When GoodReads recommended this as a new thriller coming out in December, I jumped onto Amazon and ordered a copy. Gen decides to spend a weekend out with her sister, Meg, after realizing that her husband is cheating. Late one night, she throws her wedding ring off the balcony at the hotel and decides to get some fresh air. When Meggie wakes up the next morning, Gen has not returned and starts to look for her. Secrets unfold as we discover who has Gen and what has led up to this moment.

As a thriller, this is the worst thriller that I have ever read. In the first 1/3 of the book, we know who took her. It isn’t a mystery. Therefore, there was no build up in the end. Also, the author didn’t tell the story in a compelling way. When I read this, I was thinking this was going to be a refreshed version of Gone Girl, but it fell short. When I read thrillers, the beginning usually takes a little bit to ramp up but by the end the pages are turning. At the last part of the book, the author usually uses short chapters as well as shorter sentences. Your eyes and arms are moving quickly and you feel as though you are running and almost catching up to the “bad guy.” However, this author had uniformity throughout the book. The chapters were short. At the end, instead of getting shorter, they were getting longer! The sentence structure also remained constant throughout the book so there really wasn’t a huge build up.

This book was extremely boring, and it was a chore to read. I had to turn to the audiobook to help me stay on task to finish this one, and the most exciting thing that happened while reading this book was that I discovered 2X speed so that I could get the misery over sooner.

The book was extremely repetitious--We heard over and over and over again about how nice and a “good man” Joe is, how Meg is a good person, and Thad is either a jerk or a “good man.” There were too many pregnant pauses. Some things did not make sense. Meg says that Joe is blue collar, and that is the reason she can’t be with him. What is so wrong with being blue collar? Many blue collar workers make more than white collar workers! Meg wasn’t pleased with Joe’s vocabulary? Lame. So lame. A lawyer might know words like “Mens rea” and jurisprudence and “Res ipsa loquitur” but why would Meg care? And then she can’t wait to buddy up with Hawk. He even makes a comparison about himself and Joe that they both do well for themselves but no one is asking them for ransom. If she has a problem with blue collar workers than why would she go after a police officer? It doesn’t make any sense. Also, why would Gen leave her computer on the plane? Why wouldn’t she have a password on her computer especially when she is a famous author with unpublished manuscripts on her computer?

My apologies to the author, because I have great respect that you wrote this book, found an editor, and a publisher and saw this book through to print. I know that that is no easy feat, and most people talk about writing a book but very few will ever meet this level of success. However, I don’t write reviews like this to tear you down so I will not leave you empty handed (if you so choose). My recommendation is before writing your next book to read Gone Girl, The Girl on The Train, and The Last Time I Lied. I, myself, am a Creator (of videos, not books), and it is always tough to hear negative feedback. If you want me to read another one of your books and give you feedback, I would be more than happy to. Don’t stop dreaming and writing because of this review.

Okay. I loved it. I loved Gen. I loved the well developed, fair, karma is a bitch kind of conclusion. I loved the intriguing chapters and learning more about psychological evolution of Gen. How she struggled with jealousy, hurt, betrayal. How she dealt with her pain.

And of course I just wanted to spit on the faces of two characters. Meg, sister dearest and Thad- husband assholest are so far best hatable, punchable, detestable, rotten eggs throwable characters I’ve been lately introduced.

Even though some plot holes and the illogical procedures of police investigation parts a little ruined the credibility of the story, the psychological approach to the characters and intriguing pace already earned my thriller fan points.

Quick summary of story-line: Gen, romance novels author is struggling from an ugly divorce. A scumbag cheating husband destroyed everything they had built for years. Now she wants to leave everything behind for a fresh start. But her sister Meg invites her to spend quality time in Big Apple to celebrate her new beginning. She accepts her offer.

They have great time at first. Fancy dinner, too much drinks and you may imagine heavy consumption of alcohol brings out more ugly memories and force a wounded person do something irresponsible or illogical ( been there done that !!!)

As a result, Gen finds herself at the balcony, throwing at her wedding ring. After that she wants to gather her wits by taking a walk. But her walk takes more time than her sister Meg imagined. She never comes back!

What happened to Gen? Is something more sinister and dangerous behind her disappearance? Did someone hurt or kidnap her? Or did she do something to herself?

From the flashbacks and throughout police investigations, we realize her sister is not so sweet, innocent. She can be involved with her disappearance. Did she do anything to her?

My big mouth and nonstop typing hands need to stop here. I can only say: this is my first book of the author. I truly enjoyed her writing style and well- developed characterization skills. So I’m looking forward to read more works of her.

And I’m rounding up 3.5 stars to 4 fast paced, captivating, attention taker, brilliant, well concluded stars!

Special thanks to NetGalley and HARLEQUIN/ MIRA for sharing this incredible arc with me in exchange my honest opinions.

Okay, this author made some interesting choices here.

The Last to See Her is definitely a wild ride. One, I hate to admit, I didn't enjoy all that much.

This Domestic Thriller follows two sisters on a trip to New York City where things go horribly wrong.

Gen is currently going through a bitter divorce. Meg, her sister and best friend, is heading to a medical conference in NYC. Trying to help her sister out, to get her mind off her current troubles, Meg invites Gen to go along.

Gen agrees and meets her sister in the city, where they immediately head out for dinner and drinks.

The ladies end up letting loose and having more drinks than they normally would. Returning to the hotel a little drunk, they get into a conversation regarding Gen's marriage.

It seems to stress her out. In fact, she throws her 4-carat engagement ring from the balcony and promptly states she is going out for a walk. She needs some fresh air.

Gen stumbles out of the room and out of the hotel. Meg, who doesn't think it is the greatest idea, nevertheless puts up no real fight. Her sister is a grown woman. She can do what she wants.

Meg lays down and ends up passing out. When she wakes up the next morning, Gen has never returned.

Meg is understandably alarmed. It's a big city, and not one her sister knows that well. Where could she be?

The narrative alternates between Gen and Meg's perspectives initially, with both before and after sections. Eventually, other perspectives are added in, including Gen's estranged husband, Thad.

The chapters are short, continuing to build tension as the story goes. You learn about both Gen and Meg's lives in the lead-up to the ill-fated NYC trip. There are twists, turns, deceptions and betrayals galore.

In the beginning, I was really into this. It didn't take long for the action to kick off and I was definitely intrigued.

For a while the tension was building quite nicely, then for me, it just crossed over into eye roll territory, from which it never returned.

By the last 25% I was racing through, not because I couldn't wait to see what would happen, but because I couldn't wait for it to be over.

With this being said, just because it wasn't a good fit for my tastes, doesn't mean it won't be for you. There are definitely a lot of readers who will enjoy this. Sadly, I just wasn't one of them.

Thank you so much to the publisher, Mira Books, for providing me with a copy of this to read and review.

Even though it wasn't a new favorite for me, I still very much appreciate the opportunity to provide my opinion.

I thought this book was a total mess.

The two main character's names, Gen and Meg, were switched constantly. The cop investigating Gen's disappearance was inept (i.e. he never went through Gen's belongings, he left evidence -- the note and ring -- with Meghan, he never found Gen's diary, and I'm not sure how he was supposed to actually investigate at all, since he was having coffee with Meg so frequently--not to mention sharing information with her, despite her being a person of interest in his investigation...the shitty detective work goes on and on and on). Jenkins, the private investigator was just as bad...how did he not find out that key point in the story after all the months he worked for Gen?

I honestly don't think Gen's mental illness was portrayed well. And how the hell wasn't she diagnosed when she was younger? Her family just said she was "different."

I was also annoyed that our main character was called Gen and her mom was called Gin. Umm...we ran out of names I guess? Speaking of the characters, I can't say there was a single likeable one in the bunch; maybe Joe.

Mostly, this just felt choppy and uninspired. It seemed like the author couldn't figure out where to go with the story, so she'd randomly add characters and/or events to further things...but it wasn't cohesive, and it definitely didn't flow. And there was TONS of repetition...to the point exact, entire pages were included multiple times throughout the book.

I won't be recommending this one.

3.5 stars-rounded up.....🤔

Gen, a romance novelist is about to sign the divorce papers which will dissolve her marriage to her cheating husband, Thad.

Her sister Meg, a renowned Physician, needs to attend a convention in New York, so Gen accompanies her, so they can “celebrate”!

After a decadent dinner and too much to drink, they return to their hotel suite, where Gen proceeds to throw her very expensive wedding ring off of the hotel balcony.

Needing fresh air after her defiant act, she decides to take a late evening walk alone, and vanishes without a trace.

I would categorize this novel as Domestic Suspense, and the writing was stronger on the “domestic” than the “suspense” aspect of the book.

The author captures the nuances of relationships well, those between sisters, and those between spouses.

On the suspense side, you will have to suspend some disbelief, as to what initially happens, once Gen disappears into the night.

And, I don’t believe the police could demand that you remain in NYC because your sister has gone missing, without proof of a crime-nor would the Detective become so chummy with Meg, the sister being investigated, since she was the last to see her...

BUT, I really liked Gen, and sympathized with her as her marriage crumbled, and she began her descent into madness.

Meg, though, often seemed too girlish and immature to be a renowned Doctor to me.

Despite a few flaws with the sometimes simplistic writing, I was completely engaged in the story, and I looked forward to returning to the book whenever I had a chance to sit down to read.

And, I actually really enjoyed how the story ended!
It was fun to reread chapter one with some “blanks filled in”-and to read the epilogue as well.

I would like to thank Mira books for providing a digital arc through NetGalley in exchange for a candid review!

This book will be publish on December 15, 2020.

I read a book by @courtneycolewrites last year called Mine. It is a juicy good thriller with great tension, and I knew I had to read every other book she writes. Under her nom de plume, Courtney Evan Tate, her “darker side,” I’ve also devoured her I’ll Be Watching You. She now has this newest book, The Last to See Her, and I am happy to say, I loved it, too! Love all around!

Two sisters travel to NYC after one is on the cusp of a divorce from a cheating husband. That same sister, Gen, disappears, and her sister, Meg, is the last to see her alive.

As with her other two books, the tension (I love tension in my thrillers) begins from page one. There are twists and turns and lots of secrets...and the ending is SO very good.

I loved Gen! I also loved to hate some of the other characters. I adore how Courtney Evan Tate addresses karma in her books. Her writing is skillfully smooth, which keeps me flipping the pages and prevents the tension from waning. Exactly my kind of thriller! Ok, Courtney Evan Tate/Courtney Cole, I’m ready for your next one!

I received a gifted copy.

This book starts off quite strongly. It's a fascinating premise about a woman who disappears, but then it quickly went off the rails for me.

None of the characters were particularly believable, and I didn't like or want to root for any of them. The professionals were extraordinarily bad at their jobs--the PI has photos of something that supposedly only occurred once, yet he didn't uncover a major thing about Thad's life that was totally out there for anyone to figure out. Despite that, not much even happens in the story, it's pretty easy to figure out what happened to Gen and then it just falls apart. The story spun off into some odd directions,
There was some repetition, I guess to show the other side of the initial situation, but it just didn't seem plausible or necessary.
By the end I just felt like it was spiraling all around and the author was attempting to tie threads together and it just didn't work.

Unfortunately, this book just did not work for me on many levels. I think if you are able to just suspend belief and go for the ride the story is taking you, you might enjoy it more than I did.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

Favorite Quotes:

Divorcing a lawyer was the only thing worse than being married to one.

He seemed intrigued now, at the very least. Mention sex, and you get a man’s attention. It wasn’t always the attention you wanted, though.

… a bustling room filled with ringing phones and the sounds of metal file cabinets slamming closed. If a place could smell like unsolved crime, it would be this.

Thad is an ambulance chaser. He’ll survive. He’s like a cockroach after an atomic bomb.

My Review:

I was waffling a bit on how to rate this twisty tale but a check of my highlighted quotes removed all doubt. This wily wordsmith is a master of deception as nothing was as it was initially presented, even after I thought I had it solved, it wasn’t. She craftily stitched her tale with several shrewdly paced and slyly nuanced storylines that took sudden sharp turns that left me somewhat addled and grappling for a hold.

I would never play cards with this devious little madam as I’m sure she would have an entire deck hidden up her sleeves which she would cunningly deploy while regaling me with enticing tidbits and enthralling tales as she cleverly fleeced me of my life savings. And silly me, I would most likely merrily hand it over while stunned and disoriented yet well entertained, which is the very condition I’m currently circling now.

Where to start with this one. If I took a drink every time the author used the words “pregnant pause”, I might have ended up a little tipsy. With so many words to choose from, I just found it odd for those 2 words to be used repetitively in a book. Moving on...

The Last to See Her is one of those books that I find hard to review. The story wasn’t bad and I actually wanted to know the outcome, but the writing and dialogue are just mediocre. I would definitely classify it more as a domestic drama rather than a thriller. 3 stars.

The Last to See Her by Courtney Evan Tate is a thriller story. The format in this one is one that changes the point of view, mostly of that of the sisters, and also has flashes back to the past to help build the story.

Gen is about to get a divorce from her husband so when her sister, Meg, has a work trip scheduled to New York City Meg invites Gen to come along. The sisters arrive in NY and head out on the town to take Gen’s mind off of her problems and a few drinks are had.

After arriving back at the hotel both sisters are quite a bit tipsy but Gen is still stressed over her marriage and goes for a walk. Meg ends up falling asleep only to awaken to an empty room with Gen never having returned. Of course Meg brings the police in to find out just what happened to her sister that night in the city.

The Last to See Her is one of those stories that for me the characters weren’t particularly likable but I didn’t mind that as I became invested in their story. However, my lower rating for The Last to See Her was not because I wasn’t engaged in this story as I read it but because when finished I was left with questions. To me this book had a lot of holes left open during everything that happened that I just couldn’t find myself excited after finishing this one up. Due to those things I questioned I had to lower my rating for this one to two and a half stars.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

A twisted sinister tale about two sisters. OK I’m going to bust out my complement sandwich because I am truly conflicted with this one.

The good(the bread), this was a fast-paced addictive story. Jen has recently left her husband after she caught him cheating on her. she is now in NYC on a girls trip with her sister and BFF Meg. after a night of fine dining and drinking Jen goes out for a walk to get some fresh air and never comes back. Meg is frantic and begins the search for her sister.

The not so good (the meat), there were a lot of plot holes in this book. I really don’t usually notice things like this but there were a few things I just had a hard time overlooking. For example why would it matter if Jen stole someone’s gun in Chicago when she went missing in New York? She could not have brought the gun on the plane. then there were some inconsistencies with journal entries and where the journal was found. There were also quite a few other little things here and there that just did not sit with me very well. Like I have no idea why husband Thad kept a secret he did? And this leads me to some other questions, but I digress.

The good (the bread(, The story held my attention. Also as unlikable as most of the characters were in the story they all were extremely well developed. all in all a good escapist read with some minor flaws.

*** Big thank you to Mira/Harlequin for my gifted copy of this book. All opinions are my own. ***

(2.5) It started out well enough- I was invested in the sisters & curious where we were headed. But then it just kinda went off the rails. & honestly I can usually suspend belief & just enjoy the ride, but this also got really repetitive.. & ultimately it got to a point where I almost wanted to skip a chunk just to get to the end. (Ok I didn’t skip it but I DID resort to speeding up the audio to make it through!) I must say I did appreciate where we wound up in the very last chapter or 2.. But overall it just wasn’t for me.

This book started off strong but became increasingly confusing and unrealistic as it went on. It centers on Genevieve (Gen), who is reeling from finding out her husband Thad cheated on her, and takes a weekend trip with her sister Meghan to New York. Lo and behold, Gen ends up disappearing without a trace her first night there, and a ton of secrets are uncovered in a narrative that flips back and forth between the past and the present.

The writing itself was good, and I like the style of going back and forth between past and present. I felt engaged with the characters to begin with but got annoyed with them as time went on. I liked both the private investigator and the detective, however, both of them did incompetent things that didn't seem indicative of their personalities. My primary issue with the book is that most of these issues could have been solved if these characters just spoke to one another. I grew increasingly frustrated with the lies and overreactions that stemmed from everyone keeping so many secrets, some of which I never even understood the reasoning behind not opening up.

The book took a big turn as it raced toward the end that I felt turned Gen into a completely different character than we were led to believe. While I always enjoy a story with a lot of twists, I didn't really get it and couldn't find evidence earlier in the story to back up this big reveal. This, as well as many other parts of the book, required me to suspend my disbelief.

Overall, definitely a fast paced story but it just became less realistic and less cohesive as the book went on. I am glad I read it and it held my interest, but there are just too many remaining questions and inconsistencies to give it more than 3 stars. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Well, I suppose it's a good thing I went into The Last to See Her with low expectations because I did find myself to be pleasantly surprised. This was nothing particularly special or sparkling, but it was engaging and compelling enough to keep me company at work despite its numerous issues.

Romance author Gen and her surgeon sister Meg are the best of friends. They share everything with one another and always have—or so it seems. But when Gen accompanies Meg to a conference in New York City to get away from her dramatic divorce with her cheating husband back in Chicago, she goes missing one night after the sisters have gotten fairly drunk and Meg begins the challenge of locating her missing sister. She enlists the help of Detective Nate Hawk, and together they discover that this disappearance is not all that it seems at first. Things unshared between sisters begin to unravel.

This was enjoyable enough with a fun and semi-twisty plot, but felt rushed and heavy-handed. Another reviewer mentioned the repetitive use of the terms "pregnant pause" and "mercurial" and this drove me wild while reading. It was so annoying! The dialogue often felt cheap and forced, and some of the descriptions made me actually scoff aloud and roll my eyes right here in the middle of my office. Gen describes her 5-year-old nephew as smelling of "puppy dogs and sunshine" at one point, I kid you not. It was soooo bad. There were also a ridiculous amount of plot holes and things that didn't add up or make any sense at all. Detective Hawk is terrible at his job and exceedingly unprofessional, and honestly so is the P.I. Gen hired to follow her husband, even though he was one of the more redeemable characters. The characterizations in this book were all very surface level, and this is something I'm finding to be true with a lot of thrillers as I explore the genre more that makes me think maybe thrillers aren't for me, although I do enjoy the elements of mystery. If anyone has enjoyed any thrillers with a particular depth of character to them, please recommend them to me!

I failed to understand a lot of motivations of the characters and did not find them to be realistic or sensible at all. The book could have done a better job handling the clear mental illness Gen was suffering from and did a disservice to audiences and those living with mental illness in reality by being so vague in regards to her mental health. I also think this could have been such an interesting exploration of sisterhood and of coping with the mental illness of a loved one, but it didn't dive too deep into those topics even though there was a great opportunity to.

All that being said, this was enjoyable enough. I haven't read enough of this genre to compare it to anything that might be useful, but if you enjoy run-of-the-mill thrillers and the plot sounds intriguing to you, you might enjoy this one!

SO MANY MIXED FEELINGS. In a way, I'm in awe at how many balls were juggled here without dropping one. And yet, I'm also bamboozled with a love/hate feeling about this one. I have a feeling this is going to be quite a divisive read amongst readers and I'm ALWAYS here for that! So when it comes down to it, I have to split the difference with this one because I honestly don't know which way to turn. Does this make me a method reviewer? 😉 (It only makes sense if you know, but even if you do, it probably still doesn't....)
I literally had to press my hands to my forehead at the 65% mark because really? REALLY? C'mon..... I understand marriages falling apart. I understand infidelity. I understand insecurity. I even understand hiding a past that's really not necessary but why not for the sake of drama and hey, we're all human so we all have our *things* other people may not understand that. But couple allllll of that with ***** being able to do ******. Um... This one just got too convoluted at the end. I was so into this for it to take that many left turns at Albuquerque. I will say that I didn't *quite* expect one part... mainly because it doesn't seem feasible but I am a sucker for suspending reality. This is fiction after all. 😉

Despite having these issues, my eyes didn't get stuck in the back of my head from rolling them.... instead, I found that this was written in a compelling way that even while I was shouting "C'MON", I still couldn't keep my eyes off the pages. The pacing and succinct way the author brings this story to us is very addictive. And helloooooo, DRAMA - I love it. This is definitely heavy on the domestic and less so on any thrillery/suspense you may anticipate. So grab your popcorn and adult beverage of choice and sit yourself done for some family "fun". 😏

I loved the intrigue in the story as one night, on a midnight walk, a sister disappeared, and it was left to the other to try to find her. My first book, though would not be the last, by author Courtney Evan Tate kept me up, reading late at night, just to know the reason behind the disappearance.

There were a few twists, one really made me gasp… I had a – Noooo… I can’t believe it – moment, then the book moved swiftly on the investigation and truth reveals. The love between both the sisters was genuine, the bond from childhood made was apparent. The author sure made me feel anger and a need for revenge just like the main character did. I could understand her pain and jealousy.

Smooth writing and swift pace, though didn’t really like the cop investigating the case, he was too sloppy, if you ask me. A few moments where story seemed to lose its tautness and reasons was seen, but nothing dampened by curiosity, really.

Overall, the characterization was full-on, where each added a layer to the story. I enjoyed getting to know their raison d’être. Karma sure got them all. Quite entertaining.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.I am always on the lookout for a good psychological thriller to sink my literary teeth in, so when this book came on my radar, I jumped at the chance to read it. The story proved to be entertaining and quite the page turner.

In this story we meet Genevieve, a romance author, and Meg a doctor. Two sisters who loved each other dearly. Genevieve is getting a divorce from her cheating husband, Thad. To celebrate her pending freedom, she and her sister went to New York city and had a blast dining and drinking. Upon the return their hotel, Genevieve went for a walk, but never came back.

A book of secrets, lies, betrayal, jealousy, infidelity and revenge. Genevieve’s disappearance opened up a big can of worms.

Despite having some serious plot holes, the twists in the storyline had me clamouring for more. I needed to know how it ended. The author did a good job in keeping me entertained, but the anticlimactic ending left me in a state of disappointment.

On the surface Last to See Her was an intriguing read, but there were aspects of the story which the reader felt needed further development. Without a doubt the main character had serious mental issues, which her family was aware of it, but nothing had been done about it over the years. I saw the reasoning behind Genevieve’s actions, but those of the secondary characters baffled me. Most of the events, which occurred could have been avoided if communication had played a key role. In addition, the incompetence of the private investigator hired by Genevieve added to the whole debacle. I cannot understand how he never uncovered Thad’s secrets during the course of his investigations.

Almost all the characters had secrets, and I found them to be an unreliable bunch. Thad and Meg proved to be the worst of the bunch. Their condescending attitude worked my nerves into a fray. Added to that Meg behaves like a spoilt child. The fact she was lusting after the police Detective working on sister’s case despite claiming to be happily married didn’t place her in a good light.

Conclusion/Recommendation
In spite of the issues highlighted, I still enjoyed the story. Fans of psychological thrillers who have no issues with unrealistic scenes would enjoy what The Last to See Her has to offer.

I have such mixed feelings about this book. The premise was so good.

Gen, a romance novelist, is about to sign divorce papers and will soon be free of Thad. She accompanies sister Meg to a medical convention in New York City to celebrate. After some heavy drinking, she flings her expensive wedding ring off the hotel balcony. She then goes for a walk alone. And that is the last time she is seen.

The search for Gen is now in the hands of a NYC detective. The story is told in both present time as well as Gen and Meg's pasts. Their stories unfold and we learn more about the state of Gen's marriage as secrets are revealed.

I stayed glued to the story as I wanted to learn the truth. Some of the twists were predictable, which is OK with me. What prevents me from rating this book higher are some serious plot holes that I couldn't get past. I still liked the book and was glad I read it (it's a quick read) but since I had such high hopes, I am ultimately disappointed. You may be able to get past some of the things I got hung up about so check it out.

Rated 3.5 stars.

Gen is on the verge of a divorce from her cheating husband. When her sister, Meg, has a convention to attend in the Big Apple, she invites Gen along to celebrate her newly found freedom.
The 2 sisters have a night out and get drunk . Gen is asked why is she still wearing her wedding ring. So Gen takes it off and throws it off the balcony.
Then Gen decides to take a walk and disappears. The next morning Meg calls the police to report her missing. But of course she has to wait 24 hours.
As Meg is looking for her sister we find out about secrets and cheating. Twists and turns that kept me wanting more.

Yikes, I did not enjoy a lot of this: the “hysterical scorned woman” trope, the portrayal of the one disabled character... thank goodness it moved fast 😬 The characters also felt hollow and underdeveloped. This was disappointing.

The Last to See Her is the newest suspense thriller by author Courtney Evan Tate (Courtney Cole).

The main characters of this book are Genevieve/Gen and her sister Meghan/Meg.

The story starts with Genevieve and her sister in New York City. Genevieve is a famous romance author. And Meghan is an impressive doctor.

Something happens in NYC that becomes the focus for the rest of the book. A character disappears. I didn't read the book blurb before starting this book. But I found the title so chilling ... I knew something sinister was going happen.

The book has a bunch of 3rd person POVs (the main two are Gen and Meg). But we have both BEFORE and NOW timelines. This is sometimes not my favorite method of storytelling. However in this case I think that it worked very well for the story. I was super curious to find out what happened in the present. But I also found the past very interesting.

There were definitely things that I figured out before they happened. But there were also some completely unexpected developments.

I think that my favorite character was Detective Nate Hawkins. He was a NYC detective. And I enjoyed getting to see his point of view.

Thad was Gen's husband (they were getting divorced). And I was quite intrigued by everything about him, including his secrets.

The ending was interesting. I'm not sure that I was completely sold on what happened. But I really enjoyed the epilogue. And overall this was a very enjoyable thriller.

Two sisters, Genevieve (Gen) and Meghan (Meg) decide to go for a quick trip to New York City. They are both successful at what they do -- Gen is an author and Meg a surgeon. Gen's personal life isn't as sucessful because she's going through a divorce from her cheating husband Thad. They want to let off some steam, so they have a nice dinner and too many drinks.

description

When they go back to their hotel room, Gen throw away her giant diamond ring. After that she decide to go for a night walk in the city. When Meg wake up next morning, Gen hasn't returned from her walk. She gets worried as there is no sign of Gen and she's not answering her phone. Where is she? Did something happen to her?

The premise sounded interesting enough. Sadly for me this story lacked originality and the characters I could care about and root for. The narrative switches back and forth in time and between characters. The way it was done was tiresome to follow and I got bored. I expected more tension, mystery and build-up ... but somehow it just wasn't there. It was okay if you want story of lies, secrets, jealousy, betrayals and unlikeable characters. But I'd rather recommend: The Weekend Away and Before She Disappeared.

3.5 STARS

Meg has a physicians' convention to attend and asks her sister, Gen, to come along with her in sort of a celebration for Gen's divorce from her serial-cheating husband. Going out for few drinks afterwards leads to a couple of drunken ladies and Gen throwing her 4-carat diamond ring out the hotel window where they're staying.

Later, Gen decides to take a walk, get some fresh air, clear her head. Surprisingly she actually sees her ring and picks it up ... that's the last thing she remembers.

When Gen doesn't return to the hotel by the next morning, Meg reports her as missing.

There begins an investigation ... with Meg as the prime suspect ....

Lies, secrets, betrayals ... between sisters ... between their spouses ... nothing sacred.

What happened to Gen?

Alternating chapters are NOW and BEFORE in each of the sisters' voices. There are enough twists and turns to rival a roller coaster ride on steroids. The characters are deftly drawn, issues and all. A few were anything but likable. I'm a little ambivalent about the ending ... it wasn't all that suspenseful or unexpected.

Many thanks to the author / Harlequin - Mira / Netgalley for the digital copy of this psychological drama. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

What I liked about the book was that I kept on reading (although I do not have a lot of time to read nowadays) because I wanted to know what really happened with Genevieve. For me, the book lacked a bit in character development and tension. All characters are a bit flat and since the whole story revolves around what happened with Genevieve, more depth and background would have been good. The ending felt a bit rushed and I think it would have been better to start working towards this ending earlier in the book. So, a good story, a nice read, well written but it lacked something to make it absolutely great.

Since Gen was days away from being divorced and her sister had a conference to attend in New York City, they decided to celebrate there.

The celebration got carried away with both of them becoming very drunk and with Gen throwing her expensive wedding band over the balcony.

Gen then decided to take a walk to clear her head. That definitely was not a good idea because her sister and the doorman were the last to see her.

We follow the lives of both sisters before this incident and in present time. Gen is missing, and Meg has to stay in New York since she is a suspect.

We learn of their childhood, their domestic lives, and their working lives. Gen is currently an author and Meg is a surgeon.

Gen was married to an attorney, and Meg is married to a contractor.

As I read the back story of Gen, that husband was too good to be true. It seemed like he was a fake, and it appears he had been.

Would that make him a suspect in her disappearance even though he still hadn't arrived in New York City yet?

Meg's husband seemed sweet.

Something was going on in all of their lives, but what was it, and did it have anything to do with Gen's disappearance?

THE LAST TO SEE HER has pull-you-in writing and a great story line with big surprises.

When all the truths come out and as things start to get tense, you won't be able to stop reading. You HAVE to find out the answers and the secrets.

It seems like everyone has a secret, and no one is as they appear to be.

There are good twists.

This book is different and just SO good. Don't pass it up. 5/5

This book was given to me by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis: A woman disappears into the dark city night…

Gen is on the verge of a divorce from her cheating husband. When her sister, Meg, has a convention to attend in the Big Apple, she invites Gen along to celebrate her newly found freedom. But the perfect sisters’ getaway quickly goes awry when a tipsy Gen defiantly throws her wedding ring off the hotel room’s balcony. Then, wanting some fresh air, she decides to take a late-evening walk alone and vanishes without a trace.

The investigation that follows uncovers secrets—and betrayals—between sisters and spouses that will twist the truth in on itself until nothing is clear.

What really happened to Gen and who, besides Meg, was the last to see her?

Review: I had to DNF this one. The book had a lot of issues, including that the mental illness in this book was wrote badly and the story of it wasn’t consistent, two main characters names were switched constantly, Gen’s mother is named Gin and in an audiobook that will be too confusing, the criminal justice system was grossly misrepresented, the writing was just bad altogether, and it got to a point where I was so angry while reading this book.

Verdict: It was not for me.

thanks I hate it

it's 2021 let's leave ableist mental health plot twists behind

that doesn't even touch on all the plot holes or breach of logic in character behavior and and and... I want to erase this from my mind

2.75/5 stars rounded up to three.

This book had a promising premise, a great start, with characters with tons of skeleton in their closet, but it all fizzled out real soon.

RTC soon.

On it’s own, it’s offers a great read. From the very beginning you are intrigued, confused and definitely want to know more. The trail of hints sprinkled throughout the book catch you unaware, making you realize you need to pay more attention.
I enjoyed the read – until about the 3/4 mark. Until this point, I was invested, intrigued and incensed at what was happening in the story.
And then I started to feel a bit disquiet about some of the plot points, how the aspect of mental health was dealt with and especially when it came to ‘creative’ individuals – like writers. So, it’s very possible I’m taking this story too personal – and that’s an entirely plausible suggestion.
IF I took that aspect out – it’s a great story with a backstory that weaves a dance of suspicion.
Do I recommend you read it? Absolutely – I have no doubt you’ll enjoy this take on this thriller!
