Guppy's memoir is full of nostalgia for an era long past. Living abroad, and generally being restless or "rootless", I can totally identify with her descriptions of exile, of always looking for something else. This, for me, was the book's strongest points.
The beginning was really interesting, as she shared her insights and thoughts on arriving in Paris, noticing all the differences between her traditional upbringing and the new-found freedom, as well as the challenges of living by herself in a new place, finding work, and above all, finding herself.
However, the book started to feel long, especially when it became a long string of all the famous (and not-so-famous) people that she met. She recalls her first meetings with them, summarizes their lives and philosophies, and talks about their deaths or how she kept in touch with these people... or not. Still, I guess that Paris in the 50s was as interesting as ever, and if one really was involved in the artistic scene one would eventually come across all the big names.
