The story was told through alternating narration between Melany and Artlond, as well as a few random other characters to help with the overall world building. I will say that at times Melany did seem very immature, more a young teen/kid than a 17 year old almost woman, especially when dealing with her family situation and bickering with her brothers. It was hard to connect to her as a character for me but I am sure others will love her spunk. Some of the slang/insults she used seemed out-dated (for example buttweed and dweeb) but then I discovered that the story was set in 1998 so it made more sense overall.

My favorite character was Aratlond, the misplaced Elf. He was dropped out of his realm, which had been full of magic and battles, into the modern world he knows nothing about. He was curious and resilient, able to go with the flow even while completely in over his head. It was fun to see the 2000 year old elf try and figure out the complicated and dangerous world of high school.

I did struggle getting into the story, it was very slow building to get to the actual plot, it was basically an info dumping with some repetitious information and then daily life details before anything really exciting happened so I kept finding my attention slipping.

Overall this was a really interesting concept with magic portals, different races and realms. I think this would be an entertaining read for anyone who loves epic fantasy and different realms.

Reviewer’s Note: I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

I waited a day to review this book in an attempt to gather my thoughts, but I feel just as conflicted before. I will state, though, that I care for the characters and therefore, would be interested in reading book 2 to see their journey and find out how the war plays out.

This book is written from various perspectives, so I recommend readers to pay attention to the graphics the author inserted; each graphic is associated with a specific character based off their personality and/or attributes. I personally did not mind there being several perspectives used throughout the book, but occasionally it seemed like it switched randomly and, slightly, took the reader away from the main plot.

I also thought the book was a little slow throughout the first half; it felt drawn out and almost as if there was not much plot in mind. However, this section did serve as a method of character development and worldbuilding. This section also seemed to serve the purpose of creating foundations for the romantic relationships.

I would definitely like to see more of the non-Earth realm, but I do wonder what possible role Chance and Megan can play in the second book once the main battle of the war breaks out.

After reading this book, I wanted to write and post this review to share my honest experiences toward the story.

What an interesting concept. I absolutely loved the premise of this story and it had an exciting beginning. However, the story itself progressed very slowly from there, up until the middle of the book, and continuing until the very last page. This was an enjoyable read for me, and the incorporation of real life events and actual instances that took place during this time was phenomenal. Definitely a must for anyone who likes YA fantasy

I wanted to like this more than I did - it was a good story but with some tighter editing I think it could have been better. This book is very much what I call "old school fantasy" where detailed descriptions are used - so if you like your story to move quicker than this might not be for you.

The characters were well written. Melanie was occasionally childish but not outside of a 17 yo behaviour. I really enjoyed the interactions between the characters and the deep worldbuilding. I just wish the story pace had been quicker.

This has the potential to be a good story but it's incredibly slow. Nothing of interest really happens for a long time and it's hard to maintain interest. The character development is pretty good and it could lead to a great second book.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

While I love YA fantasy/paranormal books, I don’t typically choose elves or books with other realms. I did really enjoy this one and glad I got to read it! I felt like the book skipped around quiet a bit; however, the background provided enhanced the last part of the story. I liked all the main characters and am satisfied with the choices they made (don’t want to spoil it by saying too much 😉). I’m looking forward to seeing what challenges await Aratlond, Hisime, Chance, Jordan, and Melany in the next book!

Thank you to the author for a free copy in exchange for an honest review!
