Pretty Things

TY:

Pretty Thing--the moment Liam McKinney first uttered those words will be embedded in my mind forever.

He's mysterious, intriguing...and off-limits since he's my father's friend.

Easier said than done.

The moment I laid eyes on the man with the dark eyes and intense stare, he awoke a primal hunger within me unlike anything I'd ever experienced before. For some time, I've been confused about my attraction toward men, but there's no confusion when I look at him--just pure, unfettered desire to feel his body against mine, taste his flesh, breathe in his scent.

So many things an experienced man like Liam could show me.

But I don't just want to sate my desire for his body--the physique of a Titan, those abs practically chiseled from stone, and one particular challenge that looks more than slightly intimidating...Yes, I want all that, but also so much more. To know everything about him. There's something behind the facade he presents to the world. Sometimes, it's as though I'm offered a glimpse behind the smokescreen--to who he really is. Yet it's tricky to know the real Liam when he's determined to keep his secrets.

I assumed he had a dark past.

But I didn't realize he hadn't left it behind and that I'd wind up roped into it--into a dangerous world so different from the one I've spent most my life living.

It's a world of secrets, deception, and peril.

I quickly discover there's a price to being with Liam McKinney.

But no price is too great when the reward is being the man in his arms and his heart.

Being his very own Pretty Thing.

*Pretty Things features two men who can't get enough of each other, action/adventure involving secret government agencies and nefarious conspiracies, and sexy shenanigans that'll make it impossible for you to forget you're in a Devon McCormack novel. The book contains references to suicidal ideation and scenes of peril that could act as triggers for some readers.

Devon McCormack grew up in the Georgia suburbs with his two younger brothers and an older sister. At a very young age, he spun tales the old fashioned way, lying to anyone and everyone he encountered. He claimed he was an orphan. He claimed to be a king from another planet. He claimed to have supernatural powers. He has since harnessed this penchant for tall tales by crafting worlds and characters that allow him to live out whatever fantasy he chooses. Devon is an out and proud queer man living in Atlanta, Georgia.

Devon's body of work ranges from erotica to young adult, so readers should check the synopses of his books before purchasing so that they know what they're getting into.

DNF @ 53% I tried so hard to get into this book. I held on over 4 days of reading and was still barely past 50%. The sex was just starting to get a tad kinky but the story and the characters just could not hold my attention.

I hope Liam and Ty get their HEA but I'll never know.

So I’m at 26% and realized I still had like 4 hours of reading to do so I stopped. I figured if I’m not invested yet, I’m not going to be. Hopefully Loam and Ty get their HEA but I won’t be reading about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

I liked some of the story and I found fault with much of it that I just didn't think was believable or even remotely possible. Liam spent unnecessary time trying to not feel anything for Ty using the excuse that "his father is my friend." Well, to start with Liams friend was Ty's stepfather who had a boyfriend of his own, so I really don't think he would have been all that upset that his adult son had a boyfriend also... and secondly even though Liam was older, they were both adults. We knew by the second to third chapter that Liam had some secret past that he was trying to avoid running into but that didn't work out very well. Can't say much about it as that was the majority of the rest of the book...but I can't imagine any agency allowing Ty to be any part of this scheme. Two weeks alone running from Liam's past sees "insta-lust" growing into "insta-you're-my-soulmate-but-I-can't-say-that-to-you-because-I'm-unworthy". The sex scenes are a little jarring when taking them in against the "James Bond plot". So... good in some places and unbelievable in others. The strangest part is...it made me keep reading.

Was just ok for me

Ok so first let me say I love this author and just about everything he writes. I was really looking forward to Ty and Liams story after reading the BFF series. Unfortunately this didnt wow me like I was hoping for. I really didn't like the whole government operative plot and it dominated the story. I was bored with it and found myself skimming parts of it to get to the romance, which was great! When we got the Ty and Liam relationship times, the story really worked for me. I will definitely read their next book, because Devon is still a one click author for me! This story and I just didn't mesh completely.

Ty’s story! Yes!!! Oh, how I’ve looked forward to reading this book! And it totally went pretty much the opposite way than I expected. It’s a trait of Devon McCormack’s books I absolutely love – it’s never predictable. Yes, you get a father’s best friend romance – so pretty similar to Ty’s father Eric’s story – uh, well, no. It utterly different and unique and just so much more.

It’s fun, flirty, alright, at times at least, but it’s mostly a story that packs a punch you won’t see coming. Intense, heart-wrenching, emotional and intriguing. Oh, and let’s not forget explosive chemistry…

There’s intrigue, some drama, even mystery surrounding Liam’s secretive past and one hot as hell romance building between two men – one of those only now coming to terms with his bisexuality. It’s an adventure for sure, a bumpy road full of little twists and turns that of course includes some of those characteristic scorching scenes by Mr. McCormack.

The best of it all – there will be more of Ty and Liam very soon! I seriously cannot wait! Oh, and while this is a total standalone: If you haven’t read the BFF series yet about Ty’s father and his (Ty’s) best friend – what the hell are you waiting for??

"As was my awareness that from that moment forward, my life would never be the same." ~Ty

So, after reading the BFF trilogy, and enjoying Jesse and Eric's love affair, I was all ready for Ty and Liam's flirtation to soar. And then I got caught up in Ty's fantasy of Ex Files and conspiracy theories. WTELF!!! This came at me out of left field and wow!!! I knew Liam was mysterious, but wow Devon, you really took on another role with this book.

"Apparently, you really do have a thing for trouble." ~ Liam
"I have a thing for whatever package you come in." ~Ty

"Ty, every time I look at you, I'm spellbound. How do you fall right into something so foreign from everything you've ever known?"

"Oh, Ty. You’ve taken my soul and broken it into a million pieces, and I don't even wanna put them back together."

I am in a state of, holy hell and you got to be kidding me and I get MORE of these guys!?! This one had me all tied up, pun intended. Liam and Ty were just perfect together. I liked the push/pull of their relationship and I adore the way Devon brought them together. The thrill, the suspense, the mystery, the whole package of this story was so different than BFF that I am kind of glad it didn't follow those rules.

Yes, I got the age gap, and the whole dark, troubling background. I also got to see Ty fight for what he wanted and that was Liam, wholly and souly.

Whoa!! Guys, I *loved* this entire gritty, sexy, emotional, intense, angsty, hot AF, surprising, and utterly amazing book. IMO one of the best from Devon McCormack to date - and that's saying something, considering how much I enjoy his work. Pretty Things is the story of Ty and Liam, and if you read the BFF trilogy (and if you haven't, what the heck are you waiting for?) you know that Liam is Ty's father's best friend. This story is full of secrets and surprises, twists and turns, danger and suspense.. and one hot as hell romance heating up between the two men. Ty and Liam's road is difficult and uncertain, at times seems impossible, and their HEA is undeniably earned, with how hard they have to fight for it. Going into this book, I was so excited for Ty and sooo curious about Liam, who is quite the enigma when we meet him in Eric's books. I could not wait to find out his secrets, and DAMN. And that's all I am going to say about that, because read it. So much better that way, amirite? ;)

I love the connection Ty and Liam can't deny, no matter how hard they ( *cough* Liam *cough* ) try to. They are in a similar mindset at the beginning, even though they seem worlds away from each other in where they are in their lives. Both men are feeling lost and uncertain what to do next, and I truly enjoyed the character growth that was so clear over the course of the book in both. I love that they take time to get to know each other before things really progress. It is nice to see Ty experience a little of what Eric and Jesse felt, too, so that he could better understand them. I looooved getting to know Liam's former team, too - some great side characters! And while there are some seriously heartbreaking moments (and some really harrowing ones) towards the end that had me crying my eyes out and cursing Devon McCormack's name (I still <3 you though), I loved the ending to this book SO MUCH and finished with a huge smile on my face. Sure, my emotions were all over the darn map and I stared into space for a while asking myself "what even is life" a few times, but still smiling. What can I say? Book hangover. It's a thing.

Pretty Things is one book this year you do not want to miss! The love is swoony (but don't tell Liam that), the sex is HOT, the danger palpable, and the emotions run high - what more could you want? And Devon McCormack absolutely nails the [redacted] plot line. Nails. It. But underneath all the action and suspense and romance, this story is also about healing and finding yourself, even if that might look a lot different than you may have imagined. It is about finding the one who makes you whole and learning how to live in the light. And it is a story about two men who seem like they would never ever work, but complete each other in ways they never even imagined were possible. All the stars from this reader.

Traduzione resa italiana ottime.

I will start by saying I love Devon McCormack's writing. I've enjoyed every book I've read by him so far. Including this one. However, I did get a little bored somewhere in the middle. But the story picked back up for me later.
This book is Ty and Liam's love story. We are introduced to Ty in McCormack's BFF series. I think you could read this by itself, but it's best to read the BFF series first in my opinion. That way you get to know Ty a little better as well as the characters from the BFF series who do make an appearance in this book. Although minor. Liam is also in the last book of the BFF series.
Liam is a tough character to read in the beginning. And I loved Ty's efforts of trying to seduce him. One evening out, as friends, they get jumped by some masked men. I never saw this part of the story coming. This is when we get to see why Liam is the way he is. There is some FBI type stuff if this book. Which I'm usually good with. But part of that story lulled for me a bit. It all comes together in the end though. And I just loved Ty and Liam's story so much. I'm looking forward to see where their relationship goes in McCormacks next book.

The only choice.

The first half was an exceptionally slow build. The romantic tension was perfect, but it needed more action to balance things. The book really started in Chicago, on the way out of the club. After that the pacing was great.

I give this one 4.5/5.
4 for the first half, 5 for the second.

Not my favorite McCormack book. Intro third or so simple romance tropes (age difference, friend of family, etc.) Pleasant but not engaging to me. Action picked up in the middle, but just never felt much tension.

Yes! Finally Liam and Ty's story! I have been looking forward to their story since we got the first hints of what was to come in the BFF series.

I wasn't expecting their journey to love to be so fast-paced action! We learn so much more about Liam's past, what "work" he really retired from, and how it's coming back to him in the present. I really loved the action and the characters from Liam's group.

And then there's Liam and Ty. Ty, who was questioning his sexuality but knows what he wants now and knows that he wants Liam. And then there's Liam - who worries that Ty is too young for him, too innocent and naive of all the darkness from Liam's past, but Liam still wants him, too. Their chemistry and connection was just fire.

Can't wait for more with these guys! I'm guessing their next story will continue some elements from this one, although Liam and Ty are in a very good spot when this story ends. I enjoy Devon's books and look forward to his next one!

I started getting bored waiting for something to happen, and listening to Liam thinking about Ty seemed like a lot of whining. Yucked out when The chemistry between the two was palpable, but something about these two didn't feel real and I didn't connect with them.

This book made me mad! It was like the Eric and Jesse story 2.0 with spies! Ty was such a great character in the previous series. Even though I tolerated the series and came to love the characters because their stories ran over 3 books (unnecessarily so). I still wanted to know how things go with Ty. But Liam felt robotic almost. I could not understand why Ty kept throwing himself at him!

Ugh last one I read by the author, I don’t think I get his style.

DNF at 50%

I really tried but it was getting painful to read. As more characters are introduced, the plot becomes harder to follow and the dialogue becomes childish especially for the age of the older MMC. There were too many conversations that pulled me out of the story repeatedly, and I found myself doom scrolling on TikTok to avoid reading it.

I’m not sure what happened but it wasn’t fleshed out enough for me to continue reading.

First and foremost, TRIGGERS! There are some very rough scenes in this book. Kidnapping, attempted kidnapping, forced fighting scenes, forced suicide attempts, discussions of severe torture and dismemberment, murder and such. If any of this is a trigger for you, please be careful.
This book went in a direction I was not….ready for? I knew it was going to be angsty or something, because it’s Devon. Lol. And after everything with Eric and Jesse, and eventually Ty and parts of his life, I knew it was going to be emotional and that there was going to be a lot of intense moments. I did get something kind of right with this book, though. Something about Liam, from the moment I first ‘met’ him, I knew he was into some secretive stuff. I knew it had to be some government thing or assassin type person. Something. He was TOO secretive and a bit shady. Not in a bad way, and now I know why. This book is mega intense and very, very good and I really loved the way it played out. So suspenseful.
We get to learn a lot more about Ty in this book as well. I won’t lie. I bawled for both he and Liam in this. Wow. Ty has had a lot of changes come in his life lately. With Jesse and Eric, coming out himself, a new career change and going to school for it, and now, his intense connection with Liam. It’s been a lot to take in. To the point, Ty is kind of lost in himself. Almost doubting himself, hoping he hasn’t screwed up his life. Not about Liam, but Liam frustrates the crap out of him. He is almost positive Liam is attracted to him, but he constantly puts up walls and pulls away. After finally being able to give Liam his number and letting him make the next move, it’s about a year before they finally, really connect. But Liam is adamant. Only as friends. Doesn’t stop Ty from trying. One on fateful night, Ty’s world is turned upside down as he and Liam are arguing. Someone is trying to kidnap them. Thankfully, Liam beats the tar out of the guys, with a bit of help from Ty before he’s drugged. Liam gets them to safety, but he knows something severe is up. And it’s time to spill the secrets he’s been so closely guarding. Ty is thrust into a world he never knew. A part of him feels naive and stupid, but he’s trying to cope with it all. It helps as Liam is opening up to him more. But it’s taken a lot of hurt feelings to get there. They try to start something, but agree it would be better to get more serious if they get out of danger. They can’t stop the chemistry between them, though. But before they can even get the chance to get out of danger, they are fighting for their lives. And this time, they may not get free.
You always see this government shows or movies, like Bourne or Bond etc, and think it’s just this magical thing where the good guys get the bad guys and poof, life goes on. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really work that way. And Ty soon found out. In ways he didn’t want to know. The more information Liam gave him about what was going on, especially when his old team showed up, the more it took for Ty to wrap his head around everything. It’s bad enough, his own life, he felt, was a mess, but now it really was. And the more they are together, the more Liam is opening up to him about his past. It’s heartbreaking and wonderful at the same time. Ty is more than sympathetic about Liam’s past, but the more he opens up, the more Ty feels like Liam is trusting him and that there could actually be something between them. There’s one moment in the book, towards the end, where everything between them just comes together. And it will make you cry at the beauty of it. But it takes a lot to get there.
I understood Liam’s point of view with Ty. In his line of work, it’s dangerous to get too close to anyone. And the first time in a long time that he even remotely let an inch of his guard down, something bad does happen. The guilt he feels over everything that is happening to Ty, almost knocks him to his knees. And yet Ty keeps insisting on something between them. He wants it more than he wants to breathe. He has never felt for anyone what he feels for Ty. Ever. But look at what his life has put Ty through. At least that’s what he thinks. It’s such a catch-22. You’re damned if you don’t and damned if you do.
I’m still quite shocked in how this storyline went. I know I shouldn’t be, all things considered. But it is quite a story. I loved every page.

Hi lettrici e lettori Sale e Pepe

Let me start by saying I am a fan of Devon McCormack’s writing. I LOVED the BFF series (solid 5 stars) and I have also enjoyed the books he co-wrote with Riley Hart. But I can’t say I loved this book (3.5 stars) even though I wanted to.

First the great: The sex scenes were hot. I am glad that the author chose to interject some comic relief in the form of Liam’s team, and their interactions. It was a really good break amongst the otherwise heavy and dark themes. The complexity of the Liam’s and Ty’s characters, both individually and as a couple, was great!! Love story was poignant. Larger than life storyline that had sooooo much potential! These great things are part of the reason the book was a disappointment. There was too much covered in a short amount of time.

Now the not so great: Ty was a complex character, but in an attempt to make him seem mature and unaffected, he almost came across as flip. I would have preferred more internal dialogue where Ty acknowledged the gravity of the situation, but made a decision to compartmentalize his feelings in order to help Liam. The overall tempo was off putting. I would say the romance was a slow burn, if by slow burn you mean the speed at which something cooks in a crockpot on the low setting. The extended game of cat and mouse, and subsequent begging by Ty, became annoying. The sexy begging that made its way into their bedroom shenanigans after they became a couple-hot. The “please date me” begging-not so much. At some point Ty went from persistent and sardonic to desperate and self denigrating. But once the MCs became a couple, we saw the story do from 1st to 5th gear in 2.5 seconds. And if the wait for the physical relationship wasn’t excruciating enough, there was the wait for the kiss....sorry, I was watching my grass grow. The after the backstory, Liam’s reticence to kiss Ty made complete sense, but the constant, “I want to and he wants me to, but I won’t” was unnecessary. I would have preferred the conflict be more “he wants me to, but I can’t”. Then the story rushed into, meet parents, (as a couple), reveal relationship, get kidnapped, resolve issue, and become martial arts student within the span of three chapters, wow!

Overall: I really like these characters and I am invested in them. But this book did not do them justice. This story was too big for the one book. I would like to see their story continue in order to see Ty resolve some of his internal struggles re: identity. Yes he became more comfortable with his sexual orientation, but the rushed resolution left you wondering how he felt in his professional life. It would be nice to see dialogue with dad and Jesse re: his ability to empathize with their love story after falling in love with Liam. I would also like to see Ty address his PTSD.

«Dio stesso dovrà strapparti dalle mie braccia,» sussurrai all’orecchio di Ty.
