I Almost Became Me: A Memoir

Rate this book
#1 AMAZON BEST SELLER - LGBT BIOGRAPHIES From growing up in a small farm town to working with Wall Street’s elite, Cory Calvin’s candid memoir recounts a life of struggle and success and the moment he came to realize his true dreams were still hidden beneath the surface.

Cory Calvin is a successful New York City corporate executive turned entrepreneur. His story reveals a difficult childhood as a closeted teen with a stern father, school bullies, and a strict religious upbringing in a rural town. But Cory’s story is more than his struggle, it is a story of self-discovery, self-acceptance, and success. For Cory, leaving behind his small town and climbing the corporate ladder was empowering, until he realized that there are many more closets in this world.

With each success, Cory always felt that he was so close to being who he should have been. That he had almost become himself. Until one day Cory found the courage to leave it all behind, and traveled solo around the world, discovering his true self along the way and redefining his dreams.

Through I Almost Became Me, Cory shares stories that range from humorous, to tearful, to inspiring. From hearing his father tell him he is going to hell, to meeting his boyfriend through an online ad, to feeling stuck achieving a dream he envisioned as he hid his true self, Cory’s experience will speak to many in the LGBTQ+ community who have yet to realize their own dreams beyond a series of closets. For anyone who has had to hide to survive and endure abusive relationships, this book offers an uplifting message, a healing touch, and the key to self-realization.

Emotional Rollercoaster!

Sit back, relax, make sure you have plenty of tissues, a snack and a beverage because you will not want to put this book down. I read until the wee hours of the morning. The depth of feelings that Mr. Calvin takes the reader through is remarkable. Through his words, you truly feel what he was feeling growing up, feeling different from other children, hiding those feelings for so many years and what it was like when he finally let them go. Mr. Calvin’s writings gave me a new perspective on many things, including what people do and say without thinking. I am looking forward to his next book, hopefully on some of those travel adventures he hinted about in this one!

Bravery

A well written book that you don't want to put down. Whether you agree or not, the insight it provides into the struggle of growing up trying not
to be yourself pulls at your heart strings. Hopefully this book helps promote understanding and squashes prejudice toward the LGBT community. The bravery it took to tell this story is to be admired.

This is an amazing biography of overcoming the stigma of being gay and raised in NW Ohio. Mr. Calvin tells of the issues he had to go through to become the successful man he is today! I think all queer teens in NW Ohio should read this and know they too can overcome the homophobia of small towns.
