This was a light and easy read with an interesting premise: Gentlemen Courtesans. Many historical romances involve mistresses (either a gentleman falls in love with one, or there is an evil one mad that her former keeper has a new love, etc.), but this is the first book in a series about men who take on female clients. The idea is hatched in the bachelor den of Benedict, the "leader" of the group of misfit, disowned, cut off, and/or strongly frowned upon sons of titled men. After night of unmatched debauchery, this eclectic group of friends brought together by their circumstances realize that their fun is likely to come to a swift end as they are completely out of funds with little hope to acquire more as their fathers have long washed their hands of their antics. Then Benedict comes up with an inspired idea.... what if they could use the "skills" they most enjoy to make money? Certainly there are women of means who want someone to showcase, take to events, and service them privately.... At first, the idea seems ridiculous, but with nothing to lose, the friends decide to go for it and form the very secretive, word-of-mouth referral only Gentlemen Courtesans (GC) service.

Skip ahead to two years later when the business is thriving and one of the GC's is working towards the goal he knows will allow him to live independently and not have to worry about the fact that he was cut completely from his family by edict of his father, the earl, because of his desire to (of all ghastly things!) work for a living. Hugh Radcliff is the 4th son of an earl, and he has always had a passion for art; his dream is to become a portraitist, but he needs to have his work displayed in the summer Exhibition in order to attract members of the beau monde to commission him to render their portraits. Serving as a member of the Gentlemen Courtesans has permitted him to lease a town home for him to live in and establish a space to create his works, and it has given him the means to attend the prestigious art academy where he has caught the eye of one of the most brilliant artists who has decided to mentor him. Though for the last two summers Hugh submitted what he felt was excellent work for consideration to be exhibited, the committee has turned him down on both occasions. Hugh feels that this is his last chance to create something worthy of the Exhibition that will then allow him to make money from his artistic talents and perhaps find the right woman to begin a family of his own, as his family has given him the cut direct across the board since he announced his intention to become an artist. His most recent keeper has decided to marry, so he is available to take on another woman that he knows must be his last as his art will keep him occupied once his work is accepted.

Evelyn Coburn is firmly on the shelf at five and twenty. Her two older sisters had no trouble in conquering the marriage mart with their sparkling personalities and feminine attributes, and both have been settled and happily starting their own families. Evie, however, has always found herself tongue-tied around the opposite sex, and once word got around that she was a dreadful conversationalist, the gentlemen steered clear; thus, she became a wallflower. Her grandfather made arrangements for her and her sisters to have substantial dowries, but if they were not wed by age 25, those dowries went directly to the girls. Evie is now considered an heiress as she has come into those generous funds, and she has decided that while marriage will never happen for her, she would like to taste passion at least once. She refuses to die a virgin. So after hearing about this secretive group of male courtesans from a friend, she decides to shove aside her fears and give it a try.

Benedict feels that Hugh is the perfect match for the shy virginal type as he is patient, romantic, and thoughtful, so he matches them up for the first time at a masquerade. When Evie first spots the man across the way from their assigned meeting place, she instantly knows it must be Hugh, and she is struck by how handsome and suave he is, and is, of course, immediately intimidated. Hugh recognizes the look of a lady ready to flee, and he disarms her with his charm and kindness. After spending a little time with Evie, Hugh finds that he really does like her. As time goes on with their affair, Evie realizes she has fallen in love with the one person she knows can never feel that way for her --- after all, the whole "courtship" and romance is what Hugh provides to all of his women, isn't it? She can't possibly be special to him. Will the wallflower and painfully shy Evie summon up enough courage to tell Hugh that she has fallen for him? Can Hugh find a way to have it all: a life with Evie and a successful art career? Are either of them willing to take such a risk?

Overall, this was a good read as the plot was original ---I have not read about gentlemen "mistresses" (would that make them "misters"?). As the H, Hugh was definitely swoon-worthy (I am not a big fan of the brooding artist type, but he was still pretty dreamy), and Evie was the kind of female MC you find yourself rooting for. Also, I enjoyed the delicious steamy goodness (explicit at times). A fun beach read for sure, and I am looking forward to the stories of the other members of the GC.

Plot --- 4/5
Main Characters --- 4/5
Supporting Cast --- 4/5
Steam Level* --- 4/5
Violence --- none
Language --- f word used pretty liberally
POV --- 3rd

*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild; 2/5 - sensual but nothing descriptive; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere; 4/5 - yes please! ; 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all

I received an advance copy of this book from Booksprout in exchange for my honest review.

Finished this a few nights ago in one reading. This really satisfied my craving for the shy wallflower trope and I absolutely adored the portrait artist hero. I loved the build-up of their first meet at Vauxhall Gardens - you could tell that Victoria Vale had a lot of fun getting creative with the costumes and the romanticism of the carnivalesque atmosphere. I loved The Villain and The Dove by Vale but was bored by one of the books in her Scandalous Ballroom Encounters series so I was pleasantly surprised by the writing style in Portrait of a Lady.

The only downside is, it’s short at 270 or so pages. The story feels very strong but I think Vale could have added more. For one thing, there was more emphasis placed on the hero’s family but we don’t care too much about the heroine’s family. They are seen in one scene and that is that. Another thing is that they are separated by a misunderstanding but I feel like we could have thrown the couple a few more obstacles before we got to their happily ever after. Lol I need some angst!

Even if H was too sweet for me and normally not being fan of the courtesan theme, it was a well-written, nice book.

After several disastrous seasons, Miss Evelyn Coburn has failed to secure a match but she has come into her inheritance. At age 25 it seems she's destined to become a spinster so she decides she wants a taste of passion and seeks out the secretive agency she's heard of which provides the services of male courtesans.

As the fourth son of an earl, the Honourable Mr. Hugh Radcliffe had certain expectations placed upon him. His dreams of becoming an artist didn't jive with those expectations and his entire family disowned him. As a starving artist, he agrees when his friend suggests they go into business as Gentleman Courtesans. He only needs the funds until his work is finally accepted into the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition and he can hopefully start gaining real notoriety and making real money from his art. When that finally happens, Hugh hopes to marry and create a family of his own to fill the void left by the loss of the one he was born into.

Hugh is determined Evelyn will be his last keeper, but soon realizes she is different to the others. Romantic Hugh truly wants to be with her, not just for the money, and she becomes the muse for some of his best art yet. Soon it becomes clear to everyone that both mean more to each other than their arrangement allows for, but with both Hugh and Evelyn more than a little afraid, can they find their way to a permanent future?

I enjoyed this even more than I expected to. I was intrigued by the notion of the male courtesans and it was of course steamy, but also much more romantic and sweet than I'd anticipated. It was just lovely and I look forward to the rest of the series after how much I loved Hugh.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

oh yeah. This series finally made it to KU . and these stories are little gems of steaminess. The Portrait of a lady is the first in the series. spinster Evie and the artist courtesan Hugh first hit it off in vauxhall gardens. The descriptions of the masquerade are so wonderfully vivid and sensual. Hugh is great with his hands and always kind to shy Evie. Cannot wait to finish all the courtesan stories, feels like a slutty three musketeers sometimes 😀

So I typically wouldn't gravitate towards a historical romance in the Regency era but what I do like is books about a woman who falls in love with a gigalo ( or in this case a Cortetesan or a ' kept man'). Funny enough I don't read the other way around stories but the woman being in a position that she is paying a man for sex fascinates me. So does some good Angst with a dash of drama.

Plus this book was free on Amazon ( it was a sale) so I thought I would give it a chance.

Evelyn hires Hugh to come live with her 3 to 4 days during the week plus she pays his rent. She's a virgin and considers herself a spinster at 25. He's an artist at 29 that would rather be a gentleman caller then live off his father's money. He's had a few long term client and is instantly enthralled by Evelyn.

Evelyn doesn't have any unusual expectations but she finds herself falling for High even though she knows they have an expiration date and its his job to make her feel special and loved.

I eouldnt say this book has a lot of drama or over the top spice, nor is there a complicated plot. I did like the story and would recommend it.

They have good chemistry

Many thanks to my friend, Lyn, for putting this series on my radar! I'm so glad that she did, because it is ah-mazing. It is ah-mazing for many reason, as described below, but I would be remiss not to elevate the diversity and the working men AND women. So far we've had female scientists and novelists; how cool is that?

Since I have fairly conventional *cough*vanilla*cough* preferences, I didn't know if this series would work for me. But it so does. The characters are unique and likable, the pairings are intriguing, the sex is spicy. Many client/escort romances that I have read feature significant power imbalances or character traumas that are not adequately resolved, but such elements are not present here. And most importantly, the relationships may form under untraditional circumstances, but they are still traditionally romantic: sweetness, lightness, longing, devotion.

I liked the connection between Evelyn, our shy wallflower determined not to die a virgin, and Hugh, the dashing artist shunned by his aristocratic family. There was some insta-ness, but the characters genuinely respect and support one another, which made their connection believable. The sex was plentiful, close to but not quite erotica levels, and while it slowed things down too much at times, it ultimately moved the story forward.

Looking forward to the rest of the series, but especially Aubrey and Benedict. Check this out, friends, if you're looking for something a bit different but still engaging.

Should I Read in Order?
There is a prequel novella that happens first, Tempting the Bluestocking. I don’t feel like it’s super necessary to read it first, but it’s a pleasant little story. This one feels like the first novel and there’s a lot of ‘set up’ of the characters and courtesan plot point.

Basic Plot
Evelyn doesn’t want to die a virgin. She’s received her inheritance and at 25, is ready to hire a male courtesan to educate her. Hugh has been disowned by his family for his desire to paint. Needing money, he becomes a male courtesan to fund his way until his career can financially sustain him.

Give this book a try if you want:
- Regency time period – 1819
- Mid to late 20s main characters – heroine is 25 and hero is 29
- High steam – this comes in at a full 5, with a few extra scenes that are on the short side
- Artist hero, writer heroine
- Masquerade when they first meet
- No villain or mystery to solve – this is relationship focused
- Wallflower heroine
- A novel a touch on the shorter side (goodreads marks it as 259 pages)

My Thoughts:
I will admit I struggled with this book a bit. I do love the premise of male courtesans. Its just fun and different. But I am always anxious for the main characters to meet and begin getting to know each other/relationship building and with this one I was waiting, and waiting and waaaaaaaaiting. Until 26% which to me was just way too long. I think a lot of this was the set up of the series, the getting to know the main courtesans and how it came about. Still, over a quarter of the book before they talk was just too long for me.

I have been reading this book since the middle of June. I don’t know why I struggled so much with it. I would pick it up and it just didn’t fully capture my interest. I have had some major problems focusing/reading so that’s probably just me. I told myself to finish it this weekend, and once I got back into it I found it enjoyable.

I like that the hero is an artist and the heroine a writer. I liked that it was higher steam, though I will say that for me, it did diminish the sexual tension in the book. Hugh was very sweet and I enjoyed his character overall.

Evelyn was pleasant, but I also felt like I didn’t get to know her as much. I usually adore books that are more focused from the hero’s perspective, but in this one I feel like Evelyn’s character suffered a bit for it. She didn’t have a ton of depth even though we saw her writing her stories and met her family briefly.

Overall I am liking these books. There’s not anything I’m strongly disliking about them. I think I will pick up the next one in the series at some point.

Miss Evelyn Coburn is twenty five & refuses to die a virgin. Upon receiving her inheritance, she decides to investigate rumours of a secret London agency which provides the services of male courtesans. The Honourable Hugh Radcliffe is in dire financial straits after being disowned by his family for pursuing a career as a portraitist. Two years ago after a night of drinking & debauchery Hugh & four friends, who are all in need of funds, decide to go into business to form The Gentleman Courtesans. The arrangement with Evelyn is only supposed to be temporary, and Hugh is determined for her to be his last paramour as he needs to concentrate on his art.
I’ve been looking forward to this new series & it didn't disappoint. I loved the prologue, which beautifully 'set up' the series & was a great introduction to the five friends & their reasons for agreeing to be part of the agency. I’m totally intrigued by Ben & his needs, so no doubt Mistress will keep the anticipation simmering & his story will be the last! A well written engrossing read, which I read in two sittings. The characters were well portrayed & very likeable & believable. I loved Hugh such a caring thoughtful man & so different from the author’s usual heroes. I loved how Evie gained confidence & I loved how she stood up for Hugh to Marcus. This as more of a slow burn as Hugh took his time to seduce Evie, certainly not what she was expecting but what she needed. They complimented each other in so many ways, the road to their HEA was highly entertaining. A lovely series opener & I look forward to the rest of the series

I did wonder if I was going to enjoy this book but once I’d met Evelyn and Hugh, I was hooked. They were such a lovely couple, Evelyn was sweet and shy at first but gradually came to gain confidence in herself and this was due to Hugh. He was so caring and understanding of Evelyn’s sensibilities. They were so ideally suited, two artists of different media. Of course, nothing runs smoothly and this is the case here. This was a most engaging read. I enjoyed the descriptions of Vauxhall and also Hugh’s journey as an artist. Loved the ending.

Let me say to start that I finished the ARC of this book two days ago, and was still trying to figure out what to write about it. Is that bad? Oh for heaven's sake NO. All that means is that I found the book to be different than what I thought would be. Is THAT bad? Oh, stop it. Of course it isn't.

I'm not into male escort stories. I've read a couple of books that revolved around that subject and while they weren't bad, it isn't something I would want to read in a book. So when Victoria Vale began writing this series about Gentlemen Courtesans, I withheld judgment, but wasn't altogether sure I was going to like it (which would have been heartbreaking to me because Ms. Vale's writing style is one that I truly enjoy, no matter whether she is writing Regency Smut or her grocery list).

Well, in the case of this story, I was truly drawn and quartered. The beginning of the first chapter had me convinced that this book was going to be something that might not be "me". Now THAT might have been bad, but then I got to the second chapter and fell in LOVE with Hugh. And then of course, his "keeper" Evelyn, comes on the scene, and I just knew this was going to have me hooked. And it did. My first words when finished with the book were "dammit, she did it to me again!".

The "she" of this review is Victoria Vale (sometimes when she irritates me by always being able to turn my opinion around onto itself, I call her "she who shall not be named"). She wrote a story that I really didn't think I would warm up to because of the subject matter - why in the world would I want to read about a bunch of down and out men who think that practicing the oldest profession on earth will bring them their fortunes on a platter? Heh. By the time I was at the end of the book, I was tempted to write her directly and say ok, I give up, can I crawl up into that brain of yours and poke around for a while, because I really want to know how you took a story line that I would NEVER have warmed up to and turned it into something that I will happily re-read while waiting for Book #2.

The premise works for this book, there's no doubt about it. All of the men you meet in the first chapter of the book are rakes and hellions, all have either spent their considerable fortunes on things that don't put food in their stomachs, OR they've been disowned. And one, who was probably more sober than the rest, comes up with the idea of being male courtesans - and that means finding wealthy women who will pay their rent and their expenses in return for bedding them. But none of these men are going to impress you in the first chapter. Not one single one of them. Just wait...read the first chapter, take a breath, get a cup of tea, curl up, cause Mistress Vale is about to take you on a ride with Hugh and Evelyn that you won't forget for a while. As a writer, she's very good at that.

And more to the point, as a writer, as an AUTHOR, Victoria Vale is among the best at pulling a reader into a story, immersing them in emotions, and taking them along for a ride. If you haven't already figured it out, she is, out of the thousands of self published authors out there, amongst the top 4 that I will automatically turn to when I want to walk into a story and know that I've just made a few new friends. Her characters are that real. Her stories are that well thought out. Of course, if you don't like sex and smut, you should probably stay away, because she writes sex better than most people practice it. (Erm, did I just say that?)

Mistress Vale...once more, I was convinced you could not come up with a story line like this that would keep my interest, and once more I was wrong. You DO realize, that one of these days I'll be right? Just once. But in the meantime, this is one author who'd better go back into her writing cave and start typing on those keys...I'm waiting for Book 2.

My first male courtesan book and I loved it!
Hugh is so charismatic & sweet. He is an artist an a member of the Gentleman Courtesans (GC). A group created to help the gentleman support themselves now that they are cut off from their families in one way or another.
Evelyn is a painfully shy spinster who is looking for a little sexual fun in her life. She is certain that she will remain a spinster but does not want to remain a virgin. So she seeks the help of the GC. She is paired with Hugh and their chemistry is amazing from their first meeting.
They are two broken individuals, but can they find happiness together? Overall this book is such a great read that touches on past hurt, future endeavors, sexual satisfaction, and love. As much as I loved the The Villain series I am loving the start to the GC series even more. It is not as dark as the other series and I can’t wait for more! Get it, you won’t regret it.

Thoroughly enjoyable romance with a unique premise.
The use of painting by the hero as a means by which to give the heroine a confidence boost was wonderfully well done. Intriguing hints at subsequent books and the problems these gentlemen courtesans will face make for a strong series opener.

Review of “Portrait of a lady” by Victoria Vale

Yet again Victoria Vale has published her newest book, the first of five of a new series!! And a scream of “Yeeees!” could be heard go through the the collected readers of Vale’s!! 🤩

This time we meet the “Gentlemen Courtesans” including Aubrey, Dominick, Hugh, David, Nick and Benedict.
This books focus on Evelyn, who is a twenty-five year old unmarried female in London, and with her own inheritance, but with a serious shyness which affects her socially, until she hires Hugh as her lover. Hugh, twenty-nine year, an aspiring portraitist, and student at the Royal Academy of Art, and been thrown out of his family, for said ‘hobby’ and life-style.

From their first meeting during the annual Vauxhall Masquerade, we as readers are left with no doubt that this unlikely pair, is well past ready to fall in love. Hugh and Evelyn starts their arrangement. After much drama, quite a few surprises, some well placed hot scenes which made my toes curl and made me so desperate after my own man and a perfectly romantic ending.
To put it quite simply, Mistress Vale has done it again!! Made a story-line, and characters who you not only understand, but feel are like friends by the end of the book. The ending of the book was to die for 😍❤️🥰 Loved it, and couldn’t put down the book.

Congratulations Mistress Vale for yet again making a masterpiece come to life. And if I had to rate it, then five ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thoroughly enjoyed this book , full of romance and passion, what more could you ask .

The Gentleman Courtesans are here , the new series from Victoria Vale is so good you really don’t want to miss this .

Hugh is an aspiring artist , trying to make his way in the world .
He’s the youngest son of the Earl of Perth , who has disowned him and who has forbidden the rest of the family to contact him .
He’s also a courtesan, after all he has to make money somehow.

Evelyn is his new owner, she’s a spinster heiress , who is intent upon loosing her innocence, taking on Hugh is her solution.

The two are thoughtful, passionate, and loving together.
But when the time comes to move on , how will they deal with separation.

Beautiful, inspiring and emotional. I loved this book , you have to read it and experience it for yourself.

I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

Quite an original premise. I've only read about female courtesans and never about male courtesans.

The hero, Hugh, took up this line of work so he would be able to pursue his dreams of becoming a renowned portraitist. He was adamant that once his painting was displayed at the exhibition (so that he will become famous and received a regular commission), he would stop being a male courtesan. He would also like to settle down and have a family of his own. I'd guess this desire stemmed from the fact that he was banished from his family as his father who happened to be an Earl, did not like the fact that he wanted to become a portraitist. Along came Evelyn, a spinster of 25 years old, who would like to experience passion before she died. She was extremely shy and a wallflower to boot (I love a wallflower heroine!). Little that they know that this business arrangement would turn into so much more.

Well, Ms. Vale is a new-to-me author. I was a bit apprehensive about approaching her works as erotica isn't really my thing, but surprisingly, this book was pretty low on steam (is this even an erotica?). I would consider the steam level as 3 out of 5.

The story had a good flow. I quite like Ms. Vale's writing style. The main characters were likable as well. You could definitely empathize with them. Ms. Vale also featured some other side characters that would be the main character in the next books of the series. This book was quite low on angst considering that male courtesans was the subject matter (angst would be high in my experience from the other books featuring female courtesan, the road to HEA would be filled with obstacles!). The obstacle in this book was about how Hugo and Evelyn perceived themselves (she thought that he was only in it for the money and he was having trouble convincing her otherwise as she overheard him saying otherwise to his friends).

I am definitely interested to read the rest of the series.

Evie is a shy and awkward beauty who goes after what she wants and becomes confident in her sensuality with her own personal make courtesan. He's charming and gentles her into coming out of her shell. I loved every minute of them finally realizing that *gasp* they love each other! But is it over with too soon?! You gotta love a man fighting to prove his worth to the woman he adores!

Evelyn was off the marriage mart. She no longer wanted it, just someone to show her how much pleasure  a physical relationship can bring. There are men of the ton, many  who have no money to live on. Men who know how to please the ladies and they form a group of male courtesans who give the ladies what they need in return for a sum of money. Women have been doing this for years, why not men? Hugh is a handsome artist who has banned from his family. When Hugh and Evelyn meet , there is more to this arrangement than money. There is great chemistry. When Hugh paints a picture for a contest, he has doubts about it. When he paints Evelyn, everything comes together. Will Hugh and Evelyn find happiness together or will outside forces keep them apart? I love the beginning of this series. Can't wait until the next one. I received this book from the author for a honest review and read it voluntarily.

Thank you Victoria Vale for gifting me with this 5 Star ARC!

The Gentleman Courtesans, created by the Honorable and gorgeous Sebastian, along with his four good friends. They are all struggling financially, due to their personal situations. Each decide to become paid courtesans, but discreetly to any woman. Hugh, an artist and wanting to become in demand, and with the money he receives from his assigned lovers he can continue to study.
Evelyn, shy wallflower Evie, is twenty five and has come into her inheritance. She is referred by a friend of the GC, and she is assigned the handsome Hugh Radcliffe, 4th son of an Earl.
Hugh knowing how shy she is decides to meet Evelyn in public. I love their first meeting, I loved the attention to details. She is so shy, but tender Hugh puts her at ease. Their fist date goes well for them.
They decide to meet several times a week, Hugh slowly seduces her and she is opening up more and more to him.. Their attraction is mutual, he uses her as his muse. Everything about Hugh and Evelyn is sweet, beautiful and of course hot steamy love scenes.
I loved this storyline, he cut from his family for wanting to become and artist, Evelyn, fears of being a lonely virgin spinster. The characters in this story, are so helpful and interesting. The narrative, perfect. I really enjoyed Book 1 to the Gentleman Courtesans.
I love happily ever afters, and I enjoyed how much the Honorable Hugh Radcliffe and Evelyn had in common.
I cannot wait for Book Two!

This was enjoyable reading. I liked the premise of Gentlemen courtesans. Males can get away with so much more. A good opener to this series. 4☆

Gentlemen Courtesans🐺🍆⛲ Take the Ton By Storm!
She wants to know what 💕love is.

This is a kind of reverse romance where several broke, rakish gentlemen🐺🍆⛲ form a business and go into secret contracts with wealthy heiresses💃, widows💃, and spinsters💃. In return for sexual favors and being their escort to various functions, the men are supported by the wealthy women for the duration of the contract.

Most of the men are third and fourth sons of nobles, who have lived the debauched high life until their allowance either runs out or is withheld by dear old dad. Now they need 💰money, and working in a true business seems too distasteful!

What a way to make money by getting paid for what they do best!

Evelyn💃💔, a wealthy 25 year old shy wallflower spinster, is secretly told about the men's service and decides she wants to feel what it's like to be with a man before she gets too old! With no prospects for eventual marriage👰, she decides to take a huge chance, and signs a contract for Hugh🐺🍆⛲🎨, a noble's youngest son disowned because he has become an artist🎨.

This ebook was $3.99 on Amazon at The time of this review.
Opinions Expressed here are my own.

What a wonderful, well written and interesting book! The way the debauched young men go about thinking through and deciding to form their company, Gentlemen Courtesans🐺🍆⛲, was great!
Author Vale writes a book within a book, and a portrait of Evelyn💃 inside a painting by the love💕 of her life.....
Absolutely wonderful! This is an Adult romance masterpiece!

★ Great start to the Gentleman Courtesan series ★

—>>> The fourth son of a viscount, Hugh has to find alternative means of financing his dream to become a portraitist as he has been officially disowned by his family. Applying to become a Gentleman Courtesan was quite the success for him, allowing him to pursue his artistic desires. However, these days, that may just include the lovely Evelyn, his latest keeper and muse, who has come to terms with “being on the shelf” at the age of twenty and five and knows that her prospects of finding a husband are quite slim to none. But Evelyn was quite willing to use her inheritance to ensure she could explore her passions and desires before she ends up old and alone, as penning her Gothic romances was not quite enough to satisfy her needs. The prologue sketches out the situation of the original Gentleman Courtesans, which leads up to the first story featuring Hugh and Evelyn.

This was an interesting read for me in that I love period pieces especially from England, Scotland and oh those uber sexy Highlanders. But, this novel is written almost from the male perspective of things, as the main male character is an escort of sorts.

Evelyn refuses to die a spinster, not that she is close to death but man alive it feels more and more like it every day. She learns of an agency that helps “pair” women with men that will take care of their any need. She decides to pursue this avenue and cross one thing off her list, losing her virginity.

Hugh is an artist that is just hoping to make it into the Summer Exhibition with one of his paintings. He has come so close every year but he feels like this is final his shot. When another opportunity arises to “care” for another woman, he accepts but feels like this will be his last customer. He couldn’t imagine just how right he was.

Evelyn and Hugh have a wonderful connection and he is super sweet and patient while tending to her every want and need. They find themselves moving further and further away from a client relationship and into a romantic relationship. Neither wanting to think the other would want that, refusing to see what is right before their eyes.

Both Evelyn and Hugh have somewhat strained family relationships, though Hugh wins that by a mile. His father disowned him upon hearing he wanted to study art. His siblings have little choice but to go along with their father’s wishes and cut Hugh out of their lives. Evelyn has reached her maturity unmarried so she has received her inheritance and the family doesn’t quite understand her desire to remain single. Once the word is out though, that she is dating Hugh, her mother and sister reappear.

A great new perspective putting the man in the position of escort, not one story normally told. I got a new understanding of some of the workings of the era (whether an actual truth or not, my mind’s eye could appreciate it). Seeing Hugh and Evelyn struggle to live their true lives was one I could relate to, and seeing them not recognizing what is right in front of them also rang true. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance reader copy without expectation. 4 ½ stars for my first read.

Beautiful. The passion of Hugh (and Evelyn) vibrates through the story and through our imagination. Wondering if male courtesans can be anything but crass, worry no more. Ms. Vale writes a story that will hug you and warm you with its romance. Love. This story is so beautifully written and Hugh and Evelyn are such likeable characters that their arrangement is really put the back burner in favor of courtship and romance. I loved this story and look forward to more of these wonderful men and their keepers.

I received a complimentary copy from the author.

Victoria Vale has never let me down! Not only do her books enthrall you, but she comes up with new situations for her characters. In this one the heroine decides to hire a male courtesan (new one on me) and finds the perfect man for her needs. They are both awkwardly shy in public, but not in the bedroom. This book sets another high standard for Ms. Vale and I was so engrossed in it that I'm not sure I even went to bed last night. It is definitely a must read!

BRAVO!!! What an amazing start to a new book. Yes, I am that weirdo that loves a book that makes me tear up and my heart feels as broken as the heroine. Evie and Hugh are just so amazing. Uggh when Evie overhears them talking...heart broken (cue tears). But, what a stupendous, amazing beautiful way grand gesture to prove his love. I loved the courtesans, his sister, Patience and Joseph and everything about this first book. It’s such a amazing story. It is my first “male” courtesan book and I wasn’t sure how to feel about it but WOWZA does Victoria Vale write a great story and has such a great idea. I love how it came to be for them and I love each of their personalities. I can’t wait to read the next book!

Oh my... Mistress Vale has managed to sweep me off my feet again! I find her idea of male courtesans secretly operating in late Georgian times very intriguing and I can hardly wait for her to write the rest of the series especially if the other books are going to be just as good as 'The Portrait of a Lady' (which I am sure they will be). The story of Hugh and Evie has all the ingredients of a beautiful love story, it's romantic and passionate and their love scenes are so hot, I had to take a cool shower after reading them! ;) On top of that, Victoria is able to describe Vauxhall Gardens in a way that makes you feel as if you were there admiring the scenery. So, all in all, read this book, you won't regret it!

Steamy Historical

This is the story of Evelyn and the man she hires to be her lover, Hugh. Evelyn is an heiress and has plenty of money, but she is very shy and doesn't go out in society. Hugh is the fourth son of an Earl who has cut him off for wanting to be a professional artist. Evelyn and Hugh eventually have a HEA. I thought the book was fairly steamy and I enjoyed reading it.
