A Post-Apocalyptic Harem

When a medical marvel meant to change the very essence of humanity as a whole was unveiled, it did indeed change everything, but not in a way anyone was anticipating. A virus raged wildly out of control, consuming the whole world, turning half of humanity into mindless zombies, and half of the survivors into a variety of new species known now as the inhumans. In the decades that followed, society slowly began to rebuild and reform around these new realities.

Up until very recently, life on Earth could almost appear normal, if you weren't in a particularly dangerous area. Unfortunately, that all changed when the virus, which had previously only affected humans, suddenly mutated and made the jump to inhumans. Now, the world is ripping itself apart again as an army of new, incredibly lethal variants of the undead roam the countryside, killing everything in their path. And now, the first winter since this latest development is falling across the land.

David was born in the decades after society collapsed, so he was well-suited to a life of having to travel often, scavenge for supplies, and fight the living dead (and sometimes the living). Over the past year, his outlook has slowly grown dimmer, and after the village he decides to spend the winter at falls, leaving him and just a few friends alone and outnumbered in the frozen wilderness, he has no idea how they're going to survive...

HAVEN contains several scenes of hot human-on-inhuman sex, as well as several scenes of violence.

Hello and welcome to my website!

I am Misty Vixen (not my real name obviously), and I imagine that if you’re reading this, you want to know a bit more about me.

In the beginning (late 2014), I was an erotica author. I wrote about sex, specifically about human men banging hot inhuman women. Monster girls, alien ladies, paranormal babes. It was a lot of fun, but as the years went on, I realized that I was actually striving to be a harem author. This didn’t truly occur to me until late 2019-early 2020. Once the realization fully hit, I began doing research on what it meant to be a harem author. I’m kind of a slow learner, so it’s taken me a bit to figure it all out.

That being said, I’m now a harem author!

Just about everything I write nowadays is harem fiction: one man in loving, romantic, highly sexual relationships with several women. Nowadays, I tend to write more human on human stuff, but I still have a lot of non-human ladies in mind for the future, so if that’s your thing then stick around.

I’d say beyond writing harems, I tend to have themes that I always explore in my fiction, and they encompass things like trust, communication, respect, honesty, dealing with emotional problems in a mature way…basically I like writing about functional and healthy relationships. Not every relationship is perfect, but I don’t really do drama unless the story actually calls for it. In total honesty, I hate drama. I hate people lying to each other and I hate needless rom-com BS plots that could have been solved by two characters having a two minute conversation.

This is one of the weaker "worlds" that Misty Vixen has created. Too many things were practical and didn't make sense. The relationships between the characters and the sex were all pretty much the same as her other books but there wasn't any practicality to this world. This is a world were a virus has created zombies and there are supernatural creatures (giant women, lizard women, cat women -called jags). Along with zombies some of those other supernatural creatures have started to turn into the undead as well. The main character is just trying to find a place to be safe over the winter. He meets a bunch of different supernatural girls (which he has a thing for) and has sex with them along the way, all while trying to stay alive. The practical part I didn't like is that nobody seems to know how to survive in this world. The MC keeps going place to place to scavenge food. He also has to try and scavenge ammo, clothes and medical equipment. This does not seem practical. Who is going to make more ammo? Who is going to can more food? People can't get by just by finding someone else's left over stuff. The girls he was with barely had any food of ammo, but they did have lube with them so they could have sex? I liked the characters, but I couldn't get over the impracticality of it all.

Quit reading on the first page

This made me quit reading on the first page:

"His breath was foaming on the air" - what?

"He wasn't lost per say" - no miss Vixen, it is 'per se'

Seeing how many books there are in this series, I suffered through this first book in hopes that it would get better, but I couldn't handle any more after the first quarter of the second book. It's just dreadful. Maybe it gets better, but I simply can't bear to go any further. This is a lengthy review, but I write it as someone who really wanted to enjoy the book. I gave it a shot after seeing so many positive reviews on Goodreads and recommendations on Reddit, but I simply can't understand the love for it, let alone having the tolerance to go through the whole series.

Let's start with the main character. I see other people complained about him being weak, but, at least to the point I made it to in the series, I didn't get that feeling. He's not some overpowered, unbeatable warrior, nor a complete moron that creates unnecessary, easily avoidable problems for himself. He's just a normal guy trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world, which is a nice breath of air. However, he's boring, bland, and has no personality beyond being a nice guy. He's not funny, charming, passionate, etc. He has less personality than an automated customer service line. What makes him desirable to the female characters, beyond having male genitalia and not being a racist dirtbag, is a complete mystery.

That brings me to my next complaint: the relationship building. There is practically no buildup to any of them. He just sort of stumbles into each of them, one at a time, and it takes anywhere from minutes to a few hours of interaction with each before they're in bed together. By far the longest amount of time the MC interacted with a female character before bedding them was around a week, most of which was described in general "off camera" fashion with little more told to the reader beyond that they enjoyed some guard duty shifts together. Furthermore, the girls are introduced one after another with very little "in world" time passing. He's basically meeting a new girl every other day. The only thing they seem to admire about him is that he's a nice guy and cares about them. That's it. The bar is unbelievably low for all of them. There's no romantic buildup between him and any of his partners. It's mostly something along along the lines of "I haven't had any d for a while. Wanna do it?" I've seen stronger relationship building in porn without plot. It's incredibly unsatisfying and feels like it was written by a high school boy that would rather skip writing the whole relationship process and get right to writing about the sex.

That being the case, you'd think that the sexual scenes would be make up for some of these short comings. The length of each encounter varies, but never feels unreasonably long, which is nice. However, the narration and dialog of the main character during these scenes is just awful. The author seems to have only two words in their vocabulary for the space between a woman's legs. They lean really hard on the P word, constantly using it to remind the reader over and over again, often in consecutive sentences, which orifice the MC is in and what they're pounding. The other being the V word, which personally is such a turn off in the moment and just sounds juvenile. The MC's blandness is especially apparent in his dirty talk, which is as spicy and flavorful as plain oatmeal. Most of his "in the moment" verbal skills are limited to variations of the trifecta of "Oh f***!", "F*** [insert name here]!", and "I'm going to blow!". You'd get more satisfaction reading the transcript of the aforementioned porn video than reading through the intimate scenes of this book (and at least the first 25% of book 2).

The activities themselves aren't over-the-top or unnatural (at least given the setting), but the aspects of them are. The females, of course, are all bi and have no reservations about being with one another. Not one of them needs to warm up to the idea or is apprehensive about performing any sexual act with the MC or any of the other girls. In a world where inhumans are constantly the victim of prejudice, you'd expect more insecurities from the party and each newcomer. It might be the ideal situation men would kill to be in, but it makes for poor storytelling. It would've been better for each girl to have more individualism in their sexuality and forwardness. Instead, the only individuality you'll find in the female characters is their respective races. The MC is able to have multiple sexual encounters with various parties each day and can effortlessly climax five times over the course of a few hours. Despite all of the fantasy elements of the story, the sexuality of the characters is the most unrealistic part of it. It doesn't seem unusual to anyone. Though the book mentions that the virus eliminated all STDs and made many people infertile, it says nothing about increasing libido, recovery, etc, and isn't even lazily explained by something such as "the virus also increased everyone's desire".

The concept of the book's setting, taking place in a post-apocalyptic world with zombies and inhumans, the latter of which are now mutating into specialized zombies, creates a unique world that is comparable to what you'd get if you took the Left 4 Dead video game and added fantasy races like giants, cat people, and lizard folk. The idea has a lot of potential that is largely wasted. There is little plot beyond day trips scavenging and quickly bedding women. There are no villains outside of some nameless bandits, no internal turmoil, and no character growth through book one. The greatest source of conflict is the environment and the hostile creatures it holds, which could be enough if the MC had a goal or destination to work towards, but instead the only objective is to just survive. There's seemingly no escalation of plot. The entire story essentially feels like the MC is just going around doing side quests in between rolls in the hay with the various women fawning all over him for simply existing.

While I'm not factoring the quality of the audiobook into my score, I can't help but point out it's flaws as well. It is read by a single voice actor, which is almost always to the detriment of books with sexual content. Ellory Lane does a good job creating variance in each female's voice, which helps to makes up for the lack of individuality in the writing, but her performance of the male characters leaves a lot to be desired. Every guy more-or-less sounds the same, and her acting of the MC sounds eerily similar to Taylor Tomlinson's impression of a generic college guy in her stand-up comedy bits. It amplifies the generic and uninteresting nature of the MC, escalating him to a level of boring that forces you to roll your eyes ever time she speaks for him. The inflections she uses while narrating will raise your blood pressure. She regularly ends sentences by stretching the last word out an extra fraction of a second and using a slightly higher tone, which gives the impression that it will be followed by a conjuction like "but" and an accompanying subordinate clause, but it doesn't. It's simply the end of the sentence. Most of the narration also sounded like she was reading it for the first time, and was unsure of how much of it should've been read. The tone is the same whether she is describing a mundane task or the characters fighting for their lives. Her narration is borderline rage inducing, but I'll admit that it seems she improved in the quarter of book 2 I endured. Still, it would've been far better to hire a male voice actor for perform the male dialogue, and preferably one that had better narration skills.

In short, I saw several recommendations for Haven, as well as Misty Vixen's "RAW" and "Our Own Way", but I found Haven to be such a disappointment that I can't see myself giving her other works a shot. It doesn't have a plot to make a feasible fantasy or survival book, nor the characters or relationships necessary for a cozy slice of life story. It tries to bridge both genres while effectively neglecting everything readers look for in each.

At my request I received a copy of this audiobook in order to give a fair and unbiased review.

Genre: Steamy Harem a post apocalyptical zombie world with lots of sex

Power dynamics in harem: The girls actively pursue the MC and doesn't mind the others doing the same. MC respects all, but has final say.
Explicit/adult material: Frequent hot and explicit. Impregnation, panther girl, reptile girl, semi-giant girl, consent.

Summary:
David has lived in a post apocalyptical world all his life. But this last year has been crazy. New strains of monsters and always on the move.
When his new home is again attacked he meets some sexy and competent ladies starving for a good fuck from a man that won't screw them over.
Together they start rebuilding their life, creating their own little Haven.

Narrators
Voice diversity: To me the voices were similar outside of gender. But I never had trouble following who said what.
Pacing and intonation: Ellory Lane tells the story incredibly well and I was fully immersed and at times impressed with how alive the story was.
Sex scenes: So very well done.
Overall: 4.5 / 5 stars.

The book’s strengths.
- The sex scenes of this book are very very hot. It clearly is focused on sex and does it well.
- The girls are very varied and the appeal of each is natural. Both physically and in personality.
- I like the premise of a good guy in a harsh post apocalyptic world building something good with his sexy ladies.
- The narration

The book’s weaknesses.
- It is very full on sex. I would love fewer girls and more character development.
- The girls eagerness to share the MC feels very fast to me.

Overall: 4/5 stars
This is perhaps the hottest, most sex heavy, but well written harem book I have read so far. If you are looking for hot women that constantly bang the MC, you find it here.

This is well-written, and the MC is neither an OP alpha or a whiny beta, just a decent guy (with better-than average luck) making his way in an apocalyptic environment. This would generally get a 4-star review from me, but there is a lot of very detailed sex in this which detracted somewhat from my reading experience.

I write reviews for books like this as I don't want to put people off who are looking for this sort of thing. I was taking a chance on this one (yay KU!) as the author's name suggests this sort of erotica (and a perusal of her back catalogue confirms this) and I will probably read the next one, albeit with a bit of skimming.

That last part is the key recommendation, regardless of the number of stars I give it. I don't bother even finishing books that I would rate a 1 or 2, so even if I give something a 3, if the story/characters interest me enough despite the flaws I perceive in the book I will generally continue to follow it. At least until it loses that interest, which does happen even to things I initially rate well.

This book is absolutely filthy. That isn't derogatory mind you, but there is a lot of sex in it. The author really likes to use the P word. Sometimes the phrasing gets a bit unintentionally humorous. Characters do seem to talk about how great sex is and how great each other are, like a bit too much. But all in all it's not bad. The characters themselves are fine. I'll be checking the next one out.

One thing I like is that the writing really focuses on the traits that make characters non-human, contrasting how they feel, etc. The audio narrator's voice work is lush, but her normal narration has this habit of emphasizing the middle of a sentence weird.

Boring! MC is a simple in a BIG way!

Do not waste your time on this story the main male character is a total wimp. The romantic sex scenes are boring and read like some 12 year-old wet dream. This is supposed to be a post This is supposed to be a post apocalyptic world but they're using modern phrases such as he put a cap in someone's head. That is just 1 of many modern phrases that is in this story that doesn't make sense in this type of genre. My main gripe with this story is that the male character is so weak1 reviewer said that they were glad the story wasn't about some Strong alpha type male And I just find that as crap because most of stories you want a strong male lead and then many women looking for that strong male lead to be the protector And I just find that as crap because most of stories you want a strong male lead and then many women looking for that strong male lead to be their protector and savior. And you can tell that this story was written by a woman who wants the females to be the strong type and I'll be the 1st 1 to admit I'm male so I want the male to be the strong type but in the animal kingdom the females don't go to some weak male they go to the strongest male the strongest provider the strongest protector that is just the way of the natural order of things. I won't be looking for the sequel to the story I won't be reading anymore this book was boring the action was boring and they were constantly way over their heads and even when the mail was asked to help he was always the weakest it was always the females who were the strong ones the confident ones the secure ones this guy was a pathetic loser. That's really the bottom line of this review the male lead was just a loser don't waste your time on this story find something better.

Solid First Entry

Man I got to say I took a leap on this first book, and I'll gladly say it did not disappoint. Hitting it off with a MC that has to survive in a world filled with monsters and danger we really get to feal the daily struggles he and companions have to go through to survive, from finding supplies to finding a safe place to hunker down this book coverd the feal of the world around them pretty well. Also it gets Steamy on several occasions and is done in a natural kind of way and not forced for no reason like in other books. Most characters are written pretty well but I can see that we will get more in the next few books of the series, but man they get really down and dirty which I will honestly say made me blush cuz I was really surprised on how hot it was.(Cait). But all in all I love the characters and their personalities and little quirks which makes them feal real and genuine. I will say though that the story moves pretty fast which is not bad per-say but I would have like too see more detail and time spent in the daily mission they go on and not just skip a lot. Also would have been cool to see more hand to hand combat and less shooting because I'm assuming ammo is a very important resource. As a first book read by Misty Vixen I have to say this was a solid book 1 and cant wait to read more of the series, this is an easy 5/5.

What I liked-
Grounded, mature and an intimate vibe to the relationships. Near perfect balance of emotional and physical gratification in the sex scenes.
Well written characters and fun interactions.
Reads more like a personal journey of discovering hope and one’s meaning in life, rather than the typical survival novel.
Good enough to remind me of the Anime/novel/manga Spice & Wolf (Probably the highest praise I can give esp. for a harem series, considering that is among my fav adventure/romance series of all times, bar none)

What I didn’t-
Honestly nothing I can think of without coming off as unreasonable. Everything is so well balanced that I’d have to start criticising the genre itself (harem/adventure/non-human erotica) to point out any negatives.
Maybe a better quality cover art. A sexy high quality one would do this amazing novel the much needed justice.

Overall- 9/10 Handsdown among the best. A must read for non-human romances and harem fans.

This series is in the zombie survival slash harem lit genre. And in actual fact scenes of foraging and fighting undead are alternated at about equal frequency with sex scenes involving the main character and a group of women of various fantasy races that he gathers around him. It doesn't come across as misogynistic, with strong female characters, and the story isn't badly written, but it's still a bit of an odd combination, to the extent where I felt more concerned for the characters survival and safety than the characters seemed to feel themselves, just wandering around willy nilly with a few clips of ammo and shacking up in random places to get it on. It's hard by definition to judge a story like this on its realism level, but I still had the feeling that it was a bit too lacking, or perhaps I just don't like zombie horror stories.

I’m very glad I gave this series a try

Awesome series. I’ve read a lot of harem fantasy/sci-fi and I know how hard it is to find books were the male lead isn’t a dominating asshole who treats the women like slaves, or ones where the guy is a simp. This Author does a great job striking that balance. It’s streaming hot and has feel good moments.

Haven book one.

What I liked about this book was the post apocolyptic zombie disease angle. It had good character development and plot. Harem is putting it mildly. The only thing I didn't like was the slight lack of proofreading.

Very interesting

This was a great start to the series. This story has a but more, in terms of plot and character development as compared with the parasexual series. There's a little of exploration of the environment and plenty of action to balance the character development and intimate scenes.

Erotic and lively

An interesting spin on the survivor genre where the MC isn't overpowered, has down to earth concerns and feelings, and the characters and world building are solid. Yes... definitely a Mature rating series but that makes it fun!
