It pains me to say this, but something went seriously awry with the delivery of this story. As a huge fan of the series, I consider myself a fan of Sue’s writing (in general) and I was excited to read this fourth story, especially because gentle giant Vance has always been a series favourite of mine. But, unfortunately, from the very first page I felt like something was off with the writing and the way the story was being told.
The plot was unclear at times and I found myself having to re-read passages just to get my head around what was happening in any give scene, particularly in terms of working out who was who among the immense cast of fairly vague (and maybe, sometimes unnecessary/pointless) secondary characters. There were simply too many players in this game. I know there is a character index and a glossary at the beginning, but this only told me what I already knew and was of little help in keeping the countless new characters straight in my head.
Honestly, I think I gave up trying to remember who characters were and what was going on in the plot around the halfway mark, and instead I just tried to enjoy myself and appreciate the characters I did know and love as they shared scenes together.
This series has always been heavy with the animosity and prejudice towards those who are “enhanced” but I feel like this one was even heavier with the hate. So many characters made me ragey, especially because the treatment of the enhanced – the children in particular – was beyond unconscionable. Even with the fantasy/sci-fi elements, I feel like this, perhaps, is meant to be a reflection on today’s social climate, and if so, that’s damn scary and depressing. Either way, I felt this was too much with the unchecked bigotry.
This then leads me to a lot of confusion and frustration as to what actually transpired in the final act, especially in terms of how the events sequentially played out and what actually happened to the bad guys. I was told the good guys won – YAY! – but I’m still scratching my head as to how it all unfolded. Hell, I’m still confused as to who the bad guys even were and how they related to the other stories, and I certainly didn’t understand their motives or what they were trying to achieve in their bad guy scheme.
This brings me to my main beef with the story. I have no idea what went wrong but where on Earth was the romance?? In book three, series regular Vance met and grew heart-eyes for undercover agent Sam, at the end of which they were made new partners. I was chomping at the bit to see how their love story would unfold, only to be left utterly disappointed by what transpired here. Vance was still a lovely character, delivering the perfect gentle giants vibes I love so much in my reading, but Sam was a whole other story. Sam was emotionally vacant, and by that, I mean I didn’t connect to his character at all. He was simply there. Even when he was telling his sad-tragic-past story, I didn’t feel a thing. He treated Vance like crap, over and over again, reflecting a sense of total disinterest, right up until the 93% mark when all of a sudden, he was all in and in love!? It literally came out of nowhere and left me in disbelief rather than happy that they were finally getting together. And don’t even get me started on the events in the epilogue – what even was that!?!?! Left-field and unrealistic much!?
Sigh…
So, yes, this was a huge-ass disappointment to me in terms of writing, plot, and romance. BUT…there’s always a but… I still love the premise of this series and I still adore the core characters. The way these men interact as a team and as friends/family is still heart-warming to witness. I also still very much enjoy the focus that is always put on helping/protecting the enhanced children – even if there were way too many of them mentioned to keep track of easily.
Ultimately, this was not what I’d expected, but I still hold out hope that future installments will deliver the goods and get this series and its awesome characters back on track!
