City of Crows #3

Wraith Hunter

Rate this book
It’s another bright and sunny day in Aurora, Michigan…when a mysterious building collapse kills sixty-seven people.

It's been four months since the devastating battle on Primrose Avenue, and DSI still has its hands full. The local ICM chapter is now unstable, no leader to corral its members. The werewolves are moving in strange ways, like they're keeping secrets. And there's a traitor inside DSI, waiting to strike again.

Cal Kinsey and his team, now back on the job, are desperately searching for the answers they need to restore balance in the supernatural community. But so far, they've had little success.

Then, to make matters exponentially worse, a major Aurora convention center collapses without warning, killing dozens and injuring hundreds more. With all signs pointing to a supernatural terrorist attack, Cal and his team are thrust back into the danger zone once again. And this time, they're playing for keeps.

Because according to the riddle-filled letter that arrives on DSI’s doorstep, addressed to one Captain Nicholas Riker...the destruction of Aurora is only just beginning.

Review:
*I received an ecopy of this book from the author. This has not influenced my review.*

These books are just so readable. They’re action-packed and perfectly paced, and once I pick one up, I don’t want to put it down until I’ve finished. And even then, I just want more!

Cal was yet again great too. He’s one of my favorite protagonists because he’s so not the stereotypical male lead you often see in urban fantasy. He’s realistic and sarcastic and vulnerable and compassionate and respectful and dealing with PTSD and sometimes overwhelmed but still badass. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him quite so badass though as when he evacuated that building, which is odd considering I’ve seen him take on countless monsters and gods and supernaturals. But this poor guy can’t manage to go even one book without ending up in a hospital.

He’s not the only great character though. I love Cooper and his feistiness. And actually, for someone who’s an archivist and doesn’t even work out in the field, Cooper sure gets in a lot of trouble too. The rest of Cal’s team is also great. I even liked the new character, Lucian, though I can understand why Cal hates him.

Also, I gotta say, I find it really entertaining that the villain who created the wraiths not only stole and reanimated a whole bunch of corpses but then also dressed them up in cloaks and gave them all scythes. That’s commitment. That’s a villain with style.

I also like how the author always keeps the horrible things that happen suitably horrible and serious and full of emotional impact rather than glossing over them. Especially with everything happening in the real world right now, I appreciate that she gave the incidents in the book the weight that they deserved.

The only thing I didn’t like was the one or two sentence chapter openings that referenced something later in the chapter, like Cal had already experienced everything and knew what was going to happen. They were confusing and threw me out of the story, especially since the POV is first person present. But that was a minor thing.

There’s one other thing I want to talk about because I’m excited… but I’ll save that for the next review so that I won’t spoil anything!

Overall, this was another gripping, action-packed book in the series, and I can’t wait to read more about Cal and his team!

Fans of Books 1 and 2 in Clara Coulson's City of Crows Series. Anyone who likes action-packed urban fantasy, supernatural creatures, a hilariously snarky but also realistic and compassionate protag, and touching friendships/team dynamics.

I feel like these books are giving one step forward and two steps back, each time!! But then again, it's only book #3 and apparently the author is planning FIFTEEN books in this series, so I have to be patient in waiting for significant conclusions to each of the problem that the Aurora DSI team is facing. Okay, now onto spoiler-y things...

On another note, I have settled with the fact that DSI elite team doesn't necessarily mean they're good in investigation *lol*. Instead they're the action heroes, the ones who fight with almost supernatural abilities, despite that they are human. I mean, Cal has probably got all of his bones broken by this book. Except for his skull *grin*

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy.

WRAITH HUNTER is completely charming, walking the line between intense fight scenes and witty one-liners. Cal Kinsey is both self-deprecating and ambitious. He wants to be a key member of the DSI team, but PTSD has him second-guessing and acting rashly. A full night’s rest would help his thinking, but there’s always another bomb, another kidnapping, another vampire that takes up his attention. It gets to the point that every diversion puts you on edge because these characters need to sleep dammit.

There are no pulled-punches in the novel. Characters are hurt and they feel it. That split knuckle? Yeah, they’re gonna feel it next time they punch someone. Cal isn’t the hero of his own story. He wants to be, but there’s so many badasses on his team that it’s hard to stand out. Sure, he can take down a couple perps but there’s always an awesome blade master that’ll take down 10 more to help Cal out. The DSI team runs like a well-oiled machine, even though Cal might agonize over being a burden.

I hadn’t read the previous books but I never felt overwhelmed. However, knowing the events of the previous novels would definitely help understand the importance of the plot twists. WRAITH HUNTER seems to tie up loose ends from the previous two novels and also set up the next. There are new players that are sure to cause havoc in the future. Even better, a new romance heats up between Cal and a team member. The romance starts so slowly and sweetly that by the end of the novel I literally squee’d. WRAITH HUNTER is a perfect procedural. The crime scenes matter, the victims matter, and the evidence matters. Even better, WRAITH HUNTER stresses that being a member of a team is more fun than going rogue.

Genre: Mystery and Thrillers, sci-fi and Fantasy

This is turning out to be a cracking series, seems to be full of drama, action, puzzles, danger and each day seems to bring Cal and the crew into more of it. It's not quite like that though, when this story opens its some months after that action of the last book, the gang have taken time to heal from the incredible injuries they incurred back then and that's as it should be.
When a book is day after day of non stop action it makes me think" who dealt with all this before?” and “who will do xyz when this gang are gone?"
Spaced out over time feels much more fluid and natural than the one-drama-on-top-of-another story lines too many books have.

The last two books have proved to be openers for more action, and I love that the vampire who was the catalyst for Cal joining the DSI is in this book, and of course wonder about him and his actions. Are they as cut and dried as they seemed? Or is he just as much a victim of circumstance. Or maybe its just his job, that's going to make him p iss off a lot of people, maybe it is all about the money for him. Who knows? He's an intriguing character and I want to read more of him.

I love Cal, he's a great lead, talented and yet flawed too, he knows he doesn't have all the answers, knows his limitations but throws himself in wholeheartedly when he believes its needed regardless of the cost to himself.
Erica, oh I hated that bit, what she needed to do, and why she felt she had no alternative. fingers crossed that all works out well.
Cooper - a surprise there? Or not, maybe its another red herring - though book one made me wonder if that might happen. I love storylines that make me wonder what if, and how come, and maybe this will....you know the sort, where you get so involved with characters you think of them as real.
The rest of the gang are there, with a few new guys ( and ladies) joining in and it was great seeing them all again. Like meeting old friends, and making new ones.

Its a fabulous read once more, things to puzzle out, drama and action, dangers, and speaking of which, those elevating zombies - what fun they were. The sly humour that had them dressed up in long coats and carrying scythes.
Its little touches like that which lift this novel up, give some levity to the dark dramas surrounding some of the main plots. There are other little touches worked in too, moments of humour, things that make these characters feel real. We all crack jokes at inappropriate times, that's the kind of human way of dealing with stress and fright and it works so well here. Thats what separate a good book from the crowd, the little extras that keep us reading.

The plots in this part wrap up well, but open up the wider one that's been building, and I really want to read more right now!!

Stars: five, another rivetting instalment, whetting my appitite for more. I know when this series is ended its going to be one I reread right through, in a back-to-back reading fest. I love to read series like that, get fully immersed in another world.

More like the first one, a more satisfying read than the prevous. Lots of action, Calvin still the 'baby' of the team not showing any signs of becoming part of the team and always the first to land in danger.

While there's strategy meetings and discussion there's little evidence of actual detecting too often the team appear led to the solution and to rely on fighting skills and Cal's remembered lesson facts. Would be nice to see one of the older more experienced team members offer a solution beyond weaponry. It is however very nice to see so many kick-arse women in a story.

Injuries continue to be collected.
A new character proves interesting.

Cooper Lee continues to win the prize, a likeable character that needs more page time. His confidence is building and with it some sass.
Erica shows great strength, hope we see more of her.

There's flaws but I'm a fan of 'no-brainer' action films, this is all the blood and explosions with a rush of drama, sparks of personality around the edges but little emotional impact. An interesting world and fun read.

When a convention centre collapses after an explosion, all signs point to terrorism, and all police of any description are drafted in to help. But the Crows notice magic traces that suggest the blast was a magic attack, and four werewolves were at the epicentre, and they’re dead. It’s gotta be pretty dire to kill werewolves outright.
“And for god’s sake, do not, under any circumstances, take off your masks until you are outside the specified danger radius and have been through the initial decontamination procedure. We have no idea what kinds of particulates are in the air right now, and we’re not taking any chances with your health. You all know what happened to the 9…”
I can almost hear the man bite his tongue through the com feed. But he doesn’t need to finish that sentence. Because he’s right. We all know what happened to the 9/11 first responders.
Never forget.

Ah, but America did forget and shafted them on the medical bills.

Cal and co are getting battered and bruised every title, and recovering more slowly it seems. Cal is getting a handle on his deja vu ‘gift’ - it is working as a very cool way for him to notice extra things. [takes note: neat writing tool]
Whoever is doing this has sent a booby trapped card to Riker; riddler-like and that is bonus for the team. If its personal, they have less possibilities.
Cal finds out who leaves the sticky note clues on his door - and it is the literal last person he would want.

This one felt like a step up. There is a bigger story arc now. Magic users are policed by ICM worldwide and they have treaties with Vampires throughout Europe, but in America a splinter magic group has formed and they are terrified of the vampires. They call themselves Methuselah Group and have aligned with werewolves like the crazy ones that tortured Cal. They are also swallowing every single rumour and conspiracy theory. Think magic user FB. But they are ‘fighting back’ and THAT is getting a lot of innocent bystanders killed.
The new ICM leader in town is a mind reamer, and that terrifies Erica so much she does something that may not be fixable to cover her covert activities.

I read Soul Breaker back in 2015, and both Shade Chaser & Wraith Hunter in November 2017. As with Clara Coulson’s work under a different nom de plume, I have enjoyed every book that Ms. Coulson has written.

The Erica/Cal intensity I had hoped for at the end of Shade Chaser didn’t materialize in Wraith Hunter. Instead, well, no spoilers… Let’s just say that something happens between Erica and Cal. I’ll also tease that something happens between Erica and Cooper. And of course, between Cal and Cooper. How’s that for a teaser?

I’ve lived in Michigan, and have experienced wintertime at its worst. Coulson does an excellent job recreating the woodsy winter wonderland that is suburban Michigan, and I can easily see Aurora as a stand in for Lansing (I lived in Eaton Rapids, a suburb of Lansing.) I remember spending time in the endless woods behind my grandparent’s farm in Charlotte, Mi. Coulson does an excellent job recreating both the urban sprawl and the rural living in the City of Crows series.

The stakes are getting higher as the repercussions from the events in the previous novels keeps building. It’s like a high-octane race, but each driver forges his or her own path. They crisscross and with plenty of near misses to keep the reader guessing who’ll win, and in some cases, who to cheer for.

I look forward to reading book four, out in less than two weeks. I’m excited to see the results of Erica/Cal/Cooper, and hope that Team Riker finally gets the break they so deserve. All three books are available on Kindle Unlimited, and like books two and one, Wraith Hunter is a solid four stars. This one is the best one yet, and can’t wait to read Doom Sayer when it releases on December 10th.

Cal is back in this latest adventure with him and his co-workers in the DSI unit. I have to say this is fast becoming one of my favorite series. The author’s attention to detail, wonderful writing, great character development, world-building, and action make such great books, I really do have a very hard time putting them down, including this one. I can never wait to see what’s coming next. Cal is really a relatable character, one who makes mistakes and can laugh at himself and others. When something happens, he dusts himself and starts over. I do have a little bit of a complaint: for being a member of the team, he does seem a little less capable than the rest. I know he’s a newbie, but sometimes I wonder why he doesn’t do some training. However, it’s only a small annoyance of mine, something that really doesn’t interfere in my enjoyment of these books. I must also mention a couple of things happen in the book that I was surprised about and can’t wait to see what the future brings (I’m being obscure because I don’t want to spoil anything). If you are fan of this series, you will love this book. If you haven’t read the series, you need to do so as soon as possible; it’s great urban fantasy! Highly recommend! Thanks to the author for the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily. This exact review will be posted on both Amazon and Goodreads.

The adventures of newbie DSI officer, Calvin Kinsey resume in Wraith Hunter.

Only weeks after team Riker fully recovers from a mission that leaves everyone with broken bones and compromised confidence (aka the battle of Primrose Avenue), they are activated to assist disaster recovery efforts after a city landmark explodes, leaving hundreds trapped in the rubble.

Reminiscent of 9-11, it's all hands on deck as fire, police, and DSI led rescue crews try to save as many lives as possible from a structurally unsound scene, while simultaneously trying to figure out what went wrong. Was it a mundane terrorist attack or just a tragic accident?

Of course, Cal and his team uncover evidence that the building was intentionally destroyed by magical means. They also discover that the same magical terrorists are poised to strike again in less than 48 hours unless DSI can take them down.

So much stuff happens in this book. Highly recommend reading in order. Clara Coulson once again crafts an amazing story which deftly blends horror with moments of laugh out loud hilarity. I think my favorite part is when the exhausted Riker team is called back to the disaster site to combat levitating zombies. Where does she come up with this stuff??

Fast Moving Urban Fantasy

As with the previous two instalments of this series, the plot is fantastic in this book. Things move quickly and secrets are revealed all while trying to keep on top the dangers facing the public of Aurora as the Civic Centre is bombed, the first in a series of dangers the DSI face. We also discover more about the vampires that have been previously under-represented in the series. In particular we encounter the vampire that Cal witnessed killing his old police partner in the even that led him to wanting to join the DSI.

One of the things that I like about this series is that it is all about the teamwork that is employed to get stuff done. It’s about how dangers are better overcome when the team stands together, not only with each other, but with other DSI teams and even Aurora PD. Cal is well aware of his tendency towards trying to be a hero. It is one of his driving characteristics, after witnessing his mother die being a hero when he was 8 years old. He wants to live up to her legacy. This book is all about him trying to resist that urge to always want to save the day. It’s all about him trying help his team by recovering from injury rather than going off and getting himself killed when he’s needed.

Ok, now I’m really starting to get angry. I cannot stand how the author starts the action-packed chapters telling you what’s going to happen. Someone gets hurt, a location is blown up, the villain reveals their identity and so on and so on. It’s beyond frustrating!

Also, this one happens to have the worst plot twists I’ve read in the series so far. It’s so anticlimactic for some random character to hop in and explain literally everything. It’s so lame how the toughest most outrageous problems are solved not through ingenuity but ~*mAgIc*~ that’s never explained. It would be one thing if we got to see the characters work things out. But normally, it all happens off scene, through deja vu, or random bursts of insight based off of one word. Like really, make these people work. Oh the most ridiculous and unrealistic part is how these people can get busted up and obliterated but yet are running marathons the next day. Sure spend a paragraph complaining about your wounds, but mysteriously it’s no big deal when you’re tackling a monster and doing jump kicks three minutes later.

Ugh. This series has so much potential but so often I’m just overwhelmed by the idiocy of the execution.

I loved Soul Breaker and Shade Chaser, the first two novels in Clara Coulson’s City of Crows series. No surprise then that I grabbed Wraith Hunter (A City of Crows Novel, Book 3) as soon as I saw it, or that I loved it as well. This book is, quite simply, superb. It’s also really well written and had just what I wanted, including a great plot. I frankly adore Cal Kinsey and was delighted to see him and his team back in action. Yes, they’re desperately trying to restore balance in the supernatural community. Yes, they have to deal with a possible supernatural terrorist attack which caused the local convention center to collapse on folks. Yes, the destruction of Aurora is nigh. La dee dah, this is Kinsey we are taking about. At the end of the day I’d never count them out. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend.

This series is so awesome! I flew through the book in two sittings (would have been one but darn other commitments), and when it was done, I wanted more.

I love how un-alpha Cal is. He's embracing the team baby role, and it suits him. His friendship with Cooper is one of my favourite parts of the book. They are just so adorable together, without any annoying posturing or trying to one-up each other, although they do seem to have an unhealthy who-can-almost-die-more thing happening.

This book contains all the humour and adventure I could want in an urban fantasy story, along with a serious situation and credible-within-the-story-universe threat. Essentially everything I could want, which is why this book (and series so far) is rated so high! I just flat out want more.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

You have to read the previous two books to really understand what is going on in this story. This story ties together some of the elements that have been revealed in the previous books while adding a whole bunch of new twists and problems for Team Riker to deal with. I still love Cal's voice in this story, but I do think some of the plot drags a bit more than in previous books (some of it is just that there is so much that needs to build to reach the eventual conclusions).

I'm really looking forward to seeing where the new twists will take Cal and his team.

By this book, the number of times Cal has had his bone broken is becoming unbelievable. There has been more than 3 times when he is almost going to be killed, when he is saved by others conveniently placed just in time to save him.

The number of time Cooper is shaking in fear is also becoming ridiculous. I wish there was some character growth there. If he is going to be a potential romantic partner in the later books, I want to see some growth. As before other supporting characters are kick-ass and there is non-stop action. Cal's déjà vu does not make as much of an appearance here. The overall mystery continues from he previous books and is engaging.

Cal and Cooper!!! Just a date, but still! Admitting to flirting!!! And the fact that Cooper basically came and insisted Cal take him on a date. Basically this whole book was about Cal and Cooper being adorable for me. Anyways, I did also like how the stuff with Erica was handled with the letter and wiping her memories, even though it was horribly sad, but it was understandable, and hopefully she'll get them back at some point. Anyways, this was fun, and I'm looking forward to more in the series.

This book picked up the emotional intensity for the Crow series. The tragic event that starts the book hits close to home, and gives some insight into what law enforcement and emergency personnel deal with in their line of work.

While Cal is dealing with the results of the tragedy, he is forced to confront a personal trauma from his past which gives the reader some perspective on the strength of his character.

The story was nicely constructed with enough twists to keep the reader engaged and warrant an eventual reread. Yes, it's just that entertaining.

From Magnolia Reviews: Four Petals

I'm really enjoying reading this series and I absolutely recommend this book and the entire series. The characters, the plot, and the world building are all phenomenal. I didn't really like the one sentence explanations at the start of every chapter, but it didn't really hurt my overall enjoyment of the book.

Another fantastic addition to this fun series

It's rather amazing how many times Cal gets injured in this book. And I loved that Cooper is really getting to come into his own in this book.

Once again, the DSI is left to clean up the messes that the supernatural community is too lazy to deal with on their own. But we now have a clear understanding of what has been going on from the beginning.

Wraith Hunter is book 3 in the City of Crows series. It keeps the flow of this story line moving at a great pace with lots of action. It has great writing and fantastic characters. It is a hard book to put down as the author has drawn you into the story and you continue turning pages to find out what happens next. I recommend this book and series. The supernatural folks of Aurora, Michigan appear to be getting bolder and bolder and the ante just keeps rising, along with the death toll. Cal feels desperate to protect his city, and despite being just one man, and his team, he wants to take the world upon his shoulders. So relatably human, and all the issues that brings, Cal has some tough times to survive. Allies and enemies keep cropping up and the mysteries are getting more intense! I loved every second of this book and am onto the next.

Corruption, lies, and spies, it's becoming an everyday thing for Cal and the rest of his colleagues.
I really like the intricacies of this story, the way everything is woven together and the camaraderie of the characters.
It held my attention and there are surprises around every corner.

Leaves more unanswered questions

So the fight goes on, one love lost, one love gained? Cal once again gets battered to an inch of his life when the original foe turns up and saves him. Where will the life of 3rd Class detective Kinsey go next. Just another highly readable diary of the naive hero who brings a smile to your face. Love and sorrow mixed up!

Wraith Hunter can be read as a stand alone however I highly recommend reading in order from Book 1 to get immersed in the full story - it is worth it! Book 3 continues this action packed series that captivates from start to finish with in depth characters and descriptive world building. One of my fave series!

There's some nice character development for Cal as well as for Cooper. The introduction of a couple of interesting new characters and plenty of explosions for any Michael bey fan.
