WHERE DO YOU RUN WHEN THERE IS NOWHERE TO RUN?

Jack is a retired cop who knows and respects firearms. A recent victim of gun violence, she is confined to a wheelchair, getting physical therapy in a rehab facility, and teaching handgun safety and Second Amendment history to the elderly residents.

A thousand miles away, a very disturbed individual with a modified 9mm pistol, a thousand rounds of ammo, and a singular obsession—to make history as the biggest mass murderer ever—decides to make that fantasy a reality.

It has been said the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

Jack is about to find out if that's true.

Joe Konrath has written over twenty novels in the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thriller series. They do not have to be read chronologically to be enjoyed, but the order is: Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Shot of Tequila, Fuzzy Navel, Cherry Bomb, Dead On My Feet, Serial Killers Uncut (with Blake Crouch), Shaken, Stirred (with Blake Crouch), Dying Breath, Everybody Dies, Rum Runner, Last Call, White Russian, Shot Girl, Chaser, Old Fashioned, Bite Force, and Witch Brew. More coming soon.

Wow, that's a lot of Jack.

If you like your thrillers on the dark side, check out the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective, which includes the books The List, Origin, Afraid, Trapped, Endurance, Haunted House, Webcam, Disturb, What Happened To Lori, The Nine, Second Coming, and Close Your Eyes.

Joe also wrote the Stop A Murder mystery puzzle series, where you become the sleuth and solve brain teasers to try and catch a killer.

He also wrote the sci-fi trilogy, Timecaster, Timecaster Supersymmetry, and Timecaster Steampunk. Even if you don't think you like sci-fi, give them a try. They feature Joe's well-known characters from his other series, and are insane.

With Ann Voss Peterson he wrote the Codename: Chandler thrillers, including Flee, Spree, Three, Hit, Exposed, Naughty, Fix (with F. Paul Wilson), Rescue, and Free.

And, finally, he writes erotica under the pen name Melinda DuChamp, also with Ann Voss Peterson. Those books are probably too spicy for you, so only the brave and bold should seek them out.

Joe writes a lot. You should probably read everything.

4 stars for a thought provoking book about mass shooters and the ongoing debate about guns in the USA. There are two threads in this book: Jack Daniels is paralyzed from a gunshot that happened in the previous book in this series, White Russian. She has moved to Florida with her husband and daughter to be near her mother. She is having difficulty with rehab and feeling sorry for herself. The other thread is about a teenager who fantasizes about becoming a mass shooter, as in Columbine. The two merge about 2/3 of the way in. Along the way, Jack engages in a civilized debate about gun control with a woman who turns out to be a survivor of a mass shooting in Iowa.
The author explains in the afterword that he wants to start a civilized debate on guns that would lead to common sense solutions. When universal background checks were shelved after Sandy Hook, I despaired that sanity would ever prevail in the US.
I am retired law enforcement and support universal background checks, an assault weapons ban and a national gun database, where every gun/gun owner is registered, similar to NLETS, an existing database of all vehicles and drivers in the US. When I wrote a letter advocating this to my local newspaper, online comments included one calling me "a left leaning, gun confiscating radical."
My letter was written endorsing a gun rights advocate who opined that "vehicles killed people and they were not outlawed, so guns should not be outlawed." I said that I agreed with him 100% and guns should be treated like vehicles.
Some quotes:
Robert Heinlein--"There are no dangerous weapons. There are only dangerous men."
Charles Schumer--"All we ask for is registration, just like we do for cars."
Ozzy Osbourne--"If guns don't kill people, why do we give people guns when they go to war? Why not just send the people?"
This was a kindle unlimited purchase.

Psycho Will Travel!

Small backstory:

Jack Daniels is back but under a different name (Jill Johnson) as things happened in the last book "White Russian" that threw everyone for a loop and Jack along with her husband Phineas had to go off the grid and had to acquire a different name. Jack is also confined to a wheelchair and is having some life struggles as she tries to get her head together and keep her marriage intact.

An unseen force is headed her way though as a psycho is on the loose and they both are on a path where they will collide to the point where Jack will have to figure out how to survive against a gun-toting crazy nut that just wants to kill people!

That is about all I can give on a small backstory so if you want to know more then you need to read this series. The series is not stand alone - the books must be read in order as things happen in the previous books to the main characters which rolls over into the next book.

Thoughts:

Normally I would have given this book four or five stars but this book reads more like a guns manual with gun laws that I just could not get that rating up to what I normally give out for this series. There are hardly any chuckles found within this book either as the character Harry McGlade is almost absent from this story and the rest of the characters including Jack are almost in a depression state.

It was a struggle to read this book as I wanted to escape reality with some humor and just disappear into the world of Jack Daniels but almost the whole book is a heavy dose of "gloom and doom" about what happens within the story.

There was some action within but normally there are some funny quips being tossed out by Harry as he keeps this series lively but with him being mostly absent from this story that made this book just downright depressing and I was happy to be done with it finally. I even read other books as I kept laying this one down and that is why it has taken me near two months to read this book as I just kept wanting to read something less depressing.

The author does state in the book that he went in a different direction with the book being wrapped around guns so he did dish out a warning and I knew that going into it but what I didn't know was that the book was saturated with depression of what the character Jack was going through with her problems and the book made me feel depressed.

I am getting ready to step into the next book in the series which is Chaser and it is supposed to be back in the regular groove of the series along with Harry being back more in this book so I am looking forward to more humor/chuckles and less bleakness/despair. Giving this book three "Gun-Nut" stars!

Konrath summons McGlade with the pun “Shot Girl”

As I’ve mentioned before, I am not a huge fan of recurring police characters in novels. It is kind of on par with zombies in my humble opinion.... overdone.
BUT.... Jack Daniels is the queen and Konrath knows how to tell a story and entertain.
If you are new to Konrath, start at the beginning of the series and you will not be disappointed. Although you could jump right in, you would miss all the great character references from past novels (FRANKLIN CANNOT DIE). For fans of Konrath stories, you have to credit this author with the guts to try something new. I can’t wait for more!!!!!!!
Btw.... even though I love a great Daniels tale, I can’t wait for part 2 of What Happened to Lori.

So glad Konrath has decided to continue this series. Love Jack daniels and this series is always fun and very good. Some of the book got a little long, hence the four star instead of five. But overall a great installment in this series. Cant wait for the next one.

Strangely thought provoking without being politically driven

Fits right in with Konrath's other total and complete gems, but leaves you thinking, really thinking. I am terrified of guns. I am considering getting a gun and have been for some time. I live in an unsafe neighborhood, but who doesn't these days? I have felt threatened more than once in my life. I have needed protection numerous times in my life. I sleep with an aluminum baseball bat by my bed. Really? Is this going to stop a perpetrator? A bullet? If nothing else, read the beginning qoutes of each chapter. Roll them around in your head. Read them to someone you know. Think about how you feel rather than how you are told to feel. All of Konrath's written work is pure entertainment, but this book has a definitive purpose. Explore it, please.

Shot Girl by J. A. Konrath is part of a “Jack Daniels Thriller” series. For those with only a passing knowledge of things alcoholic, this parenthetical explanation (Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels Mysteries Book 12) might help. J. A. Konrath is one of my “go to” writers when I want to read a novel I already know is going to be good. There is no mystery about the quality of writing; it is superior. I can explore the current mystery Konrath has created knowing that I will be surprised several times along the storyline. For light reading, explore the author’s background and publishing history. You might set up a personal challenge. Can you read faster than Konrath can write? Even if you find you are not up to the challenge, you will have fun on the way.

Shot Girl has several hyperlinks leading to other novels in which Jack Daniels appears. She even resides in novels outside the Jack Daniels Thrillers. Konrath begins many of his novels with a note that his novels are stand-alone stories. Reading novels in any order is not required. I appreciated the hyperlinks as useful information and did not consider them as promotions for other novels. But if it works to sustain reader interest, value plus, WTH?

As with much that Konrath writes, there is more than entertainment. Readers can learn things. While reading Shot Girl, consider a couple of dictionary supplements. The Kindle internal dictionary will be of minimal help. The first recommended dictionary is a slang dictionary. There are several options free online for both use in the browser or as a download. The slang to look for is slang used by the successor generation to Millennials. If you have a Plurals in the house, free consultations are prolly. (Word spell and grammar check, as well as Grammarly, will have fun with the previous sentence). The second dictionary, also online, will feature terminology related to gun sales and slang related to gun acquisition regulations, how to get around them, and how to modify guns to do very bad things. A lot of this slang is like gang or criminal activity vocabulary. Unfortunately, many people are familiar with the meaning of Bump Stock. But Giggling or Paperweight? Maybe not. Konrath explains much terminology with context clues, but not all.

For much of this novel, Jack is a most unlikely protagonist or hero figure. Assisted by a wheelchair, she lives in a senior citizen home with Mary, her mother, who picked the Florida facility because it also served as a rehabilitation facility for a senior, over fifty-year-old population with challenges. Jack fit the criteria as she spent much of her time depressed. Jack no longer has a career, is unsure whether she can keep her husband, and is worried about the effect of her current physical disability on the development of her daughter Sam. Mary has arranged for Jack to give classes to the home’s Seniors on gun safety and what to do if caught up in an active shooter situation. There are extensive dialogues between Jack and several residents, all of whom have their interests in topical subjects such as the right to have a gun, the Stand and Defend rule, and the rights of individuals vs. the responsibility of a government to protect its citizenry. As a fun project, see if you can define Konrath’s views on any of these subjects before reading the Author Afterword.

The novel has to have a threat. For that, the reader will meet Gaff, an eighteen-year-old who, to celebrate a birthday, stole mom’s car, cleaned out the bank account. Turning off the GPS in mom’s car eliminated the possibility of tracking. A new South Carolina driver’s license allowed entrance to unregulated gun shows where it was possible to purchase guns without pesky forms to fill out.

Can we see where this is going? Of course, we can, and there is no need to write more about this excellent mystery with a lot of humor presented through dialogue while at the same time examining serious social issues through philosophical argument. I gave the novel five Amazon stars because of the quality of the writing and several clever ways of presenting thought-provoking ideas. Don’t miss the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. Many readers may remember where they were when some of the quotes appeared; that will depend on the age of the reader. Be sure to read the epilogues; there are several. Pay attention to Epilogue Three in which an unexpected new character enters the story. I am interested in watching how this novel will be reviewed and accepted. Konrath writes about many emotional issues; I will be looking for revealed reader bias in reviews.

On to the next Konrath novel.

I debated with myself as to whether or not to buy this book. Well, I love the Jack Daniels's books so much so I did it. I should have waited, a long time. I was so very disappointed in it. I actually got bored during parts of talk about guns! I didn't care for the way the author wrote from Gaff's point of view. I had to google some of the slang sayings. The last third of the book was the absolute best. That's why I gave four stars. It made up for the first parts of a very disappointing book. Jack is usually a very strong character, but I didn't really see that happening. When Gaff decides to go to a retirement home to shoot as many people as possible things just don't go as planned. There are a couple of cool twists at the end. And yes, I will probably buy the next book that is coming out soon. One book will not turn me off this series. I know what Mr. Konrath can write. So, sir, please hurry!!

This one was a different sort of Jack Daniels story, centered around an active shooter.

The first part of the story is packed with details about various firearms and firearm accessories. These details may be titillating to the ammosexuals out there but, personally, I find this sort of stuff very boring.

And I found the shooter's use of so-called plural-speak quite gimmicky and "totes" annoying.

Still, this is a Jack Daniels story, and once it gets going, it's decent enough. Not my favorite, but worth a read for JD fans.

I Almost Gave This A One

It was pretty draggy and full of statistics for too long. The #speak and the teenage slang was a bit much. I liked the quotes before each chapter because they really framed the gun problem well. I didn’t say debate because there is no “either-or” dichotomy. The issue is messy and the author presented that pretty well. The last chapters moved at a faster pace. By the end, I was glad I finished the book.

It would be almost impossible for me not to enjoy a Jackie Daniels Book. This one was not the usual plot, and it did have its moments of depression, but overall I couldn't walk away from it. I rate it 4.8 stars and will anxiously await #13.

Another very good Jack Daniels book. Jack is still in a wheelchair from where she was shot in the previous book. She is struggling with rehab and at a low point. Then she comes in contact with an active teenage shooter, Gaff. The teenage slang is hard to understand. There isn't much of the usual humor. It is very dark but then we are in Jack's world. Good author's note at the end.

An AWESOME READ!!

As always, a can't put down read, until the very end book!!!
Jack is very disabled, in a wheel chair, after being shot in the back. There's a multiple killer on the loose and headed to the facility, where Jack's mother resides.
Jack has been showing patients at the facility, how to properly use a handgun. Some are not so happy with her classes. But, some just might change their minds...

after plodding thru the force fed gun stats as the author says in the afterword, I was glad I did, the rest of the book comes right back to the feel of the old Jack Daniels and I really enjoyed it- that crazy way things happen in her life!

This is the first book in this series I’ve read so far. I loved it. I liked the dual perspectives of Gaff and Jack. Making Gaff a female was a surprise since female serial killers and shooters are rare. I liked the opposing views on gun control spaced through out the story. Overall a well done story.

Loved the story line. Literally couldn’t put it down, it really had me on the edge of my seat. My husband couldn’t get a word out of me and I read it in one day. Great book.

I have read all of the Jack Daniels novels to date. While this one was not as gripping as the earlier books (Whiskey Sour, Fuzzy Navel, Dirty Martini, etc....) I liked the vulnerability Jack displayed in this story, and I liked the whole gun debate. I was especially impressed with the way the author kept a neutral stance on the issue. I felt both sides were depressingly well represented. It does almost seem as if there is no solution. Looking forward to future Jack Daniels novels.

Disturbing

I like a book that makes you want to keep reading to see the fate of the characters in the end. This book is a thriller. I felt I was there with Gaffe (in. body) as she went room to room in the retirement home. I also struggled with Jack as she fought to protect all in the home. This author wrote in a style where I put myself into the persona of Gaffe and Jack as the drama unfolded .

Glad to have you back!

Joe Konrath is one of the few writers that can keep me engaged for long periods of time. I just spent the last several hours reading Shot Girl and although I didn't like what he put Jack through, I loved where she ended up. I'm looking forward to book 13, and a little apprehensive of the returning bad guys! Thanks for a fun day!

Solid finish with promise

What can I say, I did skip several 'Jack' chapters the first half. But I'm a die hard Konrath reader and knew the end would be great. I wasn't disappointed. By the end, Jack had found her footing and saw in herself what others have always seen. I'm eager for Chaser (and excited for more Tom!).

A Jack Daniel's story with a shooter, a hurricane, and a rehabilitation/nursing home in Florida where Jack is recovering/working at as well as her mother. Living under protection with Phineas Troutt and her daughter Sam, Jack teaches gun safety courses at the nursing home/rehab center that becomes an easy target to a gun-happy teenager looking to rack up a body count.

Fantastic! I love the Jack Daniels series, but this one hit home. The Second Amendment has always been near and dear to my heart, but we've also had a love/hate relationship. This book spoke to me... It laid out my own personal battle. I NEED MORE!!!
