Followers of Jesus have been counted among the most courageous and loving people of the last two millennia. They have also contributed to some of the worst atrocities in the history of the world, many of which were committed against people who also professed hope in Jesus. The Bible calls Jesus the prince of peace, and Jesus Himself prayed earnestly to God that His followers would be unified, or “one” as He Himself is One with His heavenly Father, God. However, followers of Jesus are known more for their disunity than for their unity. This should not be. The call to peace and unity issued by followers of Jesus is easily forgotten when those call for it do not practice it in their own relationships. Let us examine what provides the real foundation for Christian unity and how it may be sought among followers of Jesus around the world.
Living abroad in the mission field has taught us many things, but one of the most beautiful is the value of finding fellowship with a diverse array of Christians from many denominational and national backgrounds. It seems the further from the "center," or established norms of Christiandom we find ourselves, the less emphasis there is on peripheral issues of doctrine and the more intense focus there is on the work of Jesus on the cross.
Any book which draws attention to the beauty of unity in the Body in a healthy way is a win for the church; United We Stand did that well. While this is the first published book of the author, who I must for full disclosure admit is a friend, it was well polished for grammar mistakes and content. I did find the heavy focus on Scripture quotes, which quite possibly took up half of the book's content, to be a bit overwhelming, though I suppose I can't complain he was quoting scripture!
Some of the chapters felt a bit off the main path of unity also, but I understand why they were included. Still the focus was a healthy and needed one and I don't think anyone would be at a loss for taking the time to read it!
