I could only make it, through the first two books. I felt like I was reading a very bad rip off of Starship Troopers by Robert A Heinlein.

Well...

Very good story but not that great execution. Too much repetition of really unnecessary facts. Logically speaking, not enough logic to keep the story together.

Should be SciFi Horror category.

This is not a series for me. I got through the first three books and began the fourth but could not continue.
I'm not a fan of the horror genre and, to me, this falls solidly into that category.
That said, the author is an excellent writer. His writing vividly depicts the battles (though too gruesome for my tastes) especially when getting into the fourth book.
Finally, I understand the choice to handicap the earthbound forces vs. the space force but it seems to be too much of a difference in technology levels. Some things were too farfetched for me as well (pull a cord to fire a canon on a spacecraft? Non-recoiless slug throwers for zero G combat? Two people to manually operate a turret when the gun could be placed on a rail or use an electro/hydraulic mechanism?)
I gave it 4 stars because of the supurb quality of the writing.

Very good series

This series has a great premise and flows pretty well from beginning to end. The main character's go through he'll battling alien hoards on Earth and far into the cosmos. Arenson takes us into horrible scenes of cruelty waged on the prisoners of the Scum and then the Marauders and shows mankinds indominatable spirit to rise up and fight despite the odds. I would have given 5 stars but found a little too much introspection from all main characters on how much they love and need each other. Still an excellent read and well worth a look.

Imagine Starship troopers the movie... Now strip the satire and humour and imagine it as a straight sci fi war movie.

Thats what this is and if you're looking for that then fine. Some major anachronisms in it that also spoil it as a sci fi tale for example tech has advanced enough for plasma rifles, androids etc but armoured personnel carriers need a hand crank to turn their turrets something solved back in ww1. Stuff like this happens throughout the book and it's just taken as is. I couldn't get past this as especially we're talking about a war story.

I gave the series a try, but I’m giving up a couple of chapters into book four. The plot holes are massive, and each book follows the same pattern: gore, miraculous survival of the protagonists, everyone else dies. Lather, rinse, repeat. Maybe I’m seeing them through a lens of having just finished a long time with Terry Pratchett novels, but the story here couldn’t hold me any longer.

I was completely captivated by this from the very first page. The author’s storytelling is exceptional, weaving together a tale that is both gripping and thought-provoking. The characters felt like real people, and I was invested in their journeys. I was sad to see it end. This one is an absolute must-read!

Hard to stay interested

Captures psychological stresses of war, then belabor the point to excess. Get past books 4 & 5 and it becomes a passab!e story.

"Earthrise" is a profoundly moving exploration of human connection, hope, and resilience against the backdrop of the vast cosmos. The author beautifully weaves together the intricate tapestry of a future where humanity faces both external challenges and internal conflicts. The book is much more than a science fiction tale; it’s a meditation on what it means to be human. The narrative seamlessly shifts between characters, each bringing a unique perspective that adds depth and dimension to the story. The world-building is exceptional, with vivid descriptions that make the settings feel both otherworldly and yet deeply familiar. The author's ability to create a universe that is at once expansive and intimately personal is truly remarkable.

What stands out most in "Earthrise" is the nuanced exploration of themes such as unity, survival, and the enduring spirit of exploration. The characters are complex, with motivations and backstories that make them feel authentic and relatable. They are not just heroes but individuals grappling with their fears, hopes, and dreams, making their journeys all the more compelling. The dialogue is sharp and thought-provoking, often delving into philosophical questions that challenge the reader to think beyond the story itself. The tension between the characters and the greater mission they are part of keeps the plot engaging and drives the narrative forward.

Moreover, the emotional resonance of the book is powerful. The author manages to capture moments of quiet introspection alongside high-stakes drama, creating a balanced and immersive reading experience. There are passages that are beautifully poetic, inviting readers to pause and reflect on the broader implications of the story. "Earthrise" is a testament to the enduring human spirit, a story that reminds us of the infinite possibilities that await when we dare to look beyond our immediate horizons. It's a must-read for fans of thoughtful science fiction and anyone who enjoys a story that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally gripping.

When you first start reading, you can be excused if you think of this as a cheap rip-off of Robert Heinlein's classic, "Starship Troopers." After all, on the surface, it is a story about young people being drafted to fight giant space bugs. Don't let that deceive you. This is actually a story with extremely well-developed characters, an intricate plot, and written by an author who understands the dark side of war and the inner turmoil soldiers deal with.
The story follows 5 principle characters. Marco, a librarian's son who dreams of becoming a writer. Addy, a rough-and-tumble tomboy who is Marco's adopted sister and best friend. Leilani, a homeless girl from the Philippines. Kemi, is Marco's childhood sweetheart who envisions her military career as a glorious enterprise. Einav Ben-Ari, their lieutenant and role model. There are dozens of ancillary characters. Unlike many novels, even these characters are well-written.
Our intrepid characters face incredible odds, but manage to prevail with wit and will, and as they progress in the wars, we come to truly feel their terror, horror and trauma. They witness friends die horrible deaths. They face incredible odds yet manage to prevail. Throughout the story, the heros humanity is revealed and emphasized.
I'm moving on to the remaining novels in this series with great anticipation.

Well.

I have to say that these six books are well written, which is why I gave them 4 stars but I think that they should be classified as Horror rather than Sci-Fi. The hero, Marco, bugged the heck out of me most of the time. He’s supposed to be a sensitive guy but willing to do his duty. There are times when he’s just plain stupid! The whole story was totally depressing and I wondered if I’d be able to keep going when I was halfway through. Because it started off in Toronto I thought at first that the author must be Canadian, but the way that the army training was written I thought he must be writing for the American public if he was. I really got fed up with the valiant few saving the world at the last minute. I also think that the editing wasn’t strict enough. Too much repetition and inaccuracies in the storyline. To be honest, there’s no way that I’ll read the next book. At least the last chapter warned that it’s going to be more horror, blood and guts and practically everyone dying so I won’t get it by mistake. I read the two Mintari books which were ok but also a bit on the depressing side.
So, for all of you who like horror, I’m sure you’ll live it.

I wanted to like this book ... I really did.

Two things undid it for me:

1) The aliens were straight out of the horror genre, and there was too much emphasis on the gory/grotesque side of things which I wasn't in the mood for. If you're a fan of the universe that the Alien movies was written in, you'll enjoy this more than I did.

2) Battle scenes - seriously, we don't need to know about every bullet expended, and every injury incurred. That type of information needs to move the story forward, and in many cases here it felt like "filler". There were a couple of times where characters were injured in battle, and that was used effectively to move the story forward, but many of the remaining scenes could have been shortened considerably.

What a page turning ride!

This set is really enthralling. The characters are wonderfully over the top with their own quirks but still very relatable. The action is gripping. The nasty aliens are truly horrendously vile. Some less and some were a little beyond my belief and I struggled to accept, but then shrugged and read on. Who am I to judge.
The pace between books did not falter. Each book maintained my enthusiasm. It was stressful many times and as Book 6 came to a close, I relaxed and enjoyed the satisfying conclusion; relieved to get to the last few pages when, Wham! Another sneaky side shot.
Oh my. More nasties to contend with. I don’t know if I can survive any more…but I am going to find out!

Review of Earthrise Super Box Set: books 1-6

Once again I review another Arenson Sci-fi masterpiece. I have always some of the author's books in the past. Between the sadness, the terror and the comedy, and yes romantic encounters. I believe he has touched on most of his character's emotions. The one criticism I have comes from my wife who says you don't have to describe sexual encounters in such detail. I do have to agree. In Hemingway's time they had censors, but he could describe a love situation and your imagination did the rest. Anyway read this series for yourself, you will like it.

Really is an EPIC SERIES

Just completed books 1 thru 6 am amazed at how well Daniel Arenson has structured this, the characters realistic people, with the strengths and weaknesses in all of us.
Reading this brings the trials, fears, expectations of being drafted for war in a time of world upheaval. Action excellent, drama intense, battle sequences great.
EXCELLENT writing!
Just one note there is one section that will strike some as tough to handle, men and women returning from War, beware intense.

Man they a lucky

This was a good series of the first six books. It kept my nose in the book as often as I could be free to read. The small group of characters in the book always got away without being killed. The sub characters were not so lucky. The books really did go into the feeling and psychology of war on a person. I know a lot of vets were on the roof with Marco. I was surprised at the ending as I thought the sixth book was the last in the series. Surprise there are several more to read.

Awesome story

I was entertained by the twist and unexpected turns this series brought me. I believe this collection would appeal to anyone who likes stories of space battles and alien invasions. And probably be appreciated by those seeking a human struggle for survival and the rather messy psychological results of human emotions.
I don't remember reading a book of this length without getting bored until Earthrise.

Earthrise an epic tale of glory and suffering

Loved the characters and the enemies alike. The loss of some of the characters early on was a little disappointing at first but as the story continued it made sense as it shapes the main characters. I found it difficult to put down at times especially during the battles. The loss of one of the main characters was a little predictable a bit like in some films nowadays but it did not spoil the adventure too much.

From the sublime to the ridiculous, I genuinely couldn't finish this.
It started out a story not original but with interesting characters. Descended into mindless jingoistic crap.
Riding a motorbike you can fire a rifle suspended on your back? The blethering nonsense just stretched on and on, very disappointed it could have been worthwhile but the gooey fill between actual writing made my teeth hurt, rubbish a waste of time and money.

Mean Rating: 2.5

Review: The first three novels are pretty good. Yah you slog through the YA hormones, but the aliens/world building are really good. The only downer in the first series is the constant back story which carries through to the final series. A big distraction. How many times do we have to hear about Lailani’s past or Marco’s parents dying? Ten, twenty?

Rating: 3.5/5

The last three novels in the series is mired under the lengthy back story of the crews shared past in battle or their UNDYING LOVE FOR EACHOTHER. This theme also repeats itself over and over. I get it, YAssholes sell books but there is a major hurdle called suspension of belief, especially where fight scenes are drawn. So you can ride a motorcycle while shooting, loading, steering and accelerating at the same time? You can burn rubber on the forest floor? And then this series really goes off script into fantasy land with giant space whales and yup, fuking weeping anthropomorphic Unicorns. Not to mention the all powerful aliens that can morph an entire world but get their asses handed to them. The hidden space ship on a distant moon-planet (with uber smart tree monkeys) has a fifties themed soda stand/ice cream bar with era correct costumes is dues ex at its finest and ultimately, was the final straw in a slew of chances. Fukity fuk this shjt.

We can forgive certain story line hiccups with countered character development, yet when scifi is diminished by the fantasical, enough is enough. Throughout this series there is a lot of borrowing from other works. Starship Troopers by Heinlien, Star Wars wookies/nandakis etc. This may be intentional in tribute as there are direct references to other works. The anachronistic b.s. is deep and wide. Space travel, plasma weapons with tanks that have a hand crank to turn them? There is a painted sexual array of straight and lesbianism back and forthing. It is constant and really tiring. It added nothing to the story line plus who gives a shjt?

Rating: 1.5/5

Earthrise is an exhilarating ride through humanity's darkest hours and brightest hopes. This omnibus collects the first six novels of Daniel Arenson's bestselling series and plunges you into a universe where Earth is devastated by a brutal alien invasion. Billions have died, our cities burn, and the cosmos teems with predators, yet Arenson's ragtag heroes refuse to surrender. The pacing is relentless, the battles epic, and the stakes nothing less than humanity's survival.

What impressed me most was how Arenson balances large‑scale interstellar warfare with intimate character moments. You feel every loss and triumph as Earth's scrappy pilots and soldiers band together to push back against overwhelming odds. The descriptive prose brings starships, alien worlds and dogfights vividly to life, and the tension never lets up. It's reminiscent of classics like Ender's Game and Starship Troopers but with its own unique voice and heart.

If you're looking for a sprawling space opera filled with action, resilience and hope, Earthrise delivers. The six books fly by thanks to Arenson's engaging storytelling, and by the end you'll be cheering for Earth's rise among the stars. Highly recommended for fans of military sci‑fi and anyone who enjoys rooting for underdogs who refuse to quit.

Well, it's your typical galactic warzone story, only once we find out what the cause was at the end of the collection, it seems like this one would have been unavoidable for the humans. But, then we see another threat at the end of this book as well. Nothing like another galactic scale threat to hound the ones that have already fought off two of those. Guess the author is going for things come in threes theme. In any case, it's a decent read, especially if you like galactic war stories. I found it to be ok, but the theme does seem to be a bit overused these days, though I have no issues with the way this one was handled, with the exception of the very end, but that's more a preference of mine vs. preference of the author, so no real complaint there, just a difference of opinion on how it should have ended, considering how things went up to that point.
Ifn any case, don't let me get you confused, if you're a scifi fan, go read it, you'll probably like it.

Too much… yet too little

There was too much repetitive gore and suffering in this series to be enjoyable. Yet there was too little in the way of characters and their development. The same core survive in uncounted and inconceivable scenarios to the point of absurdity. Yet nearly every other character introduced seemed two-dimensional and predictable. I had to struggle to finish. On the plus side, most of the alien creatures envisioned by the author were creative and novel.

A interesting future

The books are a fortelling of possibilities. what happens to us reflects what we do. There is good and evil you just have to look in the right places to find good but where is the right place.
Rich characters, the auther knows human nature and makes them come alive.

Lots of mean aliens

The start reminded me of Starship Troopers with all the bugs. Kept me on the edge of my seat even though it got tedious at times. I hope the rest moves well since there are 9 more books just to finish this part and then it seems to continue in the next set of books.

Should have stopped after the first book

The series evolved into a disgusting repetition of unbelievable battles that the main characters always survive. The writing gets more childish and the characters become more annoying. I can't believe I read all this trash. I only hope that it saves someone from my mistake.

Childish

Started out okay, but after the first two books and into the third they really got childish. Having been through boot camp and military training, I found the author's constant ruminating became irritating. He constantly repeated himself. The fourth book was just plain idiotic, and I quit after five chapters.

The concept was intriguing, and there were parts I thoroughly enjoyed, but overall it felt underdeveloped. The pacing was inconsistent, with a few slow chapters that were hard to get through. Some characters shone, while others felt like afterthoughts. It’s a decent read, but I expected a bit more polish.

Everlasting nightmares,

I liked the stories. The people, quiet, noisy, bossy ,shy and the many more obedient soldiers. They were strong enough to follow into battle. Horrific, terrifying battles.
Exciting space adventures and more battles. A must read. Very well written with many historical similaritys,
