Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.

Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.

In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.

I don't normally 'review' single issues of comicbook series but... well, anybody who reads the book will know why I'm making an exception in this case.

I'm not sure if my facial lubrication is of the happy or sad variety, to be honest, but... well:

Oh boy, here we go. I must say Kirkman did a nice conclusion to the series. The very last issue is about farewell, showing us the world of TWD a few years after issue 192. Kirkman and Adlar present us a nice peaceful closure, farewell to all our (more or less) beloved characters (even for my favourite Negan despite Kirkman's claim in 192 letters that we will never ever see Negan again...). There is few pages long letter from Kirkman, explaining what led to this finale, giving some interesting info from behind the scenes. I wish he would reach and end at that legendary 300th milestone, but I understand and accept the reasons. I'm happy the series ended this way, giving readers satisfaction and ending on its peak. I'm also sad that TWD ends. But it's bittersweet sadness, that sadness which actually feels good. And for that, Robert, I thank you. You're forgiven for everything, it was a hell of a ride.

I really hate reviewing single issues but since I've already written a review for the last volume (where this issue will be most likely added) I have no other option :).

Anyways, I loved absolutely everything about this issue! I love the fact that Kirkman managed to mislead both retailers and readers with fake solicitations for issues #194-196 and NOBODY was expecting the sudden end.

Storywise, I believe it was a perfect time to wrap things up I liked the time jump approx. 20 years in the future to see most of the characters at the dawn of their days and finally enjoying the well-deserved and well-fought peace (incl. a little glimpse of Negan). Even the "semi-story" Carl vs. Hershel jr. was enjoyable.

The "farewell note" at the end of the issue was great too. Kirkman explaining the decision, original plan to end it around issue #80, trying to stretch the story to #300, etc.

So after 7 years of reading TWD every month, this party is over and it was a hell of a trip! Thanks for the memories TWD team!

The end of walking dead in the comic is different to the TV series, but that does not take away that this comic is very good. Carl now a grown man is still aware of the dangers out in the world, even if most of the population have forgotten the horrors of 10 years+ previous. Things have change so much that now Walkers (Zombies) are kept for show, one escapes and Carl kills it as it nears his home. The aftermath, is that he goes to court for killing another person property (the walker, that is right, a walker is now another persons property), but the Judge is a former ally of Carl, hence she bans keeping walkers for show, knowing the dangers they bring. This is a very good finish to the walking dead comic series, the world as become a more peaceful place to live. The artwork is black & white, but very detailed and well drawn. at the rear of the book the writer, writes down his personal thoughts about the series ending. No editorial errors, enjoyed it.

Ended on a high note.

Sad that the series ended. Been reading since 2004 non-stop and now.. now I guess I'll pick up something else to read.

The last 2 issues or so, were so good. I really really liked them.

And I hate to tell you that I told you so, but I told you so. Kirkman himself said there wasn't any road to go forward to. No room left for any other thing to happen. He pretty much told us every possible scenario and then some, all these years.

The last 10 issues or so were going downhill, ever since after the Whisperers things got boring for me and things got repetitive and whatnot, for one reason or another, I didn't like what the series had become, even though I kept reading and kept bitching about it.

And even though I was about to stop, I said ok give it 3 or 4 issues and then if nothing happens you put it down and read a bunch of them whenever there's a sale or something. But then Rick got shot, so I couldn't stop reading now.

And now this... Even after reading what Kirkman said in his last issue after the letters, that who's gonna be the main character now that Rick's gone and he pretty much said that it was gonna be Negan.

Well, that made me happy and I was all ready and shit to start on a new adventure with him, but yeah, no. He did everything he could for us not to get spoiled about the end.

And even though I would love to read more about Negan, I'm glad he ended it now and in that way.

Love this series mainly for keeping me company every month since 2004 and liking and hating characters and caring and being all fuck you at the end and all that shit.

Thank you Kirkman!

Abrupt, but masterfully crafted ending of one of the best series of all time. This title opened the gate of the comic book world for me and I thank you, Kirkman, for the beautiful journey. Your last words really helped seal my convinction that this is the best ending possible for the series, the world and the characters. Hoping for the next great book by R.Kirkman!

I do not normally write reviews for single issues of a comic book series but this is a landmark issue. Without giving anything away, the best part of this was that I don’t believe anyone saw this coming. Thanks so much Robert Kirkman, what a treat!

This is a review of the entire series.

Rick Grimes is a strong-willed deputy who missed the end of the world because he was in a coma for a month after getting shot in the line of duty. Shaken, starving and confused, Rick escapes the horror of the abandoned hospital only to be met with something far more terrible. Not only has the world ended, but the dead have learned to walk and to kill without mercy. After learning that his wife and son have fled to Atlanta from a single survivor and his son, Rick goes on a journey to reunite with his family and search for more survivors.

Rick quickly has to come to terms with the fact that the world has ended and only a select few survived. The dead have risen from their graves and they prey on the living. In a world where every minute feels like hours, where there's no such thing as law and order, where finding a small meal is a tremendous task, the walking dead are quite possibly the least threatening thing for the survivors to have on their breaking minds. Humanity is pushed to the brink of destruction, forcing them to embrace their cruel and primal nature in order to survive. Sometimes you have to be more concerned about who you let into your community so they don't kill you in your sleep and steal everything you once cared about. Rick has no choice but to abandon the ways of law and order that he's upheld as an officer for so long in order to protect the few loved ones he has left. He has to become a monster to protect his crew or risk being devoured by those who became more monstrous than him and even the walking dead.

Despite zombies running the world and having the series named after them, what really sets this series apart from the average zombie apocalypse tale is the focus on realism and the daily struggles, flaws and depth of the characters. There's plenty of badass zombie killing action, but the action often takes a back seat to give the characters plenty of times to share their extremely tragic yet endearing stories, grow through mutual suffering and learn to adapt to a world that has left them to die. Even after the world has ended, many people still can't see eye to eye. They turn on each other and kill each other when they should come together. Others form alliances in spite of their differences and try to rebuild over the corpse of everything that was lost. The daily human drama and conflict is more intense than any monster apocalypse could hope to be.

We watch Rick struggle to balance his old moral code with the many necessary evils he has to commit in order to survive and make the world a better place for the ones he holds close. We watch people like Glen, Dale and Maggie attempt to find love in spite of having every reason to be filled with fear, hate and self-loathing. Characters like Michonne have to learn how to forgive themselves and convince themselves they deserve to be loved despite all the blood on their hands. We watch the weak like Carl and Andrea become strong and sometimes the strong become evil like The Governor. Even monsters like the wicked yet oddly lovable Negan are given the chance to find new ways of redeeming themselves by struggling alongside the other survivors that have all been changed by the horrors of the fallen world.

The pacing is extremely slow and I can understand why that may be a turnoff for a lot of people, but I eventually learned to enjoy watching the characters grow, overcome their trauma, find meaning in life and learn to love again. The characters are forced to do many terrible things to survive and it haunts them every waking moment. The ways they overcome these regrets is very realistic, human and hopeful. The slow pacing really gives the feeling that we're living beside these people. The way every tiny detail of their lives and who they are is explored makes them feel very real and believable.

When I first started reading the series, I wasn't expecting it to have such an uplifting ending. It seemed so bleak and nihilistic for a long time and things would go horribly wrong even when they seemed to be going so well, but the finale channels all the pain, suffering and betrayal of the previous volumes and tops it off with a very touching and inspiring finish. This was never a story about hopelessness. It's about learning to appreciate the little things, learning to forgive yourself and learning to move on even when it's hard. When everything seems lost there's always more to be found, even when we believe otherwise because we convince ourselves that we don't deserve to be happy ever again. Instead of dwelling on what was lost, strive to try and make things better than they were before.

I've never been a huge fan of zombie apocalypse stories, but The Walking Dead had enough heart and strong social commentary to make me stick by the characters until the end and I enjoyed every moment of their long trial.

And that’s the end!

Not everything is resolved in this final issue but it does feel like an appropriate and satisfying ending. The writing and artwork were both skilfully executed and you can tell that a lot of time and care went into this. I’ll miss The Walking Dead but I think Kirkman did the right thing to end it at this time and in this way.

Cheers Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard for the years of work you put into this, you did a fantastic job!

Wow...after 16 years, it’s hard to believe that this is the end. I’m a mix of emotions, but Kirkman’s 6 page essay in the back makes me feel like this is the best ending we could have possibly had.

A decade of reading this title has come to and end.

The End. Issue #193 brings to an end a decade of reading this series 😱😭⁣

Ten years ago as series one of #TheWalkingDead TV show aired (and I was fully hooked) I learned it was based on a comic book series that had started in 2003 and was still running. Before series two started I had entered a new world of independent comics and trade paperbacks (which collect five monthly comics into a magazine omnibus). I discovered comic shops, made dozens of comic reading friends and became a profilic reader of many #imagecomics titles. ⁣

When I started part-time uni four years ago I had to drop some hobbies and only continued with Saga and TWD. I mostly read them monthly as they were issued but last summer year was a hard “school” year and I settled down to catch up expecting to have dozens to work through but was shocked to find there was only ten and to realise Kirkman had dramatically ended the series with no warning. It’s been a rollercoaster read and I’m genuinely shook to realise it’s been ten years since I started this series.

Can't believe I've just read the last ever issue! I was a late starter to the comic books, only reading them because I loved the TV series so much, but I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed them. I loved the different story arcs and the way the characters panned out. I'll miss them but it was a satisfying fitting ending to this series

Like many I'm puzzled and disappointed. Being told this series would go on for years and years- only to get an abrupt end after such an underwhelming Rick death. I was glad to see how everyone turned out- Carl and Sophia, Michonne, Eugene, and Jesus and Aaron. Old man Carl...
