Anche questo saggio è per l'esame di arte medievale, meno piacevole di Castelnuovo, Kitzinger si sforza di ripercorrere l'arte altomedievale nelle sue fasi e nelle sue diverse correnti attraverso la collezione del British Museum di antichità. Le illustrazioni accompagnano il percorso esemplificando i passaggi che Kitizinger vuole portare all'attenzione del lettore. Sicuramente sarebbe carino e utile leggerlo prima di una visita al British per avere una guida di eccezione!
