High concept technology, the supernatural, and Arthurian legend elements
#3 in the Pillars of Fire and Light series, and looks like a fourth is in the works. I have read a lot of negative reviews for the previous books. “Slow starting”, “… one very ugly misogynist word… spoken by one character…”, and “muddled” among others. Generally, these folk don’t like to read swear words, and were frustrated because the plot elements were not laid out in a concrete timeline with detailed explanations about what was going on. Paint-by-numbers storytelling? And some decided not to continue reading. Ken Britz’s theme and writing style has polarized readers. And that is not always a bad thing. I enjoyed the challenges provided by Ken Britz. The evidence for this was that at no time was I tempted to skim over portions of the story. I loved the character development. The technologies brought to mind the wonder I felt while reading my first science fiction sixty years ago. Six or so years have passed since the end of Apollo Burn. There is an all-out war between the relatively few Paladins with more advanced technologies and the Chevaliers who are numerically superior. Weapons of mass destruction are available. The setting is the present time, but it has had to adjust to the new forces that are at work. A third factor – Nemesis – has emerged, with the intent to either destroy the Paladins and Chevaliers, or break them to its will. Characters pronounced as dead in earlier books reappear, with reasonable explanations. There is a lot of hate and rage between some of the characters. Characters are put to the test when self-sacrifice is called for. And strong female characters outnumber those of strong males. Ken Britz may seem like a work-in-progress, but he does very good work, and I am with him for the long term.
Wow! Another fantastic chapter of this wonderful series. Unexpected twists, and a most heartfelt love story in the midst of chaos. Now, I will buy the printed books to add to my library and of course, read them again while waiting ever so impatiently for Book 4. A must read series!
