Lucy gets the same bus every day.

She hopes to get a seat to herself, tries to avoid eye contact, and, if she’s really lucky, reads a chapter of her book.

But it’s a Friday – and the bus is always crammed at the end of the week. Personal space doesn’t exist. She keeps her elbows close and clings to a pole at every juddering stop.

When she gets off, something feels different.

An envelope stuffed with thousands of pounds is in her bag.

Is it the answer to her prayers, or the beginning of a nightmare?

Because, in the end, everything has a price.

A compulsive read that will have you absolutely hooked and reading late into the night.

Lucy and Ben were making plans for their future, but when Ben left to meet a prospective client that fateful morning, Lucy wasn’t to know that it would be the last time she’d see him. The train taking Ben to his appointment crashed, and he, along with many other passengers was killed.

Five years later and Lucy lives in a run down bedsit and works in a grocery store - she doesn’t really like either, but the fact is she doesn’t have a choice because Ben left behind huge debts, and more importantly he’d forged her signature, leaving her in extreme financial difficulties. The only constant in her life is her rescue dog Billy ( and oh how I loved Billy)!

Lucy catches the number 24 bus to work every day, but she never really takes any notice of the other passengers, she’d rather sit and read, keep herself to herself. This particular Friday turns out to be very different though - because as Lucy gets off the bus she discovers an envelope in her bag that contains several thousand pounds! Should she hand it in to the police - should she spend some?

Things start to happen that unnerve Lucy, she’s certain that someone is following her, and there’s something strange going on in the apartment across the hallway after the last tenant upped and left. Things are going to get a great deal stranger and a great deal scarier too! Discovering the money should have been the answer to Lucy’s dreams but instead it became a nightmare.

I loved the tension that came with Lucy finding the money, and I was curious to know how it got into her bag - who put it there, it had me gripped. I wasn’t totally sold on the ending, but all in all I enjoyed it, and my favourite character? It has to be Billy the dog. Loved him to bits!

Lucy is living paycheck to paycheck. Barely scraping enough to get by in her studio apartment with her dog Billy keeping her company.
Where did it all go so drastically wrong?
Her life wasn’t always this way. Once engaged to be married, her whole life ahead of her. Now it’s reduced to a matter of basic survival! One day at a time.

An overcrowded bus ride gives Lucy a ray of hope. She’s surprised to suddenly find an envelope in her purse. It’s not hers...she has no idea how it got there. The biggest shocker? It’s stuffed full of cash!
Now what’s a girl to do? Lucy has always prided herself on being honest....but she’s so very desperate for the money!

The bigger immediate question is how did this envelope makes it’s way into her purse and by who’s hands? Who’s the rightful owner? Is it possible she’s now in danger holding onto this money?

Kerry Wilkinson has a way of cleverly drawing you into his stories. I found myself completely enmeshed in the story-line, actually losing track of time while flying through the pages. My only issue was with the ending. I kept thinking my copy was missing the final chapter...but no. That was it. Hmm....🤔

A buddy read with Susanne!

Lucy and Ben appeared to be the perfect couple, they were very much in love, Ben was successful in his career. Now, Lucy is on her own. She struggles to make ends meet working on the checkout in a supermarket. Whilst travelling home on the bus one night, she discovers a large envelope has been put in her handbag. The envelope is full of money, over £3,000. Money she could desperately do with. But is the money really the answer to her prayers or the beginning of a nightmare? I kind of guessed about half way through where this story was going, so when the twist came, I wasn't really surprised.i both liked and felt sorry for Lucy. She's been through the mill. I slap like the authors style in writing. The book kept my interest from about the third chapter. Another great standalone read from Kerry Wilkinson.

A Face in the Crowd by Kerry Wilkinson is a thriller that introduces readers to Lucy. Five years ago Lucy had been happy and thought she was marrying the man of her dreams but tragedy struck and Lucy’s partner, Ben was taken from her. Afterwards however Lucy finds Ben wasn’t what he seemed, not only had he emptied her bank account but forged her onto many more loans.

Now, five years later, Lucy is someone that lives day to day, paycheck to paycheck. She’s taken on a job as a cashier in a supermarket which barely gives her enough to live on in her rundown apartment. On day Lucy is riding the same bus she takes back and forth to work when something seems out of place to her. Once off the bus Lucy finds an envelope had been dropped into her bag that was full of cash. Desperately needing the cash Lucy is torn with what to do with the mysterious envelope.

Having read several other books by Kerry Wilkinson I knew to expect some great writing that would pull me right into the book and that still is what I found. I think for me though having loved a few of his others I felt a little more picky with this giving it only 3 1/2 stars when finished. The story was still a strong one but I found this time I just didn’t love Lucy along the way and also thought the end just missed a little something.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Curveballs, life is full of them! Just ask Lucy - the main character in Kerry Wilkinson’s “A Face in the Crowd.”

Lucy’s life hasn’t turned out the way she thought it would. A few years ago she was engaged and thought she had it all. Then her world came crashing down. Now she lives day to day as a cashier at a supermarket, while her dog waits for her in their small bedsit.

One day however, everything changes. Someone puts an envelope full of money in Lucy’s purse while she’s traveling home from work on the bus. Upon finding it she vows to turn it in! It’s thousands of pounds, after all! Lucy, of course can’t help but wonder how the money got there. That’s of course when strange things start happening. Coincidence? Hmm. Read on to find out!

Unfortunately for me, “A Face in the Crowd” by Kerry Wilkinson is a suspense / thriller that left a tiny little bit to be desired. I didn’t quite find this novel to be super twisty as I guessed the ending at the beginning. That said I loved the character of Billy (the dog) quite a lot. This is the second Kerry Wilkinson novel that I’ve read so far and I can say that I really like his writing style and can’t wait for to his next standalone.

This was a buddy read with Ms. Kaceey (of course!).

Another outstanding psychological thriller by Kerry Wilkinson. In A FACE IN THE CROWD, Lucy has been living paycheck to paycheck ever since her fiancé Ben fraudulently opened accounts in her name and ran up huge amounts of debt… then died in a terrible accident, leaving her to find out his lies once he was gone. Now it’s five years since Ben’s death, and Lucy is on the bus when someone slips a large envelope full of money into her bag. Strange things immediately begin happening to Lucy. Creepy things, and harmful ones to those around her. But who is stalking her and why? This was a creepy and well-paced psychological thriller. I liked the characters and the way clues were slowly revealed. The novel also did a good job of showing the struggle of living close to the poverty line. There was just enough detail to allow me to imagine what was going on while keeping the pacing moving forward quickly. Overall, I really enjoyed this book, especially Billy the dog!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5

A Face in the Crowd by Kerry Wilkinson was not at all what I was expecting, but I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised!

What it's about: Lucy is barely scraping by until one Friday, on her usual bus, she gets off only to find an envelope stuffed with money in her bag. She has no idea where it came from, or why it's in her bag, but she desperately needs it. She doesn't use it right away, but after a while she feels like she doesn't have a choice. Once she starts using the money though strange things start to happen, like hearing her favorite song played from the apartment across from her even though she's never seen anyone there... She also starts getting the strange feeling she is being watched. So now the question is who gave her the money, and why?

A Face in the Crowd had so much going on that I was always very excited when I had a chance to read it. It was also a super-fast read and I was able to finish it in just under 4 hours and 20 minutes. I gradually felt worse and worse for Lucy, and this definitely isn't one of those books where you are going to hate all of the characters.

There are a whole lot of secrets that slowly unravel as you read, and I think I gasped a little every time something else happened. Maybe I'm just being dramatic, but I really didn't suspect any of the twists until they were revealed, and a couple of them were quite surprising. I was pretty much on the edge of my seat the whole time wondering what was going to happen with Lucy and the money, and I would certainly say A Face in the Crowd is paced very well.

Final Thought: This book is such a solid book, and I am so glad I read it. I have never read anything by Wilkinson before, but I loved his writing style and his approach in this book. I can't wait to read more by him, and definitely recommend checking out A Face in the Crowd if you like quick, compulsive mystery reads with a twisty ending.

Thank you to the publisher for providing me with an advance review copy of this book via NetGalley, all opinions are my own.

A Face in the Crowd by Kerry Wilkinson is a thriller that hooked me from the first page.
Lucy is struggling to make ends meet. She lives in a bedsit and works in a supermarket and is living hand to mouth. One day as she gets off the bus she finds a package full on money has been put into her handbag. She knows that she should take it to the police station but decides to hold on to see if someone reports it missing.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked Lucy's character and was rooting for her all through the book.
This is the first book I have read by this author and I will be looking out for more of his work.

This book is all about secrets. Who can you trust.? This was a suspenseful read and towards the end moves at a very fast pace. The ending was unpredictable and made the book for me. It is told by the POV of Lucy. I very much connected with Lucy she was likeable, and had a great relationship with her dog. ( bonus points). You could feel her desperation in a lot of the book, especially when she found the money. There is a lot of side stories in this book which I found kept me interested the whole time. Another author to add to the tbr.

A stand alone novel by author Kerry Wilkinson.
Lucy’s boyfriend Ben and his brother Alex were killed in a train accident. Now five years later she is still trying to get her life back together. But things are not working out well, stuck in a small flat and in a job that she hates there doesn't appear to be any light at the end of the tunnel. Everything changes when on getting off a crowded bus she finds an envelope full of cash in her bag. With no knowledge of where it came from she is left with the dilemma of whether to hand it in to the police or keep the much needed money. Is this a lifeline she needs or the start of a nightmare.
This is a page turner which made it a very quick read. Good characters and exciting plot. You will find yourself racing through this book to learn more.

A FACE IN THE CROWD is Kerry Wilkinson's newest standalone thriller, and while not his best, it does feature the best character any book could - a gorgeous snuggable staffy! However, I may not have enjoyed it as much as much as I probably could have had I not spent the entire book on tenterhooks waiting for something untoward to happen to Billy. That constant shadow remained with me throughout the whole book and if it hadn't then I am sure I would have enjoyed it more. Having said that, I DID really enjoy it...just probably not as much as I could have.

Lucy's Life hasn't turned out the way she thought it would. Five years ago she was engaged to charismatic Ben Peterson and they seemed like the perfect couple. They were happy, they had plans, they had a future. Then it all came crashing down when Ben was killed in an horrific train crash. Suddenly she found herself in debt. Now she lives day to day, pay cheque to pay cheque, working as a cashier at a supermarket struggling to make ends meet while the new love of her life - her dog, a staffy - waits for her at home in their small one bedroom flat.

One day however, everything changes. Lucy is on her usual way home one Friday evening on the bus - standing room only - trying to keep her head down while armpits are shoved in her face and elbows in her back. Just waiting to get back home to Billy. She has the sense that someone is watching her and when she reaches her stop something feels different...but she doesn't know what. When she discovers a strange blank envelope in her bag, she is shocked to discover that it is filled with thousands of pounds! Upon finding it she vows to turn it in to the police. But as the hours stretch into the night and then into the next day, Lucy still has the envelope and its contents and can't help but wonder how it got there. That's when strange things start to happen. Coincidence? Or something more sinister?

Then Lucy begins to hear music coming the flat directly opposite her, abandoned by previous tenant Jade, and a shiver runs through her as the melodic sounds of "Rocket Man" by Elton John emanate from behind the closed door. But when she knocks, no one ever answers. There is no sound but the music. Who is her new neighbour and why do they constantly play what was once her favourite song over and over? Is it Harry? The new man she met on a dating app? Has he been stalking her? He is a computer hacker, after all, or is she being ridiculous? But then he is attacked after leaving her apartment one night. Or is it Melanie? Ben's mum. Lucy has seen her everywhere she goes lately. Is SHE stalking her? She knows she blames Lucy for her son's death. But whoever it is, where ever she goes, Lucy has the constant feeling of being watched.

When she discovers her best friend and neighbour Karen also has an envelope of money, Lucy begins to wonder what secrets her friend may be harbouring? Has Karen received an envelope as well? Or is she responsible for her's?

And then Jade's body is found and the police are treating it as murder. Someone they know could be a cold-blooded killer. Could life get any worse?

But when Billy suddenly takes ill, Lucy is beside herself with worry! What is wrong with him? She takes the envelope of cash and hurries to the vet where she awaits tests that reveal he has been poisoned. Who would poison Billy? Why would they poison him?

Lucy may have thought the envelope of money would save her life but nothing could be further from the truth.

A slow burn to begin with, A FACE IN THE CROWD is an intriguing tale of suspense that is woven with an every day story of an every day person in their ever day life. Nothing exciting, nothing extravagant. Just someone like you or me living week to week, struggling to make ends meet...when something extraordinary happens. I like how Kerry Wilkinson has drawn on that. Not someone who has it all.

I think it is because of this that I can relate to Lucy. She could be me. I know what it is to struggle from pay cheque to pay cheque, trying to make ends meet. And yes, much of that goes on rent and bills with not a lot left over for groceries. I could relate to trying to balance the cost of a meal and opting for the cheapest option. Lucy could be me. But thankfully, in this case, she wasn't. But I could relate to her. And the fact that she has a completely lovable and snuggable staffy only cements that fact. I have two staffies of my own and am familiar with their love, loyalty and devotion to their master. I could relate to the dead weight of them when they decide to sprawl across your lap your legs. Or anywhere that is comfortable. Staffies view life as if it is completely for their benefit. And in my world, it is.

I enjoyed the cast of characters in A FACE IN THE CROWD. We've already established I liked Lucy, but I also enjoyed her interactions with Karen, Vicky and Nick. Mark is someone I wouldn't want in my complex either, which is precisely why I don't live in a flat. I even liked Harry, though I was suspicious of him at times. And because Melanie was not a fan of Lucy, I wasn't a fan of her. But I enjoyed their interactions. However, there wasn't a vast array of characters and those that were only had a small part to play because the story highlighted Lucy's isolation. In essence it was about her and Billy. And Billy was, above all, my favourite character. I could sit and snuggle with him all night.

I wouldn't call A FACE IN THE CROWD a thriller as such. It is more of a mystery suspense. It lacked the twists of Wilkinson's other standalones, and I already guessed the "big reveal" about halfway through, but it is still compelling. I was still drawn into the story, losing track of time as read until the early hours. It did not have that huge climatic ending we naturally come to expect but I felt it was a good ending. And Billy was the hero of it all...as it should be.

My only real fault was in Kerry's "note" at the end when he referenced Billy with being a "big arse dog". This is the kind of misconception that gives staffies a bad name. They are not "big arse dogs". They are huge snugglebugs who love people and regardless of their size, believe they are lap dogs. That aside, as it was not part of the story, and Kerry cleverly did not portray Billy as a "big arse dog" in my opinion either. I think he portrayed him rather well, except that at 10, Billy would still be a little more active. Though the fact he is kept indoors would be why he is indeed a lounge lizard, as staffies are quite capable of being.

I give a whole star just for Billy!

4.5 stars

A Face in the Crowd by Kerry Wilkinson is a psychological thriller.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
It’s been 5 years since Lucy’s fiancé and his brother were killed in a train crash. The loss of Ben turned her world upside down. She went from a good job with a good future, to complete ruin when it was discovered that Ben, in his job as a day trader, not only threw his own money away, but all of hers, leaving Lucy deep in debt.

Lucy has been living in a one-room flat, in a not-so-great area of town, working in a grocery store, and just barely making ends meet. She often goes without meals, and her shoes are falling apart. But for all that, she has some good days, a good friend next door, and a wonderful companion in Billy, a dog she rescued, and who eats better than she does.

One Friday on a very crowded bus ride home from work, someone puts an envelope of cash in her purse. She knows she should do the right thing and turn it in to the police, but it’s hard. She really needs this money.

Between wrestling with her conscience over the money, going to another memorial for her dead fiancé, trying the dating scene for the first time in 5 years, and wondering about her new neighbour, now Lucy thinks she has a stalker. Strange things are happening.

My Opinions:
Kerry Wilkinson has become one of my favorite authors. One of those authors who I know will provide me with a fast, entertaining read. His books always send me in a direction I don’t see coming. This one was no different. Although I had some suspicions that turned out to be true, there were enough twists to keep me interested and turning those pages.

I loved the characters, all of whom had enough depth to feel real, and I loved Billy. As an animal lover, I rarely read books or watch television programs containing one. My fear for their well-being is much greater than my fear for the well-being of a human, so I was a little nervous throughout the book…..

Anyway, great plot, great writing, and overall, great entertainment.

Suspenseful to the very end. I didn’t connect with Lucy, the protagonist, but the twists kept me turning the pages. It’s a good psychological mystery with a unique premise that many will find engrossing.

This was a quick read and I was interested throughout to know how the story unfolds. I liked the heroine Lucy's character. She lives in absolute penury but doesn’t wallow in self-pity. And Billy, her pet dog's character was also masterfully done.

My first Kerry Wilkinson and I am sure I will read more books by him in future.

Lucy is having a hard time making ends meet these past years. She's stuck in a dead-end job at the local supermarket making barely better than minimum wage and has a load of debt from when events 5 years ago basically changed her entire life. One evening on the bus home, someone puts an envelope containing money into her bag without her seeing who it was. She knows she shouldn't keep this new-found jackpot, but starts spending it anyway despite knowing that soon she'll be called to account. NO SPOILERS.

This was a quick read, but there were no surprises here. I didn't really connect with the main character of Lucy and way too much of the narrative focused on her dog, Billy. The story will require some extreme suspension of disbelief. I was a bit disappointed by the payoff with the "big reveal" and the explanations without ever having felt much tension or suspense.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read and review.

This is my second book from this author, having very much enjoyed The Wife’s Secret last year. Unfortunately this one was dull and unconvincing - it started well, and for the first quarter I was happily engaged, but then nothing really happened until the unsurprising twist and a rushed “is that it?” ending.

Lucy Denman lives a threadbare life in a tiny flat, counting every penny earned from her unsatisfying job in a supermarket and happy only with her lovable Staffie, Billy and her friend and neighbour, single mother Karen. Five years earlier, her boyfriend Ben was killed in a train crash, leaving her with massive debts from loans taken out in her name. When an envelope stuffed with cash mysteriously appears in her handbag after a bus ride, she wants to hand it in, but the rush of having money after so long is too much temptation. Lucy can’t stop herself from spending it, but then the mysterious phone calls and feelings of being watched begin...

I wanted to like Lucy, although found it hard to relate as she obsesses over money, but then makes stupid mistakes and fritters away her newfound bonanza. There’s a rather patronising afterword from the author explaining that he wanted to write about what it’s like to be poor. I’m not sure he does anyone any favours. Billy the dog was definitely the best character in this. The plot dragged on as Lucy bumbles along feeling sorry for herself - self pity and angst don’t make for entertaining reading.

There’s a murder mystery side plot and a dating agency romance that I think was supposed to be funny but was instead just cringey, although that did feel realistic I suppose. It’s reasonably well written and there are some humorous asides that suggest a glimmer of intelligence in our protagonist, it’s a shame she doesn’t use it more consistently. There are plenty of positive reviews up about this one so others may well enjoy it more than I did.
2.5 rounded down for the annoying first person present narration.

I received an ARC from NetGalley which allowed me to give an honest review.

I love this author’s books so I was delighted to see that he had a new book out, this one, A Face in the Crowd!!

I really enjoyed this plot and whilst I did guess a major part of it around a third of the way through, so it wasn’t as enjoyable as one that keeps me guessing right to the end, there were still a few twists and it still held my attention right to the end and the pace for the book was spot on to build just the right amount of suspense.

I really enjoyed the main character in the book, Lucy and I really felt for her as the book progressed, she was a genuine character for me and I think sadly it is common now for a lot of people to be in similar positions as she finds herself at the outset of the book, I warmed to her straight away and was rooting for her throughout and I loved the addition of Billy!

Four stars from me for this one, I really enjoyed it, another well written book by Kerry Wilkinson – highly recommended!!

Lucy is struggling to make ends meet, often skipping meals just so she can feed her dog Billy. Her prayers seem to have been answered when an envelope of cash is slipped into her bag. She’s faced with a moral conundrum, should she keep the money or give it into the police?

Her life starts to rapidly spiral out of control and Lucy feels like she’s being followed. Who gave her the money and what do they want with her?

So I really enjoyed Kerry Wilkinson’s stand-alone thriller The Death and Life of Eleanor Parker last year, so when I saw he had another book out, I just couldn’t wait to read it.

A face in the crowd is a real tension packed read that pulled me in and didn’t let me go until the end.

Lucy is one of those characters who you root for. She seems to have been dealt a bad hand in life but still tries to be kind and help out where she can.

What I really did admire about this novel the fact that though is the fact most of the characters didn’t have a lot of money but they weren’t portrayed as criminals, just people trapped by circumstance. It also made a change from the usual more middle class characters you see in psychological thrillers.

Truthfully I did sort of see the big reveal coming but it didn’t spoil my enjoyment of the novel.
A face in the crowd is intriguing and well written psychological thriller with flawed yet realistic characters.

5-years ago, Lucy’s boyfriend, Ben, died in a train accident, turning Lucy’s life upside down. After his death, Lucy discovers that Ben wasn’t the man she thought he was and she’s still paying the price for his secrets 5-years later.

Lucy struggles financially, pinching together every penny she can to survive. Ever since she got her job at the local supermarket, her routine has remained the same—including a daily trip on city bus. One evening after work, she arrives home to her dog, Billy, and realizes something is off. When she feels inside her bag, she discovers an envelope full of money—more money than she knows what to do with. At first, Lucy is hesitant to use the money, seeing as it’s not hers, but before long, Lucy finds herself using the money. A few dollars here and there couldn’t hurt, right? But Lucy can’t stop and does mental gymnastics to lessen her guilt.

Not long after the money lands in Lucy’s hands, strange things start happening around her. Harry, the man she’s dating, is beaten after leaving her apartment. Her neighbor, Karen, is harboring secrets that Lucy accidentally stumbles upon. And the police believe that someone in their complex is a cold-blooded murderer.

Lucy thought the envelope of money would save her life, but she discovers that couldn’t be further from the truth…

A Face in the Crowd by Kerry Wilkinson is a short mystery/suspense with an intriguing premise. While I quickly consumed this book, I didn’t love it as much as I wanted to. The idea of someone discovering an envelope of money in their bag had me hooked, but the storyline fell a little flat for me. The pacing wasn’t right—it was especially slow for being less than 300 pages. The book really took a nosedive for me the last 20% or so—it became so extremely unbelievable. I’d definitely be interested in reading more by this author, as I feel there’s great potential with his books—2.5/5 stars.

A face in the crowd by Kerry Wilkinson.

A great read with twists and plots. Couldn't put it down. 4*.

It was my first time reading a book from this author- I thoroughly enjoyed her style of writing being in the first person it really helps you to feel connected to the character and see things from their points of view. Lucy to say the least lives quite a meagre existence, she is really struggling financially and has to budget right down to the last penny, her supermarket job just barely covers her bills and rent, she lives with her dog billy in a flat and doesn’t have many friends except for her neighbour Karen. Lucy takes the same bus to and from work each day, she is flabbergasted to find one Friday night on her way home on her usual bus that someone has put an envelope into her handbag with a large amount of money that could potentially take a lot of pressure from Lucy’s financial woes, but who would do such a thing and why? I was intrigued to discover this, I enjoyed the way the story played out, and found myself laughing as certain points I enjoyed Lucy’s quirky sense of humour, however I found the ending slightly disappointing hence my three stars for this book, despite the ending I really enjoyed watching the story play out and the twists along the way.

I enjoyed this quick, easy, very suspenseful read! Lucy is struggling to make ends meet after boyfriend Ben tragically dies in a train crash after which she discovers he took out many loans in her name. Lucy lives in a cheap apartment building with an odd assortment of neighbors who add lots of character to the story. On her bus ride home one day, Lucy discovers someone has placed an envelope with a lot of money into her purse. From there, the book takes on many twist and turns culminating in a very surprising ending. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this very good book in exchange for an honest review.

I thought this was a good mystery, dragged on a bit more than I would have preferred, but I really liked Lucy and the need to find out who and why kept me glued to the pages. I thank Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book by one of my favorite authors.

Let me begin by saying that Billy is a GREAT name for a dog - and he was definitely my favorite character in the book.

That's not to say I did not enjoy Lucy - our heroine - or the book itself. For about 80% of the thriller, I was all in - following Lucy and her neighbors as they went about their daily lives, trying to make ends meet. I was rooting for Lucy to pull herself out of debt - debt that landed in her name after her fiance died and his financial situation came to light. Once comfortable, Lucy found out that Ben had taken out loans in her name and had hidden the late notices. She now lives in a poorer part of town and works in a supermarket - so when an envelope with over 3000 pounds lands in her bag, we have a moral conundrum.

As is the case with too many thrillers, I found the end rushed and in need of editing. One story line - neighbor Jade's murder - seems completely unnecessary and leaves a ton of loose ends. As for the big reveal - the fact that Ben is really alive and comes back for Lucy - also needs polishing. Her reaction feels a bit flat and for Ben to let her go after confronting her in a dark playground only to quietly threaten her on a crowded bus does not ring true.

I'm also all for Billy being the hero but - where did he come from exactly?

Thank you Netgalley for this preview - I'm hoping the finished product will be a little more polished.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.

2.5* rounded up.

I seem to be stuck in a rut at the moment where I read books that could be summed up 'this could all have been avoided if she had just read her bank statements every month'. Lucy's boyfriend Ben died in a train crash five years ago, leaving her with debts arising from loans he had fraudulently taken out in her name. (This sub-genre I am currently stuck in could also be summarized 'why don't people ever seek legal advice, or at the very least go to Citizens' Advice?') Lucy is living hand to mouth, still making repayments. For inexplicable reasons Ben's mother blames Lucy for his death. One day someone puts an envelope of cash in Lucy's handbag.

There isn't much plot here, and some of what there is turns out to be utterly irrelevant red herrings. Lucy's dog Billy is the main character, and his trip to the vet's in a baby stroller was an episode of light relief. Lucy never really came alive for me and the ending was full of holes.

I have enjoyed books by this author in the past, but this was thin and disappointing.

You live in a crappy flat. You have to drag yourself to your crappy job every day on a bus you can barely afford to pay for, but it pays (some) of the bills so you have no choice. Thank God for the best friend you have ever had, Billy. Your faithful dog. He makes the sun appear from behind the clouds every time you come home. And I know that feeling. A dog really, really is a (wo)man’s best friend. 😊

But one day, when Lucy, our main character, gets of a busy Friday night bus, she finds something in her bag she never thought she would find in there: an envelope filled with money. Who left it here and why?

What would you do if you were in Lucy’s shoes? Would you do the right thing and take it to the police? But would you not insult the benefactor, because after all they gave it to you. Isn’t it yours to treat yourself and make your live a bit easier? Or was it rather someone who dropped it by accident and is going to get it back one way or another?

Should she be afraid or should she just enjoy this strike of luck? She will soon find out. The question is will she like the outcome…?

I totally enjoy this author’s stories. I always have the feeling that even after everything is revealed, some of the characters are still hiding something. Do I mind? No, because it leaves me wondering for days and make up my own explanation. 😊

I wonder though whether the murder was necessary? Not every thriller needs one in my opinion. The ‘problem’ could have been dealt with in an other way too. But it’s the author’s choice and maybe he used it to paint a more cruel picture of the culprit. In that case I understand it better.

Good book. 5 stars

Thank you

I am a big fan of this author. His standalones as well as his Jessica Daniel & Andrew Hunter series but I have to admit that, although a good read, this wasn't his strongest book. Yes, It contained much of what I love about the way he writes but, for some reason, it didn't quite hit the mark for me.
Lucy is on her usual bus home one day when she receives a package. She only finds it once she has got off. On opening it, she finds it is stuffed with money. A lot of money. She's broke and her living arrangements aren't all that. She has to penny pinch just to get by. The money could be just what she needs to get on her feet, get ahead of the game. But who put it in her bag? And why? Should she try and return it? But how? If it was put in her bag on purpose, what does the giver want from her? Nothing is free in this life... She is torn. So she starts to investigate...
Lucy's financial woes are not of her making, she was taken for a big ride by her, now deceased, boyfriend just as they were planning their wedding. She is finally getting back on her feet, clearing her debts and just keeping her head above water. So this is a big dilemma for her. But, she's worked hard to get where she is now and this supposed windfall knocks her for six. She starts to suspect everyone, tries to figure out who her benefactor is. The suspects start to rack up but I kind of guessed the outcome ahead of time so, even though this author has caught me out umpteen times before, when the reveal came, it fell a bit flat for me.
I think that my biggest issue, apart from the guessing bit, was that I couldn't quite correlate the Lucy of now with the Lucy that was major duped by her boyfriend. I know people change but her polar change didn't quite sit right to me. You don't lose stupid overnight. I also thought that the ending was a little rushed and a bit strange in the way it all happened. I can't go into detail obviously, spoilers, but it didn't leave me with the satisfied feeling that I crave from a book. It was set up well along the way but the execution didn't quite do that hard work justice.
The rest of what I do love about this author was front and centre. Characterisation (apart from what I have already mentioned) was good, there was no superfluous waffle and plenty of his great observations and punchy one liners.
All in all, a good solid read that has more highs than lows but just failed to deliver the standard that I know the author is capable of. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

A Face in the Crowd by Kerry Wilkinson

Ben spoke of weddings and such the last time Lucy saw him as he was leaving for work. Five years later her life is MUCH different as she is living on a tight budget hoping to make ends meet. Sometimes she feeds her dog instead of herself but she is managing to scrape by as she works as a grocery checker and goes to school. She has some friends and does a bit of online dating but really...all she seems to do is put on foot ahead of the other to get from one day to the next...until...something big happens...and...she is faced with a dilemma. What should she do with that envelope of money that showed up unexpectedly...look for the person who lost it, spend it or do something else? Then...bizarre things begin to happen and she starts feeling things are perhaps not quite right. What is NOT right is a mystery...until it is not.

This was creepy and interesting and perhaps a bit unbelievable and yet...it did make me think and wonder...what if? If I had any quibble with the story it was that I felt Lucy was left hanging at the end and if given a choice might have liked another chapter or perhaps an epilogue that let me know what Lucy’s future holds in store for her.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Lucy gets in the same bus everyday, but one particular Friday after getting out of the bus she finds in her bag an enveloppe full of money. From that moment her life starts to change.

I enjoyed reading the book, the pace was by no mean fast or the plot one to make you hold your breath and yet i had good time reading it. It seemed somehow more realistic than many thrillers, a young woman struggling with an unrewarding job, with paying bills, buying the simple necessities and then she discovers a new side of herself as she is faced with what to do with that money. Of course the story is more complicated than that with her past coming back to hunt her.

The end was a bit rushed i think, and somehow it had a rather negative effect for the rest of the story but i still enjoyed reading the book.
