Didn't know this book is also titled as His Penniless Beauty, which I read in 2019 and basically had the same rating & impressions. Good to know I'm consistent.
The GOOD:
Lots of tears from the building angst through the book. From the remembered & current pain of 24yo now-poor h from being cruelly rejected by 32yo wealthy Greek businessman H 4 years ago right after they 1st smexxed, when she went on & on about how they'll now get married & that'll save her doting father from bankruptcy. Very good angst-filled writing & gripping emotional involvement per James' usual. It's likely due to having both H&h's POVs so we really feel their emotions & know their thoughts.
Likable characters. Good character development, with then-20yo pampered & carefree pianist-major h turning into a desperate & defeated hard-working 24yo woman who sacrificed her health & comfort to keep her stroke-disabled father in the best stroke-rehab clinic, even when it meant social humiliation & taking a degrading job like her 1st-time job as an escort to a sleazy man when H saw her again 4 years later. Then-28yo H was open to emotion yet quick to judge & reject h to protect his self-control & money 4 years ago. But 32yo H became less impulsive and more considerate/empathic of others. He's now able to realize & acknowledge his mistakes 4 years ago. Loved how H felt so guilt-stricken once he realized how his misjudgement & quick rejection of her (without giving her any time to respond to his accusations 4 years ago) was a big part of the great trials h went through alone in the last 4 years with her health-ridden father & their financial ruin.
Good epilogue 3yrs later that showed H&h married with a toddler & h preggo again with her father in better health living in their estate. Good romance/pacing/sexual chemistry/sex scenes mostly due to their intense unspoken emotional tension.

20yo h had a BF before H but didn't sleep with him, despite his pressures because she just didn't want to. She was devirginized by H & slept with him only 1x before they separated. She was celibate until they're reunited. Likely due to the major financial & emotional strain she went through with her father. Hinted at that H had casual lovers before h. No mention about his celibacy during their 4-year separation. Only that he focused most of this time over-working.

Oh, the M*E*L*O*D*R*A*M*A
This should have been a better read than it was. It had all the makings for high drama and angsty entertainment. The delivery wasn’t great in this one, though. The MCs spent way too much time on inner monologues, and not enough time interacting. And the reason for all the angst and the separation was kinda lame.
It was fun to have the H discover his discarded love out on the town as a tawdry escort to his lecherous acquaintance and living in squalor. I liked how the truth about the h unfolds and the H really feels the horror of the consequences of his actions. 😈 That’s always a good time. 🤷🏼♀️
Bottom Line? This was an entertaining drama-filled read, but it was missing the magic ending that I was expecting from this author. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

“He really, really was just shiveringly fantastic!”
He gorgeous. He’s so gorgeous. He’s gorgeous. He’s the most gorgeous. He’s utterly gorgeous. He’s extremely gorgeous.
The elaboration on what the h thinks of how gorgeous he looks, took about 30 pages. At least it felt like 30 pages. And it became annoying.
There was too much thinking and too little action throughout the book. Pages full of her thoughts and then pages full of his thoughts.
But it was okay.
