The Bizarre Blades #1

The Jigsaw Blade

Rate this book

He always dreamed of becoming a champion. But finding a mythical sword could cut his life short…

Finn Featherstone longs to trade in his paintbrush for a legendary Bizarre Blade. One day, after heroically rescuing a young girl and coming face-to-face with his sword-fighting idol, he is shocked to learn he is being drafted as a foot soldier. If that wasn’t bad enough, a few days later the army caravan he is apart of is attacked by a pack of sabertooth tigers. While trying to survive, Finn finds himself crashing through the ice where he mistakenly discovers a magical blade of his very own.

Introduced to a world of champions jealous of his random find, Finn struggles to master his sword’s sludge-spitting bad attitude. Surrounded by dubious allies, he must somehow find the courage to battle the prehistoric creatures that roam the land as well as trying to survive the freezing elements. And when a traitor takes down Finn’s fellow champions, the former painter must tame his angsty weapon in a hurry if he has any hope of winning the fight of his life.

Can Finn command his deranged blade before his dreams of glory come to a bloody end?

The Jigsaw Blade is the first book in the refreshingly unique Bizarre Blades sword and sorcery fantasy series. If you like plucky heroes, wacky humor, and ferocious prehistoric creatures, then you’ll love Stevie Collier’s swashbuckling tale.

Stevie Collier is an International Bestselling Author who writes highly unique... and sometimes strange Fantasy Novels! You won't find a similar style like his anywhere else!

When he isn't writing dark and high fantasy, you can find Stevie at the gym pumping iron or running with his spoiled white Siberian Husk named Spartacus.

He also loves watching movies (Horror, Action, and Comedy) along with a few anime series. Not to mention that he is also an avid gamer! (Currently dying millions of times playing Sekiro... he's a glutton for punishment lol)

He grew up with way too many creative ideas in his head. In his opinion, they were meant to be drawn but... Stevie doesn't know how to draw. That is why he writes! Let him draw a picture for you in your mind.

Wow, what an exciting world and adventure!

The Jigsaw Blade by Stevie Collier is unique, fast paced, fantasy adventure that hooked me from page one! This world is so crazy good! Dinosaurs, magical creatures, people are in a caste system notable by hair color (green, blue, red, etc), and more fascinating and bizarre society norms. There are ancient weapons that have magical powers that are given to the one the sword bonds to. This is about a young teen that accidental comes across one of the magical swords and his life and challenges after finding it. Many are not happy a young boy finds it and that he is not a worthy warrior. Great story with lots of adventure, creatures, great fantasy, fascinating imagination, and thrilling situations. Can't wait to read book two!

Fun idea, writing quality and main character fall flat

I think the author confused how 18 year olds act with how 12 year olds do. Fun premise, but main character is way too dull, stupid and uninteresting.

THIS IS A MUST READ!!!!

The Jigsaw Blade is unlike any fantasy novel I have ever read, and has set a new standard for me in the genre. When I saw a fantasy book containing dinosaurs I was immediately curious and was not disappointed! Mr Collier weaves these creatures into the story in such a way that makes them feel like a completely natural, and badass, part of the world he has built. The characters are well developed and complex, and the wide variety of personalities makes for some truly entertaining dialogue--particularly between Finn and Jade!

The most standout aspect of the story, though, is the wonderful humor that is incorporated throughout. Never before have I laughed out loud (and gotten strange stares in public while doing so) this many times while reading a fantasy novel. The author flows from intense dinosaur action scenes, to pulling at your heartstrings, to hilarious dialogue without missing a beat. Now the only problem is figuring out what to do with myself while I wait for the next book...

This was the first Stevie Collier book I have completed. I did begin reading the first book of his previous trilogy “The Dark Assassin” , and have since picked it up again based on the strength of Jigsaw Blade, the first in his new 5 book series The Bizarre Blades.

Without giving too much away, Jigsaw Blade follows the coming of age story of Finn Featherstone, who more or less discovers that he was chosen by one of the aforementioned Bizarre Blades, to wield it as a Champion. This leads to a great deal of trials for our hero due to the many envious parties that feel he is unworthy of such an honour, as well as the great responsibility of being a Champion and wielding a blade.

This is where the tropes end. Throw everything else about conventional Fantasy out the window. Stevie Collier is not a conventional author . He has an eccentric sense of humor, which is apparent from the very beginning of this absolutely hilarious novel that actually had me hysterical all the way through.

Set in a world inhabited by Dinosaurs and other Prehistoric beasts, the book is vividly and beautifully described. Much of the humor resides in the fact that Finn is an obsessive Bizarre Blade fan. Prior to receiving one, he enthuses over the legendary swords much the way we would about celebrities and popular culture. The Blades themselves are often extremely specific in their actual abilities, many of which are described as being quite useless. Finn’s blade possesses an anthropomorphic charm, that adds to some fantastic scenes dealing with Finn’s bonding with his weapon.

While it’s quite possible to compare Stevie’s book to Nicholas Eames’ Kings of the Wyld, and perhaps some of Terry Pratchett’s work, I think it’s necessary to suggest that this is an adult book despite the YA coming of age theme. Stevie’s humor can get risqué at times, and the book often takes quite dark and violent turns with some very graphic imagery.

Stevie Collier’s Jigsaw Blade is the perfect novel for those looking for something truly different. It definitely offers something for every type of Fantasy Fan, and it’s far and away one of my favorite books of the last year. Stevie Is finding his voice as a Fantasy Author to watch for. This book was massively entertaining and a joy to read. Bring on Finn’s next adventure!

My name is Finn Featherstone. I live in the frozen Kingdom of Shimoshimo and all I’ve ever dreamed of is being Finn the Fantastic, A Champion and wielder of a Bizarre Blade. Who would’ve thought it could truly happen?
This book had some of everything….laughter, suspense, and action. The characters are unforgettable.
You never know from one page to the next, what is going to happen. It was hard for me to put down.
I can’t wait for the next adventure.

Whow that was one great ride.

First i will start with what i didn't like and that is first part of the book around 30% it was not bad it was too fast and not paced correctly for me, one thing happen with Fin then another and so on it felt rushed its 30 % of the book but it still felt rushed .
But all of that changed after that story started to get interesting, pacing was top notch, Fin got more fleshed out i will not spoil who his companions where because for the better part of first half of the book its only Fin alone.

So lets start:
World-building : First this world has dinosaurs and yeh they are great i love that Stevie Collier
did his research about them and added feathers to them. World is wast we seen two kingdoms so far but there are more of them . Both of them are really different one is harsh and cold so people are harsh and well indifferent to one another and they use dinosaurs as tools , second kingdom is worm and feels eastern and they are kind to dinosaurs that they use .

Characters: So Finn Featherstone is our main hero he is a painter living in ShimoShimo the cold country and he dose not like it how people are treated and well basically he is a nice guy but weak and small one thing lets to another and he goes on journey that end disastrously and all changes for him. Then without spoiling we have a angry companion he dose not like our Fin for various and obvious reasons and then we have intelligent but not all in the head kindhearted but cold oh i dont know how to describe second companion but you will love him/her :)
Last we have bizzarre blades first hey are awesome second we dont know much about them but that they intelligent kinda and they have different ability's like one blade called Combustion blade well blades abilities are combustion.... yeh combustion it can combust anything even his owner if you annoy it .

Overall i really like it but just for begging i cant give this book 5 starts, but the rest of the book is 5 star material its fun its action packed it has great characterization you will love champions and blade interactions the new abilities that are introduced and new challenges that Fin has to overtake. I will wait for the second book and will drop all that i am reading to read a squeal.

The Jigsaw Blade is a unique sword and sorcery tale. It's a coming-of-age Young Adult/New Adult crossover. It's action-packed and will keep you turning the pages! The tongue-in-cheek humor reminds me of Roald Dahl books. I even laughed out loud a few times, which I don't do often. The gritty survival scenes reminded me of First Blood, which I watched as a teenager several times in English and in German, and is still the best of the Rambo movies.

Finn Featherstone is an unlikely hero and a very relatable character who grows through adversity. The story is written from his point of view. He is a painter apprentice to his father, acquainted with being bullied, and empathic to animals. He has a difficult relationship with his father, a big heart, and (like a typical teenager) a hero that he wants to emulate.

Bizarre Blades have unique magical abilities and are anthropomorphic. Each one is different and each one has a name. They also have side-effects. Only champions can wield Bizarre Blades and not all champions have them.

Themes that made this book notable were caring for animals (including the dangerous ones), acting courageously even when doing it afraid, learning to put differences aside to work as a team, and self-discovery.

There's graphic violence, which is not only reserved for the bad guys and monsters, but gets meted out on innocent people too. There's also some nudity. For these reasons, I think this book is better suited for older teenagers and up.

Trigger warning: graphic violence.
Disclosure: I received an ARC and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Very Enjoyable

So I’m thinking I’ve overrated this then I think no it was damn good. So which is it?

In parts it feels child like but you know what that actually adds to it in the end. The plot is great and can feel the anime vibes throughout add in dinos and it’s a great platform for story telling.

The MC seems a miserable git at the start but the author chooses a great way to build him up even if he doesn’t realise himself at first.

I’ll definitely tune in for the next instalment and hope it’s more of the same and we get to revisit Aerial 🤪 and Amber 😁

Finn Featherstone is not a Champion; he is a painter. That does not stop him from dreaming of one day becoming a Champion. In service to that dream, Finn knows everything there is to know about each named blade that has been discovered, as well as the individual who wields it. He has even drawn himself as a Champion. But he is not a Champion.

So I'm sure you can imagine his surprise when, on the day after rescuing a young girl, he finds himself face-to-face with his idol, none other than the sword-wielding Champion Bryce. He is even more surprised to learn that he is being drafted as a foot soldier. While not an ideal situation, Finn does make a friend pretty quickly - Saul - and tries to make the best of the situation. Finn didn't know that his time as a foot soldier would be very short, for it is only a few days later when the army caravan of which he is a part is attacked by a pack of smilodons - sabertooth tigers. The attack takes place near a bridge over an icy river, and during the attack, Finn falls into the icy waters.

Near to dying, Finn doesn't realize that he has discovered a named blade of his own. He also discovers, once he is nursed back to health, that though the blade has claimed Finn, another person had already claimed the blade - and he is not happy about Finn having it. Suddenly thrust into training to become a Champion - Finn finally gets to be a Champion! - Finn has to quickly master the new skills and gain the trust of his new blade - a stubborn blade with strong opinions - so he can battle the prehistoric creatures that roam the surrounding lands and defend his newfound friends and allies from the traitor in their midst.

In The Jigsaw Blade, Collier creates a vivid world in which humans live a Medieval-era type of life while dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals roam the lands. The world has two main kingdoms which are starkly different, not only in their weather but also in the way they treat those who live within the borders. In addition, the concept of the named Bizarre Blades, as well as the magic that helps discovers them, is very interesting, and I look forward to learning more about the various blades and what kind of powers they have. I don't know that I will end up being as big of a fan as Finn is, but I definitely want to learn at least a little bit about them all.

While there is a relatively large cast of characters, the majority of the book focuses on three: Finn, Jade, and Ariel. Oh, yeah. And Obsidian. As the protagonist, Finn obviously gets the most "screen time" and character development. He starts off as a young painter who works with his father - his mother died when Finn was small - though his relationship with his father is strained. They live in the frozen kingdom of Shimoshimo, a kingdom that does not treat its people well and treats the animals as tools to be used. Finn has an affinity with animals and can sense their feelings; Finn has a big heart and is often the target of bullies as a result. Overall, Finn has a fairly miserable life to start, often not realizing his own strength and ability, so it was nice to see Finn grow over the course of the book.

The characters of Jade and Ariel are...interesting, and they allow for some great interactions and experiences throughout the book. Jade is the one who was supposed to get the named blade that Finn claimed, and he doesn't hold back his anger at Finn for having "stolen" it from him, frequently vocalizing his desire for Finn to go away so he can finally get "his" blade. Ariel is a healer who speaks of herself in the third person. She frequently ends up being the peacemaker between Finn and Jade, especially once Finn starts standing up to Jade's bullying behavior. Though I normally don't like characters who speak of themselves in the third person, Collier makes it work for Ariel. I'm still not sure how or why, and I admit that my opinion may change as I continue the series, but I rather enjoyed her character here.

Finally, there's Obsidian, who is a somewhat domesticated microraptor. Due in part to Finn's empathic connection with animals, he and Obsidian develop a connection that was wonderful to read. That doesn't mean that Obsidian didn't get into trouble - or get Finn and the others into trouble - but some of the things Obsidian does certainly makes up for that. I definitely look forward to seeing Obisidion more in the next book.

For this book, I listened to the audiobook, which was narrated by Kevin Kemp. Kemp did a great job with the narration, and I definitely look forward to listening to him narrate other books in the series.

A saw with an attitude and a troll that doesn't quit!

This is a super fun adventure!! It's lighthearted and fun, and the funniest book I've read since Kings of the Wyld--as in, people are looking at me in the break room and asking why I'm laughing so much! The humor in this book is on the total other end of the spectrum of Eames' KOW since this is a coming of age book. It was totally off the wall, but kept me laughing the whole way through.

Collier has such a unique voice and sense of humor. I've honestly never read a book like this!

At times, it was intense with heart-pounding action scenes--dinosaurs, saber cats, chase scenes, and a badass magical weapon--with characters that pulled you in. And then, you're laughing out-loud at the incredible humor that is woven throughout!

There is such vivid imagery around the dinosaurs and the Bizarre Blades....!!! I absolutely LOVE the concept of the different blades--their powers and how they choose their champion! Absolutely brilliant!!

...and now I want one!

(Just not the growth one ;) That one was too funny!)

Great adventure! Cannot wait for the next!

A book brimming with personality, adventure and humour. Characters that could walk off the page, Bizarre Blades included. The Kingdom of Shimoshimo is vividly imagined with top-notch world building, easy-to-grasp social structures and a plethora of seriously awesome critters from dinosaurs to prehistoric megafauna (as a closet mammoth fanatic, I massively appreciated these gassy additions and certainly Jigsaw Blade is going to stick with me as a result!)

A body-honest coming-of-age, Finn is very much your typical nerdy teenager with a big heart (and absolutely zero physical prowess, although he does have a talent to *mostly* bounce) plunged into a hero role. Jigsaw Blade is more than your typical take on the ‘zero to hero’, refreshing and funny with those deft beautiful believable human touches that will make this memorable - both for the human and non-human cast of characters (Jewels! SO much love!)

I was incredibly lucky to receive an eARC of The Jigsaw Blade and am eagerly on release countdown to get that updated to a physical paperback - and snag a copy for my fellow dinosaur-addicted friend so we can shamelessly fangirl. Do judge this one by the stunning cover, although wrap up warm as it starts snowier than I expected from all that green!

As someone who reads her way through 200+ books in a year, it says something when I recognise 100% that a story will stick with me. Jewels and the Jigsaw Blade have definitely snuck their way into my heart. I’m looking forward to jumping into more of Collier’s other work and seeing where this series takes us.

Amazingly Refreshing

One of the most unique books I've read in a long time. I've been constantly looking for books/series to read while wearing other books or titles. This one has me hooked and not wanting the fun wild ride to end. Usually I go through countless titles after finishing a book series trying to find the right one that I can immerse myself in or take up the time til another book release. Instantly downloaded this after reading description & reviews. Definitely wasn't disappointed. Great characters, crazy unique setting, and a theme/plot that is as originally Refreshing as the author.

Manages to be serious without taking itself too seriously. It's fun, features plenty of action, and enough intrigue and antics to keep you guessing and laughing. An awesome blend of fantasy heroics, comedy, and a bit of coming of age.

Hilarious Dino filled Adventure!

I love the bizarre blades, the dinosaurs, the characters, and even the enemies are creative! I especially liked Jewel and Obsidian! I’m still wondering about that Smilodon... hmm 🤔 Well seems as if there is lots more fun to come, maybe some romance was hinted at.. and plenty of questing!

In this book we follow Finn Featherstone and how he ended up with a "Bizzare Blade" , Swords of Magical power that can transform it's user and give them different kinds of abilities depending on the blade.

Now the setting of this world is that of Medieval Europe but with Dinosaurs, yeah literally dinosaurs.

The Writing Style of the Author is pretty simple and Straightforward. The author really makes as laugh and stay hooked to the story till the end with its action packed sword fight scenes to dinosaur chasing scenes to making us laugh with weird situations and Character interaction and the character banter inside your head.

It is not a the book with most complex characters it's not a book with immense world building or it's not a book with philosophy or that makes you think a lot this book is just pure fun with likeable characters and some heartfelt moments.

Had no idea the main character was 11 years old at the start of this novel and that this was a book aimed at younger audiences, so a lot of what I didn't like about this book is explained away by both of those things.

However, that being said, it really is a flaw of the writing if it takes half a book for you to realise the protagonists age. He really doesn't act or sound like a pre teen and people certainly don't treat him that way. I just assumed he was 16 or 18 based on the way everyone treats him and the decisions he makes.

I gave up at the 48% mark. The book is enjoyable enough, but not really a book for adult audiences. There are just a few too many things that bugged me which I'll let go as I think this book was aimed at much younger audiences.

2.5 stars rounded to 3.

I'm truly intrigued by this series and will have to pick up the next one at least to see how it goes on. It's an interesting mix of fantasy and paleantology, in a world made up of prehistoric creatures of various shapes and sizes. Having just started researching dinosaurs I found this a really interesting premise and am keen to see more, and I hope Collier delves more deeply into the evolutionary trees and social behaviour of these extinct animals as well as his characters. It is a fascinating period of history, and I'm intrigued as to how the various creatures from different periods within the Mesozaic Era will be handled.

The plot is perhaps weaker than the setting but kicks along at a fast enough pace that you can often forget this and the characters stand out. I struggled at times with puerile humour more befitting of a twelve year old than the eighteen year old lead we are actually following, but whilst this occurred too many times for my comfort, it only tarnishes instead of marring the experience. The characters seem to go from one catastrophe to another and their reactions to these events make up much of the novel. I'd have liked to see more connection to the events, but I suspect much will come together in the next novel.

I did enjoy how the characters interacted with each other and how the relationships change and grow throughout. I felt more attached to some of the secondary characters than the lead, but this again perhaps comes down to some of the puerile humour displayed from his perspective. There is however a great deal of potential here and the characters really have started to build a life of their own.

So, I'm intrigued and I hope the series will only improve from this point onwards. I hope to see more of the prehistoric animals and various aspects joining together.

I love the term RIP-Roaring, and that's what this book is RIP-Roaring from the very start! Set in a world not unlike Marvel's Savage Land, it's a world of predatory dangerous a world where wanna be champions stride across it looking for Blades of tremendous power, the legendary Bizarre Blades, each possessing powers beyond belief waiting to share that power with the right Champion able to wield them.....
Enter Finn Featherstone an unassuming son of an artist, but with a proud heritage to his last name, Finn is a dreamer and his dreams are of Champions and Bizarre Blades. A danger ladened encounter with one of his champions sees Finn soon catapulted into an adventure far beyond his dreams, where before long he accidentally becomes the weilder of a powerful Bizarre blade..... but with with power comes danger, can Finn unlock the secrets of the Jigsaw Blade, before he is set upon by friend, foe and Dinosaurs alike?
This is a wonderful start to what I hope is going to be a continuing story, Finn is a great hero, unassuming and with very human frailties...... unsure of himself and yet willing to stand up for right or do the right thing, its fast paced and to say action packed is an understatement, although plot is not sacrificed at the alter of action and the narrative is tight and works well.... loved the supporting cast including some of the dinosaurs and it is a pleasure to watch Finn start his journey to becoming hopefully the best of all champions, he just has to live long enough to do so! If you are after an unusual, clever fantasy read then this is one I definitely recommend.

An epic read

An epic read, and I say that lightly, this book gave My Hero Academia vibes the whole way through it (If you don’t know what that is, tough, go watch it) lol.
No seriously, it has a similar story line, and quirks. Yes quirks, except it’s not the humans who have them it’s the blades.
Yung Fin, Featherston is a nobody, a painter’s son, who dreams of becoming a champion much like his hero Brice. (See, the similarities Deku Almight?)
One day Fin is walking home, with supplies for his father, when he sees a young girl climb up on the cage, A cage where criminals are locked up inside and dinosaurs, eat there fill. Seeing the girl fall into the cage Fin moves without thinking, he just moves.
Saved by his Hero, Brice, turns out Fin might just be destined to become one, or die in the process.

Fin is thrust head first in to danger after danger, the humorous ways he manages to survive is worth the read. I laughed so much. Such a fun read.

This book is so intriguing, the colour of once hair determines what part of society you belong to,
The world is vast and full of dinosaurs.
I really don’t want to spoil the book, its’ definitely one of my favourites so far this year. Add the anime vibes. It makes for a terrific read. i can’t wait to see Fin become an adult.

I highly. Highly recommend this book…. To any one, to any My Hero fans, and to anyone who simply likes a good adventure book filled with humour, and dinosaurs.

Spoiler free.

Wow. What can I say that hasn’t already been said. Like many I checked this out thinking it would be totally, tonally different and yet here I am sitting in a puddle of my own sweat and tears painting with my feet and wondering what mess my hero Finn is going to get into next. The swords are amazing, the characters growth is some of the best I’ve read in a long time. The world building is... unique. This was far funnier and smarter than it had any reason to be and the world is better because it exists.

PS I forgot to mention there are DINOSAURS. If you don’t like dinosaurs, fantasy, humor, or breathing you should probably skip this one but if you like being alive, green hair, and amazing storytelling check this out.

I picked up this book after reading Stevie’s first series. The Jigsaw Blade was totally different from what I was expecting after reading his first series. I was barely into the book when I realized that the book was different from his others. I continued to read and realized that it was too funny to put down. Through reading the book I could tell that Stevie really enjoyed and put all of his effort into making this book.

In my honest opinion I would recommend this book in a heartbeat to my friends. The book continued to bring laughter throughout the book. I can’t wait to read the next book and see where this book leads.
