City of Crows #2

Shade Chaser

Rate this book
A wizard, a werewolf, and a watchmaker walk into a bar...and don't come out alive.

Two months after the infamous Etruscan Incident, it's back to normal for DSI—as normal as life can be when you hunt monsters on a salary. The rest of Nick Riker's elite team has finally returned from France. Cooper Lee has healed from his nightmare trip to the Eververse. The remnants of the battles with Charun and Tuchulcha have been swept under the rug. And the exploding boathouse in Holden Park has (almost) been rebuilt.

All is calm in Aurora, Michigan.

Until a grisly triple murder in one of the city's most popular bars destroys the delicate balance between three powerful forces. A high-ranking werewolf, a seasoned wizard, and a former mayor turned watchmaker wind up in body bags, and their deaths pit the ICM, DSI, and Aurora's Wolf community against each other in a blame game of epic proportions. And as the accusations spiral out of control, threatening a supernatural war on Aurora's streets, it's up to Riker's team to keep the peace before blood stains the sidewalks.

Meanwhile, Cal is struggling to overcome the consequences of his trip to the Etruscan Underworld. Haunted by visions of the future in the form of disorienting déjà vu, he's terrified he'll fail his team at crucial moments. But with the threat of violent riots hanging in the air, Cal has no choice but to power through and pray for the best.

Because one misstep on this case could mean the downfall of the city he loves.

Full Review:
*I received an ecopy of this book via NetGalley. This has in no way influenced my review.*

It seems like there's a lot of urban fantasy out there with male protagonists who are snarky and gritty and rough. Their favorite pastimes are drinking and gambling and smoking. They ain't got no time or desire for romance or friendship. They're always running around with machetes strapped to their thighs and their guns ablazin'. What I love so much about this series though is that it's pure urban fantasy with a fun, snarky male protagonist, but he's not quite so rough around the edges---he's real and relatable. He's a normal person, like you and me, he has struggles and emotions, but he just so happens to fight supernatural creatures for a living. And those fights with supernatural creatures do affect him mentally, just like they would any normal person. And even though he may not be ready to settle down into serious commitment, he's not a misanthrope either and has people in his life he cares about and has relationships with.

But I gotta say, even though another one of the things I like about this series is the way the author doesn't avoid the blood and gore, for once I'm actually glad an author didn't go into all the gritty and gruesome details and instead skipped over some parts because I don't think I could've handled some of what happened in this book. It was... wow. Awful. Torture. Legitimate, actual torture. Cal was still cracking the occasional joke in his mind because that was how he coped, but I couldn't laugh until it was over. The poor guy already had PTSD and panic attacks and nightmares from all his previous trauma, so that definitely didn't help. I actually shed a tear a few times just imagining how horrible it must have been and must still be for Cal, like when he told the story to everyone and when Desmond, Ella, and Cooper told him how worried they had been.

Once again though, even though all the horrific details weren't present, Cal's (and everyone's) injuries were still realistic; he felt exhausted and sore, he needed time to heal, etc., and I loved that because that is something so many books are lacking. Including realistic injuries goes a long way in making the whole book feel so much more realistic.

I also liked how everyone mattered, at least to Cal (and the author, I suppose). For example, someone died who Cal didn't know, he was just on a scouting team or something, but he had a name, and Cal made sure to learn and mention his name.

Anyway, once I got into this story, I didn't want to stop reading. The plot was gripping, I wanted to know what would happen to Cal and if he'd be ok and how he'd handle things, and it was just overall another great, action-packed book in the series. It even had a bit more emotion and really touching friendships among the team members, and Cal was just as real and likeable as he was in the first book. I'm definitely looking forward to the next!

Recommended For:
Fans of Book 1 in Clara Coulson's City of Crows Series. Anyone who likes action-packed urban fantasy, supernatural creatures, a hilariously snarky but also realistic and compassionate protag, and touching friendships/team dynamics.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy:

SHADE CHASER was a rare type of book, where the police work and procedures felt real, despite the supernatural nature of the cases they are investigating. There was paperwork, there was calling for backup when necessary and there were life-altering injuries to important characters.

This is the second book of the series, and although I had questions about the events of the first book, I never felt too confused to not be interested by the current investigation. There has been a dramatic triple murder in the basement of a well-loved pub, and not only are the three men prominent figures in their field, the event has the potential to start a magical civil war, in a world where most people do not know about magic.

The Crows (or Kooks, as the regular police force calls them) are mostly human, some of which have a few tricks up their sleeve. Cal, the main character, has a bit of magic detection, and a nearly killer case of deja vu. They also carry charged magical rings that can shock or burn their supernatural enemies. Even when faced with more powerful werewolves, wizards and witches, they hold their own and have each other’s back.

There is a big threat to the world than the evil that the Crows are having to deal with in SHADE CHASER, and it’s coming sooner than later. The writing was quick and excellent, with incredibly catchy first sentences to each chapter that drew me in and sometimes earned a chuckle. Seriously, who can resist an opening line like this one: “Everything is going according to plan—until the building explodes.” A must read if you love urban fantasy with a police procedural twist.

It took slightly longer for me to finish this, but not because the book was less exciting compared to book #1. Let's just say my mood was gearing towards romance and/or I wanted to marathon some TV episodes.

Anyway, I thought this was good! Cal Kinsey, the baby in Riker's elite team shows that there's more than meets the eyes. He may be the youngest, but boy, the way that he holds on during the kidnapped/tortured moments! I am very proud of him.

Although I admit that with all his injuries, he still able to do things he does... I wonder if Cal has some sort of inhuman abilities in him :p. In fact, I wonder if ALL of the DSI team actually not 100% human! It seems like they have power of their own.

To recap a couple of things ... and this is all important spoilers, which is why I put it behind a tag...

On another note, I like Erica, I really do. She's a kick-ass witch. But can we have Cal dates Cooper instead in the future book *lol*. I can't help it, my romantic M/M heart prefer Cal with Cooper.

Didn't like this as much as the first book, has the same writing flaws as the first; first person, present tense (which can work but rarely a favourite) blocky dialogue and a few odd choices. It's also, like the first book action packed with plenty going on and interesting characters.

The injuries got a trifle ridiculous, I mean I thought that Sookie girl took some punishment. Why have a fracture when it could be a compound fracture, every break should have visible bone; in fact once plastered break it again. If you haven't got at least one broken rib you've not earned your place in this book! And make sure you go for a full hilt cross-country run for warm up. It was too much and caused some eye-rolling.

It's clear Calvin is something special, but several characters show incredible strength; carrying people, throwing people, it beggared belief. Even for the highly trained. Some of the magical powers were also suddenly off the scale to an extent unexplained.

Would like to see some down time, have a chance to get more to grips with the characters. There was far less detecting in this book, more a series fo being thrown into danger then a big ta-da showdown.

Feel this series is good, but could be great.
Going to give the next book a try and will see from there.

I really liked the first book even while it was my first book since years without a M/M couple the world building was captivating enough working through a rarely (if ever) used mythology. The MC although with a heavy hero complex failed, came to grief often enough and knew he can't conquer everything on his own. Of course I liked his snark and sometime sass.

Here now ... while I still enjoyed the tale it was too much hero, too much self-blaming, too much stand-up-and-fight-again and handling of his own injuries were borderline ridiculous and honestly I was a bit annoyed about his attitude regarding Cooper. I really would have liked to see those two get together in time but now I can't see that coming anymore. Pity because although he's bi we only see him with his female fuck buddy (her words, not mine).

So I still enjoy the world building, the strong female characters and the action i got a bit wary about the direction of this series ... but it's only the 2nd book and I still have hope that Cal won't turn into a complete douche.

2.5 again.
Gave the second one a shot, to see if the author did any better. Dialogue is still stilted and generic, and every character still sounds just like the other. Not the greatest amount of emotional intelligence in it either. So far as even when the character has his internal dialogue and thoughts, you're still not entirely sure what he's feeling and how deep, except pertaining to the situation he's stuck in at that moment.
Maybe it's just not the genre for that I guess. Seems like the author wants to focus on the story, the action, the intrigue, and the mystery.
It's fun. It's interesting
Made me move on to the 3rd.

[Edit]

Changing to 3 stars. More interesting the second time around, once you get used to the speech pattern. Also, cuz it gets super betterz later. Wow I'm tired.

These are fast paced, action oriented stories. Easy reading and enjoyable. He does get a bit detailed in the gory elements for my taste, but easy enough to skim and with his fast pace, the story doesn't slow and fester in the gore moments. I'll read the third book.

*warning this book is not for the squeamish. It has graphic violence with thorough descriptions including torture.

*this book might require a little higher suspension of belief - especially with what a human body can repeatedly endure and the sheer # of life saving last minute breaks. For me it was done well enough, it did not hamper my enjoyment. But it did start pushing at my limits, and I can suspend a large amount belief.

So... As i mentioned previously with the first book, this series was very different than what I initially expected. I was not even sure how I ended up with the 1st book. I usually like a little romance / coupling in my reads, and that is always m/m. This has continued references to an ongoing "friends with benefits" relationship that is m/f. It continues to move the plot along, so I had no problems with it.
The blurb was not at all misleading, so I was probably rushing or making assumptions etc... I enjoyed the first one enough that I purposely purchased the 2nd. I was hoping for the same fast paced gripping story, and I was not disappointed.

I do kind of still miss the couple aspect, but there was a lot of relationship building with the team. I must admit, since he mentioned in the 1st book he was bisexual, I did have hopes for a possible budding romance with a sweet archivist. But at least in this book, there was no coupling of any kind.

The supporting characters continue to develop and are interesting. Each bring something special to the team. The world building remains clear with some unique twists and detailed. The plot was interesting and held my attention. There were a few minor things that snagged at the flow like editing or unclear timeliness, but nothing too major. I was thrown out of the book at least once at the end where at first Cal is blocked from escape then suddenly a few scenes later he is able to sprint free. (I did not go back to double check if I missed something or if it was an actual error). There were a couple of scenes that dragged on a little much fire me, but nothing to drop it down to 3 stars or anything like that. It was still groping and interesting.

The author did very well at wrapping this story's arc, but continued to move the series arc along for the following books. I will read the next one, and see how it goes.

Brilliant and Engrossing Plot set in a Paranormal World

This series just gets better and better. After the first book in this series established the characters and built the world they inhabit this book was set free to draw the reader with pure intriguing plot.

Cal, is still very much a rookie in a complicated and dangerous world. He still makes mistakes, sometimes big ones, but he learns from each mistake.

One of this things I love about this series is that the hero isn’t some all powerful being who keeps getting powers to solve all the problems laid out before him, like a lot of Urban Fantasy books do. Cal is actually one of the least powerful and accomplished people in the book, but that is what keeps him interesting. He is involved intimately in the case but it is up to other people to solve the problems.

Erica the witch, is very powerful and involved with the DSI because of her strong belief that the DSI do important work. Her involvement is undercover, hidden by her friends with benefits arrangement with Cal.

Ella is a senior team member who is incredibly skilled at hand to hand combat and experienced in the DSI.

Cooper is a very intelligent and sensitive young man. He works in archives and his memory and intellect are often key in solving cases. Cooper believes that Cal is a hero after his rescue of Cooper in the previous books. I love Cooper, he is so hard working, caring and brave despite his terror. He is loyal to a fault.

Riker, the team leader, is tough and experienced, but also damaged by the loss of his partner, who is replaced by Cal. He was severely injured in the incident that lost him his partner. He holds the team together with force of personality. He is another fascinating character.

Basically I could list everyone in these books and spent time detailing why they are so fascinating, which gives a very clear explanation of why this series is so good. All the characters are fascinating, even the less prominent ones. This is such a well fleshed out story with great plot and fantastic characters.

I’m looking forward to reading the next one!

Calvin Kinsey joined the DSI (Dept of Supernatural Investigations) after witnessing the death of his partner as a rookie with the Aurora PD. A newbie agent, he is still recovering from events in book 1, when his team is called in to investigate a seemingly mundane murder in an office building under construction. True to form, a routine stop ends in flaming dragons and excessive property damage. It REALLY wasn't his fault this time.

A few weeks later, they are called in to investigate a triple homicide (werewolf, wizard and ex-mayor). The trio are dispatched with a spectacular amount of bloodshed. I'll admit that there is very little investigation involved, but we do get to see some old friends from book 1: Erica (a brilliant magic practitioner--who I think is only using Calvin for his body), Cooper Lee (nerd extraordinaire), Ella Dean (Cal's self-appointed mentor) and Riker (team lead). Also, despite his best efforts, Calvin continues to find himself in humorous, compromising and downright dangerous situations at every turn. He really needs a body guard.

Book 2 is just as good as the first. Clara Coulson finds a good balance between humor and pathos as Calvin navigates yet another situation for which he is woefully underprepared. He never even gets to blow up any beggar rings. It's also refreshing to see strong female characters who are unapologetically competent and not pining away for prince charming. A fun, satisfying read.

I pretty much knew that Shade Chaser would be a great read. I’ve yet to encounter something by Clara Coulson that I haven’t liked. Part police procedural, part supernatural, and all urban fantasy, Coulson delivers an engaging read with a rookie protagonist who actually learns from past mistakes. Unlike Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum, who makes the same mistakes over and over, our favorite “hot crow” makes all new mistakes. We want Cal to win the girl, defeat the supernatural, and prove his mettle within a team of grizzled veterans.

I enjoyed the subtle politicking in this book. I don’t know that the author specifically was commenting on our world, but in Aurora, Michigan, the specter of politics threatens to derail the fragile balance of the various factions. Accusations and the blame game mirror current (as of the book writing) events and scandals.

Of all the characters in the City of Crows, Erica is by far my favorite, and I hope we get to see more Erica/Cal action in future books. Like it’s predecessor, Soul Breaker, I’m rating Shade Chaser four out of five stars for a great urban fantasy read. I look forward to reading more books in the series.

Once again, our hero, Calvin Kinsey, finds himself in hot water. This time, he finds himself occasionally disabled by flashes of deja vu, which hit him at random times and distract him from whatever he’s doing, like driving down the road. He doesn’t want anyone to know how bad the flashes are.

A triple murder in the basement of a local eatery leads the team to the home of the former mayor of the city. What they find is clocks- lots of clocks. Cal has a deja vu moment that leads him to the basement of the house, and into a heavily warded room that explodes when he enters, and sets free hundreds of shades that were trapped in the clocks. This leads them to a huge conspiracy, one they must solve quickly, before whatever was supposed to happen, happens.

Cal is kidnapped during a fracas in the street with werewolves, and what follows is horrific. Not for the faint of heart.

Shades is, as Soul Breaker, well, written. Nearly flawless, with a couple of solitary errors, and one tiny grammatical error (the I/me conundrum again). I’m frankly surprised she made it. Still, the book is 5 out of 5 stars.

So most of the time, when I start to read a book I finish it in 24 hours. This is one of those books that I felt like I consumed rather than read.
The pace was faster, although with no less background on legends and mythology, than the first book. I'll admit that I missed some the research focus from Soul Breaker but that could be because I adore Cooper so much (and man, I really hope he and Cal end up together eventually. Nothing against Erica but...). I do think the bi-sexuality part of it was less in your face but it seemed like there were more implicit thoughts that way than stating it. I actually find it refreshing that Cal's sexuality is no more of an important part of him that it really should be so I'm not complaining but everything happened so fast there wasn't really time to expand on his intimate relationships but it was a decent trade off as we got to know more about his co-workers, including some spiffy new ones!

I’m probably breaking some sort of reviewers’ guild rule by plugging another book, but I really loved Clara Coulson’s Soul Breaker, the first book in her City of Crows series. It was so great that I’ve been salivating for book 2 in the series. Well now it’s here and let me tell you, Shade Chaser (City of Crows Book 2) was definitely worth the wait. I love Cal. I love Ella, Amy and Cooper. Really, I just love following along with Nick Riker's elite team. I just love these books. Great writing, plotting and casting. How could I do anything else but love it? But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

3.5 stars. Another solid book, basically on the same level as the first one I think. I enjoyed Cal being more incorporated into the team and knowing the others better but still obviously being a new guy. I was also very into the build-up that appeared to be occurring between Cal and Cooper, with Cooper hero-worshipping Cal a bit and their friendship and Cooper looking after him and them starting to flirt a little and idk, they were just cute and good. I also really enjoyed the dynamic between Erica and Cal even though I didn't ship them. The plots of the series so far haven't been like overly fascinating or gripping but were still enjoyable enough, and I like the characters enough for it to be worth it.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

I highly recommend you read the first book in this series before reading this book. Not only does it give you the background and setup you need to truly appreciate this story, but it's a great story.

There isn't a lot I can say about the plot that won't give away a ton of spoilers, but I will say it's a whirlwind story. I love Cal's voice in telling this story, there is a right mix of snark and bluntness that really help the story flow. I liked getting to see bits of Cooper and Erika again (they don't overwhelm the story, but they also aren't just window dressing). I liked getting to see the members of Cal's team (it's clear why they are the elite team).

I can't wait to read the next story!

This is the second story in the City of Crows series. It picks up shortly after the events of the first book. Events from the first book also continue to having lasting effects on Cal. The storyline at a high level was essentially the same - Cal and team find themselves trying to solve grisly murders that involve members of their supernatural community. This provides good opportunity to build on the world a bit more than the first book. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish this one because I was still unable to connect to the main character. I had this issue with the first book and was hoping it would improve, but found that was not the case. Because of this, I will not be able to continue with this series.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

Cal and the Crows start another action packed mystery. Dead bodies and crime scenes start popping up left and right. The major supernatural players on Earth: Practitioners, Werewolves, and Vampires appear to be paying underhanded games in the unsuspecting city of Aurora. Cal finds himself in the middle of another case involving the Eververse. When creatures of the Eververse come to Earth nothing good happens. Cal and the Crows with some unlikely help must figure out the puzzle left for them before disaster strikes the city again.

This is a really good read that I absolutely enjoyed and devoured!
Though this is book 2 in the series, and I haven't read book 1, I had no trouble picking up the story and following this action filled book. The characters are well rounded and fleshed out beautifully and the world created by this author is easy to envision. The storyline moves along quite quickly with plenty of action to keep you glued to the pages.

Addictive, fresh with just the right amount of natural humour

From the start of the series it was a case of turn page turn page read a bit more. Yes the damage a human body can withstand is stretched to breaking point but you don’t mind. The real characterisation of the principal figures grow so fast they become your friend. You cannot take the story seriously but it is addictive you have to buy the next in the series - enjoy!

With a full team and Cal's teeth cut into the supernatural world of policing you'd think things would quieten down right? Nope :-) Things are happening in the city and the supernatural appear to be getting bolder. With Cal suffering side effects from his trip to the Eververse, Cal does not feel at his best. But the team is around him and they are ready to use any advantage they can get. With exploding action and far reaching consequences these books keep getting better and better.

I recommend reading book 1 first to get the full background and because it is an awesome read. That being said Book 2 did not disappoint. The characters are in depth and the world the author created is on point. I am excited to see where book 3 takes the story

So much fun!!

I am loving this series, especially Cal's ability to see the bigger picture in the midst of all of the distractions that are thrown at him. I like how the team is really showing him that he is a valuable member, and I can't wait to see what comes next!

Book two in the series and as good as if not better than the first. This author certainly knows how to write a good supernatural book. Cal knows how to get himself into scrapes that’s for sure. Roll on next one. Highly recommended.

Again, like the first book, this is a lot of fun. This one wasn't quite as satisfying as the first, it seemed to get to a conclusion faster and left a hanging chad at the end. LOL! BUT still, a lot of fun to read. Quick, fun, and enjoyable.
