My feelings:

I really enjoy children's books.
And read them to my kids every night. But one thing I don't do is review them.
Why I don't know, but I decided it was time to start.

As a child, this was one of my most treasured books. Its pages were filled with enchanting illustrations that brought the story to life in vivid detail. The illustrations of food always captured my attention, each one more tantalizing than the last. I could practically feel the warmth of the sun on my skin as Mickey and his friends frolicked in their idyllic picnic setting, but even as a child, I couldn't help feeling a twinge of guilt when they tried to exclude poor Donald Duck from their fun. Despite its lighthearted tone, the book taught an important lesson about inclusivity and friendship that has stayed with me through the years.

Highly recommend.

This was a favorite book of mine as a kid. This may sound strange, but I cared the most about the wonderful illustrations of food in the book, especially the delicious big chocolate cake! I remember feeling bad that Mickey and his friends tried to exclude Donald Duck from their fun picnic. LOL. But it does teach a good social lesson.

This book was a staple at my grandparents' house. The sound of my grandmother's voice readily comes back to me when I think about passages from this book. It's also how I learned a new meaning for the word 'cross.' :)

Mickey Mouse's Picnic by Jane Werner was a fun read. Mickey, Minnie and the gang are going on a picnic but don't invite Donald...

A Little Golden Book from my youth, re-read as an adult. The moral of the story is a little cloudy, as you are really in trouble whether or not you invite Donald Duck along on your picnic.

Mickey Mouse’s days were numbered.

At least at the cinema. Despite being Disney’s biggest box office draw in the late 1920s and early 1930s, by 1950 he was all but absent from screens in favour of Donald Duck and Pluto cartoons. Indeed, in 1950 – when this book was released – there wasn’t a single Mickey Mouse cartoon. The year before, he’d had one brief cameo in a Pluto short film. So, in the absence of any Mickey Mouse theatrical outings for the era, we have this storybook.

The book itself is pretty lightweight, and not dissimilar to one of Mickey’s first storybooks back in the 1930s. The premise is simple: the gang decides to go on a picnic, but not invite Donald Duck because of what happened “last time.” (What this was is never revealed, but Donald is first spotted here “watching from behind the bushes.” I’ll just leave that there). Everyone has a pleasant day, Donald tries to cause mischief, but all’s well that ends well.

Illustrations are beautiful watercolours, at one point including the rare vision of Mickey’s shoeless feet. While we know that the book was written by the celebrated children’s author Jane Werner Watson, art credit is simply given to the artists of the Walt Disney Studios.

Within a few years, Mickey would see a resurgence on the newer medium of television with the debut of the Mickey Mouse Club (1955 - 1959) and its iconic song. As such, it was television, comics and books like this that sustained Mickey fans during the character’s long absence from cinemas between 1953 and 1983.

In Mickey Mouse's picnic, Minnie and Mickey create a fun picnic day all planned out with treats and food, destination like the park to have the picnic. They plan out to have cake, sandwiches, drinks, and fruit fort heir day at the park. They have this all planned out for them and their friends. With the pictures drawn pf the park and picnic as imagery in the book. I would say there is imagery used a ton throughout their creation of the picnic. I would rate this book a 5 because it is good for young kids to read and learn to share and be a good friend to their peers and close friends at school and at home.

Mickey was wrong to exclude Donald because he was difficult. Donald was wrong to sabotage their clothes and claim their lunch. Friends should be friends. These days, I'm not particularly a fan of the world of Disney. This story seems okay, however, and is a classic Little Golden Book from my youth. My kiddos love it and it was a nice read with my three-year-old #redmermaidwarrior daughter today.

These older disney Little golden books are always a good read and they do not disappoint. You are sure to have some good discussions about friendship. They don't invite Donald Duck. He takes their lunch. He then shares the lunch with them. So much Disney Drama.

I loved this book as a kid, but the only thing I remembered about it was the knife taped to the bottom of the cake platter. :)

Join Mickey, Minnie, and their lovable gang as they embark on a delightful picnic adventure. However, there's a twist—Donald Duck doesn't receive an invitation! This cherished book holds a special place in my heart, as it was a constant presence during my visits to my grandma's house. It's a timeless tale that teaches important lessons about friendship, inclusivity, and the joy of spending time together.
