Albert Mohler guides groups through the second half of the book of Acts, showing how the missionary journeys of Paul, and his arrest, trials, and journey to Rome shape our lives and witness today.
Features close attention to the text, a focus on real-life application, and questions that really open up discussion. Plus a comprehensive guide for leaders in the back.
Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr. serves as president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary - the flagship school of the Southern Baptist Convention and one of the largest seminaries in the world.
Dr. Mohler has been recognized by such influential publications as Time and Christianity Today as a leader among American evangelicals. In fact, Time.com called him the “reigning intellectual of the evangelical movement in the U.S.”
In addition to his presidential duties, Dr. Mohler hosts two programs: “The Briefing,” a daily analysis of news and events from a Christian worldview; and “Thinking in Public,” a series of conversations with the day’s leading thinkers. He also writes a popular blog and a regular commentary on moral, cultural and theological issues. All of these can be accessed through Dr. Mohler’s website, www.AlbertMohler.com. Called “an articulate voice for conservative Christianity at large” by The Chicago Tribune, Dr. Mohler’s mission is to address contemporary issues from a consistent and explicit Christian worldview.
At the start of the new year, I find myself setting goals and dreaming big for how I can improve my life and impact the world. After reading Acts 13-28 For You, I am strengthened to see how I must align myself with God’s goal of spreading the gospel and dreaming big for how the gospel must affect my life and how it will impact the world.
God’s Word For You
God’s Word For You is a series of books by The Good Book Company that seeks to take you to the heart of a book of the Bible and apply its truth to your heart. They attempt to be Bible-centered, Christ-glorifying, relevantly applied, and easily readable. I found this to be especially true of Acts 13-28 For You.
This volume was written by Dr. Albert Mohler. He is the President of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, a council member of The Gospel Coalition, and a prolific author. These roles make him the perfect fit as the author of this book, as he champions the spread of the Gospel throughout all of the world.
What I appreciate most about this book series is the number of resources it has to offer. While it acts as a commentary, it can also be read as a devotional. Each section concludes with questions for reflection. These are usually personal application questions that are perfect for a small group study or Sunday School class.
All-In-One Resource
At just around 200 pages, this book can be easily read in a short amount of time. However, I believe it is best proven by a slow read with your Bible in hand. The book presents as a beautiful blue hardcover edition that looks handsome at home on a desk, but it is compact and durable enough to take for study on the road.
The apostle Paul plays a prominent role in this book, and it is clear that Mohler knows him well. Mohler also stresses the fact that persecution will come to faithful proclaimers of the Gospel. There is a glossary at the back of the book with words that are specifically related to the book of Acts. These terms include Apostle, Evangelist, Inerrancy, and Missiological.
What Mohler uniquely excels at is helping us to understand the different contexts for the Jewish and Gentile characters, as well as the religious leaders such as the Pharisees. The power of the Gospel is on full display in the lives of these people, and Mohler presents it matter-of-factly while helping us to understand the awesome work that God was doing.
The Book of Acts for Me
The days of the early church was an exciting time. But what this book makes clear to me is that the same Spirit that moved back then is the same Spirit that moves today. Our mission continues. And I hope to play my part in the work of the Gospel in 2020 and beyond.
I was provided a complimentary copy of Acts 13-28 For You in exchange for an honest review.
A extremely good read and look into the growth and spread of the early Church by God through the suffering of his chosen missionaries. Well written and explained.
Very helpful. The organization of the material follows the content. The short chapters make it easy to fit reading into my morning routine. I would have liked a fuller summary at the end, but still would recommend this book & series.
Some good parts, but others where we simply said what was already in the text with not a lot of application or actual commentary. I like this series, but this one was one of the weaker ones.
Great resource to read alongside a study of these passages. It was not cumbersome to read at all and provided helpful application thoughts and questions.
Clear and with many encouragements for the church today. I'd have liked a bit more in terms of illustrations and applications, but still a helpful guide.
