Imagine if everyone in America wanted the same thing.
Your plumber, the mail carrier, the folks next door, the girl at the coffee shop, cops, those who worship in churches, synagogues, and mosques, your favorite band. Your best friend.
They all want the same exact thing. They want to kill you.

Daniel O’Connor’s Canni is a glimpse into at a future that may be closer than we think. A time when no one can be trusted. When everyday citizens can turn into monsters without warning. As America begins to fall following a terror attack, a small band of friends make their final stand in Vegas. And Sin City is about to get a whole lot worse.

Remember... Your parents, your children, your spouse. They want to kill you….And you, them.

Daniel O'Connor was born, the youngest of five children, in Brooklyn, NY. He lost his mother to cancer, on her wedding anniversary, when he was four years of age, and then his father two years later. He lived with his grandmother until she passed when Dan was ten. Rather than purchase a clown mask and a chainsaw, he kept the demons at bay through books, movies, music - and writing.

During the recruitment process for a police career, Suffolk County, NY applicant investigators asked Dan how someone with such a difficult childhood managed to pass the drug, psychological and polygraph exams, along with the rigorous background check. Dan had a one word answer: Reading.
Upon completion of his highly decorated police career, Daniel moved to the southwest with his wife and two daughters. It is there that he wrote, using characters and scenarios developed with his late cousin Peter Randazzo, the dark love letter to old Brooklyn: SONS OF THE POPE. Daniel's second novel, CANNI, an intense thriller, was released on July 4th, 2019.

Daniel O'Connor has one goal. It is to spread THIS message to every child: "Please know that, no matter how alone you feel, nor how discouraged or impoverished you may be right now, you should focus on your dreams and disassociate yourself from people and situations that will drag you away from your goals. Drugs, drink, gangs, crime, self-mutilation, and the like will lead you down a dark and disastrous path from which you likely will never recover. Focus, work hard, be strong, and your dreams await you."

Everyone you know wants the same thing... they want to kill you.
Rob and Cash are on a road trip to Vegas with hopes of food, fun, and possibly even wedding bells. However, their vacation is derailed when a terror attack transforms the landscape of America into a fight for survival.
Daniel O'Connor's Canni is a glimpse into at a future that may be closer than we think. A time when no one can be trusted. When everyday citizens can turn into monsters without warning. As America begins to fall, a small band of friends and underground dwellers make their final stand in the tunnels beneath Vegas.
Cannis are not zombies. They are much worse. And Sin City is about to become more dangerous than ever before.

Well stating from the start I seem to be going against others with this one. I for one really enjoyed this different take on the zombie tale.
This one is a man made virus terrorist attack and the zombies are also different in the way they are also.
I love the way the plot and story line are written very well in a way you can see something like this being done today.
The characters have been fleshed out well and like the way they interact with each other.
I recommned reading and giving it a chance.

I voluntarily reviewed this complimentary digital book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my very own!

This was such a fun read!

America has been the subject of a terrorist attack, with a virus being unleashed across the country, infecting all its inhabitants. Now people are becoming cannibalistic, looking to attack and eat anyone who is within close distance. It is not clear when a person may “turn”, and people are no longer safe within the confines of their own homes.

The story revolves around a friend group who are nearing the end of a road trip, ending in Las Vegas. This trio meets a range of interesting and funny characters who are all learning to deal with this sudden and strange turn of events.

This was a compulsive read! It was like reading a screenplay and I could easily see this book becoming a TV show or a movie.

Would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good zombie story!

Thanks to NetGalley for a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a suspenseful, ‘oh no way is that going to happen’ kind of read! Twists and turns you can’t even imagine. This author has experimented in several genres and between ‘Sons of the Pope’ and this ‘Stranger than Stranger Things’ classic, you will not be disappointed. If you like Steven King and a dark mind, couple with a ‘wait for it’ sense of humor, you will NOT be disappointed! Read this!

I received this book from netgalley for review and could not have been more pleased. I found this book to have an excellent pace. Well developed characters and an absolutely riveting storyline. Though this is somewhat out of my usually reading line, I found it absolutely riveting. A definite must read for suspense, thriller, mystery, horror fans. A 2019 must read in my personal opinion.

I picked up the book a few days ago and I cannot put it down. The characterizations are so vivid, I feel like I am there and know these people. Some are just uncanni (spelled that way intentionally). I will update my review when I am finished, which shouldn't be too much longer.

Hilarious stoner zombie outbreak story written by a retired police officer. I found it especially fun because I also live near Las Vegas where the majority of the story is. I will be looking at the flood tunnels a lot differently now.

Really riveting reading.

While not my typical reading fare, I purchased this book based on the author’s first book I read and enjoyed, Sons of The Pope.

Read in a few sittings, this reviewer found Canni to be a real page-turner. Replete with a lot of action and suspense, it had my rapt attention throughout. The character development was so very well-done. Immersed in the colorful and descriptive words, you could almost feel as if the author was describing you or people you knew growing up.

The author has an uncanny knack for dropping cultural, pop or musical references at just the right time throughout. There are many Easter Eggs throughout. Written into the storyline casually, they are not (nor need to be) described in greater detail as to become burdensome. (Insert Dennis Miller, MNF reference here.) You either get them (good for you!), or miss them, but still get additional fleshing out of the story line, as intended.

With, perhaps, a nod to his prior career as a New York police officer, Mr. O’Connor relays details with great clarity and depth, not only making a good storyline better, but easier to follow as well.

Just back from vacation having read books by Steve Berry and Clive Cussler, I think I will remember this book longer than the two I read form those authors. (Extra bonus: the bookcover’s matte black finish reminded me of Metallica’s Black Album. Something I wouldn’t have had downloading the Kindle book format.)

I can easily see this book being made into a movie. It actually made me feel as if I was reading a movie.

Good stuff, once again from Mr. O’Connor.

What would happen if the zombie virus was temporary? How could you go back to your normal life after you had eaten your spouse, or your children? Several characters try to process what they've done, and work to stop it from happening again. There are quite a cast of characters in this book, from naked tunnel-dwellers to the President. They do find a "cure" that is unconventional, and everything works out in the end. Or does it?

I loved this book. I left it at work one night- I read during lunch- and really thought about making the hour drive each way to get it. It's that good!

I just finished the Novel Canni, by Daniel O’Connor, and the only thing I can think of is ” Dave’s not here” as stonners everywhere can rejoice. Nothing so relevant for the lovers of all things htc related has come out since Cheech and Chong. Even as I write this my head plays it’s own soundtrack , with Cyprus Hill playing ever so softly in the backgroud.

In the foreground an amazingly gripping story takes precedence over the humor as well as the social and political commentary of the book. A book that elopes The Walking Dead, The Dead Don’t Die, Cheech & Chong with a smidge of CNN. A combination that wouldn’t work in almost any cook book works smashingly in this novel. Why?

The answer is simple, good writing, well developed characters and great story telling. There is tension, fear, gore , humor, and more than a little marijuana. So basically, real life in an unreal situation.

This book takes you, not into the overdone and over-hyped post apocalyptic world, but a new world. A world of chaos, terror, fear, and a man made virus intent on destroying America. The America loved by some and despised by others comes under attack from terrorists dead set on destroying us. The weapon of choice, ourselves, and all the destruction we can create. Which turns out is a lot.

And while many , many others have tackled this theme, Canni offers 1 monumental difference. The world does not crumble at this hurdle of destruction, in fact it maintains the most crucial of our societies foundations. Police are still working, hospitals are still open and POTUS is still working to navigate this new threat. To some , this may be a no bueno, but for me it was one of my favorite aspects of the story. How the world keeps turning , the mundane, the annoying, the rights and wrongs as monsters claw everything in their path the fuck apart.

Now, I’ve been reading all genres of books for longer than I like to admit, and I’m not one to swing my balls around (or my chesticles as the case may be) for people to take me seriously when it comes to my opinion, but I’m going to for this book. It had the tension, gore, chills, and anxiety of a good horror story. It had the subtle backdrop of social and political commentary. It also had humor , that at times hit me right in the giggledick and made me snort with a giggle. And lastly, it had weed….lots of weed.

I’m out after just over 10%. The premise is mildly interesting but I’ve had my fill of harmful racial stereotypes that are intended to be funny. On to the next read for me.

The Stand meets The Walking Dead meets a bit of Cheech and Chong in this really wild setup of a population turned mad (even if only for bursts).

The Canni are an increasingly larger group of folks who go temporarily mad and attempt to kill anyone around them after being exposed by a chemical dropped during an attack by terrorists in the U.S. As a result, everyone is a little on edge, as attacks by these "Canni" come swiftly and unexpectedly, as Cash and Rob come to find out after arriving in Las Vegas for a vacation/possible marriage. When one of their friends make the unexpected turn, Cash and Rob are forced to escape for their lives, meeting up with a slew of memorable folks in an effort to find a way to counter the effects of the chemical affecting so many throughout the country.

Definitely a rather interesting take on zombie-like literature, "Canni" is assuredly a wild ride! While Rob and Cash were certainly fleshed out well and believable protagonists, I found myself drawn more to some of the side players, including Don Russo, which, when you read the tale, you will certainly come to find out everything you need to know about him, including certain information you maybe didn't, and the at first mysterious Paul Bhong (! The fact also that these folks suffer from essentially a more temporary condition, rather than an eternal affliction, was also I thought a smart take compared to a lot of the apocalyptic literature that is out there. Society has not just simply crumbled to the ground, but instead has kind of evolved and tried to deal with things the best they could. You will definitely fall down the rabbit hole while reading this one, and while this tale is definitely going to be often downright ridiculous, its the kind of guilty pleasure that you will really enjoy! I know I certainly did.

Canni by Daniel O’ Connor

I have read many zombie books and this one is definitely different from the others. While most zombie books dwell heavily on the anger and destruction of civilization, Canni puts emphasis on the humanity of mankind.

Rob and Cash, with their friend Teresa, are on their way to Las Vegas for a needed vacation and marriage ceremony. Along the way, a lethal airborne virus is released over America. People start to show aggressive behaviors and turn on their friends and family. Rob, Cash, and Teresa, meet lots of people on the road to their vacation, and end up getting stuck in Las Vegas and meet more people. Everyone has a role to play during the escalation of the virus.

Daniel O’Connor brings to us the compassion that is often left out in zombie books. O’Connor easily gives us the history of our main characters while also keeping the flow of the story. At times, it might seem that a lot of the information about the scene or the commentary that a person has, is too much. But I found this to be beneficial to the story, to bring us the brotherly love that is missing in zombie books. This isn’t to say there is no gore or anxious plot twists, there is plenty of that too. All I am saying is you will be reading about ALL sides of morality.

I was also able to make some extra notes on how to survive an apocalypse. One thing I never thought to have on hand at the end of the world, is a spare tire!

Not your typical zombie tale....which is a good thing. Terrorists conduct a mysterious "fly over" the United States ahd spread a disturbiing new virus. The symptoms of this virus his suddenly making the victim want to kill and eat anyone unlucky enough to be near by. Children and parents, lovers and friends, brothers and sisters, strangers....they all attack and kill suddenly and then after about 15 minutes the inflicted recover only to find that their mouth tastes horrible and they've killed their loved ones. No one is safe.
Cash and Rob have taken a road trip to Las Vegas when they begin to encounter these events. Through new friends and allies they find safety among the people society prefer not to notice. Meanwhile scientists work to find a cure. Little do they know, the cure will come from a most unlikely place.

I liked Canni because it was a new twist on the tired zombie genre. Some of my favorite characters were the ever-naked Don Russo and the President of the United States. A nice touch is how several characters that you meet in the very beginning are tied in to characters later on. The ending stretched on a bit long for me with follow up on people's lives after the cure, but that's my only real gripe.

Firstly, many thanks to NetGalley, Blood Bound Books and the author, Daniel O'Connor, for the opportunity to preview this excellent read, in exchange for my honest review.

I think this is such a good read. It's not my normal genre, but, the storyline is fantastic - there is a virus spreading across America that turns ordinary people into flesh eating zombies, but, only for a short time.
Alongside this mayhem, a group of young people travel to Vegas.

The book follows many strands, including the President of USA who is frantically trying to find a cure / antidote. It really gripped me and as a YA read I reckon it will do so well. The great thing for me, was that this isn't just a horror read, it's got such soul and some fabulous cultural references and human challenges woven throughout.

My only gripes are; it is VERY American and so, as a UK reader, some of the references were lost (however, this could also be down to my age)!
The first part of the book is very much better than the second part, which became more of a struggle to stick to. However, I'm glad I did, as things are nicely rounded up at the end.

All in all, it's a strong 4* excellent read as the positives far outweighed my gripes.

I loved, loved, loved this book until about half way through, when it suddenly lost the plot and became a rushed, chaotic mess. There were hints of humor sprinkled among the social commentary and gore in the first part of the book, but the second half was farcical and made me totally rethink what had gone before. It is a shame, and I’m not really sure what the author was thinking. The first half would get 4 stars from me. I delayed whether the second half would reduce it by one or two stars, but I went with two stars after careful consideration, because the ending ruined the whole book for me.

Terrifying read. Cash, Rob and Theresa are headed cross country for a Vegas trip, and a possible wedding, when life as they know it is forever changed. Everywhere they turn people are turning Canni and wanting to kill those around them. How do you survive? What a read for the 2020 COVID19 pandemic.
