Even though her one-shot Koe no Katachi won critical acclaim, it took a longsome law suit to get a magazine to publish it because of its socio-critical theme. Eventually, it was featured in the February edition of Bessatsu Shounen Magazin, where it placed first, and later in the 12th edition of the 2013 Weekly Shounen Magazine.

She has also collaborated with UBUKATA Tow for the manga adaption of his novel Mardock Scramble.

This volume concludes the longest story arc yet in the series, and I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, I am happy with how it ultimately ended and the story seems to be moving in an exciting direction.

On the other hand, I feel the magic that this series once had is gone. The ingenious simplicity and beautiful tragic wonder that made me love the first 5 or 6 volumes has been traded in for a darker, more traditional fantasy battle epic...something more akin to Lord of the Rings. Which is fine and all, but nowhere near as unique, fresh, and great as it use to be. The artwork has also taken a noticeable dip in quality. Characters from earlier volumes return in this one and they just weren't drawn as well as they were before.

I was thinking about dropping the series at this point, but I am interested to see what happens next so I'll keep reading for now.

Fushi levels up again, but not without a price . . . and not without confusing this reader more than a little, but the conclusion says, "Don't worry, we're moving on anyway."

The end of an era, and what a great ending it was. Everything feels organic and it's clear that, from the beginning, Oima did a lot of work outlining and laying down the framework to execute a story of such scope with care. Every piece comes together naturally for a satisfying conclusion to the first major arc of the manga. Now onto adventures in modern times! Should be a really interesting change of pace.

I love and adore this series but this volume was rather disappointing, especially as an ending to a larger arc. While I do still love this series, it’s got me concerned for what could happen in future volumes. I feel like there’s been a major tone change in this volume and that tone was what I fell in love with in the first place. While this volume hasn’t ruined the series for me entirely (it’s still one I’ll be pre-ordering and looking forward to) it’s one that might not hold the whole of my heart anymore.

🚨🚨 ———Spoilers from here!!!!! ———🚨 🚨

Bringing all the dead characters back like Gugu, Tonari and March felt odd for the series. At first I was hoping Fushi may have been seeing their ghosts after he took on Prince Bon’s form but, no, they’re actually here and get to live their lives again. For me, this felt like an absolute tone change. How can you feel any sort of loss for any of the characters Fushi meets in the future and sees killed or die along the way if he can just magic them back to life? (Even Ligurd the Owl came back to life!!!) I hoped that perhaps these were just forms of his friends who lacked the personalities and traits they once had but no, of course not. It felt like Oima has been written into a corner and had to Deus Ex herself out of the problems she’d set up with a ‘remember all your favourite characters, now they’re back!’ Maybe this wouldn’t have been as bad if Fushi hasn’t then gone on to restore the whole town and army. So of course they won, how could they not? To Your Eternity doesn’t feel quiet as lonely now does it? With the anime coming out and with subsequent rereads of the series, knowing all the characters that died will come back in some form will definitely effect its reread and watch/rewatchability for me personally.

To bring all the characters back was one thing but to then let them live out their futures in one page in a short explanatory panel is another. If you bring them back, please let me see how they live their lives out but not in these third person, removed panels. Even the shots which encompassed these characters lives felt distant and unfulfilling. The aside for Iddy’s death was particularly frustrating even thought I got my wish for Fushi seeing his friends as ghost, but the one thing that really upset me the most was March’s death. I doubt it was March’s choice so seeing Tonari and Hairo euthanise a very young girl due to her grief over Fushi’s decision to leave everyone behind was distressing to say the least and an ending I didn’t think she deserved.

Left Hand and Kahaku were some of my favourite parts of the series as a whole, he was a really interesting character and Left Hand was as well. I was hoping that while Kahaku probably wouldn’t stay a permanent feature, that Left Hand or something like it would. After the iron factory explosion, I very much doubt we’ll see anything like it in the new Future arc even though we’ve been teased a character called Mizuha who looks similar to Kahaku so I’m curious to see what her relationship will be with Fushi as Kahaku’s confession of love for them before he died was quite powerful.

With that said, I’m curious to see where the Modern arc will go and what it’ll cover, but I’m not looking forward to seeing it’s ending. The micro-arcs in To Your Eternity seem to struggle to find their endings anyway (they meander for a while and then strike upon an ending rather suddenly) but it’s never felt so abrupt and messy than in volume 12 at its most crucial point. While I am disappointed in this arcs ending, it’s a series I’ll see through to the end and hope Yoshitoki Oima will give it a good finale.

i would have lowkey given up on this series after the end of the renril arc in this volume but it looks like a fun arc is about to begin (as indicated in the last few pages of this volume). i continue to have a lot of admiration for fushi and march; that doesn’t change. overall, i can’t say i am not glad this long arc has ended, especially because i am not a fan of fantasy battles as such. i am still holding on to the overall themes and vibe of this story though – of mortality, death, friendship, found families and humanity.

*rating and review refer to the whole series*
The first 4 volumes of this series are really good with an interesting premise, good characters and an engaging story. The prison island arc after that had less interesting characters but was okay. The arc after that looked at all the really good things it could have done relating to LGBT issues and instead went homophobic with iffy commentary on transgender thrown on top. It doesn't get better after that. The arc after that is just messy, I lost all connection to the characters and just wanted it to be over.
There's 3 new characters introduced I don't care for and are not especially likeable, the really good bits about all friends of the immortal dying earlier are made moot because he can resurrect them infinetly now and we get the motivations of the big bads which... are.... Urgh?
Starting after the prison arc, the plot also gets increasingly hard to follow and skips around a lot and theres some weird continuity.
The manga should have ended here, after that last arc. Everything was more or less wrapped up, arcs finished, character journeys ended. All it needed was maybe one chapter or two showing us black hoods goal and wrapping up the story.
We didn't get that.
We got "hey its AU current world Japan now and the world's finally at peace (except its obviously not??) and are you exhausted yet?".
And that's the point I stopped reading. Because I'm really not interested in anything that happens anymore.
I had started hoping somewhere that this story would turn out to be a reimagined "The Egg" by Andy Weir and I still think it's at least inspired by it. But the narrative as it is now feels like it lost its roots.
So 2.5 stars for a beginning I relly enjoyed and an increasingly disappointing story after.

...end of part one??? You can never tell what's what with this comic.

Overall this was a fine ending volume to the war arc, and the era as a whole, if slightly abrupt in places. Just as soon as worst comes to worst, the miraculous reversal comes as a result of Bon's making up for his lies. Kahak comes to his lowest point too, but also manages to slightly make up for what he's done. I was actually quite surprised by how much I felt for Kahak in this volume. I never really liked him from his introduction, and his behaviour ranged from off-putting to disturbing. He was always trying and failing to prove himself to the others, only digging himself deeper each time.

Left Hand and Eko I was disappointed in. I felt there was so much more potential to the two of them.

It was nice seeing Fushi finally making a decision of his own, even in the face of the reactions of his comrades. But even so, it's still a decision to live for others first. As Gugu points out, it's not a dream of his own like the wishes of the others. The fact that Black Hood endorsed it isn't exactly reassuring either. Human welfare, except in an abstract sense, has never been a concern of his. This whole covering the Earth thing makes me wonder, weren't the knockers basically burrowing into his skin all this time? No wonder he always knew exactly where they were. I wouldn't be surprised if they turn out to be his creations. They're awfully similar to Fushi in a lot of ways, and Black Hood seems pretty blasé about the number of times they've almost returned Fushi to nothing. I'm a little doubtful they'll come up much in the new era. Maybe if we ever get some answers about Black Hood.

I would've liked a few more chapters about what happened to Fushi's companions after the war, a few pages each, like Kahak got. A panel or two and a little text box seems like short shrift for most of them. The bear and Pioran didn't come up at all, actually. I'm sure at least Tonari, Gugu and Bon will come up in the new era, but I wonder whether we'll ever see the three warriors again. Other than Messar, they didn't get much characterization and weren't that close to Fushi in the grand scheme of things, but maybe they'll want to see what comes in the new world.

Whatever quibbles I might have, this still easily one of my favourite running manga, and I eagerly await whatever "part two" has in store.

Volume 12 completes the first arc of the historic period. Why do I feel underwhelmed? There was some Power Ranger energy with the reincarnated team, who eventually are given sad, little post-scripts after spending so long with them. Well, some of them. It's strange that a few of these characters have almost entire volumes dedicated to them at the beginning of the series, while others have just sort of showed up. I miss the tone from the beginning. I have the next volume which is the beginning of the next arc and will see how I feel about it but I might stop reading there and sell this series off. It doesn't totally live up to the premise, feels mostly rushed and inconsistent, but also I picked this up solely because I wanted to read a popular, ongoing fantasy manga series that was popular with the kids. This isn't the one for me, though. Yes, it kept me reading for twelve volumes, but only because I was hoping it would get better.

The battle is finally over. Immo won by working out that he could bring everyone back to life making them basically immortal soldiers while he kept up their bodies. I'm still not sure how I feel about the whole resurrection thing, it's a bit weird and has changed the feel of the whole story.

I did not like the way March's story went. Her initial arc was so well done even though it was so sad. But this new arc for her felt wrong somehow and I especially didn't like how it ended for her.

But now everyone we knew has aged and died and we are back to just knowing Immo. But he is busy trying to spread his roots across the whole world, so is basically in a coma.

It'll be interesting to see where the story goes now that this arc is finished.

2020 Read #572

Y’all...I’m kinda pissed. I was hoping we were reaching the end of the story, and — there’s a new arc now? In the modern era? On one hand that sounds cool, but on the other — @#$*!! This series doesn’t need to go the way of other shonen manga where it overstays its welcome. Because the story we’re getting? It’s so damn convoluted already!! I am just not enjoying this series as much as I once did. And that makes me sadder more than anything else.

This is, by pure chance, the very end *exactly* of the anime to date, which is convenient for me in a lot of ways (I now know to specifically look for 13-19, since I have 20 and 21 and missed a LOT of the others).

That said, I didn't exactly LOVE the "ending" of this chapter/season. While a lot of the characters got to , I didn't like the directions they went, specifically . The rest were okay, if maybe not totally to my taste, but THAT bit was completely unsatisfying!

I suppose it's hard to be PERFECT, though. Maybe it's just the fact of the story having spanned LITERALLY CENTURIES but I guess ghosts just never grow, once they're dead. (Funny how Fushi is still so naïve after LITERALLY CENTURIES, but then he was manufactured, not born, and probably lacks something that keeps him naïve as a result.)

Otherwise, it's very good, and the anime did a marvelous job translating things pretty much exactly (though, this translation names her "Iddy" instead of "Eko" for how she tried to pronounce kitty/neko). The anime, of course, took the liberty of padding out things like their individual endings, which are a single panel per character* here, and added in a post-credits scene that leads more directly into the next "stage" of the series (but left out the "Mizuha" scene in this volume). It's just a little more charming seeing the original art, though.

Maybe the pretty but irritatingly syncopated theme song has been getting to me a bit on the rewatch.

Recommended for fans of the series, sadly impenetrable to complete newcomers.

*except Iddy/Eko, nothing's explained about her fate, which seems important as one of the few(?) remaining clay people! I guess the "major" ghosts are the only ones who get an epilogue.

The nokker in Kahaku's arm attacks Fushi and steals all his vessels and Bon is forced to make a tough decision but, in doing so, allows Fushi to (mostly) unlock his full potential.

Then Fushi goes into a coma and fuses with the world, lying dormant for a few...centuries? millennia? A long time. Thus concludes Part 1 of this tale. 12 books in...and we've only just finished Part 1. See y'all in the future.

After the Nokker inside Kahaku betrays Fushi, the battle seems all but lost. How can they possibly beat the Nokkers when Fushi has lost all that he was? There seems little hope, but then Prince Bon has an idea ...

description

There were parts of this volume that I liked very much, amongst them, Bon's sacrifice and the reunions.

Still, the ending had me a little frustrated, and there were several parts that were a bit confusing in this volume as well. There were a number of shifts and panel transitions that could have been made clearer.

Also, the ending felt a little bit like ... regression?

An important theme in the last volumes has been Fushi's humanity, and I feel like that battle is unnecessarily lost at the end.

I suppose I expect a kind of reset in the next volume, and I'm interested to see what happens, but I confess I was a tad disappointed with the Renril arc finale.

End of an Era

An act of kindness turned into betrayal, a soul from the past changes the odds, and noble sacrifices help fight against the nokkers even as they overpower the defenders. Sorry folks but I can't say anymore without telling you spoilers since most of this volume is involved with Fushi's new talents and how it affects others but I can tell you by the end the arc will conclude and we will see a major time leap as Fushi attempts to stop the nokkers once and for all.

This volume brings us to the end of the first era of this series. This series has definitely gone off in some truly interesting directions over the last 12 volumes. It had a very strong beginning for me but then it kind of slowed down and I wasn't sure I truly wanted to continue. I'm still not sure, we'll have to wait to see what the future entails.

Being sci-fi, the epilogue of this arc was told in an imaginative and disjointed manner. Seeing little March again was an immense pleasure, but good things are short-lived. Every character met along Fushi's way took their place. I look forward to the next development of the story in the present day.
