I've been an avid reader of romance and paranormal romance since I was 12 years old (my poor Dad definitely didn't realize what I was reading)...meaning I've saturated myself with all genres of PNR for 25+ years now.
Thus, I have exhausted so many of my favorite PNR authors series, back lists, and sub-genres, e.g., Lora Leigh's Breed series, Lucy Monroe, Katie Reus/Suzanne Wright's various shifter series, Laurann Dohner's New Species and Mating Heat series, Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series, Thea Harrison's Elder Races series, Christine Feehan's Leopard People series, Aline Hunter's Alpha and Omega series, and so many others - literally hundreds of books.
A lot of these books deal with Omegas and Alphas - a theme that's been around forever.
The reason I mention this (because, yes, I realize this all has nothing to do with this book), is because I was accused on a separate Omegaverse books series review of being uninformed and not knowing what I was talking about when I expressed my opinion that that other series felt like a copy of another one.
And to that I say...
Cause, oddly enough, THIS Omegaverse book (while sharing the typical Omegaverse themes and terms) was it's OWN book. It had it's own story and own path and I enjoyed reading it.
Because I can tell the difference, thank you very much.
But I digress. Moving on.
I really enjoyed the mixture of Omegaverse and mafia (another favorite trope of mine of which I have also read extensively) here and I thought it was very well done. I also loved a lot of the psychological elements here - as with a lot of Omegaverse books and books dealing with other animalistic/PNR based characters - and I thought the author wrote a really solid story here.
I look forward to reading more of her stuff.

Edit: I'm upping this to five stars because I'm already having the urge to reread it. I don't always feel like rereading books. Idk something about this story really calls to me; I love it.
4.25 stars. This was seriously so good. The suspense was intense and the sex was scorching hot. I got lost in story, and there's almost nothing better than that.
If you like the Omegaverse genre and Addison Cain, you'll probably like this book.
Organized crime goes along with Omegaverse really well. I've long thought a Russian Alpha would make sense in an Omegaverse story and it was pulled off here.

I loved that the heroine was a non-virgin and sexually experienced. The Alpha didn't make a big deal about it either. That was refreshing. Also liked that she was sarcastic. I lol'd when she said "Sounds like a personal problem." haha. It was nice having a heroine that knew how to physically defend herself against Alphas. It's explained how she learned this skill too. She was well-balanced when it came to her strengths and vulnerabilities.
Nikolai was a great alphahole. In the beginning he was a HUGE asshole but he 100% redeemed himself. His loving streak came out towards the end and it was pretty swoon worthy. The author did an amazing job with him. I hope she writes more alphaholes ;-)
I appreciated the attention to detail the author gave this story, and the characters. The dialogue was realistic, and the mannerisms and behaviors all made sense.
I loved the psychologist! He was so funny and portrayed realistically. Again, I really appreciate all the attention to detail that went into the psychologist's interactions with December and Nikolai.
Ok, while I found the moment when Nikolai brushed December's hair touching, one thing stuck out to me.... He was brushing her damp hair with a boar bristle brush. That's a huge no no. Boar bristle brushes are only to be used on dry hair. Hair is at it's weakest when it's wet and damp. A boar bristle brush will seriously damage wet or damp hair. I know this detail is insignificant, lol. I just really cringed at the thought of a boar bristle brush being run through damp hair.

Is this book perfect? No, it's not, but the minor flaws did not detract from my enjoyment of the story. Flaws I should probably mention (but they really didn't bother me) were:
1) Length. The book was probably a little bit too long. I enjoyed the suspense-filled journey so much it honestly didn't bother me. * I should add I would much rather read a full-length book on the longer side than a 90-120 page novella.
2) Plot complexity. The plot was solid (which I appreciated), but I would have enjoyed more complexity. I enjoyed the story so much anyway, I wasn't bothered by this. This is really a minor, nit picky complaint.
3) World-building.
edit: I should qualify, there absolutely is world-building in this book. What I meant in my original comment was that the world didn't feel expansive. There is definitely a closed-in feeling, which mirrors December's experience. This isn't a flaw or a complaint. Just something readers should be aware of.

There's always room for the author to expand and add more world-building in the upcoming books. One thing I hope that will be explored in future books is the morally gray area of December now being . Even if she is morally gray and doesn't have a problem with it, that's ok - I just want the moral complexities of this situation to be explored.

I'm really thrilled to have found a few new authors that are writing quality Omegaverse stories. I was in a bit of book hangover after reading Addison Cain's Alpha's Claim series, and I'm not going to lie, her bite sized series (Wren's Song for example) aren't very satisfying. This was a satisfying read.

ETA - I loved this just as much on my second read-through as I did on my first. Nikolai is a dominant alpha but one who treats his omega with respect and kindness. December is one tough cookie who can't be kept down. A truly good book that I'm happy to recommend.
This is one amazing debut novel
Calling all M/f omegaverse lovers! The Sacred Omegas - December is an absolutely fantastic story and one you really should read. The majority of the plot is set within a small number of rooms/buildings, so we don't get to experience much of the outside world. However some very good world building at the start of the story helped set the scene, along with conversations, memories and the dynamic between characters.
I found the mafia/omegaverse blend to be both intriguing and captivating, the two aspects worked really well together. Along with both of these aspects was a romantic suspense element. These wove together to produce a well written and engaging story. One that easily held my attention both with it's interesting plot as well as it's good pace.
December and Nikolai totally made this book work for me. I loved both characters, December with her strength, fortitude and tenacity and Nikolai with his dominance, perseverance and tenderness. Whilst Nikolai is not a man to be trifled with, and though he made some mistakes with December at first, he was an alpha hero in every sense of the word. In general he treated December with respect, displaying a level of empathy not always found in his dynamic.
December experiences some harrowing times during this book, there are potential triggers around sexual assault. However these scenes involve secondary characters, rather than the hero, so whilst this is a dark romance it isn't at the very blackest end of the spectrum. I have to admit that I had been lulled into a false sense of security, given Nikolai's almost gentle treatment of December, so these passages really did knock me sideways. What further impressed me was the very genuine feelings that plagued December afterwards. She wasn't miraculously 'cured' nor was she gagging for her alpha within minutes of being rescued. The lasting effects of her trauma and her responses to them felt very real.
The connection between Nikolai and December was very convincingly portrayed. The passion between them was incredibly hot but, more than that, I believed in their emotions too. It was only too easy to accept their feelings for one another.
Whilst this followed the general 'rules' of omegaverse works, it still had a fresh and fairly unique feel to it too. If you're unfamiliar with the world, this book reads very much like a contemporary romance, but where the alpha and omega release pheromones that the other can scent. The omega will have heats and produce slick (lubrication) in response to growls from the alpha male. The alpha male produces a knot at the base of his penis, much like dogs and wolves do, that ties him to the omega. They DO NOT 'shift' or change into wolves/animals, they are more like modified humans.

Lord why didn't I read more reviews before starting this?!!! Whyyyyyyyy??
The h is raped.....repeatedly over days by a lot of different men. It's graphic.....it's horrific.......
*scenes of assault as said in the blurb doesn't cover the horror.

December decides to steal some meds as she hasn't been feeling well for a while. Unfortunately she's caught and sent to the holding cell of the mafia leader Nikolai Petrovski. While there she attracts the attention of an Alpha and when he attacks her she fights back thus drawing the attention of the big boss himself. The Alpha boss makes the shocking discovery that December is an Omega on suppressants.To pay back what is owed and for the trouble she's caused he proposes a deal.....he'll act as a mate to her if she'll give him a child, he'll then free her to be with another Alpha after. Unbeknownst to December Nick has no intentions of letting his bratty Omega go. But rising to the top of the city's crime syndicate came with enemies and before Nick can cement his claim his Omega is taken and brutalized. The road to recovery is a long and hard one but Nick is determined to make it to the other side.I

1) I think the H would be considered an antihero, he's a bad guy through and through. He thinks December should be grateful that he didn't send her to a pleasure house to work off her debt as he usually would.
2)During their initial time together I didn't like his treatment of December
3)The one thing I despise in an Alpha/Omega book is if the Omega makes slick for any Alpha that growls at her....and that is exactly what happens here. The Alphas who took her caused her body/dynamic to betray her, to me that made the entire ordeal worse
4) The h is held for days as Alphas abuse her repeatedly,they even force a claiming on her
5) Eventually she's able to save herself as she finds something else to fight for
6) I appreciated that the situation wasn't glossed over, she had a long and hard road to recovery
7) I found there were actually few conversations between the mcs throughout the entire book. Lots of internal monologue not enough dialogue
8) The book was way too long
9)There were thankfully some sweet moments in the aftermath, the H really did try though he made some foolish and of course high handed choices
*I hare reminders of the pasts of my mcs, I don't need to know in the middle of oral that you'd had it many times before. I don't need to know in the middle of a handy that her experience is quite clear.....some things I just don't NEED to know
All in all everyone's tastes are different, this was just not my preferred reading material. To me December already had a hard early life....I hate when tragedy keeps piling on the h. Given that the next book contains a similar assault warning it seems this author won 't be for me.

This is one of those reviews that can be difficult to write. But I’m keeping it brief. I’m not going into detail or quoting passages. Once I get on my soapbox it can be hard to drag me down.
This has so many brilliant reviews. It appears almost everyone loves it. So in cases like this I assume the fault lies with me.
I liked the bones of the book. But it was long so so long. Now don’t get me wrong here I love a book I can get lost in provided it holds my attention. And that’s the problem here. This just didn’t. I skimmed a lot of it.
There’s very little world building giving it a very claustrophobic feel. That actually works well and mirrors the time we spend with December.

I think I'm moving on up the omegaverse corporate ladder because did I just read and enjoy a dark, dystopian, mafia, alpha-boss romance that's also an omegaverse?! Say what!!!
Before you even consider picking up this book please consider the TWs; this book gets DARK.
Ok, what do I say? Uhhh...the FMC doesn't know she's an Omega. Surprise! She's got an attitude I can get behind. The MMC is a brutish yet refined Alpha who's actually a teddy bear.
Can it be a marriage of convenience without a marriage???
Bottom line, everything is kinda romantic in a Stockholm indecent proposal type way and then BAM all darkness and trauma, then trauma healing & HEA (if you can make it there it's def worth it)
Is it spicy? Yup
Is it smutty smut smut? Yes...and not all in a good way but the majority yes :)
Before you even consider picking up this book please consider the TWs; this book gets DARK.

Wow, so many triggers so it's reader beware. The h is quite a survivor, and needs to if she's to recover from what the baddies do to her. The H is an Alpha, a brutal criminal but with her he soon learned to be careful. He genuinely cared for her, but his arrogance hurt her. It's a good view of Omegaverse mixed with Russian Mafia, so we get vicious killers, knotting, and blood and gore, mostly the poor heroine's. Too sad for me, it all felt a bit hopeless so my 5 star rating at my 1st read dropped to 4 on my 2nd - and final read.

Yes, I may be a little biased due to Omegaverse being my favourite genre but it really was wonderful.
It had all the best traits of a good Omegaverse story too. Purring alpha, estros, slick, huge dicks, dominating males, hot AF sex scenes just everything!

As the story went on, I realised that I was completely smitten with and awed by this character.
It brought out in me a fiercely protective streak and pride in my gender.
What we may lack in physical strength, we make up for in sheer grit, determination, resolve and passion.
We are fierce and not to be underestimated. Hear us roar!

One of the best in Omegaverse!
I absolutely LOVE this book! It's very well written and flows really well. You fall easily in love with the characters and the author really puts you through the wringer in parts of this book when it gets a bit dark.
However, there's a HEA and I just want to read more of December and Nicolai!

Enjoyable read in the omegaverse. Well written, in a similar vein to Addison Cain (where the Alphas are brutal folks and the poor heroine is brutalised and abused horrifically (not by the antihero!)

Although this is an Omegaverse book, it's rooted in a more realistic -- albeit dystopian -- world than is usual with this genre. I do want to warn potential readers that there are several violent scenes of rape (and, no, the H doesn't perpetuate it; I can't believe I have to say that).
When Bratva Boss Nikolai comes across wild child December, he realizes what she does not: that she's an omega close to heat. Blackmailing her into staying with him, the two begin a push-pull relationship that's soon complicated by her special abilities: she can see the future, and that future doesn't look good for Nikolai.
There's a lot to like about this book: Nikolai, although a criminal, doesn't harm December and treats her with far more decency and respect than most. December is also an atypical Omega: a strong, kickass young woman who saves herself much more often than her Alpha does. I also appreciated that (rare for this genre), the rapes had mental and physical effects that didn't just go away.
I do agree with other reviewers that this was too long; personally, I preferred the cabin romance-like atmosphere of the first part of the book, when the two were getting to know each other, to the second, which was more action-driven. I also agree that the writing was at times stilted (calling the MC some version of "the male" and "the female" was alienating). In addition, the final threat wasn't all that interesting since the . Finally, the descriptions of the rapes were simply torture-porn: authors think they're writing something edgy or substantial and they're...not.

Creative omegaverse story. The hero presented as a proper gentleman but head of the bravta. The heroine was strong yet vulnerable like an omega. It was also interesting that she was not a virgin.
For the story, I felt while long — the pace was too slow for the little that transpired, in fact — the book lacked in character and situation development. The reader knew little to nothing of the hero’s and heroine’s families, where they came from, any ties to other people, friendships, etc. there was very little interaction with other characters. Also, there was little provided about their world, little scenery description. What was this distopia, if there was one? Also, the hero did not come across as the head of his bravta. He could just as well have been a businessman based on the lack of detail around any of his criminal dealings.
The author overly used common nouns instead of pronouns when referring to the MCs, ad nauseum — the male, the alpha, the man, the little female, the little woman, the girl, the omega, etc. Not sure what was meant to be conveyed with this style, but it rang false, bizarre.
Still, a good read if you want something different than the typical omegaverse, dystopic tale.

Devoured in a day - unique addition to the Omegaverse.
Omegaverse plus Mafia? Sign me up. This was a fresh take on the Omegaverse, with a well-developed world that felt both familiar and alien. December's omega traits have been repressed by technology that's failing after the fall of her city to the crime syndicates. She's unlucky enough to end up in the mafia's holding pens, but lucky in drawing the attention of one of the city's main alphas, Nikolai.
The story's told from both December's and Nikolai's points of view, which I really liked as it gave me a lot of insight into Nikolai's character. He's a crime boss and he's in the middle of a tense situation, so some of his decisions come off as overly harsh, but seen from his point of view, they're fair and smart decisions. December has a couple of foolhardy moments, but when you see things from her perspective, and understand why she's a sacred omega, she never quite edges over into the TSTL-trap that sometimes makes romance heroines unlikeable.
I'm very much looking forward to more in this series!

It's not often that a freshman author hits it out of the park like Merel Pierce did. She took the Omegaverse and made it her own, and made it work within her own framework.
I think that she did a really fantastic job at creating tension in the story. Not only did she create that tension, she gave us enough of a break from it that we could catch our breath and ready for the next bit without feeling overwhelmed by what was happening. That takes some true skill.
I thought that December and Nikolai worked well together as well as apart. December is smart and strong, and willing to fight when necessary. Nikolai is smart and sneaky, but he's so protective and caring. There pretty much is nothing that he wouldn't do to make sure that December is safe and happy.
I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series.

Just a fantastic read. I was a little more than half way through when I knew I would re-read this book immediately after I finished. That hasn't happened in a long time. I'm looking forward to exploring other worlds by this author now. Again, something that doesn't happen very often.

Awesome combination of a mafia story and Omegaverse. Love Nikolai! Story is very graphic so be prepared because the author doesn’t spare any details about her abuse.

With the state of the world, I find myself reading a lot of difference romance novels to distract myself. So when this book popped up on Maddy’s review I decided to give this one a short. Why not use my Kindle Unlimited subscription after all?
This book is a Omegaverse novel with a lot of the typical tropes associated with this sort of world. The novel doesn’t shy away from the inherent inequality and the extreme sexual politics Omegaverse implies. No punches pulled here! I was forewarned that this was a dark book but it was still darker than I prefer.
The heroine goes through some horrific stuff in the 2nd third of the book which I didn’t like at all. It was a little too graphic for me - others who know what they are getting into when a book advertises a “dark romance”.
Nonetheless, the latter half of the book redeemed the book for me. The couple actually work through trauma and their relationship (within the alpha/omega dynamic). I didn’t expect that but appreciated that. The hero - who started out being quite an ass - ended up being quite great. It was the alpha trope done right - better than I’ve seen a lot of authors do it.
In the end I am going with three stars only because of my personal tastes here. The book was strong and well written - and fans of the trop who know what they are getting into will like this much more.

I wanted to rate it a one star because of the violence that she suffered through but I really liked that she goes apeshit. I think the cover is totally gross and the story is the typical omega story but she is special in her own right and there is a side mob plot line.

This is one of the best Omegaverse stories I’ve had the pleasure to read. It was definitely on the dark side. It is also under the dystopian trope category. The author has created a well-developed world where society is run by various criminal factions, after governments have failed due to wars. Shifting for herself on the streets, December, the heroine, finds herself in a holding cell after being caught stealing medicine from a drugstore. Although she thinks she is ill from some unknown disease, the Alpha whose jail she finds herself in knows better. She is an Omega, about to enter her first heat and he, Nikolai, plans to take advantage of her plight while he has her in his grip.
December is very well written. The plot is excellent, it’s rippling with emotion, with December’s pain and her fear of Alpha Nikolai. Danger and intrigue continue to weave their way through this story. Although she is no longer adrift on the dangerous streets, living under Nikolai’s roof brings exposure to his enemies and much risk for both of them.
Nikolai and December continue through most of the story to test each other’s limits. I like that the author created an Omega character that was firm of personality. She had an inner-strength that I found admirable, although sometimes she didn’t always use common sense about when to unleash that inner-strength. Many times it got her into trouble with Niko and earned her a spanking!
I mentioned this story was quite dark. Just be aware (as the author herself mentions) there are triggers in this story involving physical and mental abuse, rape, and torture of the main female character. None of these is perpetrated by the main male character, however.

I read a lot of omegaverse stories and when asked to read an ARC of this one, I jumped at the chance. I decided to write this review because, this was an amazing story.
Ms. Pierce has made her own niche in this genre. This story made me feel everything. I wanted to throw something, cry, laugh and claim my hubby throughout the story. Sometimes at the same time.
To be honest, I was worried that the main character's name would make her a flighty, air headed Omega that made stupid decisions in the name of freedom. December did none of that. I've been reading some mafia romances and I worried that Nikolai would be a check the boxes, mafia guy. He was complex.
The omegaverse elements were there and the heat factor was scorching, but this could have been the first ever clean Omegaverse novel and still been amazing. My only critique is that I wanted graphic descriptions of some of the violence perpetrated by Nikolai and his gang( I can't say more without revealing spoilers).

My initial thought when finishing this book was, "This is great balance between Addison Cain's Alpha's Claim and Kathryn Moon's Sweet Omegaverse series." Specifically, it has several of the dark elements of Cain's world with kidnapping, rape, and severe mental struggles of the heroine. However, instead of uber-dominant alpha antihero, we have a sweet and doting hero in our male lead; he genuinely tries his best to accommodate his omega and is a good guy overall.
It has all the hallmarks of omegaverse tropes - dominant Alphas, compassionate Omega, heats, pregnancy, omegas-as-a-pawn, etc. But, what I enjoyed was that the author, Merel Pierce, still takes the time to world build and develop characters without succumbing to only tropes. It definitely still feels like it's own story, which is only aided by the Russian mafia and physic Omega additions to the plot. It is very well written; I don't remember any major grammar or editing issues.
Our female lead, December, is a good one - though I do wish she had more... idk, something. She's smart, intuitive, resilient, and very adaptable. She is feisty without being annoyingly defiant. I do appreciate that her inner monologue varies between "sh*t, I think I like him bc [legitimate reason]" and "dammit, this guy is an asshole for [legitimate reason]". It feels more real and interesting that some other omegaverse books I've read because it's not so streamlined. It's messy and changes as their relationship and outside challenges affect them, but doesn't depend on miscommunication as a plot point.
Our male, Nikolai, is definitely not an antihero, even though he's this big, bad mafia boss. He's an Alpha and thus has traits you'd expect. However, I do like the self awareness he has. He's not ruled by his emotions, nor his dynamic's drive to dominate any- and everything. He actually takes the time to think, empathize, and redirect his natural urges. It has all the hallmarks of omegaverse tropes - dominant Alphas, compassionate Omega, heats, pregnancy, omegas-as-a-pawn, etc. But, what I enjoyed was that the author, Merel Pierce, still takes the time to world build and develop characters without succumbing to only tropes. It definitely still feels like it's own story, which is only aided by the Russian mafia and physic Omega additions to the plot. It is very well written; I don't remember any major grammar or editing issues.
Our female lead, December, is a good one - though I do wish she had more... idk, something. She's smart, intuitive, resilient, and very adaptable. She is feisty without being annoyingly defiant. I do appreciate that her inner monologue varies between "sh*t, I think I like him bc [legitimate reason]" and "dammit, this guy is an asshole for [legitimate reason]". It feels more real and interesting that some other omegaverse books I've read because it's not so streamlined. It's messy and changes as their relationship and outside challenges affect them, but doesn't depend on miscommunication as a plot point.
Our male, Nikolai, is definitely not an antihero, even though he's this big, bad mafia boss. He's an Alpha and thus has traits you'd expect. However, I do like the self awareness he has. He's not ruled by his emotions, nor his dynamic's drive to dominate any- and everything. He actually takes the time to think, empathize, and redirect his natural urges. Wonderful story
This is an excellent, well written book by a great new author. I am sure it will not be the last. The story grabbed me from the very beginning and did not let me go until the end. I consumed it in one interrupted reading. Who needs sleep anyway? The Sacred Omegas is a fresh new take on the Omegaverse, combining it with the Russian Mafia, a slow burn romance and an HEA. I thoroughly enjoyed December and Nikolai's evolution as characters. I will be following Ms Pierce and eagerly looking forward to new releases.

I have not read alot of Omegas books but I really enjoyed this one. I loved the mafia alpha feel. I like the chemistry the H and the h had and how the h did not back down to H and stood her ground. Over all this was a very good book. I will be reading more by this author. Great job!!!

I really liked this omegaverse/mafia read. December is desperate to find some relief from a mysterious illness she has but is caught trying to steal from Nikolai. He discovers the truth about her what will happen when he tells her what he has planned for her? Fast-paced read with lots of drama and suspense. Off the charts chemistry, steamy and intense. The characters and the story really draw you in, I was hooked from beginning to end. I loved it!

DNF. The “Omega” swears like a sailor. I don’t really care so much about foul langage, but she’s suppose to be an Omega, a docile creature ruled by her instincts. Instead she’s petulant and defiant to a degree she seems immature and hard to like.

Omegas have such a shit lot in life!
I really enjoyed this one! Mafia (Russian) but omegaverse?! Yes! All the stuff i love in a story was in this! This was also very long. So glad the author didn’t break it up as a serial. So many authors would have.
