Lonely Platypus wants to play, but where should he go? Should he jump with the kangaroos? Leap with the possums? Fly with the bats? Every time he tries to find out―skipping, hopping, dipping, dropping―he winds up going splat instead. Can a SPLATypus find a place where he belongs? This rhyming, rollicking story is perfect for reading aloud.
I wish this cute little story was longer, my nieces and nephews are going to love this story book . Splatapus is a truly funny little character looking for his place in the world. This will be a bed time favorite.
Bright colorful pictures accompany text that encourages readers to find their own special place in the world. Could also be used as a mentor text to teach rhyming, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and vivid verbs.
Our family loved this book and not just because of an abiding appreciation for platypi (Platypuses? Platypus? ...whatever, you know what I mean!)
The little platypus is eager to play and make friends but it doesn't quite know which fun activity to join in with. The jumping kangaroos? All the different speed racing events? How is a platypus to find the right activity for a fun afternoon?!
It tries them all, of course! And when it fails, it gets up and says "well, that didn't work out. Let's try another thing" and keeps on trying until it finds the right fit. It's a good lesson for little kids, dressed in a fun rhyming scheme that will be easy to read aloud for young readers and older caretakers alike. The illustrations are bold enough to keep young listeners interested and still detailed enough that they won't seem too simple to older readers.
I loved this book and can't wait to add a copy to my son's collection.
That's a pretty sophisticated pun in the title of this book about a platypus. No doubt it will go over the heads of most readers, and they'll just think it's a name for the character.
A character who is otherwise simply called "Platypus."
Reviewing this tale, I think it's important to realize that this is clearly a story intended for very early readers. Ambitious author Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen doesn't only give us rhyming verses. Her preference is for three rhymes per verse. For instance:
Dingoes chase and run with grace. Platypus says, "I'll go race."
ESPECIALLY EFFECTIVE IS...
The author's approach is not only simple, as it needs to be for earliest readers. In addition, the approach is physical... mostly about movement.
As a result, the story is relatable.
Meanwhile the exotic animals chosen for this tale (like dingoes and kangaroos) can add a certain glamour.
FIVE STARS for Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen and also for her illustrator, Jackie Urbanovic.
I want to thank Goodreads First Reads Giveaway and Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen, author of Splatypus that I won in the Giveaway. (Note: I could only get the book to open on my new Kindle Fire, on my other 3 Kindles and my PC Kindle program it would not open.)
The first thing the preschool children that I shared this book with was to express how much they liked the illustrations, which I thought were excellent and matched the story line perfectly. The story shows children that we are all different and finding a place where we fit and can achieve takes trial and error. I then pointed out that some children in our class loved books and had started to read while others spent as much time as possible in dramatic play or art. Spaltypus is a great book to share with preschool children and then let them talk about it and direct them to ideas of acceptance of our differences.
Platypus is excited for the day and he just wants to play; but he's not sure how. When he sees a kangaroo hopping by he decides to try jumping too. The results are disastrous. Then he tries running and chasing like the dingoes, but that isn't good at all. He tries to mimic the play of several other Australian animals, each attempt ending in an oops. He becomes very disheartened that he will never find his place. But then he sees two swans and decides to give himself one last chance. He steps into the water and viola! Success!
A perfect story about trying until you succeed. Kids will scrabble to be the one to yell SPLATYPUS!
How Splatypus finally learns where he belongs and is very happy!
I felt this author did a great job in helping younger kids to know that TR they need not to give up easily to find where they are good at and can enjoy where they feel they fit in... With beautiful large illustrations and easy to read font, too! These are my reasons for wanting to rate this as a five * book and recommend it for kids ages 3-8 and or in grades P-2. I received this for free using KU, in return, here's my honest review. Super job Sudipta! By Sunny.
This book popped up on my Kindle recommended list and the cover art was so vivid, I couldn't resist checking it out. With a platypus protagonist, how could I pass it up? What an adorable book. Having seen all of the book's players in real life, it was super fun to see how the art captured their personalities. I love how our platy is friends with everyone, regardless of paw, flipper, or claw. Exceptionally illustrated, this is truly a great read for the little ones.
Not that great. Very forced in rhyming everything. The onomatopoeia is okay but gets old VERY fast. The main character is charming and colorful but the actual poetry of the writing is forced and awkward. Everything is predictable. I like the moral and ending...it could just be a lot more interesting seeing how I like the main character and that creature hasn't been used in literature much. And rhyming splatypus and giving him that name also is...obvious and tiresome.

I won this beautifully illustrated book in a goodreads giveaway, thank you. This book first grabs you with the beautiful, colorful cover. The story then goes on to introduce you to a lonely platypus that just wants a friend. As he searches, his search is unfruitful. Right when he gives up, he finally finds a place to be free and accepted. I think this story is beautiful with a message of perseverance.
Rhyming and bouncy and fun. I could see this being fun for storytime. I only wish it ended with platypus instead of splatypus. And that the illustrations weren't as cartoony. But yanno, it'll do just fine!
Splatypus by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen is a great book for reading to preschoolers. The illustrations are wonderful and will keep the younger children's attention. It is an enjoyable story.
Liked the illustrations. Liked the (for me) unusual setting/animals. The rhymes weren't too annoying. But wish the ending had been stronger--that he had found another Platypus, that his name had been changed to something more affirmative, something! Just felt something was lacking at the end.
This book brilliantly introduces the platypus to people of all ages--I mean Splatypus! I liked the swimming part, because I love to swim. "Splatypus", by Sudipta Barren-Quallen, is an animal-identifying adventure.
My Grandson & I loved it! Great for new readers as well as too young to read as it has action enough to keep their interest. The pictures are very colorful and cute even on my Kindle! Would differently recommend! I will try to find more by this author.
What a cute story about looking for your place. Also , a inexperience with Australian animals is wonderful! So glad I found it. Will read again! Easy for oral reading!
At first I thought this was going to be one of those annoying books about finding the place where you fit in to be among your own kind. Fortunately Splatypus doesn't have to find another platypus, just somewhere where he can be himself. Cute but nothing particularly special.
I gave this book a 3 because some of the sentences didn't make sence
I really liked this book but I gave it a 4 because some of the sentences didn't make sense. But if you are reading this author of was a great book to read.
This book is so silly and fun to read, but it also has important messages about perseverance, having a positive mindset, and about the feeling of belonging. My child really enjoyed this story and so did I.
Splatypus has a hard time finding where he fits in among his friends, but he finally does! Readers will enjoy the rhyming scheme and learning about animals that they might not read about very often.
This toddler and up book features a young platypus trying to make friends with different types of animals. He can't find his place amongst any animals. Will he ever. simple bright and fast paced.
