The Thirteenth Gate

Rate this book
Winter 1888. At a private asylum in the English countryside, a man suspected of being Jack the Ripper kills an orderly and flees into the rain-soaked night. His distraught keepers summon the Lady Vivienne Cumberland—who's interviewed their patient and isn't sure he's a man at all. An enigmatic woman who guards her own secrets closely, Lady Vivienne knows a creature from the underworld when she sees one. And he’s the most dangerous she's ever encountered.

As Jack rampages through London, this time targeting rare book collectors, Lady Vivienne begins to suspect what he's looking for. And if he finds it, the doors to purgatory will be thrown wide open…

Across the Atlantic, an archaeologist is brutally murdered after a Christmas Eve gala at the American Museum of Natural History. Certain peculiar aspects of the crime attract the interest of the Society for Psychical Research and its newest investigator, Harrison Fearing Pell. Is Dr. Julius Sabelline's death related to his recent dig in Alexandria? Or is the motive something darker?

As Harry uncovers troubling connections to a serial murder case she’d believed was definitively solved, two mysteries converge amid the grit and glamor of Gilded Age New York. Harry and Lady Vivienne must join forces to stop an ancient evil. The key is something called the Thirteenth Gate. But where is it? And more importantly, who will find it first?

I've always loved to read more than anything in the world, especially so-called genre stories—mysteries, fantasy, sci-fi, thrillers, horror. I like books that take you by the hand and lead you out of the mundane. That ease back the curtain and show you the wondrous and dark and unexpected lurking just around the next corner. I worked in journalism for a long time before I returned to writing fiction. Guess which is more fun?

Extremely Satisfying!

The SPR (Science of Psychical Research) is on the trail of a monster. Lady Vivienne Cumberland and her daeva, Alec, are called upon to catch a doctor who has escaped from a mental institute. He is expected to be a serial killer who has come from the United States (Mr. Hyde). And he is expected to be Jack the Ripper (from White Chapel).

They trail Dr. Clarence all over London as he leaves dead bodies? He is expected to be able to perform magic as a daemon. Well, Vivienne and Alec have some tricks up their sleeves, but that doesn’t stop them pursuing Dr. Clarence back to the United States.

Now they have the assistance of Harrison Fearing Pell and her friend Dr. John Weston, who are in the American branch of the SPR.

This book is filled with action throughout each chapter. And the chapters are short so the story moves quickly.

Vivienne and Alec are bonded together and they work well together. They’ve worked as partners for many years and they are great friends. The same thing for Harry and John they are good friends despite the fact that Harry shot John in the previous episode in this series.

You can’t help but love the way they get along and cheer them on. When they are in trouble, one of them is always there to help the other. And you are happy when things work out.

But will they catch Dr. Clarence and put this daemon to rest?

Four stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Original Post: The Thirteenth Gate at FLYLēF (www.flylef.com)

A WEEKEND SET aside to enjoy some quality time with one of my favorite authors, Kat Ross, and her new release The Thirteenth Gate, has, as I'd hoped, been very enjoyable.

As a huge fan of The Fourth Element series going through a bit of withdrawal, The Thirteenth Gate is the perfect genre, mash-up remedy. Many characters from The Fourth Element intersect in this book, including Lady Vivienne (Tijah) and Alec Lawrence (Achaemenes), and a few other unsavory creatures from the Dominion. To see Achaemenes transform from a bonded daēvas (still is) to Alec–a dapper, Victorian gentleman with a wicked cane sword– makes my heart sing. Vivienne and Alec don't simply make an appearance. I was so happy that they had a fully developed story arc that eventually converge with investigators, Harrison Pell and John Weston, as they solve the mystery of a man suspected of being Jack the Ripper amid the glamor of Gilded Age New York.

I thought Ms. Ross marries the world of science and paranormal seamlessly, applying well-researched, scientific principles to an intricately detailed investigation where the clues unfold to reveal a wholly plausible, yet deeply sinister case of supernatural phenomena.

The mastery of The Thirteenth Gate is that it is a story propelled by the thrill of suspense, yet beautifully centered on emotions that tug at my heart. I couldn't help feeling melancholic for bonded heroes, Lady Vivienne and Alec, whose complex relationship and deep connection redefines the meaning of desire and sacrifice. I have always enjoyed Ms. Ross’ unique style of romance-to love quietly, secretly; to sacrifice deeply, unconditionally. It was beautiful and complex. But, my feelings for Harry were more mixed this time around. She seemed more youthful and prideful. Fortunately, Harry is an astute character who recovers well. Ms. Ross was exceptionally strategic in exploiting Harry’s flaw to deliver a gripping climax.

I really enjoyed The Thirteenth Gate. Ms. Ross leaves few leaves unturned, delivering a balanced conclusion of revelations, resolutions, and the hallmarks of more mysteries from the Dominion in future installments.

{Thank you to Kat Ross and publisher for kindly giving me this book free of charge, which does not influence my review.}

**You can see this full review and more at Book Briefs: https://bookbriefs.net**The Thirteenth Gate is the first book in the Dominion Mystery series by Kat Ross. I have previously read The Daemoniac by her, which I thought was going to be the first book in the series, but really ended up being more of a prequel. I have also real the first book in her Fourth Element series, and I while I enjoyed that one was well, the Dominion series is really shaping up to be my favorite! But, what is cool about The Thirteenth Gate is that there is character overlap between the two series. It was very creative and well done on her part. I enjoyed getting to see Alex and Vivienne, though I have not read all the books in the Fourth Element series. The Thirteenth Gate did not disappoint. I loved this atmospheric read. It was exactly what I wanted, and I can't wait for more.

The Dominion series is a young adult detective mystery story with a flair of the paranormal. It felt like the anime Ghost Hunt (which I am super upset is no longer on Netflix! Why does Netflix keep taking all the good shows off? But I digress, that is a rant for another day.) mixed with the Jackaby series by William Ritter, and a touch of Penny Dreadful. I loved the atmospheric setting paired with all of the paranormal elements. I can't wait to read more in the Dominion Mystery series. I think it might be my favorite series yet by Kat Ross. It takes place in the late 1800s and 19 year old Harry is Author Conan Doyle's neice, and she paired with her friend John, are a detective duo I loved reading about. I am really on a sherlock type story kick and The Daemoniac really hit the spot.

I never know what is too little or too much to divulge in reviews of mystery books, so I will leave the plot out of it and stick to some general highlights of the story. I loved how the story unfolded. I thought Kat Ross did an excellent job laying clues out, but at the same time making this one feel like a dark adventure. But my favorite of all is the setting. It was very well done. I was instantly transported to that time. I loved watching the interaction between all of the characters. I am really hoping and pulling for more of a romance in the next book. It was just hinted at in The Thirteenth gate and I am itching to see more of it.

Bottom line: The Thirteenth Gate is a great read. Perfect for fans of the Jackaby series and of the Netflix tv show Penny Dreadful. I really enjoyed the ride this mystery took me on. Read it in the fall for a great atmospheric mystery. I think this might be my very favorite Kat Ross book yet!

“We are the light against the darkness. And now we’ve failed in our duty. Clarence is gone,” she said bitterly. “Escaped. He murdered an orderly. There’s no doubt it’s the same creature that ran loose in New York. None at all.”

Kat Ross, you have created a fan for life! I absolutely loved this, for many of the same reasons I loved The Daemoniac (the first book in the series) last year.

The Thirteenth Gate is:

Well paced. I can't say this enough...Kat Ross just gets pacing.
Full of familiar and new characters who you'll want to get to know.
A great mix of historical, paranormal, mystery, and romance!
Atmospheric - again, the setting plays a big role and is a character unto itself.
Standalone enough to read it alone but connected enough to make you want to go back and forward in the series (more on that in a bit).
“So, The Serpentine. It’s by far the closest one.” Sidgwick swallowed. “I went boating in Hyde Park just a few months ago. Are you saying—?” “That there’s a portal to the Underworld beneath the lake? Yes, but only in parts.”

The Thirteenth Gate is the second in the Dominion series but also connects with Kat Ross' previous series, The Fourth Element Series. I've read The Daemoniac but have not yet dove into The Fourth Element Series (but did I pick up the first one as soon as I finished this one? You bet.). Readers who have picked up any of the previous books will welcome revisiting the world and characters and, for new readers, you get enough background info that you won't be lost. The worldbuilding and setting up of the story never feels overstretched. Pieces of the story take place in New York and other times the setting is London, both richly painted yet the world has been updated to allow the paranormal elements to flow.

Fans of Sherlock + Supernatural will feel at home with the paranormal and mystery elements. I felt a sense of urgency as the two parties searched for the Thirteenth Gate, which will surely bring destruction to humankind. Nothing and no one is safe from the demon underbelly.

I can't wait to see what the gang is up to in the next book.

I am a huge fan of all Kat Ross books, so when I heard The Thirteenth Gate had characters from The Fourth Element series AND was a sequel to The Daemoniac I nearly fell off my chair.

Not only was the book a complex and page-turning mystery, but the historical tone drew me into a different time. She painted such vivid and realistic pictures of both New York and London that I felt I could navigate the streets. The villains were terrifying, the characters as familiar as old friends, and the story itself was hard to put down.

The Thirteenth Gate is a magical combination of historical fiction, fantasy, and mystery...a guaranteed fan favorite for lovers of any genre.

I really enjoyed the first book in the series, but was initially thrown when this sequel started with a different cast of characters. However the two storylines did then merge and became a very interesting story. Vivienne and Alec were cool new characters and we also meet a necromancer. John also seems to have some Skills. Recommended light hearted read.

I have to be honest and say I wasn't quite sure about this book the first 75 pages or so. I have been greatly anticipating this book's release in part because I loved Harry and John from The Daemoniac and couldn't wait to see what they've been up to. However, this book opens up with all new characters - at least all new to me. I later found out it brings forward some main characters from Ross' Fourth Element Series. Having not read them (but now I want to) I was somewhat let down and confused. Luckily that didn't last for long.

This book chronicles a murder case and evil forces at large in the world. In fact, someone is trying to gather an ancient artifact so they can open up the gates of hell. Harry and John are soon pulled in to assist with the case once the setting moves from England to New York and after that point, I could hardly put the book down.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves historical mysteries/fantasy. I have to say there might be some strong romance at work, it is so minute and done in such an adult fashion - meaning no love triangles or insta-love.

Many thanks to the author and XPresso Book Tours who provided me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Thirteenth Gate is the first proper book of the Dominion Mysteries series, since The Daemoniac was more of a prequel, and in this one we get to meet so old friends from the Fourth Element series!

I was so very excited to read more on the adventures of Harry and John and since there was a bit of a chance of pace with the re-introduction of Alex and Vivienne and magic into the more detective story that the prequel was... I felt a bit disconnected from the story till I connected again with Alex and Vivienne, as they were in this time and place. I feel like I should have re-read Queen of Chaos right before reading this one, so I would have not had to stop and rack my brains to make sure I remembered correctly who everyone was with the names I knew them from before!

I was so very fascinated by the mystery and the murder and how everything started following little threads to tie it all up together and be solved. I loved that Harry and John were once again back in the thick of it and solving things together, and how Harry had her worldview complete challenged and put upside down, and by her own hero figure!

As always, Kat manages to paint such a vivid picture of the time and place, no matter if it's London or New York. You can almost feel the mist and fog or the torrential rain... And you can feel the oppresiveness of a tunnel that descends to who knows where.

The characters and their relationships are, as always, very well written and Kat manages to add a few hints to romance here and there and makes us really feel for the characters, but always keeping the romance as a side dish and not as one of the main courses, so to speak. It can be great for allowing the story to unfold and the mystery and the magic to take the main stage, but it can also be a little frustrating when you as the reader want something to happen! I have high hopes for my ship and I feel quite despondent for another couple, but I guess we'll see in the next book!

I cannot wait till we get the next story and have Harry & John and Vivienne & Alex back to working together and learning from one another! Well deserved 4 stars!

Independent Reviewer for Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!

I enjoyed the thirteenth gate , second part of the dominion series. I had read the first book previously but it's possible to read this without any previous knowledge of how the characters are connected. The series is what I'd call helpful, but not essential.

The new dynamics of Vivienne and Alec are explored in this book in addition to the characters of the first book. I found that I warmed immensely to these two characters particularly.

Be ready to feel angry, sad, happy and to want to cheer certain characters on. This is a really good follow up to the first book and well worth reading for anyone who enjoys thriller/supernatural and demon type books.

Look forward to seeing more from this author in future.

Fresh off 'The Daemoniac', this one felt - like two totally different books put together. I really felt confused at the way that it went from no supernatural (or hints) to all the supernatural, all the time. I felt like I had missed a book, or even a short story, between the first and second one.

And I really missed having Harry be the focus.

I did enjoy it and I look forward to more in the series. It probably did not help that I immediately read this after the first one - the changes in style and focus are very very apparent.

EDIT: I just found out that this takes characters from a completely different series of hers. That explains the juxtaposition - I really really wish I had known that because it really felt like I missed an entire world building the entire read ... and I had!

I have waited for this baby and the minute I got it, I dropped pretty much everything I was doing and dove in!

Man oh man…

One word: Perfect!

Alright so we continue on from The Daemoniac where we met Harry and John and we continue on with their adventures as Harry is now a slightly more experienced investigator. We also have the introduction of 2 new characters Lady Vivienne Cumberland and her companion Alec Lawrence.

We were warned at the end of Queen of Chaos that we were going to see familiar characters again in this series and what a glorious thing this is! I do not want to tell you too much because well you need to enjoy it the way I did! I really do not want to take this away from you!

We had a great mix of what for me makes a wonderful book and this series is going to be a fabulous adventure! Between Harry and Lady Vivienne, we have a lot of badass ladies to keep us entertained and on our toes each in their own ways.

It was really good fun seeing our Harry facing what she did not really believe in head on and getting a feel of it all through her eyes.

I really think that in this volume we get a better sense on how the series will go on, especially if we are combining the 2 leading couples, an ex-baddie from times long gone and who knows some other beloved ones making an apparition.

Alright, so you do not need to have read The Fourth Element series to enjoy this book or the one before; you would need to have read book 1 as this is following the events of the The Daemoniac and I would say it would not hurt to have read The Fourth Element series because it gives an extra something to really appreciate The Thirteenth Gate!

If you read my blog on a regular basis, you would know that I am obsessed with The Fourth Element series especially with my heroic couple Darius and Nazafareen! I am sad to say that they did not make an appearance here, but there is hope I will see them again at some point in this series (Please Kat!!!!)

You really see how much love and care was put into the writing of this book and every single time I am blow away by Kat’s raw talent in sucking us in the atmosphere like we are right there going through the events with the characters.

Frankly, I did not put it down until the last page, and even then I wanted more! Now I wonder how long it will take to the next book, I am addicted what can I say?

Since we already know roughly where the next story is going to take place, I cannot wait as I am now in countdown mode until we have a release date.

Kat, once again you have surpassed yourself and managed to amaze me even though I knew I was holding something epic in my hands (or in my kindle, I kinda needs all your books as hard copies to go back and reference things easier lol).

I am going to highly recommend The Thirteenth Gate and encourage you to read everything that came before it as well!

‘In the universe…there are things that are known, and things that are unknown, and in between, there are doors.’

What do you get if you take an intricately plotted, suspenseful historical mystery set in 19th century London and New York and add ghouls and daemons? An enthralling, wonderfully entertaining read, that’s what! I’m not much into paranormal or fantasy but I really enjoyed this book because the fantasy elements were subtly woven into a satisfyingly complex historical mystery.

Lady Vivienne makes a feisty, idiosyncratic and resourceful heroine alongside her companion, Alec Lawrence. Their bond is symbiotic in nature, forged and developed over a great expanse of time with each contributing skills and abilities that make them an effective fighting force against the powers of evil. As Lady Vivienne explains, ‘We are the light against the darkness’.

Harrison (Harry) Pell and her friend, John Weston, specialise much more in solving the crimes of this world – think Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, but of course they were only fictional, weren’t they? However, in The Thirteenth Gate, Harry and John are forced to confront malefactors from a distinctly more shadowy realm. When Lady Vivienne, Alec, Harry and John join forces, nothing can stop them – or can it?

This is the second book in the series. Although there are lots of references to earlier events in The Thirteenth Gate, this didn’t affect my enjoyment and the book works perfectly well as a standalone. Except….that having read this you’re definitely going to want to read the first one (I certainly do), so why not start there? In fact, as the author explains in her afterword, the story of Lady Vivienne and Alec starts much further back than that, in The Fourth Element trilogy.

When books in a series claim to be a stand-alone read, I'm wary to the idea and feel the need to start the series from the first book; however, I couldn't help but feel drawn to check this one out. I yearn for the time of the 19th century - pre-technology days - a more simple, yet enthralling time period that held a lot of secrets. The heroine, Lady Vivienne has a fiery side that I instantly felt a kinship with as I read through her fight against evil powers.

I thought the mystical/fantasy element would destroy the historical placement of the story but it only enhanced the read! The fantasy elements wrapped everything in a hug, softly infusing into the story by giving us a heroine who faces her own fears to protect others. Add in a secondary characters with Alec, John, and Harry and the force that they push back against the depths of hell is unstoppable....or will they meet a fate too dark?

There were moments where I felt the story was a bit drawn out -- although, I think my lack of patience for "being in the know" was the culprit for this feeling of needing to rush to the point. I literally had chills, goosebumps, and felt fearful with the illuminating descriptions of each scene. I loved the set of characters (who have lead me back to wanting to read the first!) but it was the villains who gripped me tightly throughout the book. The romance was light and not the focus - which I was grateful for! If you enjoy a darker mystery that will pull you into a fantasy world, this work of devilry writing will hold you tightly from start to finish.

A perfect combination of mystery, murder, mayhem and a silver lining. It is 1889 when this novel starts in England. A dangerous criminal newly arrived from America has been incarcerated in an asylum, & the S.P.R. believes this doctor might be the deranged Jack the Ripper. He kills a guard & escapes.
The Thirteenth Gate represents 13 gates from which demons & other dangerous beings can open to do havoc, death & major evil in present day Earth.
Lady Vivienne Cumberland and Alec Lawrence are in the London office of the SPR and sail for America to see if the "being" has inhabited another body.
Harry is one of the few Society for Pyschical Research women investigators & was instrumental in the capture of Hyde. She
and her associate, John, are doing guard duty for the grand opening of the New York America Museum of Natural History' s exclusive Egyptian exhibit Ptolemy's Tomb: Secrets of Ancient Alexandria. At the special preview for the elite on Christmas Day, a priceless occult artifact is stolen and the archeologist, now head of the Egyptian department is brutally murdered.
Great characters and plot. Excellent historical details and specific clothing & everyday life is excellent.

[I received a copy of this book in return for my honest review from Xpresso Book Tours.]

I started reading the Thirteenth Gate right after I finished the Daemoniac (which was fantastic). The writing is just as solid as before, the characters are interesting, and this time there's a fascinating lore behind the world that I want to pick apart.

What disappointed me was the sudden supernatural element whereas the Daemoniac, for all its spookiness, always felt more rooted in reality. From what I've read, I gather that it's Kat Ross merging two series into one, but I almost wish that it could have remained separate.

I would have have happily read more exploits of Harry and John without the supernatural being confirmed as true and thus, moving further away from the mystery element I'd enjoyed. After all, when you through in demons, suddenly everything is possible.

But that supernatural side of things is also fascinating, so I couldn't mark it down too much. In the end, I wish that the two worlds had been kept separate, but it's still incredibly satisfying.

I was a little disappointed by The Daemoniac, the first book in the new series by Kat Ross. I mean just a teeny-tiny bit disappointed, afterall it’s still Kat Ross and she’s amazing. But……… after reading the Forth Element series I was expecting more fantasy, more super natural. In the Daemoniac almost everything “super natural” ends up with an explanation. It’s much more like a Sherlock Holmes novel.

But my disappointment ended with The Thirteenth Gate. Which brings in characters and lore from the Forth Element dropping them into 1888 London and New York. It was a rip-roaring adventure tale filled with mystery and danger.

(I do not think it’s necessary for you to have read the Forth Element books in order to enjoy this book. However, it will add a lot to the background story.)

I don’t want to give away too much of the story, but I will say that it kept me glued to my Kindle and I finished the book in only two days. The characters, the pace, the multiple threads all drive the story forward and I was almost afraid to blink in case I would miss something. The settings chosen for the book are grand and gritty and the contrast really adds to the action. The setting for the climax is so creepy that it gave me goose bumps. Just, wow, what a choice of setting and characters and action!

Two weak points in the book; One do we have to have Lady Vivienne’s smoking thrust into our face every other page? It just took me out of the story and distracted from an otherwise very deeply drawn character. Two Harry is a little too much like Nancy Drew. Even the way her hair is described made me think of the Girl Detective.

Bottom Line:

I loved it! The Thirteenth Gate fired on all cylinders, and kept the excitement coming. I hope we get a third Dominion Mystery because she certainly left it wide open for more adventure. This book totally made up for the slight disappointment I felt when reading the first book… and then some.

I received this book free though Xpresso Book Tours.

Demons, Mayhem and Murder!

The problem, for me, with reading a book that is fast-paced, well-written and exciting, with characters I care about, oohs that I always read it too fast, and then it's over, and I'm sad. The Thirteenth Gate moves at a good clip, its paired mysteries, with their paired sleuths, skillfully woven together. And there's just a tiny hint of romance, or rather unspoken love, between each pair--just enough to make the reader want more! Altogether a highly satisfying read, and I just wish there were a dozen more in the series already.

Absolutely fantastic. Breathtaking descriptions, thickening plots, and intriguing characters. Kat Ross has done it again.

13th Gate is a great detective novel, mixing the supernatural with late 19th century flavor.

I came to this somewhat reluctantly. I had greatly enjoyed the Persian suite, but this one is reviewed as yet another Jack the Ripper book, and this alone was enough to put me off. Jack is a hackneyed theme, a perennial of the would-be gothic, and interest in him is often prurient and misogynistic - see https://eastendwomensmuseum.org/blog/... .

On the other hand, I did want to follow up on what the future held in store for Tija and her daeva friends. So, after having gone through the first in this series - Tija and co are not yet introduced - I determined to pick this one up as well.

Happily, Jack the Ripper quickly fades into the background, once it has been established that he is an avatar of something much more deadly, and even more fictional. The reader may recall that Tija had given herself the task of hunting down the diabolical creatures that Nazafareen's breaking of the gates had loosed upon the world. Kept alive by her link to a young daeva, she has survived down the centuries chasing ghouls wherever she finds them.

As is usually the case with Kat Ross, the story rips along, the characters are subjected to a series of mental and physical tests of their mettle, and there is little of the agonized introspection - the Silver Surfer syndrome - that so often mars modern fantasy. This is not to say that the characters do not have their stresses and their doubts; they do, but the author handles them deftly, allowing the reader to grasp them with a minimum of fuss. The relationship between Tija and her daeva consort is clearly a difficult and complex one, but for the most part the knots are bared with a subtle knife.

The main characters from the first book in the series also figure. Harry, the lead, is a young woman who takes on some of the attributes of Sherlock Holmes, although these don't get in the way too much. Her constant companion, John Watson, carries much of the action. He's obviously in love with Harry, but the latter has little time for affairs of the heart. (Actually, I'm rooting for a passion à deux between Harry and Tija at some stage in the series).

Kat Ross must have had a lot of fun writing this. She slips in references to a number of cultural figures, including Conan Doyle, Henry Sidgwick and - my favourite - the butler, Quimby who could be either Phineas - an American spiritualist - or Fred, producer of the Tom and Jerry cartoons. Or both.

When Dr. William Clarence escapes from the Greymoor Lunatic Asylum, two people are very alarmed if not especially surprised because only they suspect the doctor's true nature. Lady Vivienne Cumberland and her companion, Alec Lawrence, have a long history with secrets, the kind of secrets that are held because most people wouldn't believe them anyway, and Lady Vivienne's warnings about the doctor had not been heeded. One of those secrets is that Clarence, a New York Police Department surgeon, may possibly be Jack the Ripper but not the expected kind of criminal.

The Thirteenth Gate is the second book in the Dominion Mysteries but also brings in characters and storylines from Ms. Ross's Fourth Element series. I haven't read that series so it took me a little while to get up to speed with Vivienne and Alec but I had already met Harry Pell and John Weston and was delighted to be back in their world. Harry is Arthur Conan Doyle's goddaughter and, although not a blood relative, shows a lot of Doyle's intelligence and curiosity about things that are not precisely rational. Those qualities stand her in good stead when they team up with the London contingent and, when Harry and Vivienne work together, they're a force of nature all by themselves. One other character that I really like is Detective Inspector Richard Blackwood, the most open-minded police detective one could ever hope to meet.

This is a most formidable group, well-suited to discover the truth behind the killings and the nature of the beast, so to speak. Ms. Ross kept me flipping page after page with all the twists and convolutions and an ever-changing aspect of time. If I have any quibble at all, it's that I wish I had realized reading the Fourth Element books first might be a good thing. Still, I never felt the urge to put this one down so I could go do that but they're on my radar now ;-)

**I received a copy of this book from Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and not influenced by my source.**

Like it's predecessor, this one has a slower build to it. But once everything comes together, it's rather exciting to see everything come into play.

I adore Harry and John as characters and I wish they were featured a touch more here. Vivienne and Alec were definitely intriguing, but I'm unfamiliar with their origin series The Midnight Sea (The Forth Elements) so they were a little unexpected. I warmed to them by the end for sure though.

A good supernatural mystery that will have readers curious for the next installment.

Harry and John are back and this time there's no denying the supernatural. More murder and mayhem and the introduction of characters Vivienne and Alec who share an unusual bond. I really enjoyed the sequel and look forward to more from this author.

I enjoyed the second part of this book with Harry and John and all the information about books in the first part. I didn't known Vivien and Alec when I started reading and even when I learned a few things about them , it was still little confusinfg for me. In the end I liked the first book better.

Thank you to Xpresso Book Tours and author Kat Ross for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review!

The Thirteenth Gate is Kat Ross’s latest release and is a thrilling tale of murder, mystery and the demonic set amongst a sharp and gritty Victorian London background that will captivate readers with its beguiling storyline.

London towards the end of the 19th century has been the victim of a series of brutal, almost inhuman murders and the man believed to be the killer, dubbed Jack the Ripper, has just killed an orderly and escaped the asylum where he was being held. Lady Vivienne Cumberland and her associate Alec Lawrence have been tasked by the international agency they work for with tacking down the escaped killer who is far from human. Vivienne and Alec have a unique history and connection to the underworld creatures that plague London, but Jack may be the worst they’ve ever faced. Across the Atlantic Ocean, sleuths Harrison Fearing Pell and John Weston are beginning their careers with the Society of Psychical Research but their first case isn’t going to plan. None of the clues make sense and what’s worse is that everything they do understand points at a sinister supernatural connection. Investigating the murder of an archaeologist leads the duo to some troubling discovers and with the danger greater with every discovery, what will it take to stop the killer at work? And will they be brought to justice before it’s too late?

The Thirteenth Gate bridges the gap between Kat Ross’s Fourth Element series and her Victorian murder mystery, The Daemoniac as she begins her new series titled Dominion Mysteries. Picking up where its prequel The Daemoniac picks off, The Thirteenth Gate follows Harry and John, and well as “new” characters Vivienne and Alec. Fans of the Fourth Element series, such as myself, will be thrilled to discover Vivienne and Alec’s connection to the previous series and will be thrilled to see them feature in The Thirteenth Gate.

At first I was disappointment over the possibility of following a new set of main characters as I had previously enjoyed following Harry and John in The Daemoniac, but as soon as I discovered who Vivienne and Alec were, I couldn't have been more ecstatic to join them once again. So much has changed but Vivienne still features the capability, strength and tenacity that make her a strong female lead and Alec is still the kind individual he has always been. The Thirteenth Gate sheds some light on the current relationship between Vivienne and Alec and I'm intrigued to see where Ross plans to take things.

Kat Ross details such a raw, gritty and passionate setting within The Thirteenth Gate which feels authentic, and fills it with complex, intriguing characters. Set during the late 19th century, Ross depicts wonderful explorations of medicine, science and magic and introduces new friends and old enemies, possibly turned allies, to the novel.

Danger rises with the turn of every page and the haunting ghouls and daemons that threaten society make for highly interesting reading. Mysterious and beguiling, The Thirteenth Gate kicks off The Dominion Mysteries wonderfully and leaves me eager to see what Kat Ross plans for the series next!

*I received this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own!*

I started reading The Thirteenth Gate as soon as I finished reading The Daemoniac because I was so into the story that, I just had to know what would happen! Since this is a sequel, I'd advice you to read my review on the first book in the series, because I really don't want to get too much into the story in this review and spoil the plot and the direction it takes! You can find it here.

I'm going to start with the only thing that didn't sit well with me in this book and kind of disappointed me. I really would have preferred it if the author had continued using first person point of view. As opposed to The Daemoniac, the story was told in a third person POV and I had to read a couple of chapters in order to get my bearings because, truth be told, the sudden change in writing had me a bit disoriented. This, of course, did not take anything away from the magic of this books and its predecessor! Just wanted to mention it because, as a reader, I prefer books written in first person and the transition was a bit abrupt!

The second book in the series starts where the first one left off and Harry is now an experienced investigator who has gained quite the reputation after the events of the first book ! New characters are introduced and they join forces with Harry and John, in order to get to the bottom of a mystery that is quite intricate and at the same time, fascinating. That made things more interesting than I could've hoped and I could not stop reading folks!

As for the mystery itself, I can't really talk about it in great detail since that's what makes the book so special. I'll just leave that for you to discover as you start reading and find it difficult to stop because of all the twists and turns that are hidden somewhere, in between pages and chapters!

The characters were so likable and their development more than impressive! The author did a great job at creating characters that are easy to connect with and relate to. (I would give anything to live an adventure like this so, to me, Harry is more than relatable. In another universe, I probably would've been a detective myself and that's exactly where the ''relatable'' part comes in!) They're just so familiar and I love the fact that their development continues in the second book as well!

Overall, because I really don't want to repeat myself or reveal information that I shouldn't, I immensely enjoyed the direction Kat Ross chose for the Dominion Mysteries and I couldn't have been happier with the way things turned out! The pictures she paints in your mind are so vivid and you can't get enough of...everything that happens throughout the book, really. The plot itself was as enjoyable as the first book in the series and really had my full attention from the beginning 'til the end.

Bottom line is, I can't recommend this series enough! I definitely feel like The Daemoniac just opened the door for a truly fascinating world that I personally cannot get enough of! I really hope the author will keep adding to the magic of it with her writing as the story goes on! There's definitely more to follow so, I'm desperately waiting for what will come next!
