When worlds collide, and things are rarely what they seem, there may be no one Vi can trust.
Having forsaken her crown for a chance to save her family, and the world, Vi Solaris washes up on the shores of Meru. She's wounded and barely alive. But Vi's fight for survival is only just beginning.
As a princess in a foreign land, everyone is after her.
The pirate queen Adela wants to sell her to the evil elfin'ra. The Twilight King wants to use her to settle an old score. And, perhaps most dangerous, is the scheming Lord of the Faithful who sees her as an opportunity to further consolidate his power.
The only path for Vi is forward. But she doesn't yet know if she's running toward salvation... or a brutal end to everything she loves.

Much better in my opinion to the first two. Failed Future managed to expand on a lot of the dynamics of the story from world building to expanding the magic system. I also think this benefited from being paced very well. Sometimes I feel like with these books there is an explosive beginning, then there is a big lag in the middle, and finally reach a turning point at the end.
I said in my last two reviews that I was very keen to see the direction the story was going to take and I very proud to say that Failed Future really proved through for me in that regards. There were also some great character moments throughout which is great to see because I haven't fully cared for them. However it was nice to see some struggle and not convenience. You kind of get the sense that there is no hope for this world and these characters. That ending though was a nice direction to go in. I mean I particularly like the trope that was used if done correctly and in the sense of this book, definitely the right call.
I am proud to see Elise Kova grow as an author. I might not always die hard love her books, but they are so much fun. Time to see how the story plays out in book four!
I received an e-ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. Review can also be found on *Milky Way of Books*
The third book of the series filled me with dread. Elise Kova is a master on creating worlds you want to explore and yet fear page after page for the characters' lives. I can't spoil much and I can only say that Vi and Taavin have a growing relationship and yet when I reached the end and REALIZED WHAT THE TRUTH WAS I cried and gasped. Elise had also said that she had the plot in her mind even from the beginning of Air Awakens so I can understand where the next book will move into.
Still, I dread to see how the series will end. And there's no feeling of losing interest in the future!
Vi has made it to the Crescent Continent - has made it to Taavin.
Back and forth they swung, a pendulum that never lost its momentum. The closer she got to him one moment, the further he felt the next.
She’s on a mission to rescue her father. I know and love Aldrik from Air Awakens, so I was eager to see this too.
I loved the exploration of the Crescent Continent. The morphi, the elfin - Elise has taken standard characters in fantasy and created a unique world for them.
My biggest problem was with the ending. I am nervous but excited to see how this plays out.
Read the Air Awakens series before this one. Seriously - if you like fantasy go read it.
Okay, that's my review. LOL. But honestly, I was blown away by how this book grabbed me with gobs of action right at the start and never let me go. By the time the first action sequence ends, you're already invested in what's happening and ready for more.
Of course, Kova brings Taavin in to this book, but he's actually there, like there, there. So we get to experience and know him like never before as well as see how Vi reacts to him in person, and I love how their relationship grows...
That was all good, but I honestly have to say, where Kova is taking this series is seriously amazing. She's said that she's had the concept for the series since before she wrote Air Awakens and that become VERY clear as the events in this book unfold. Be still my heart, I'm now thinking back through Air Awakens and seeing how she's slowly laid the groundwork for where she leaves this book. I'm loving speculating as to where she will take it next to ultimately defeat the nasty villains.
I received an early copy of this book for an honest review.
Despite being a huge fan of Elise Kova, I decided I would try and not be biased when diving into this review. I could easily reward it five stars if I wanted because I did enjoy it thoroughly as I do all of her books...but I won’t (future me: it’s still five stars 😂).
Just some important FYI: This is the third installment of the Vortex Visions spin-off series which is the sequel series to the Air Awakens series. This particular series follows characters directly connected to the original cast, though takes place many years later.
—BEWARE: BEYOND THIS POINT, SPOILERS LURK—
Failed Future picks up right where Chosen Champion left off; with the union of Vi and Taavin. Something we’ve all been waiting for. The story from there deals with their relationship now that they are finally seeing each other in person, we travel to new kingdoms, we meet new monarchs, we face old enemies, and we reunite with loved ones. All elements that led to my overall love of this installment.
What I liked; I enjoyed seeing Aldrick again. As someone who could swoon over him all day everyday, I was very excited to see him again. I figured we wouldn’t see him till the end, but once again I was wrong just like I was when I said Vi and Taavin wouldn’t meet until THIS book. (I mean, I was kind of right because it was the END of the second book, but still). Anyways, I enjoyed him telling Vi of his past, and the nostalgia you feel when you remember the original series and the hardships he and Vhalla faced “all those years ago”.
I enjoyed the world. I didn’t know how exploring a new world with Elise would turn out, but she pulled it off quite well. Once again, it wasn’t the most extraordinary world building I’ve ever seen, but I quite enjoyed the subtle differences mentioned between the Dark Isles and the Twilight Kingdom. It called attention to the fact that we were on a whole knew land, across seas, and things were definitely different there.
I enjoyed the plot. Over all this installment felt very plot driven. We were faced with Fallor again, as well as new kings, and the one man Taavin was running from. There was plenty action where as in earths end I felt like there was a lot more romance (not complaining one bit) but I quite enjoyed the action. When there’s good balance of both I find myself quite satisfied. Anyways, I enjoyed the progression of the story. I feel like a lot happened and Vi managed to accomplish a lot despite the obstacles in her way (and there were definitely obstacles).
What I didn’t like: I’m not going to say I have a bunch of things I didn’t like. Though there were things I found a bit lacking—at least for ME. Most might not agree or care enough to find it lacking for them. Anyway, I found that I wanted more between Taavin and Aldrick. I guess because this was Aldricks’ daughter’s love interest. I expected more reaction from him? I guess? Once again that’s just me.
I was a little confused by some of the fights between Vi and Taavin. Mostly because they felt a little rushed and maybe even a little forced. Like picture playing catch and someone who is a pro sports player throws you a ball and expects you to catch it with ease but you don’t because you’re not a pro! You don’t know all of the information needed to catch the ball correctly. Like with more information, I think I could have grasped the sudden anger (the ball) between them much better than with what we were given, if that makes sense. Like if I annoyingly compared them to a Aldrick and Vhalla, their fights felt a little more natural than Vi and Taavin. A little more justified. Not saying they didn’t have reasons to argue. Taavin definitely betrayed her, but all of it was just kind of thrown at us by a pro sports player, and we were the clumsy beginners. (Probs the worst analogy ever but I tried. Lol.)
Anyway, this last one is entirely personal and only applies to people who like romance in their stories. (I meet a lot of people who don’t like it). I remember loving the original series because there was a good amount of descriptions when it came to the spicy scenes. I will say that in this book it was lacking. And not to be that person, but I wouldn’t mind more of that in the future!
Overall I enjoyed this series IMMENSELY. My complaints did not actually affect my review at all because in short, Elise progressed the story perfectly, she answered any questions lingering in the second book, she progressed the relationships, and she brought forth much to look forward too. Ok maybe not in short, but in medium. lol.
So I’m giving this a 5 stars. And no, not because I’m biased, but because this was a perfect third installment.
"In the darkness, the crown princess felt herself burning alive, from her heart outward. But she didn’t cry. She didn’t call for help. She let the fires within burn. Until there was nothing left but ash."
The last twist at the end of the book was really unexpected! Enjoyed this one as well, the next book sounds like it's going to be something else!
I loved this installment! Vi has grown SO much and I now really like her character. The development of many of the characters in fact has been a joy to watch and Elise Kova is brilliant at showing that events that happen have consequences for the people involved and change the way they are/act. The storyline is fantastic with twists that I didn't see coming (which is rare!). I have no idea where it is going to go and I love that! The worldbuilding just keeps getting better and better with SO much detail. Very excited for the final two books!!
I was sent this book as an advanced copy by the author for reviewing purposes, but all opinions are my own.
Third books in long series are always a turning point and this one was as well, in more ways than one.
In the first half of the book there was a lot I liked. Kova's ability to introduce new characters and make them interesting right off the bat is something that works really well at the beginning of new series or, in this case, when our main character is somewhere new and has to make new connections.
However, the rest of the book was a little boring to me despite the fact that it was rather fast paced, or maybe that's why, since I enjoy a bit more focus on characters and relationships. But I might have honestly just not been in the mood for this, because I was also bored with Vi and Taavin's relationship since it took more page time than the prequels. I did enjoy some moments of course and I was able to focus on the final 20 pages more than I did for the second half of the book.
And that brings me to the ending (no worries, no spoilers from me). I think what Kova did in this book is very brave and I'll be able to fully process what happened in this book when I read the next, but it's certainly taken a turn I'd have never seen coming. I'm still not entirely sure what it all means for the rest of the series and for our view of Air Awakens, but I'm very curious to see what will happen next.
Speaking of Air Awakens, I truly believe that while it's not necessary to read it for the first two books of this series, there will be a lot of connections that are lost if you haven't read the original series. Especially going into the next books, I fully recommend catching up with the first series if you haven't done so already.
I haven’t gotten back to this series in almost a year. I wasn’t super into book two and then it just fell by the wayside. I finally picked up book three and I see a change of pace before me.
I also remember exactly why this book STRESSES ME OUT SO MUCH.
But you would need to read the Air Awakens series first to understand (which I rave about constantly so please do).
The action picked up a lot here and I thought that Vi really started coming into her own. Taking charge of matters. Leading a team. Saving family. All the things I wanted to see from her. It was great and I look forward to her continued passion towards saving the world.
Romance wise, things were better here too. Now that they are able to have some more interaction, Vi and Taavin are starting to pull me on board their ship. LETS SAIL. The conflicts that arise between them are not over dramatic and actually fit into the plot (the best). I’m anxious to see how things break free for them.
Lots of things happening here. SO MANY. I didn’t feel very lost though after not reading this series for a bit which was really appreciated. The way that things from other books are brought up line up perfectly, keeping me informed and wanting more.
Can’t wait to finish this series up shortly!
Overall audience notes: - Young adult fantasy + romance - Language: some - Romance: kisses to implied closed door scenes - Violence: physical altercations, magic, betrayals, weaponry; not overly bloody/gory
I loved the direction this book was heading in and I really thought the series was going to head into the same direction but I'm afraid to say I'm bitter that this series didn't.
To be vague and without spoilers, I thought the purpose of this series was for Vi to reunite with someone for a reason brought up in Chosen Champion, but it shifts itself into a time-travel series (like Days of Future Past), shattering my hopes of what it could have been.
Failed Future was the final book in this series that impressed me, the next two kind of disappointed.
I was captivated from the very first chapter, and the intensity of the story and the relationships between the characters (Taavin & Vi, be still my heart) kept me clicking through pages without wanting to stop for anything. Vi has had to grow up incredibly fast, with so much riding on her actions and choices, and the future seems dark - but she doesn't give up. Saving Taavin and taking on the unknown by herself leads to greater danger and mystery, and as always, Kova gives us just enough to make us want more at the end. Book four - yes. I'll just take that right now, thanks.
Thoughts after rereading via audiobook: -So, I'm assuming that everyone on Meru has an Irish or Scottish accent, but I'm too American to tell the difference -I heard Adela's little speech and thought "oh... that comes back into play later..." -Ulvarath had such a lilting, slinky voice that I was thrown off... very snaky... -I'm a lot more curious about the Draconis now that they've touched on them again, excited to see more of em... eventually... C'mon, ToS #2 -Oh hey, I know you, Lady D
Failed Future was the book that really turned the whole Air Awakens saga on its head. For one, this is the first book that takes place entirely outside of the Solaris Empire, and boy is that extra bit of worldbuilding just delightful. Plus, there's that little twist at the end that just changes everything. Nice.
As always, experiencing something via audiobook format changes the experience quite a bit, and I had a great time getting to reread the bits where Vi reunites with her dad. Papa Solaris is a champ who can both burn his enemies alive AND braid his daughter's hair. I remember being really emotional when I first read this book on the plane, and I had to silently have a crisis without freaking out the other passengers.
Upon my reread, I could really appreciate how the various characters introduced foil Vi as she's going on her journey. Arwin represents the untrusting, vengeful part of her that's emerged after the betrayal in Chosen Champion, while Papa Solaris is both fanservice and a reminder of who Vi was before all of this started. Taavin, meanwhile, is this nice middle zone, as he has been with her at every stage of her journey. I do appreciate that we got to learn more about him and the layers beneath his generally kind persona. After all, he's done some terrible things that must be addressed. I appreciate that he makes mistakes, though, and pays for them.
That being said, having read this series before, I think that some of the foreshadowings can be a little too on the nose (e.g. Deneya) while there are other plot threads that appear to get dropped (e.g. the mind-control spell situation and the taint). The overall pacing of this book gets a little janky, because it's a lot of traveling from A to B to C etc. while picking up new skills along the way. Fortunately, the action and problem-solving is a lot of fun.
Kova weaves words the way rumplestiltskin weaves gold.
Failed future is a brilliant addition to a series that only becomes more magical with each book.
Vi and Taavin learn the trials and tribulations of love. Add that to having the fate of saving the world one your shoulders and jeez, that's harder than any first Love most of us have had! Love hurts, butlove betrays , love drives. Vi and Taavin learn this in minute detail.
We get to meet some old characters, and new, like Arwin who I hope we'll see more of in Book 4. KOVA is seriously a master world builder. I was enchanted-and horrified- by all we learned and experience on Meru.
If you're one of those readers who sometimes reads the end first (guilty), I STRONGLY recommend you DO NOT. It will ruin SO much and you'll honestly be left more confused than if you'd just naturally gotten to the end. Trust me, you will not understand it without reading the book.
I'd you've read the Air Awakens series to completion, I do believe it'll really enrich Failed Future. You will have moments of "OHH HOLY CRAP THAT EVENT CAUSED THIS??" It's really quite satisfying.
I give Failed Future all the stars! It wraps up plots from book 1&2 while introducing us to new ones. I'll leave you with two final sentiments! 1. Poor Vi! If anyone needed to hear the song "Move Along" by All American Rejects, it's Vi! She's really pushed Into the frier by the end!

Every time I read an Elise Kova book i am amazed yet again. She somehow gives you a false sense of security that nothing worse can happen, then pulls that rug out from underneath you and leaves you absolutely anxious for her characters.
We mainly follow Vi and Taavin as they try to figure out what it is to be the Voice and the Champion. We meet new characters such as Arwin and learn of different magics that the different people have. There is betrayal, there is vengeance, and there is love.
Elise never fails to keep me reading and never fails to surprise twist I'd never see coming.
This one I also give 4.25 stars. Engaging, and I enjoyed her with Taavin finally as opposed to talking through a portal. This felt a bit like a bridge book which is why the first two are higher rated.
Looking forward to finishing the last two books so I can jump into the spin off series A Trial of Sorcerers. I have a feeling that will be my second favorite to Air Awakens.
I have yet to read an Elise Kova novel and find myself disappointed by the time I finished and this one is no different.
Only disappointment is that it ends and poor little ol' me has to wait few more months to find out what in the world actually happened.
Cause this book is freaking awesome and it gives you all the feels. All of them (I'd "all caps" it but this goes on amazon & I'm not giving them a reason not to publish my review 🤣🤣🤣). I am at a loss for words. I can't handle this stuff (totally can by the way). This is why I read books. This book, right here, is why I read. Why I love readings. For gems like these. For a writer who knows exactly what she's doing and rocks it. Rocks it hard. When you figure, you figured her out, & then she goes and does something absolutely mind blowing. When the best of fantasy meets reality and then the magic happens. That is why I read. Cause some authors have a way of making the world stop. Their words have a certain weight to them. And when they write, it is a shame to let them write in vain. So we read. Cause she's that good.
And here I thought that I would be able to go on a nice adventure with Elise Kova and her characters and not experience anything that would leave me biting my nails for the next few months.
And then I read that ending.
Firstly, I have to say that this was a highly rewarding book for anyone who's a fan of Kova's work and the AIR AWAKENS universe. It has all the character drama, romance, exciting characters, and magic that fantasy lovers could ask for. I loved how quickly the story swept me in, and have always enjoyed Vi as a character. She is someone I would love to have adventures with. Side characters like Taavin and my new favourite, Arwin, were layered and complex and added plenty of drama Vi's missions. I truly adore these characters and can't wait to see more of them.
The core of the story was filled with magic and betrayal and heartache. The level of detail and lore Kova adds to her work is amazing. And the ending... the ending was something I never saw coming and I am biting my nails for the next book. It can't come soon enough!
I think I would have enjoyed this more if I hadn’t been worrying about Aldrik’s life hanging in the balance the whole time. This is not an angst I enjoy - the will they or won’t they make it out alive scenario. My weak heart just can’t take it and it ruins my reading experience. But that’s a reflection on me, not the writing.
A lot happens in this book. Like, a lot a lot. Maybe too much? I liked that we finally had Vi and Taavin together at last. I’m still not connecting to them as much as I did Vhalla and Aldrik, but I think it’s unfair to compare the two. I wasn’t looking for another Vhalla/Aldrik pairing anyway. They are my favorite book ship of all-time and I wasn’t looking for a 2.0 version of them. I think what it boils down to is that this series is much more plot-driven than character-driven, whereas the relationship between Vhalla and Aldrik was the driving force in Air Awakens. Elise Kova really spoiled us with Vhalla and Aldrik. They spend SO much time together, often times just being together. I mean, a solid chunk of Earth’s End is just them hanging out in Aldrik’s bedroom. Again, we were spoiled. Like, they are top tier ship material. And so while I do like Vi and I really like how soft Taavin is, I don’t think we’re getting the same level of development between the pair as we’ve seen in Elise Kova’s previous works. There’s nothing wrong with that. I simply am someone who is drawn to characters over plot.
As much as I genuinely like the Vortex Chronicles, it was with this book that I started to get mildly frustrated with the story. The ending more than makes up for the slight slog--which might just be the curse of the "transitional middle"--so I still highly recommend the series, but it was at this point that I realized, once again, that I went into an Elise Kova series expecting one thing and getting something else. I think A Deal with the Elf King ruined me forever.
First, the definitive GOOD: the author has such a gift for unique, interesting characters. And that ending! It is precisely the reason I said these 10 books work best as one, continuous series. I know that probably isn't what the author intended--she is very clear that you don't have to read the first series to enjoy the second--but whether this was something Kova came up with later and then seamlessly wove alongside the existing narrative, or something she had carefully planned out from the beginning, my hat is off to her. Because damn, she's good.
So as a YA fantasy series, this is exceptional. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because, well ... I came into it, once again, thinking it was a romance. And with a pointy-eared mage! Elves, Mr. Frodo! I was SO excited. Unfortunately, there really isn't all that much romance to be had in this, and remarkably little of that delicious UST. It doesn't take away from what is a great story, but it's not what I thought I was getting. The story is compelling enough that I don't mind all that much, but I was hoping for a little more romantic oomph.
Still, I enjoyed it enough to want to see how it ends. 😃
WHAT DID I JUST READ. But really. What. Did. I. Just. Read. But really, you have to know that with an Elise book it is going to absolutely jar you. You KNOW that there is going to be a twist that is going to break you. So far in this series? Three times. Elise has done that to me three times in this series.
I don't even know what to write. If you are reading this you know it is the third novel in this series and you have hopefully already read the other two. This novel dives far deeper into our duo's world and their individual lives. I'm IN LOVE with a new character that joins the plot and absolutely speechless about the turn of events the last few chapters brought. No words.
I don't know if I forgive Elise for that ending. That stands to be seen.
We will see.
But if you have ever read one of her other series, you need to read this one because you will absolutely love it.
Honestly I’m torn between 3 and 4 stars but it’s not a 3.5 star book. I don’t know if that makes sense to you but it does to me.
There was a lot to like about this book but not a lot to love about it. I think this series plays too much into the “bring new readers into the series” even though it is VERY clearly connected to not only the Air Awakens series but the Golden Guard trilogy. For new readers, they get a lot of detailed history and information but for readers who have been a part of the canon for a while, like myself, everything is taking too long.
I think the love arc following a similar pattern to that of Vhalla and Aldrik in Air Awakens is meh. I am over couples growing together, then breaking apart, only to have to come back together. I think this series feels as though it is lacking in originality to me because I have seen some of the flashes of what’s to come in the previous books and the characters don’t feel any different than the ones we’ve seen before.
But the fighting styles, the magic, and the expanded world building are all making this worthwhile. It took me a long time to get through this one because of characters but I’m quite enjoying the stuff outside of the characters. I want to see the big bad villain, I want to learn more about the expanded magic system and other continents! I just feel like I’m being bogged down by Vhalla 2.0.
Will I continue? Yes. Will I enjoy this series more than Air Awakens? Probably not.
3 stars!! woahhh there’s a lot going on now, like holy shit. the plot is developing a lot faster, and the politics are fun and interesting. there’s a lot of deceit and betrayal that i feel like it’s me getting betrayed, even if i see it coming from a mile away. it’s probably my own trust issues LMAO what dragged this down for me was just while there’s a lot happening, it’s still building up to the peak (but this book still was enjoyable) but i’m still unsure of Vi and Taavin’s relationship. i can’t connect with them as a couple, since they’re kinda angry with each other and wont forgive each other for past transgressions. however, i also didn’t like dying of worry for Aldrik. and for Vi!! i know they won’t die but the way my heart stopped when he was pronounced “dead” i don’t think Ms Kova could kill the power couple off anyways, excited for the next book but i hope it picks up on a more exciting note!! i want to see more of Vi’s family and some more characters previously mentioned in Air Awakens

With a name liked Failed Future you got to know a huge shift is approaching in this third installment of the spin off series from Air Awakens. This book is very emotional between our main characters Vi and Taavin who are on what seems impossible task to rescue Vi farther. Two characters who are from very different lands who are trying to save the world. Two characters who think they know all their is to know but as you read this incredible twisting novel you find not all is as it seems.
Vi opens herself to many people and puts a lot of trust in them but she ends up getting betrayed by those she never thought would betray her. Their a lot that happens on this journey to rescue Aldrick and by the time your at the end of the book your so far from where you started that just like Vi your not really sure where you are. I am very excited to continue this tale in book 4 Sovereign Sacrifice due out October 15, 2019.
