Mason Family #1

Slipped up in Love

Rate this book
Love is Messy. It can be sticky. It can be all consuming. It can come out of nowhere. If you’re not careful, you might slip up and find yourself so deep in it that you can’t climb out.
Cheyenne has hated Travis since he walked into her class in kindergarten. He pestered her for years until the fates stepped in and moved him away.
But he’s back now… And pestering her is the last thing on his mind. His heart has known for years what hers is still trying to figure out: he slipped years ago, now it’s her turn.

I'm just a girl in love with literature. My love affair with romance novels started with I was 13 and has flourished into an obsession. I've always been a writer. Even when I was a little girl, I always had a pen and a notebook poised to let something out. You Make Me Better is my first project that will be published and I am STOKED. My goal is to write stories surrounding positive black love, with a little humor tossed in.

I'm late to the party but, I'm totally enamored with the Mason clan. I am loving this series! Cheyenne and Travis are in the lead as my faves. She really thought he was still on his bad azz silver teeth little boy shenanigans but, honey, Chey was not even a little bit ready for grown man Travis. He was nothing like she remembered and everything she didn't know she wanted. I was so glad when Cheyenne finally started seeing Travis for the man he is today and not the same little boy who terrorized her as a kid. I love the family dynamics and how close the cousins were with each other. Slipped up in Love was an awesome book. It was relatable, authentic, and hilarious. I love that the author ended the book with Cheyenne finally answering the note Travis gave her in 2001. That was too cute. Get into this series. You will not be disappointed.

I did the audiobook and followed along with the ebook. The narrators did good. It was clear that Travis wasn’t the same silver tooth kid who tormented Cheyanne. Glad she gave him a chance. I enjoyed it.

One thing that I absolutely adore about Ashley Nicole is her sense of humor that it's included in every story. It never fails to surprise me how much I end up laughing when reading about her characters.

I read two books out of this series last year; however, I made the decision to go back and start the series from the beginning to learn about the rest of the Mason family. This specific novel focuses on Travis and Cheyenne who were friends as children growing up. After several traumatizing incidents, Cheyenne makes the decision to never see Travis again until they are forced to reconnect when he moves back home. There was so much to love about this book from the writing to the character development. Travis was patient with Cheyenne understanding that he would have to slowly show her why it was okay to let her guard down. Their romance was cute and entertaining. It was also great seeing the family dynamics for both characters. Cheyenne had a smaller family, but it was still great to see her relationship with her parents. And, of course, I enjoyed the Mason family immensely. I don't come from a huge family so I always love reading books that illustrate such a close knit large family. The way that the entire family bonds through the good and bad will continuously be one of the highlights of this series. I also enjoyed that this book focused on grief and depression. One of the characters struggles with both and it was handled well by the author. The only issue that I had with this particular book is that it ends rather abruptly. I wanted a little bit more, but I'm sure that we'll see them in future books.

I was in a reading rut or slump, so I pulled this one out. No regrets. This was a super cute, entertaining and hilarious story. AshleyNicole knows how to deliver on the funny. Cheyenne and Travis have known each other since grade school. He was her so-called "bully." But in reality he was crushing. He was just a little dumb kid who did not know how to express his feelings but decided to make fun of her instead. I get it. I guess we've all, if not most of us been there on the receiving end at one point in our early teenage years, right? I love how effortless their love and connection was. No drama just lots and lots and lots and I do need lots of family. I enjoyed the Mason Clan and looking forward to getting to know more of them. One thing I will say is I wish I had more of Travis and Cheyenne. It was just more on the family side than the romance. Either way I still enjoyed the story.

This was a one sided enemies to lovers story 🤣

Cheyenne was not feeling Travis AT ALL! These two knew each other since they were knee high and while Travis was always smitten, Cheyenne wanted no parts of him.

Now as adults, Travis is still infatuated by all things Cheyenne and she’s slowly starting to come around after she’s realized that the Travis she knew as a child hits wayyyy different now pun intended 🤭 These two were a mess (in a good way) and I was here for it!

I enjoyed this introduction to the Mason clan and can’t wait to see what else is in store!

This was a decent listen, story wise anyway. Elyce Anthony took some getting used to but Sean Crisdean irked my whole nerve. I kept picturing Morgan Freeman in my head for the MMC. A very bad sounding Morgan Freeman. So in my mind there’s this young MFC and a very old MMC. I muddled through and I’m praying that he doesn’t narrate the remainder of the series.

Love Ashley Nicole, but I didn't like this story as much as I'd hoped to. Love this family, and the grandmother is hilarious, but too much focus was on them instead of the main couple. Travis and Cheyene hardly got to spend any real quality time together. The strength of their possible connection got lost in the shuffle of all the craziness that was going on with the family. It was funny sometimes and exhausting other times. I actually skimmed a lot looking for more interactions between Travis and Cheyenne because I really thought they were cute together.

Finally.....love

Well this was a cute read!

Cheyenne and Travis had known each other since they were kids, but they definitely left different impressions on each other. Cheyenne was tormented by his presence, having remembered how Travis always found a way to bother and torture her. Travis however had always liked Cheyenne, but had a terrible way of expressing it like most young boys do. These characters were so interesting to me. Cheyenne didn't really care for sex, she lacked the urge for intimacy and was nonchalant about the thought of needing it. Travis had grown a lot, but struggled with depression and the remnants of ADHD. Over a decade later, together they found solace in each other. Cheyenne found herself embracing intimacy, craving it even from Travis. Travis found himself acknowledging that he wasn't okay and being open to get help. These two were unproblematic, kind of mild, and just were easy together. I enjoyed them. I definitely felt like I wanted more of them together officially though.

I really enjoyed the Mason's. I have a big azz family, so it's nice to read about a family full of tight cousins led by their Grandma. I can't wait to continue to read about the Mason clan.

This was a solid 5 star read for me.
But the performance could have been a little better on audio. Sean Crisden was amazing. The way he brought every single family member to life was epic. Elyse Anthony is a great reader, however, she hasn't quite mastered the art of audiobook performance. The delivery seemed stunted and choppy. Like she was reading each word with precision.
I just wish she would allow herself to let the story flow through her. Become the characters. AshleyNicole does a great job with character development, dialogue and storyline. And the comedy is chefskiss!
I adored the trajectory of this couples road to friendship and love. The Masons might just be one of my favorite familes.

Some books just sneak up on you with pure charm, and Slipped Up in Love did exactly that. Childhood rivals turned lovers, a family full of chaos and heart, plus banter so sharp and hilarious it had me giggling through entire chapters—this was such a ride.

Cheyenne has hated Travis since kindergarten. He was the boy who turned teasing into an art form, the one she dodged every summer when he came back into town, the little menace who basically lived to get on her nerves. So imagine her horror when Travis returns all grown up, still familiar but… not the same. Definitely not the same.

The best part? Travis doesn’t come back with a smug “look how handsome I am” attitude. He shows up with quiet confidence, real maturity, and layers of grief and depression that make him so much more than a childhood nemesis turned dreamboat. He knows Cheyenne has every reason to be cautious. He also knows she’s the only one he’s ever wanted, and he proves it not with grand gestures, but with steady patience and genuine charm.

Their banter? Absolutely top-tier. The entire Mason clan? Pure chaos in the best possible way. There are cookouts, competitive grandmothers, trash-talking uncles, cousins in full-on rivalry mode—and somehow, it all turns into this warm, messy, hilarious found family that I didn’t want to leave.

Yes, it’s short—under 200 pages—but it makes every scene count. It’s funny, flirty, heartfelt, and just a little bit swoony, with grief and healing tucked in among all the laughs. I’m already eyeing the next Mason family audiobook because this one delivered exactly what I wanted and then some.

Slipped up in Love

Light, funny and cute read. Cheyenne and Travis had a little pull and push which was too cute since it started when they were young. Them together was too sweet, especially the ending with the note.

✨BOOK REVIEW✨- Slipped Up In Love (Mason Family Series Book 1) by Ashley Nicole

Sooo a few weeks ago I read book 9 in this series instead of book 1. I immediately added the rest of this series to my tbr. I enjoyed this low conflict childhood enemies to lovers book. The Mason family is so entertaining and open. I love how Travis and Cheyenne’s relationship slowly develops.

UNOFFICIAL BOOK SUMMARY🦷🪥🚗📝
Travis is heading back to Connecticut for two reasons. 1. To be closer to his cousins, and 2. for Cheyenne, the girl he’s wanted since kindergarten. Cheyenne wants nothing to do with him, but will consistent exposure change her mind?

I enjoyed this story. These cousins and family members are a trip. The funny was definitely in this one. With a hint of romance. I do recommend reading the book over listening to the audio book. Enjoy!

I enjoyed this story. It was short and sweet. Travis said he been knew he wanted Cheyenne and he’s just waiting for her to catch up. I hope before the series is over he gets a tattoo related to their relationship.

This was an epic blend of humor and romance with a few good explicit scenes. Chey held her childhood grudge with a vice grip but it was hilarious. This reads like a lighter McClain book. PSA...do not listen to this at night. Random bouts of laughter woke up my house.
Elyce Anthony narration was slower that i needed to adjust sometimes but I enjoyed. Sean Crisden was phenomenal in time and range with all the cousins. His comedy tone was hilarious.
I am so excited to read everything I can by this author.

I love it!

Travis waited some years and finally got the love of his life in Cheyenne! Cheyenne knew she had an irrational reaction whenever Travis name was mentioned due to how he terrorized her as kids. Boys will be boys but Travis the man is something different entirely! The reunion of childhood enemies was something else because instead anger baby there was fire/desire! 😆 their journey to lovers was sweet and without the title they were already together for me! Of course there were a few real life bumps in road for them but seeing them turn to each other for support was special! I definitely recommend this book and I can’t wait to read about the other Masons!

Waiting for Love

Super cute. I love how there was a true emotional relationship and friendship being built between Cheyenne and Travis. I liked that they actually talked and had conversations, rather than the author just giving us the characters thoughts.

This was so hilarious. I LOVED the Mason Crew. Can't wait to read more about each of them.

This was written so well. I really enjoyed it. Highly recommend it.

This was an okay read.

This was an okay read. There were a few, minor editing issues. The only problem I had was that everyone seemed a bit immature, minus Travis. At times it was hard for me to believe Cheyenne, Taylor, and Leslie were twenty-nine- years-old. They behaved like they were fresh out of high school and on their way to college. Maybe that's why this read like a YA novel at times. Cheyenne did so much cackling, hollering, and laughing that it got a bit redundant and annoying at times. Even the elder folk in the book came off immature.

However, Travis was very mature and my most liked character. He had so much depth and charisma. His character was written well. The author managed to make him stand out anytime his POV was given in the book. I loved how the author had him disclose and discuss his depression in the book. I could write a love song about him. He was easily my favorite character.

Overall I think this was a quick enjoyable read. Nikki-Michelle recommends this book.

Whew she fought it for a while!

I love them so much! Travis was in love and he declared that was his wife even when he knew she hated him still. And during sex, Cheyenne was finally hit with a revelation but I’m glad she didn’t blurt it out during sex because that wasn’t her and it would’ve seemed forced to me.

I’m honestly read to see what happens In Taylor love life cause I need her to give me something and Leslie cause she seems sweet and I couldn’t really get her personality like I wanted to with everything being focused on Taylor cause it was her family and Cheyenne since it was her HEA. I want to know Leslie.

Meh, ok

This was, to me, more of an introductory to the Mason clan than a true story about a couple. They hated each other as kids, he moves back, they hang out a couple times and then she says "oh I think I'm in love with you". Yes it could happen, but most of the book was about "funny" family stuff. And maybe I was in a mood or something, but I didn't laugh all that much with this book like I usually would with an AshleyNicole novel. The material was there, I just didn't find it laughable, I smiled but not lol. I felt like this was rushed or something was missing. So sorry. I love this author, would still read the next book.

Chey was NOT ready for grown MAN Travis lol

He was nothing like she remembered AND everything she needed once she got over her fear I guess and let go of his childhood antics.
