an ARC copy of this ebook for the author(s) and I was under no obligation to enjoy it as much as I did nor review it as I just have-

Great story about a teenage girl who inadvertently ends up in an adventure involving rebels, mysterious bad guys, intrigue and new friends made under duress. The story moves along at a nice pace and the interplay between the main characters is believable and entertaining. The book ends with a very nice lead in for book 2 and I am looking for to reading it as well.

{I was provided a copy thanks to BookSirens, in exchange for my honest review.}

{The Basics}
I honestly had no idea what to expect in digging into this novel. The story had a fun steampunk, early 20th-century feel to it mixed with a fantastical side of magic. Having never really read much steampunk in the first place, I found myself truly enjoying the genre in this one.

Were it not for the amazing amount of language & open sensuality, this would be a great 5-star review. But alas, it must be too much to ask to leave all the junky content out in an otherwise incredible story...

Addie is a girl still grieving five years later after the loss of her mother & sister. She copes with alcoholic beverages; tamping down her emotions & schooling her features into the blank, stoic expression she refers to as her "heiress" face; and acting like the spoiled, bratty socialite everyone believes her to be. She doesn't let anyone get close to her anymore & accepts the hand fate seems to have dealt her, all with her dream of finally taking that trip to the Ever Falls that she & her sister had dreamed up ages ago. She doesn't have a good relationship with her father---a powerful man second only to the emperor---and we sympathize that the little girl inside her merely wants the affection & attention they used to have for one another. Instead, she pushes him away.

Clark is a skilled spy with far too many secrets of his own, but with undeniable loyalty to his brothers. I loved the bickering & teasing between the three. Their relationships are certainly not perfect, and they each have their own secrets & flaws, but there's no doubt they'd lay down their lives for the other.

The steampunk vibe & world building of the island cities were fun, perfectly vague, & altogether intriguing---giving just enough for a good visual, but leaving plenty of room for imagination. Loved!

{Violence}
Five years prior to the beginning of the story, we learn a massive, yet silent, explosion destroyed an incredible portion of a city, devastating the area & killing thousands. No one really knows who's responsible, but everyone was affected in some way or another.

A leering man tries to force a girl to dance---she slaps him, but her bodyguard butts in & promptly punches the guy in the face.

A man pulls his shoulder out of socket during an escape from a highly secure building.

A guard is killed by a metal robot monster of some kind; we see his bloodied arm (implied that it was separated from the rest of his body) laying in the doorway).

One character suffered horrible, physical abuse from his early life on till he ran away at five years old. He had been born deaf & was beaten because he couldn't hear and understand. His hands are deeply scarred & terribly mutilated as a result, but still functional.

A dagger stabs an old man in the heart---dead instantly; another man takes out adversaries with his own dagger.

A character sports a terrible scar from collarbone to jawline---we later learn he was severely injured & outmatched in a previous battle against an unknown opponent & nearly bled out from the slash to the neck. Painful memories of the wound & many months of recovery.

Big battle in the forest between three different forces. Swords, daggers, & robot claws gash & slash, punch & stab. A woman is impaled through the body by the robot monster thing.

{Spiritual Content}
In a near-death situation, a character doesn't bother praying being certain there was no god who would listen to him at that point.

No one really has magic in this world, but there are artifacts said to be extremely powerful.

{Language // Alcohol & Drugs}
Several uses of "d---," "bastard," "to hell," and "what the hell." Many uses of "merde"---which is apparently the French word for "s---". Other multiple uses of the British slang words "bloody," "bloody hell," "arse," and "arse head." At least one use of "pissy."

A character drinks from a flask of amber liquid. A dance club boasts loud music, a bar, and smoky atmosphere. Characters drink scotch, whiskey, and champagne. A girl tried her first alcoholic beverage of whiskey at the age of fifteen---you could say she's an alcoholic...

Medical injections are given to at least two characters to help wounds heal faster---a pulled shoulder & twisted ankle sprain. A giant needle is plunged into injure area & obviously hurts.

{Romantic Content}
It's implied (and obviously true) that the prince sleeps around. At one point, a couple pompous, spoiled socialites like to gossip & boast about being with him. It's also acknowledged that the prince sleeps in the nude. Addie doesn't bother looking away while he throws on a robe. She, likewise, strips her clothes off in front of him & hops in the shower while explaining what's going on & why she needs his help. (No one in this book is particularly modest. It's explained as part of the culture where there were family & public saunas many attended every week.)

A brief description of how a character's friend has substantially larger "assets" (breasts) than herself.

A husband & wife share a sweet kiss or two in greeting.

A character reminisces on how her mother died before having the "sex talk". The character didn't prize her virginity, but instead saw it as a hurdle towards adulthood. So, on her 16th birthday, she went to a guy's room, stripped off her clothes, & they do the thing... She explains her decision that they were expected to marry anyways, might as well see if they were compatible. Her attitude is very indifferent about it. And if they ever marry, she doesn't expect him to always be faithful to her, knowing his affinity...

Strapless gowns at a banquet---mention of cleavage. Several sexual innuendoes. At one point, a struggles causes her strapless dress to come apart exposing her "assets"---she actually has the dignity to be embarrassed.

Two brother enter after a workout---obviously sweaty & quite shirtless after the exertion. Addie tries not to notice how well-built both young men are...

In one scene, Clark & Addie pretend to be lovebirds for the benefit of a cabbie. Clark throws an arm around her waist & draws her close, and she leans in---surprising herself by how much she enjoys the feel of him so near to her.

At least one very passionate kiss with Addie sitting in his lap, then moving her legs to straddle him---mention from his perspective of her skirts inching up her thighs... She begins unbuttoning his shirt and they both agree they probably shouldn't be doing "this," but do they stop?? She bites his lip & he loses all rational thought---(BUT WAIT) they DON'T do the thing. But GOOD GRAVY they got too close & a bit too descriptive, in my opinion... BE WARNED.

Addie reflects on how she would give men pieces of herself (obviously in the sexual sense)---but never all to one person. There's a reference to being a horrible match to each other---a match made in hades.

{Conclusion}
Overall, I enjoyed this story---but it had so much POTENTIAL to be absolutely AMAZING were it not for all the content... I'm still giving it four stars, but please be warned! This is not what I would call a clean steampunk fantasy, in any way. A thrilling adventure for sure! with broken & flawed, relatable characters, some [steamy] enemies-to-lovers romance (rather well done, I think), and PLENTY of room for the unexpected plot twists and more delicious plotting to come---warning! cliff hanger! I enjoyed it despite the content. IF the sequel ever went on sale, or was miraculously offered for free, I would most likely pick it up.

However, all that said, I can't give a high recommendation due to all the junk. Still, it was an incredible story with some intriguing world-building (including mystery characters), and one I did actually enjoy. These are simply my own personal opinions. If you so desire, you should read it yourself! This is the reason I write such thorough reviews, so that you are made aware of any content cautions. :]

FOUR out of FIVE stars due to a fair amount of profanity & sensual content.

The Fractured Empire was an interesting book. I rated it 3 stars, but in honesty it was more like 3.5 for me.

The setting of the story is very interesting. It's steampunk, or some variation thereof (I've seen people say dieselpunk) and I don't nearly read enough of that genre. It is a post-war empire, and a few years earlier there had been a devastating silent explosion in which the mother and sister of Addie (one of the main characters) die. At first the book had a medieval feel to it, especially in regards to ruling monarchs and the fashion, ships, and what I thought was magic, but over time you realize that it is much more modern with some throwbacks like swords and ships (the latter necessary due to the many islands in the realm). There is a lot of talk of Levelia, which is an ancient yet highly advanced civilization that disappeared, which brought to mind Atlantis. The empire is also spread between multiple islands, and there was enough description to be appealing yet wanting more.

The overall plot was also good. It started off slow, for a few reasons. Partly because I couldn't place the makeup of the universe. After the fact I learned that there is a short story about the explosion that probably would have provided more background. But the main reason was I found myself not liking either main character for most of the book. In fact, the only characters I really liked were Gunther (because how could you not - he is adorable) and Locke. The development of the relationship between the two main characters was okay, but individually they frustrated me. I fully understood Addie's depression and the poker face she wears, her desire to keep out the rest of the world, but there was just something off about her; her actions and thoughts felt all over the place. Many of the other side characters seemed the same way. But despite that, and once I got past the slow start (and got a lot of scenes with Gunther, who is my newest book crush), I was able to keep going because I wanted to see what happened.

Overall I enjoyed the book, but while I would like to know what happens next I am not sure I will read the sequels. If I got them for free maybe, but I personally wouldn't buy them.

I received a copy of this book for free from BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is only my second futuristic fantasy novel, so I didn't know what to expect going in. I'm happy to say I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I'm going to check out more books in the genre.

The characters are well-developed, and though I was annoyed at Addie in the beginning, I warmed up to her eventually. Her habit of hurting people because she was in pain put me off a little, but I also saw her softer side with certain people, so it gave me hope for her character. My favorite was Gunther. He was so sweet, I wanted to bubble-wrap him and keep him safe. Sometimes the characters I like end up getting killed, so I was dreading that the same thing would happen to him. Luckily, he is safe for now, and I hope it stays that way.

The book had a little bit of romance with the enemies-to-lovers trope, which is my favorite. The banter between the characters was entertaining. It wasn't limited to the main characters, but the supporting ones as well. I loved seeing Clark and his brothers argue. It was funny at times.

The world-building was interesting with a mix of modern and ancient worlds. I would love to see more of it explored in the next books.

The unexpected turns kept me hooked. I couldn't figure out who the villain actually was. Everyone is still a suspect. Every time I thought a particular person was good, it turned out they had some ulterior motives.
Hopefully, it'll be cleared up in the sequel.

It was action-packed, and I also enjoyed the pacing of the book. The ending was awesome! I had a feeling that a certain character would make an appearance, but the way it happened was shocking. I need a lot of answers, so I'm excited to get to the next book.

I recommend it to readers who enjoy futuristic fantasies, and for those who haven't read anything in the genre, I'd suggest you give it a try.

As someone who is intimidated by the heaviness of fantasy, this was such a wonderful story to introduce me to YA dieselpunk as a genre. Fast paced, action packed, love and secrets.. this book had it all.
I am so enamoured with these characters. Addie is a strong willed woman with whom I’m so excited to read more of. The brothers, Clark, Xavier and Gunther are a wonderful trio. Clark is cocky and desperate for answers on their father’s death. Xavier is frustrated and protective of his brothers. Gunther is a brilliant deaf boy with scarred hands, the sensible and more sensitive brother.
I love these characters so much! I can’t wait to see what happens next!
