The last thing plastic surgeon Jackson Maebry wants after a long day in the operating room is a call to the ER. When he gets there, he discovers a trauma case as horrific as he has ever a young woman, beaten and burned almost beyond recognition. What Jackson's colleagues don't know is that the victim, Allie Sorosh, is Jackson's lover. With Allie in a coma, Jackson keeps their relationship quiet and takes part in her reconstruction, a complicated set of procedures only the most skilled specialists can perform. But as he and the other doctors struggle to put her back together, the fractures in Jackson's own life begin to break apart dramatically. When the San Francisco Police's investigation of the attack leads to his door, Jackson knows the truth can no longer be suppressed.
Plastic sugeron Jackson Meabry is called to the Er after a long day and to his horror he sees a brutally beaten and burned victim that he realize is his lover but he can't let anyone know about it. And the process start to stich her back tougheter while the police is investigating on the attack. Thought the book was a bit to long and it dragged at some parts. It was an okay medical thriller but wasn't hooking me to the story but was interesting.
A plastic surgeon resident tries to fix up and figure out what happened to his girlfriend while the police suspect him of the attack. The girlfriend is protecting the guy's boss because she needs him to fix her face, even killing to protect him. Guy still gets charged, put in the loony bin. Girl turns herself in. No one's happy by the end of it all.

This medical thriller centers on pill-popping and plastic surgery--rather tired topics, when Gilder could have been writing about much hotter issues like the human genome and stem-cell research. His concepts of gender are pretty old-hat, too. His doctors are all men, and his female characters are mostly interested in attracting men. But he manages to tell a surprisingly compelling story. He writes good dialogue that wittily delineates character. The book's centerpiece, an operating room scene with wisecracking surgeons peeling of a woman's face and poking around in her skull, will leave readers queasy for a long time.
This is the first book by Mr. Gilder but he has got quite an itinerary of writing. It is the story of a plastic surgeon and his girlfriend Allie. She is severely beaten and burned. Everything that surrounds her life and the doctor's is examined. You keep changing your mind constantly about the plot. I had a hard time putting this book down. I recommend it.
Wow! Absolutely not what I expected. I could not put this book down and finished it within a day. The plot was excellent and there were countless twists and turns. Just when you think you know where the story was heading, you find that you were wrong!
4.5 stars. A resident in plastic surgery is on call at the hospital when a young woman is brought into the emergency room, severely beaten and burned. Though he recognizes her as his lover, he chooses not to make their relationship known, and assists in her surgery. But soon the investigation into her assault leads to his door, and the young doctor must face his own deepest fears as well as some startling information about others he thought he knew.
I was amazed that this was the first novel for Joshua Gilder. The back of the book states that the author is a speech-writer for president's, so I was concerned the book would have some political undertones, but it didn't! This is one book that I struggled to put down every night. Great storyline, great suspense, great characters, but just an ok ending.
Highly recommended thriller! Well-written and suspenseful to the end, even though I figured it out about half way through. Enjoyed listening to every minute of this story, especially the descriptions of the operating room and operating procedures, neither of which I'm familiar with.
I really liked this book right up to the ending. There was no way for this book to have a happy ending but I absolutely hated how it did end for that reason alone it only got a 4 star with a different ending I would have given it a 5.
