Get reading on this epic adventure today! What are readers saying?--Really got into the story and read to the end in less than a day and will buy the next book is well written - not just the action sequencing but the cutaways to the next sequence detail is very well done. A compelling read. Worth every minute of my time. ----While some parts stretched my imagination, Ray's metamorphism from husband and father to killer Corporate Marine is entertaining! It contrasts government corruption and self interest with corporate efficiency and greed! ----A promising new series. Looking forward to the next book.--
I came to this planet sixty some odd years ago. After exiting my mother's portal, the doctor slapped me around until I started breathing the oxygen. I'll admit, at the time, I had no idea what I was doing or where I was. Being an infant Human, I was completely reliant on the responsible actions of others. It was a time that I have largely forgotten.
I reside in Central Florida with the wife and children. After thirty years in engineering, my time is now spent chronicling the adventures of fictitious heroes. They are off-world, fighting the good fight. For me? I'm stuck here on this planet in this feeble existence that we Humans are all forced to endure.
So, I ask you this... do you wish to escape the bonds of this surly planet we call Earth? Are you looking for a bit more adventure than what the grocery store has to offer? Do you worry about being enslaved by alien androids or six-eyed alien goats with lasers? Pew, pew, pew!
Yeah, that's what I thought. Asking yourself those questions and getting back an answer is the first hurdle to cross in the race to get off this world. Sounds like you are ready to venture out, to put this place behind you.
So crack open one of my books. Take to the heavens and let me shout this out to those who remain: "Watch out universe! Another Human is on the loose!"
(See all of my Book Reviews) - Author Stephen Arseneault (https://www.arsenex.com) published the novel “A Hero” in 2019. Mr. Arseneault has published more than 50 novels. This is the first of his "Corporation Wars" series.
I received an ARC of this novel through https://www.netgalley.com in return for a fair and honest review. I categorize this novel as “R” because it contains scenes of violence. The story is set in the far future. The primary character is Rayford Tyvos Jackson.
Jackson has recently graduated from college with an engineering degree. Work is hard to find and he needs to find a way to support his wife and daughter. The Jackson family decide to travel to the remote mining colony of Echelon. The job with the Arlis Corporation is the only one he can find. He is expecting a good position with Arlis. His best friend at college is running the Echelon mining facility. He hopes this will be a good career move, but the corporation imposes strict rules. Soon, he and his family are fed up and are ready to leave.
Aliens are sited in human space, but they avoid all contact. Without warning, they begin to mercilessly attack human settlements. Humanity has not had a war in decades. The military is ill-equipped and the politicians are unwilling to make hard decisions. As Jackson has feared, there is an attack on the mining facilities on Echelon. Casualties are widespread and include Jackson's wife and daughter. Seeking revenge Jackson enlists in the Marines.
Human forces struggle against the aliens. They call themselves the Togmal but little is known about them. Even after years of war, there has been no communication. While they win a few battles, humanity is losing the war. Major corporations, including Arlis, step up and offer to take over the war. They claim that their organization and efficiency will enable humans to win. The corporations take over the military. They also take over most functions of the government. The result is that newer and better weapons begin to flow to the troops. Slowly the tide begins to turn.
I enjoyed the 7+ hours I spent reading this 330-page science-fiction thriller. The story is full of action as well as subtle intrigue. I am looking forward to the next novel in the series. This is the second novel I have read from Arseneault (ARMS War for Eden was the other). I have enjoyed them both. I like the selected cover art. I give this novel a 5 out of 5.
Have to say it was a good read! Finished in less than a day in two sittings
Really got into the story and read to the end in less than a day and will buy the next one. Good reads challenge and kindle unlimited and Amazon prime member. Bought this one and will the next I sometimes I buy rather than borrow if I think I may read it more than once. Was sent a link for book two and had not read one so I searched Amazon for it and read the preview and then bought. Check out the story yourself!
ehh Read the first few pages. Then skipped to last few pages. Predictable
Really don't like leaving bad reviews for indie writers. The little bit of the Story and writing that I read, was dull and predictable. I didn't read the whole book. The first few pages were grating to me and I thought would just skip to the ending and yep it ended with a cliche. Didn't grab my attention.
Ray, who is a recently qualified engineer, is forced to take a job with the Arliss corporation on a mining project on a far flung planet, which is extremely cold, and he takes his wife and daughter with him. Aliens start invading and his wife and daughter are killed by them. This starts him on a trail of retribution. He joins the marines and through his actions and leadership abilities a hero is born. The action is continuous, the characters are great, and the other battle, between the government and the corporations form a back drop to this highly entertaining book. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves a very good story with great characters.
I’ve just finished corporation wars book 1 and some of the other reviews this book is a military space opera if you’re thing is Jane Austin why read a book like this and write a poor review. I was quite happy to read this book I thought it was good well written and have already bought books 2 3 and 4.Stephen is an excellent writer and i will continue to follow his book’s’ how long till the next squad series comes out bye the way thanks Tat
Another good story and a good mix of corporate politics and warfare action with a very good set of characters ,and an appealing backstory which i think is what Arseneault does best.
Author creatively has reader follow interesting main character through a war from its beginning to ending. Reader is not bored due to the continuous action. Finally the conspiracy is uncovered and I liked how the failures and successes justified.
Just as Shakespeare's plays reflected the political realities of his time, this book reflects the political manipulation of the military during the last administration
