On one side: the unlikely alliance of a teenaged mercenary, a warrior woman, a young thief and a small feisty dragon, plus assorted friends. On the other: a religious zealot and his army of mutants, bent on destruction.
Raised as a servant in his father’s household, Faradon is denied his birthright. Now, at the age of nineteen, his life is threatened by his elder brother. His only hope of escape is to adopt the perilous existence of a mercenary. But his innate sense of justice embroils him in a bloody conflict to save his homeland. Even with the help of a dragon whose courage, shrewdness and big mouth make up for his diminutive size, and the legendary sword Glemraed, can Faradon and his allies withstand an enemy armed with ancient technology recovered from the stars?

Readers’ Comments “A totally enjoyable fantasy adventure led by the engimatic Faradon. There´s not a lot of brotherly love in this book! Which is where the story starts, poor Faradon forced to work as a kitchen boy in his own father´s house. Although it´s a bit slow going in the middle, this is a solid adventure with plenty of twists and a strong ending. I suspect it´s the beginning of a set of books; a set I´d be happy to return to.” Male reader, aged 44 “If you enjoy lots of sword play, this novel is for you. The author works hard to bring the small cast of central characters springing off the page. The editing is excellent although I felt the middle could have been cut into; it´s a very long book. But, hey! It´s fantasy, and for fantasy readers, if a novel is not the thickness of a brick, it´s not proper fantasy. The cover´s ok, but very typical of the genre.” Female reader, aged 28 “This is a long novel! Complex too. But that´s okay with me. There´s plenty going on here to keep fantasy readers enthralled. I liked the protagonist, Faradon, a lot. He´s a young man in this story, but he develops a lot as he´s forced to step out on his own. It´s not a particularly original story in as much as it has all the elements of ´epic fantasy´, a legendary sword, lots of fighting, an underdog to will on, etc, etc. But most fantasy readers love all that stuff, so it´s not a problem. For the most part, I´d recommend it.” Male reader, aged 68
To Sum It Up: ‘A complex fantasy adventure with a strong cast of fully developed characters. A RED RIBBON WINNER and highly recommended.’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
