And now Jenna's got a golden opportunity to play a real-life secret agent, courtesy of her generous best friend and a fantasy spy camp set smack dab in the red-hot center of the Arizona desert...

The stay starts off with a bang—literally—as a car explodes to greet Jenna and her fellow covert trainees, each of whom have a spydentity based on an iconic undercover agent. But it's the real-life operatives who capture Jenna's attention, particularly super-buff ex-CIA agent-cum-instructor Torq Toricelli. Confidence boosted by playing a bold-as-brass hot babe, Jenna might just have a fighting chance with Torq—if she can make it through camp in one piece...

A few near-misses have made it frighteningly clear that someone is taking this fantasy way too seriously. Jenna's mission: find out who's gunning for her fellow spies—and live to die another day...

Perhaps it is a bit of misfortune for Gina Robinson to get me as a reader of her story, Spy Candy. I stumbled upon her debut novel and on impulse ordered it along with the rest of my books. I was teased upon reading the summary: woman (Jenna) is going to a fantasy spy camp where she meets hunk-a-liscious ex CIA agent annex instructor Torq Toricelli. In real life Jenna is an ordinary bank officer who gets to play the vamp every man notices and starts howling at the moon for. I was in the mood for light hearted and fun filled adventure and thought I was set for it with Spy Candy.

Okay, it is light hearted and it definitely had some fun filled moments but there were a few things so off for me it rapidly diminished my reading pleasure.

Reason 1 - Though this has nothing to do with the author or her novel it is a reflection of my interest. From page one the referrals to Bond movies missed its effect on me, I can place the “shaken, not stirred” comments but who the heck is Money Penny, Octopussy or 006. Referral to certain actions of characters or events in the Bond movies also was lost to me as a reader. It created a distance between me and the characters of this novel simply because of the fact I never seen a Bond/007 movie.

Reason 2 - The story heavily leaned on the spy business and the author was very descriptive about a multitude of aspects. It made me feel like I was volunteering for a spying 101 and though it made the Spy Camp aspect more realistic the only thing I truly wanted was to get more of the vibe between Torq and Jenna. With the plot that comes and goes it quickly became hard for me to keep on reading and invested enough to care about the outcome of this story. I even had to refrain myself from starting to skim the pages, impatient as I got to just be finished with this story! Perhaps it was due to the high octane of “Bond vibe” that it just completely missed the bull’s-eye with me.

Reason 3 was something that took a while for me to figure out but I suddenly realized that I was reading a story with a first person narrative. Now I can say it is due to the smooth writing style of the author but it is more likely that I was so distracted that it took me a while (100 pages or so) to notice it. With a first person’s point of view it is always a gamble. Do you like this person, does his/her emotions pull at your own strings and can you relate to him/her? Well to make an understatement: It felt like I came from Mars when Jenna came from Venus. Her love for Bond is so alien to me it figuratively alienated me from the story.

While this review emphasizes on the Bond gap it created between me and the story I feel that the plot was okay but not generating any sense of urgency to find out how it will all end. Robinson was definitely going for playful fun! The cast of camp characters was diverse with nerds, buff and tough wannabe heroes, and true to the core gentlemen. Along with the camp combat instructors who were all ex army, ex Special Forces, ex CIA and stuntmen to top it off. The two who got the most attention were Torq and Fry, Torq as the mysterious, hot male whom radiates danger but also knows how to flirt. And Fry as the Texas drawling Casanova, whom mostly had a laid-back attitude of sensuality. Jenna seriously tries to be a sensuous Bond-girl and her side-kick in her camp adventure is Emma. They both wield their alternate persona’s into the hot guy zone of Torq and Fry to find out about the final test to solve a kidnapping. In the meantime someone is taking the spy camp thing a little too seriously and starts creating havoc with some dangerous accidents.

The characters were all nice but besides Jenna and perhaps Emma no one particularly leaped of the pages. While Jenna and Torq had their moments where a spark was actually created it didn’t reach more than vanilla sensuality. And while some scenario’s breached a smile on my face - mainly when Jenna attempted to be the cool and sensual Bond girl - it could not elevate the pleasure of reading. In the end what really made my mood plummet is the lack of conclusion in the romance department. The romance was already paper-thin and though it had a spark and even chemistry between the main couple there was no true scorching desire and the ending retained no real closure or real sense of a future for them as a couple. Heck, he didn’t even reveal his true name and there was no declaration of feelings. In the final pages she went down on him with her Bond fantasy in mind!

While I feel I’ve penned down a review that leans toward the negative I will say that if you enjoy a fun filled suspense romp with a rich “007 energy” this might be an entertaining read. Or if you are an absolute Bond-lover whom is in search for a light humorous read I would say: “Give it a try!” It just couldn’t rock my boat with so many things off for me and in the end it just missed its mark!

Quote:
“But the real world of spying and special ops is no Bond fantasyland. You’ll have no special gizmos, no rocket-launching bagpipes, piano-wire garrote watches, laser-firing cameras, or machine-gun-firing BMW’s to get you out of the scrapes.”

be patient Fry..
selamat 'bersenang-senang' untuk Jenna dan Torq.. ;)

I added this book to my Amazon order only because it was enough to put me over the line for free shipping, but it was cheap and had good reviews. Plus, I've been looking for good spy books with female protagonists.

I loved this book! It was a lot of fun - perfect to escape into during a week when I'm stressed out, tired, and easily distracted. The main character was easy to identify with, the setting was fresh and interesting, and the story had some twists I didn't expect.

I picked this up at giveaway, but it never quite clicked for me. Perhaps I came into this book with the wrong expectations. The book is a romance, but set at spy camp. Sadly the spy camp is very underwhelming (it gives participants a quick primer on things like self-defense, situational awareness, and fancy driving, which was not particularly interesting to read about).

I wanted more action. More thriller. More secret spy sort of things.

I also was annoyed when Jenna fell for Torq, one of the instructors, because Jenna had a boyfriend back home. Yeah, she cheated on her boyfriend at spy camp which I think was somehow supposed to be romantic. The book didn't even say that Jenna and her boyfriend were having a rocky time, just that the boyfriend wasn't very exciting. Really not a fan of cheating on your current boyfriend with the hot new guy. I kept waiting for her to call the boyfriend and break up, but it never happened.

Sadly lackluster for me.

What a fun concept-camp for adults. Even better that everyone but our main (Jenna, but for purposes of camp you can call her Domino) is a big winner in the lottery. No, Domino was given the camp experience as a gift from her friend who was the big winner. For a girl who grew up loving James Bond it is a week in heaven, although the camp itself is anything but fluff! It is an intense training camp for the attendees to become spies. They learn how to defend themselves, how to shoot, how to drive like a stuntman, and much much more.

Spy camp has everything-including a secret mission, spying (of course), romance, and even murder. It is one exciting moment after another for the reader, with good characters and a plot that doesn't quite go the way you think it will! A fun read that has excitement on every page and some sex as well. Think James Bond all the way.

I loved this book! Jenna is sent on a spy camp vacation by her best friend who'd won the lottery. It's a James Bond theme, and Jenna's seen every Bond movie made. She sloughs off her mousy image and "becomes" Domino from Thunderball. The book is hilarious and suspenseful. People aren't who they seem, expected when role-playing but even more so. At times it was LOL funny, other times scary. A good mix with memorable characters.

So so

Not one of 5his authors best book. A thirty year old in a spy camp who acted more likely me a teenager. Nope wasn’t for me and it was a hard slog to read to the end when usually I find this authors read entertaining and funny. Not this one, sorry.

Wish I could go to Spy Camp

A delightful read for the lover of spy movies! A cast of characters that would rival a Bond movie. Lots of action with quite a bit of humor with a little romance that makes this book a delight to read.

I couldn’t enjoy the characters. It’s told in first person by Jenna in a self-deprecating style. She is klutzy and foolish.

STORY BRIEF:
A lottery winner paid to attend a fantasy spy camp for a week but had to cancel. She gave the trip to Jenna who works in a bank. Most or all of the other attendees are lottery winners. They are given spy names and learn how to shoot paintball guns, hide spy gadgets, drive racing style, repel down a building, etc. The final project will be a kidnapping in which they have to rescue a victim. During the week, there are several suspicious accidents nearly killing one of the attendees. Jenna suspects foul play. She doesn’t know who to trust as she tries to solve the mystery.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
This is not my kind of book. Jenna might be a smart banker, but her role in this story was being a stupid spy camper. She is squeamish, klutzy, easily frightened, and forgetful. She lacks conversation skills, drinks too much and gets sick, has a jerky dance style, doesn’t think to look at the license plate as she watches a hit and run car. When a nearby explosion happens, she has her cell phone in her hand, but is unable to dial 911. Also, there are too many reminders that she is wearing silicone breast padding. I didn’t enjoy reading about her. Everyone else is a suspect, so we don’t get to watch anyone doing smart things except the unknown bad guy. The story is told in first person by Jenna. Her self-deprecating style and foolish mistakes are meant to be funny, but I didn’t find it so. However what some people find funny, others don’t. So there may be some who will like it. There was one sex scene which was told rather than shown, making it appropriate for teenagers.

DATA:
Story length: 343 pages. Swearing language: strong. Sexual language: none. Number of sex scenes: one, one page long. Setting: current day Arizona. Copyright: 2008. Genre: romantic suspense.

ini sinopsisnya yah teman-teman, gw ga bakal nulis lagi sinopsisnya http://www.gramediapustakautama.com/b...

awal baca buku ini gw lansung mikir, kalo emang ada liburan ala "spy james bond" kayak gini gw dibayar pun ga bakal mau ikutan karna lansung tahu yg namanya kehidupan "spy" kayak gitu ga pernah ada istilah aman sama sekali.

Ga terlalu suka dengan buku ini karena:

I wouldn't call this a romance I would call it more of a spy/semi-action book.

Jenna Jarvis goes to spy camp excited to employ her many spy techniques she has learned on her own. But once a couple of "accidents" start to lead to someone trying to kill one of the CT's at the camp she takes it upon herself to figure out who it is. But while she is trying to solve the mystery she catches the eye of Torq one of the trainers.

It was alright. It was mediocre in the romance AND action area. I think it should have had more focus on one or the other to make this book that much better. But it wasn't a bad good it was just ok in my opinion.

Spy Candy was about a woman who attends a spy camp. If that wasn't far fetched enough, so many "accidents" happen at camp that it should have closed. Instead, however, everyone stayed in order to experience more near death accidents. I get that this book was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek fun and escapist, but it wasn't even realistic enough to make it interesting. In addition, the romance was so weak, I'm not even sure I care whether the protagonists end up together or not. I'd read such wonderful things about this series, that I was really intrigued, but now I'm not even going to read the next one.

This one was too fluff for my taste. "Romance" was all a big tease and I didn't connect enough with any of the characters to see it through to the end. Could have been my mood, too. Who knows - I think I had about 40 pages left when I returned it to the library.
While I've read a lot of romance recently, they aren't my primary genre of choice... they do work really well on the bus and at night to help shut down the brain.

I would say this book is definitely not a romance. Much more of a mystery or pseudo thriller. Overall it was lite and an easy read. The ending was definitely not what I was expecting, so it passed the mystery test to me. Lots of Bond references, probably an even better read if you are familiar with the Bond stories (I am not). Though its not a true romance it definitely has some great chemistry. Lite and enjoyable. Perfect for a vacation read.

This was an "ok" book. I am desperate to get over this funk I've been in about not finishing a book!!! I checked this one out via graceA.D.L online book selection. Total fluff but entertaining; and if I were a big 007 bond fan I probably would have given another star...but I'm not. The power of who dunnit totally pulled me in and I couldn't put the book down 1/4 the way through. Very happy I finished a book that was not in audio form :-)

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a fun, fast paced book that I really enjoyed and kept me hooked until I'd finished it. It had the right balance of action, mystery, and romance to keep me guessing what was going to happen next. The lead characters, Jenna and Torq were both great. I really liked them both, and thought that they made a perfect couple. It was fun following their story and seeing how things turned out.

First person well done...I loved the voice of this author. It was quick, cheerful writing and the mysterious bad guy was a surprise. I really enjoyed the setting, which I thought was different. A spy fantasy camp filled with people pretending to be their favorite spies from movies & tv. very clever.

"Oh James"

Domino has an obsession with all that is Bond. Lucky for her she has a friend with money to sent her to the FSC Spy Camp. Where Domino gets an adventure worthy of 007.

Fun book that kept me laughing and guessing at who would be our notorious villan.
