The Inquisition Trilogy #2

A Vampire's Redemption

Rate this book
Marcus was likely dead, killed by the Inquisition, or so it was believed. Then the vampire was found, broken beyond words, in an isolated prison fortress. Marcus had never expected to see daylight again, let alone be rescued by his mate. Now he worries he’ll drag Caleb into his darkness.

Caleb was the one who pulled Marcus out of his prison cell, and he’s determined to drag him from the nightmares of his mind as well. After all, that’s what mates are for, and Caleb had lost hope at finding his. And if he can help destroy the entire Inquisition? Well, all the better.

Dealing with Marcus’s physical and mental healing from his trauma is difficult enough, but Inquisition holdouts are causing chaos everywhere, and sinister plots are rampant. Marcus and Caleb have no choice but to fight back. It’s a good thing they are not alone.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.5 stars

A Vampire’s Redemption is the second book in the Inquisition Trilogy and continues the story started in A Mage’s Power. As such, this story is really not meant to stand alone. I loved that first book and have been eagerly awaiting this next installment.

My favorite aspect of this story is the found family connection among the characters. Caleb is an alpha wolf who left his pack years ago and has found a deep connection with his best friend, Rowan. And Marcus is part of a military team (that includes Rowan’s mate, Shaw), as well as having an extended vampire family. I really enjoyed the way that author Casey Wolfe showcased the bonds these men have with each other and the support they provide one another. We learned about Shaw and Marcus’ team in A Mage’s Power, but here we get to actually met them and I enjoyed watching them all interact. It is a diverse and interesting group and their strengths all play together well. We also meet Marcus’ sire, Hale, as well as his vampire brother’s and sisters, and again this really added some nice elements to the story.

The descriptive bit: A Mage’s Power: Book 1 – Rowan is a Master Mage in. He has an enchantment shop, he studies for even more Masters exams and he spends time humoring the attention of his best friend and werewolf, Caleb. He bumps into Inquisitor Shaw one day on the street and they have an instant attraction with a fair amount of curiosity. Shaw has a huge secret that may well tear them all apart in the end.

A Vampire’s Redemption: Book 2 – A member of Shaw’s squad, Marcus is a vampiEverstrandre who has been gravely wounded and psychologically scarred by imprisonment. Caleb – Rowan’s werewolf bestie was the one who saved Marcus. At the moment they set eyes on each other, they knew that they were soulmates. There is still a lot of political intrigue in the land of the magical folk and more characters arrive on the scene!

My thoughts bit: These two books were a lot of fun! The first book introduces three of the main characters. Caleb is a wild and free werewolf with every-changing-colors in his hair and a penchant for being entirely too energetic. Rowan is a Master Mage whose skill with magic has made him a bit of a prodigy in the community. Shaw is undercover… working on both sides of the magical law and walking a fine line in terms of getting himself in danger.

The relationship between the three men is lovely. Caleb is so full of energy and I really enjoyed the way that Wolfe characterizes the werewolves. Rowan is the more reserved of the two men. He has some darkness in his past but Caleb keeps trying to urge him out into the world.

The world building in the first book is amazingly detailed. Wolfe outlines the various magical folks and the mundane without it becoming cumbersome. The magical schools are wonderfully detailed and intriguing: Conjuration, Enchantment, Alteration, Primal and Spirit. Mage’s must be tested in each of the types of magic… and Rowan is more focussed on his training than anything else… that is until he meets Shaw!

The second book takes a broader sweep of Everstrand. Shaw’s troop of friends shows up and social chaos ensues for the first third of the book. The politics continue in the second part of the trilogy. The magical folk are still in conflict with mundanes in some places… of course, this doesn’t apply to Shaw and his friends. I couldn’t help thinking of them as the Supernatural breakfast club in my head! A werewolf, a Mage, A centaur, an elf, and a witch!

I don’t want to go into great details about the mysteries that unfold during the course of both books because that would ruin the stories. Suffice it to say, Wolfe is a master of creating tension and plotting out detailed adventures for the supernatural gang! I’m definitely looking forward to reading the third book in this series!

A Mage’s Power is available now and A Vampire’s Redemption is out on May 31, 2019!

Take heed of the author's note. These books are not standalones. But you need to be reading this series. Damn you guys are rocking these Paras books lately. At the end of book one, Rowan and Shaw's story, Rowan's best friend, Caleb, helps to free the prisoners of this warped experimental place for Paras. When he goes to the last cell, to free the last one, one word came to mind. Mate. Quickly followed by 'mine'.
So this is Caleb and Marcus's story. Marcus was caught off guard and captured by the Inquisition. The horrors of that place were unbelievable. Each prisoner had to go through some form of hell and part of Marcus's was that they took one of his arms, to see if 'it would grow back'. Yeah, psychos. Clearly from it, Marcus has PTSD and is not dealing with it real well. He does ok most days, but some days just take home down. Having Caleb as his mate helps tremendously and having his coven and his own little made family help. Especially when his sire and one of his teammates seem to grasp what he needs. Caleb is trying to do the best he can to make things right for Marcus but he can only do so much. Or so he thought. Being forced to be the alpha he's supposed to be has brought some interesting changes, especially once he and Marcus are mated. But even with his prosthetic, Marcus feels useless. Until it came time to save some survivor's of that prison. Marcus is forced to finally face his demons and take time to heal the way he needs to. But in helping and going back to the squad, it may cost him more than his arm this time.
Gah, this series!! If you guys love the Paras and fantasy and all that, these books are for you. It is a series that keeps you engrossed the whole time, biting your nails, wondering what's going to happen next. And let me tell you, some of the characters in this book are humdingers. Shew. But as a whole, they are family. Maybe a dysfunctional one, but still a family, willing to lay their lives down for each other. They love each other, they fight for each other and for others who can't. It's an amazing series. I'm enthralled. Each character brings his own special 'brew' to the mix and it can be some complex stuff. These guys have backgrounds that aren't pretty and the battles they fight are worse. All of them have some form of PTSD or something that gets to them, but the deal. They get therapy if needed, they meditate, whatever it takes. But they get up and fight another day. All to prove, Paras are just as special as anyone else and deserve rights and freedoms like everyone else. And not to be treated like freaks or experimental crap.
I can't wait to see how this ends. With all the info I learned in this one, I really want to see how this goes.

Only 3 stars and I am really sorry about that.

First all the things I loved in this book:
Caleb
Marcus
Rowan
Shaw
Keenan and Haxos
Thalanil and Orion
Hale (of course, who wouldn't)
Tate (would make a perfect mate to Hale ... but I think he is already occupied;) )
And Rhys (who would be a good MC for his own book)

So you see ... the characters in this book are great and the reason why I will read the last book as well.
Also the friendships and familial bonds are worth experiencing

But that and the idea if the story, which is also interesting brings us to the not so great points

The relationships are great ... all except the mate-bonds. Because we see more intimate (not in the sexual way) interactions between all characters, except between the couples.
The couple time is limited and thoroughly neglected. and I don't even mean their sexual interactions ... which we never really know of. But that is a point I could live without, if the relationship is well done

The second major problem is the story or better said the way the story is told . The idea is really good as is the world building.
But the way it is written just don't show us the important points.
We see a lot of stuff ... some of it is nice but some I could live without. But there are some scenes which would be important but we only get a reference to it.

That makes this book very long and it dragged.

So all in all 2,5 to 3 stars.... and the hope that the next book is a bit better

I must admit that what I liked most about the book is that Casey Wolfe hasn't made things too easy for Marcus and Caleb. Marcus has been tortured, they'd cut off one of his arms and that's how Caleb finds him. I really appreciated that for the author having a fated mate doesn't solve every problem. For example,Caleb's presence and support do help Marcus with his nightmares and fears, but he actually needs to get over them by himself, he has to settle his mind alone in order to be the best mate for Caleb.
And while Marcus and Caleb try to find the best way to make things work between them, the hunt for the Inquisition becomes more dangerous. New discoveries only bring more violence and risks for all of the characters.
So,A Vampire's Redemption has everything a reader might look for in a book: mystery, humor, danger, convincing characters and a great fated mates romance.
I really liked it.

I'm excited the next chapter in the trilogy is finally ready. Our boys are off to new adventures, and this time it's Caleb and Marcus that are taking the reins. No worries; all your old favorites will be back (you think Shaw and Rowan are about to go anywhere?), and a whole host of new characters will be joining the fun. This #ownvoices novel was difficult to write at times but also incredibly satisfying. I can't wait for everyone to continue on this journey with us. Careful...there's magic afoot.

Now I have to be completely honest and say that I have not read the first book in this trilogy but after reading this book I will be going back and reading it. I will say that I normally want to read the first book in a series such as a trilogy but I was not too lost on what was going on so that made not having read the first book too bad. I believe, if I am being honest, that’s this book probably just picked up where book one ended so for me not having read it, it was pretty much like I started this book and was good with where the book led me. I was not lost and did not feel like I missed too much to be able to figure out what was happening and why. I love when a book is like that because I really wanted to read this book without having to go to the first book beforehand. I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait to see what is coming next for this group of mix matched tribe.

This book is primarily about two men but it is also a book about a groups of men and women that are closely mixed in with the two main characters. And even though it is mainly about Caleb and Marcus, the story of their family is closely intertwined with theirs, so I believe this is a story about the group as a whole while focusing on the new relationship and mating between Caleb and Marcus.

When this story starts, Marcus is being held captive by the Inquisition. He is badly wounded and near to death when Ro, Shaw, and Caleb show up to rescue the prisoners. What neither Marcus or Caleb expected was to be mates and to realize this in the midst of the rescue. But once Caleb realizes this, there is no way that he is letting Marcus out of his sight for anything.

Marcus is in a very bad way. One of the worst of his injuries is the fact that his arm was cut off while captured to see if being a Vampire would rejuvenate the arm. Of course that is not the case but the evil individuals that captured him do not care in the least. All they care about is their experiments.

Once Marcus is on the mend and the word of his rescue has reached his family, the cat is let out of the bag that he has meet his mate. Of course everyone is happy for Marcus but the reality of the danger that is still lurking in the wait is still in the air.

Caleb needs to help Marcus to get back into shape both mentally and physically to be able to rejoin his team in order to fight what is still to come. Things are steadily becoming more dangerous and Marcus needs to be by his team mates side to offer his help.

Will Marcus be able to learn to deal with what happened to him when he was captured in order to return to help his teammates in what is most likely going to be a very rough road ahead?

This was a great read. I enjoyed it so much and cannot wait to back now and read the first book. I definitely can’t wait to get my hands on the third book after reading this one and finding out what is coming next. Great read!!

Four and a half stars for such good world building details.
Keeping me interested and entertained.
There is no sex scenes, all off camera. Which surprisingly didn't detract from the story. I just like my books to have some in your face hotness.
This is book two and I enjoyed it as much as book one. The writing style just sucks you in. Caleb and Marcus are so sweet with each other.
I liked them both together and apart.
This book will definitely get a second read.
Look forward to more from the squad too.
Good job.

A Vampire's Redemption is the second book in The Inquisition Trilogy. This is not a standalone, it must be read after A mage’s Power. At the end of the first book Caleb helped to free the prisoners of an experiment. This is Caleb’s story along with his soulmate Marcus, a vampire who he rescued. The world building continues to be fantastic! The relationship dynamics are awesome. There are some amazing secondary characters along with Rowan and Shaw. Overall, a great read that kept me engaged. I cannot wait for the next one.

Thank you, NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book!

DNF 40%

I wanted to love this so much! I am gutted this ended up not being my cup of tea, while I loved the characters to bits, I just didn't click with the plot or writing style.

I read the first book around a year ago now (also through NetGalley), I would definitely suggest reading the first book before this one! Even though this book follows different characters, I feel like there is the potential to get very lost if you read this one first.

First up, things I loved:
-The relationship between Marcus & Caleb was so soft and sweet and loving, I really liked these two characters.
-I loved the fact that therapy was mentioned/offered straightaway. A lot of fantasy/paranormal always seem to brush over traumatic events.
-I loved the effortlessly casual introduction of a non-binary side character. I feel like there is such a shortage of fantasy/paranormal with non-binary characters, so this made me very happy to see.
-Hale was such an intriguing character.
-The rep in here is so amazing, we have a pansexual/bisexual MC, gay MC and an MC with a disability and PTSD. All of which is handled extremely well (from what I read) and this is own voices too.

Things I didn't like and why I DNF'ed:
-The story seemed to lack a direct plotline or any sort of "suspense".
-I was very bored. This is probably a "me not you" situation, as I am a lover of fast-paced plots, while there is nothing wrong with slower-paced, they are just not for me.
-Time seemed to skip a lot and I wasn't sure if a day had passed, or a week etc.
-Like with the first book, the world-building still confused me.

Unfortunatley, I think I just don't click with the writing style. I am so glad that I gave this series and author another try though and I would still highly recommend this to people who like diverse characters, slow-paced plots and a lovely romance.

This is the second book of The Inquisition Trilogy, and Wolfe has stayed true to their voice and writing style. A Mage’s Power had some fantastic and detailed magic, and one scene that still stands out was during the Charm making. A Vampire’s Redemption is very much the same vein (all the puns intended), but instead of the focus on Rowan the magician, we are told the story of Marcus, the vampire. Marcus, recently rescued from one of The Inquisition’s experimentation facilities, is living with PTSD, and rehabbing from the loss of a limb.

This is not your typical Vampire, Urban Fantasy novel.

First, I don’t think anyone would expect a Vampire to be exposed to enough trauma to develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, but considering Marcus’s journey, you can easily understand how that happened. Wolfe’s take on the Vampire mythology is creative and unique but holds true to some of the expected mythos. Be prepared to learn a whole new way of considering our blood-sucking friends.

But this unusual take on vampires is similar in the Urban Fantasy ambiance of the novel. At times you’d think you were immersed within a Melanie Rawn or Stephen R Donaldson type like world, and then Wolfe throws modern-day elements into the mix like cell phones and cars. Some might find it slightly jarring, or at the least, take time to settle into, but again, I thought it was a fresh look at the genre – perhaps it was a mashing of Urban Fantasy/Paranormal and Fantasy.

As much as the entire trilogy centers around The Inquisition and our hero band of special ops trained characters, you would think that the vast majority of the novel would revolve around the plot to root out and diminish the nefarious Inquisition. You’ll get some of that, and the cloak-and-dagger feel is delicious. But you also get, and what I think was the mainstay of the novel, the gradual development of Marcus, reacquainting with his chosen family after a horribly violent and torturous imprisonment by what amounts to a terrorist-like organization along with the imprinting of a fated mate in Caleb.

The relationship between Marcus and Caleb, a vampire and a werewolf, is equally as interesting, as inter-species relationships are explored and prejudices are challenged.

On the whole, not what I expected, and then equally, exactly what I did expect from Wolfe. This may not be for all readers, but if you like your fantasy, you might want to give this a try. If you like your Urban Fantasy, but you’re looking for something a little different, this series might be just the thing.

The third novel should tie this all up. Looking forward to it.

This book picks up where the first one left off, except it focuses on Caleb and Marcus, as Marcus heals from being held captive. Marcus has to deal with his physical and mental trauma before returning to being in the field with his team, but that is easier said than done. Caleb and Marcus also have to deal with some holdout Inquisition pockets bent on causing harm.

I enjoyed this book; we briefly met Marcus at the end of the last book, when Caleb busted him out of the Inquisition prison. This book focuses more on the healing of Marcus than the political fallout from Shaw, Caleb, and Rowan infiltrating the prison. The relationship between Caleb and Marcus slowly grows and develops throughout the book. We also finally get to meet Shaw and Marcus, other team members. All the secondary characters in this book made for chaos throughout the book's first part. They were a fun group; you could see how they all cared for each other. Overall, I enjoyed this book as much as the first book, but read the first book before picking this one up, or you will be lost.

I was honestly a bit disappointed. I really loved the first part and I was very excited for this one. But it just didn't live up to my expectations.
The characters were just as good as they were in
the first novel but it was honestly just really boring. I made it to about 50% of the book and absolutely nothing interesting had happened yet. The pacing is just so slow that I just started skimming the pages. And while I do enjoy some fluff and filler in between the more interesting parts, the interesting parts were either extremely short or simply not there. It's basicly a book full of fluff. Meaningless, empty fluff. A cute read but I feel like it should have been a short story a maybe a novella but it ended up being longer than the first one...

One of the things I love about this series is the family aspect. Even though most are not family by blood, they are found family. The friendship is deep & you really can see how much they care about each other & that they would lay down their lives for one another. So, we have Caleb, an Alpha wolf shifter, who rescued Marcus who is a vampire. They also realize that they are mates. We get to meet Marcus' sire and brother & sisters. We also have some feral werecats who it is believed to have been experimented on and our MC's, along with their friends, are trying to help them. This was a very good addition to this trilogy. Off to the next one.

I quite liked the world of the first book and was really looking forward to the next in the series. However, I feel like this one is a bit of a come down after the first book. Everything just seemed to move very quickly and I was often confused as to why the characters were making the decisions they were.

I loved the characters and the world building! The variety in supernatural species was wonderful (the main characters are 'only' a werewolf and a vampire, though different than the stereotypical image). The plot was rather easy going and slow, more focused on the romantic and familial relationships than action. It was actually quite nice, there was still enough interesting stuff going on and some action so it didn't get boring.
