Blood of Duncliffe #8

The Highlander’s Widow

Rate this book
Love long in the grave, a lonely and broken soldier, and a ruthless and greedy uncle…

For Dowager Countess Amalie Inverkeith, life has been sad for the last five years, broken only by the joy of watching her young son turn into a man. Now he’s run off and joined the Jacobites, soundly defeated at Culloden, and received a grave wound for his trouble. If he’s to survive to take over the estate of his father, the late earl of Inverkeith, he must have help…and soon.

In a frantic rush to find only the best healers, Amalie heads to her friends at Duncliffe Manor. They will know what to do. When she arrives, and after ensuring that her son is in good hands, she soon spots something awry, and wonders if they will all face death soon.

A Wounded Soldier

In more ways than one, Bronan Ludlow has known what it is to be wounded in life. He grew up in a home filled with abuse, especially toward his mother, who abandoned him years before to his abusive father. Now he’s a soldier, well-trained and battle-hardened, but a gunshot wound leaves him at the mercy of the elements. He knows all too well that he must escape the crush of the Hanoverians, who have just won the war, it seems, because they will show no mercy now.

Wounded, bleeding, and desperate, he stumbles upon what he believes to be a castle, and finds himself swept up by healers—and fever. His wound is grave, but they are relentless, as is the angel who helps tend him during his delirium. When he recovers somewhat, he wonders if he will ever learn the identity of the beauty who so delicately brought him from the brink of death itself…and is stunned when she is a very-much alive woman.

Danger at Every Turn

For Amalie and Bronan, theirs is a love forbidden by the Highlands. She is a thirty-five year-old widow of an earl, mother to a fifteen-year-old son, and he is several years her junior, of no social status whatsoever. The gap is insurmountable, and they know that the instant attraction must be ignored, no matter what their hearts say.

When the odds are against them at every turn, their love continues to find a way to survive, and thrive, in the wilds of Scotland. Even a ruthless duke intent on ruling everything cannot stop true love, or fate—if only love can survive the swing of a sword!

Will Amalie give in to the desire of her heart—or are the demands of society and the best thing for her son more important than even the call of true love?

Should Bronan forget the beauty who has captured his heart, knowing that she’s far above his station? Or should he pursue her with the same passion that he can no longer hide within his heart?

"The Highlander’s Widow" is a standalone historical Scottish romance novel of approximately 60,000 words. No cliffhangers, pure content and an awesome happily ever after, guaranteed to ignite your imagination in one sitting.

Dowager Countess Amalie Inverkeith has lived a sad life the last five years with her husband dying for the Jacobite cause and her now nearly 15 year old son growing up sullen, deserted by his father, the earl. But a thriller of a dangerous adventure comes her way when her son comes home from war injured and with no doctor, she hurries with him to her friend at Duncliffe, who she knows has healers. She has been shown to her room when she looks out the window and sees another wounded soldier trying to make it to the stables. She goes out to get help for him. Bronan Ludlow is a soldier with a shoulder wound similar to Alec's. He thinks Amalie is an angel. When he finds he's still alive, he dedicates his life to her. She is encouraged by the prophecy of Merrick, cook/ healer/ seerer of Duncliffe. Soon after she recognizes the love she has for Bronan even though he is a commoner and quite a bit younger. A fire started by raiders forces her to allow Bronan to save her and Alec. The three are off to face many trials and temptations, evil and darkness balanced by aid and light, always with the taboo love between them a threat. Loved the relationship that grows between Alec and Bronan! Makes a great page turner! I volunteered this review from an ARC.

Amalie saw her son covered in blood that his legs gave way and she felt for a pulse it was funny but it was present. She called him up from the floor putting his arm around her shoulders to take him to his room. He had been missing for four days and had apparently gone to war are the uprising as they were calling it her maid was going to call the doctor that he had gone to the front to help tend the wounded also so she decided to take into a healer both her steward and her maid were aghast at this idea Amalie had spoken and they hurried to get everything ready. After they got to Duncliffe and the healers were working on Alec Amalie looked out the window and saw someone going to the stables she went out to the stables to see who this person was and she discovered another man who had been seriously wounded and she assumed he was from the war. She got help and brought them into the house and they put him in another room and told the healers so that when they got through with Alex they could start on him. His name was Bronan he thought he had died and Amalie was an angel. To find out what happens to the three of them and how their lives turn out you have to read the book. It's a good book...

Dowager Countess Amalie Inverkeith's son has been badly wounded in the last battle. She must get him help so they head for Duncliffe Manor and it's healers. While the healers are taking care of her son, she is shown to her rooms to get some rest. She is looking out the window when she spots a man creeping and stumbling across the lawn and realizes he is hurt. She goes to him.
Bronan Ludlow is wounded and trying to find someone to help him when he sees Duncliff. He is also taken care of by the healers and an angel who helps tend to him. The angel is Amalie.
This is a wonderful story. There is action and romance. A love that cannot be. She is a thirty-five year-old widow of an earl, mother to a fifteen-year-old son, and he is several years her junior, of no social status whatsoever. What will happen when her son meets Bronan? And what will happen when it's time for them to go home? Somehow their love continues to survive. But for how long?
The plot is well constructed. The story is very well written. The characters are fleshed out.
I voluntarily received this book and I'm voluntarily posting a review. My opinion is entirely my own.

Lady Amalie Inverkeith, her son came stumbling into the room with blood, wounds and dirt all over him. He had left and went to battle but he was too young at fifteen. She had lost her husband five years ago, also in a battle. She felt so alone. There was no Dr. available, they had all marched off to war. She dashed to Duncliff Manor and her friend Marguerite, the Countess, she had a healer and her son needed one if he was going to live. While waiting to hear how her son was she looked out the window and saw an injured man move towards the stables. She ran to the stables and brought him into the house. He was at Culloden as was her son.
Bronan Ludlow was a soldier and had been for sixteen years. He ran away from home at thirteen and Laird McLeary let him live at the Manse and train.
The author wrote a beautiful story, full of intrigue, intimidation and fear. Amalie and Bronan had a lot of hurtles coming their way. The characters were believable and likeable. You can watch as Alex, her son, matures though out the book. How he supports his mother. The writing was excellent, moved smoothly, and had an even pace. I was very glad I got a chance to read it.

Amalie has been widowed for 5 years and never considered that she might fall in love again but when her son Alec came home injured from the war, she immediately took him to her friend's estate where she knew there were healers and while there she happen to see a man out of the window she could see he was hurt and she went to help him he was so out of it he thought she was an Angel for a while he was under the care of the healers. Amalie realized that she was attracted to the injured man whose name was Bronan Ludlow. She, Alec and Bronan went through some very suspenseful and adventurous times during their time together. Enjoyed the story line. I was given an ARC from the author without obligation. I am providing an honest review.

Great finale to the series. Following the disaster at Cullodin, this story gives a small insight into the pain suffered by those left behind. Amalie heads to Duncliffe to request assistance from their healer for her teenage son injured in the battle. Bronan, also injured, stumbles upon Duncliffe by accident while he is fleeing the battlefield. Both characters feel an instant attraction to the other, but are unsure where it will lead. Fate steps in and what follows is a fast moving storyline, with a twist at the end you won’t see coming. I enjoyed this one very much.

This is a book of the tumultuous times in the Highlands. The fight at Culloden, having just occurred, life in Scottish homes were thrown into chaos, due to men, gone and yet to return.

The women held their homes together, coping with all sorts of situations, some due to the conflict, others due to unscrupulous men, trying to take advantage.

This story highlights the strength the women of this period had, as well as their resourcefulness.

It's a good read, I did enjoy it, with the drama and romance, intertwined.

The Highlander's Widow

This is, without a doubt, one of Emilia's best books! I love her details and story lines. There is a lot of action, honor, some greed and dishonesty and romance. Her books have so much feeling. I recommend this book to everyone who likes to read about the history of Scotland and Highlanders and the things that they had to go through in their life time.

There is adventure, danger, betrayal, twists with wonderful characters.
